Murdoch works with Steve Jobs on iPad newspaper

According to reports from the U.S. and the U.K., media mogul Rupert Murdoch is set to launch a daily newspaper specifically for the iPad and similar devices. The publisher has already hired 100 journalists in New York for the project, which he is spearheading with Apple CEO Steve Jobs.

The Guardian wrote in its online edition on Sunday that the product is to be launched at the beginning of next year. The newspaper, entitled "Daily", will cost 99 US cents per week - much less than a printed daily newspaper. This is possible because there are no printing and distribution costs. The display paper is intended to combine the strengths of tabloid and quality newspapers. Leading editors would come from the British tabloid The Sun and the New York Post. Apple technicians are reportedly involved in the development. The content will be played directly on the iPad or comparable devices from other manufacturers - there will be no printed or web edition.
Murdoch is one of the few publishers to consistently focus on paid content on the Internet. The online edition of his British flagship The Times has lost hundreds of thousands of readers since it can only be read for a fee. However, Murdoch's media group News Corporation considers it a success that 100,000 paying readers have remained. The British mass-circulation paper The Sun is now also protected by a paywall. The US paper Wall Street Journal, which also belongs to the Murdoch empire, is pursuing a strategy of partial payment and has two million readers on the Internet.

Mediareports: Market for online media stagnates

The era of market growth for online media in German-speaking markets is coming to an end. According to the study «Online Media 2014» by Mediareports Prognos, the markets for editorially produced online media in Germany, Austria, and Switzerland are currently in a phase of consolidation.

Over the last two years, the ranking of the most popular online media has hardly changed. While in Switzerland the tabloid-oriented online media 20minuten.ch and Blick.ch clearly leave the competition behind, in Germany and Austria the top places are shared by online media from the quality segment.
According to the Prognos media report, the competitors have largely remained the same, but there is still a fierce battle for market share in the online sector. "Quality" is the be-all and end-all, the study found: "Due to the usage behavior of younger target groups in particular, market share can only be gained if operators invest uncompromisingly in quality. Online media that are produced quickly and carelessly fall behind in the rankings."
In all three countries surveyed, new entries into the market for editorially designed online media are also "hardly possible", the institute stated. "The economic barriers to market entry have become high. The economic and advertising crisis of recent years has accelerated market consolidation and consolidated market structures."

Six Epica successes for Switzerland, four of them for Advico Young & Rubicam

The Swiss national advertising team performed very well at the European Championships in Paris, outshining many larger countries. The Epica Awards are presented by the most important trade journals in our industry from Europe, Africa and the Middle East.

The jury met in Paris from Tuesday to Friday. Six Gold Epica Awards shine in Switzerland's medal table. In the Film category, Spillmann Felser Leo Burnett won one of the glass pyramids with its witty SMS dialogs for Sunrise Communication. Jung von Matt/Limmat won a Film Epica with "Animal Farm", the very considerate animals on the sustainably managed Migros farm on Sunday morning. A Swiss film featuring Barack Obama for the Sonntagszeitung newspaper only just missed out on the final. Instead, Advico Young & Rubicam won an award in the Press category with this same babushka idea. AY&R also won three more Epica awards with the posters for Leica "Sharpest Details" and Zurich Zoo "Elephant House" as well as for "Supreme Security" in the "Business to Business Direct" category. Some of these Swiss submissions only narrowly missed out on a Grand Prix Epica. What was ultimately awarded silver and what was awarded bronze can be submitted on Monday when the calculations are officially evaluated at the Epica office.

Guy Morin critical of BaZ turbulence

On Sunday, Basel’s President of the Government, Guy Morin, also commented on the turmoil surrounding the Basler Zeitung (BaZ). There is a fear that «Italian-style conditions are taking hold,» he said in interviews with the Sunday press regarding the protests in the region.

The protests are an expression of the strong identification of the population with the newspaper, explained Morin (Green Party) in an interview in the NZZ am Sonntag, according to SDA. The decisions made by owners Tito Tettamanti and Martin Wagner in recent weeks and months had not helped to strengthen confidence in the journalistic independence of BaZ. "We were told that they wanted to maintain an independent newspaper from Basel," Morin also explained in the Sonntagszeitung. However, the company headquarters were moved to Zug, a consultancy mandate was awarded to a former Federal Councillor and SVP Vice-President, who is highly polarizing in Basel, and his biographer from Zurich was chosen as Editor-in-Chief. He had no objections to the entrepreneurial decision to award a consultancy mandate. However, he understood the many people who wondered whether this was still a Basel newspaper, said Morin. He also understands the reaction of the BaZ editorial team.
In the interviews, Morin also referred to the importance of cross-border commuters and the EU for Basel. Basel and its economy need openness, and it needs a newspaper that represents and promotes this openness, he said in the NZZ am Sonntag. BaZ is also the newspaper for many people as far away as southern Baden and Alsace, he told the Sonntagszeitung. These people were "offended when the BaZ recently took a very critical stance on the EU". There are inquiries from regional authorities on the other side of the border.
As part of its regular talks with companies in the region, the government will also meet with the owners of BaZ. According to Morin, the issues in question will be addressed there.

Last but not least: Snickers' fight against madness

Not everyone knows how to behave as they should in everyday life. Admittedly, this is not always easy. Especially not when you're suffering from hunger.

In the German Bild newspaper, you can regularly read about the insane acts committed by our dear fellow citizens in hours of mental confusion. Burglars have broken into prisons here, a hunter has shot a hunter there, and surgeons have left a glove in a patient's throat. Mars Germany knows the reason for these stupidities: "You're not you when you're hungry," is the message. So we will soon be free of the madmen of this world. Provided they eat a Snickers chocolate bar every now and then, of course.
