Kurt H. Illi died

As his family announced today, Kurt H. Illi died of a heart attack on Monday evening, November 22, 2010, at the age of 75.

After studying economics at the University of Zurich, Kurt H. Illi worked for several years as an advertising and communications consultant. At the age of 43, he was appointed transport director of the city of Lucerne - his dream job. He made up for the mini marketing budget he was given with maximum creativity and total identification with "his Lucerne". Shirts in the colors of the coat of arms, blue with a white collar, were his trademark.
In 1985, Kurt Illi won the sales promotion prize in Switzerland for his efforts in the Japanese market. He became an honorary citizen of the Japanese city of Yokosuka. In 2003, he was awarded the "Five Star Diamond Award" by the "American Academy of Hospitality Sciences" for his above-average marketing activities for the city of lights.
Switzerland's best-known transport director retired at the end of 2000. Until the end of 2006, he was president of the Lucerne City Association and a board member of Basel Tourism. He then led panel discussions, seminars on marketing and communication and workshops on current topics. The folk musician and composer Hans Aregger from Horw wrote the "Kurt H. Illi-Schottisch" in his honor.
The funeral service will be held in Lucerne in the immediate family circle.

St. Gallen public transport: New APG waiting halls

APG, in collaboration with the St. Gallen Public Transportation Authority, has developed a prototype for new bus shelters. This prototype differs from its predecessor primarily in its side canopy.

A further 19 such shelters are to follow in 2011. The bus shelters are operated by
outdoor advertising companies, APG announced in a press release. The company will also provide considerable support for maintenance during the amortization period. This will benefit taxpayers, as the costs will not be passed on to them.
In return, the outdoor advertising company receives the opportunity to place advertising in the light boxes of the modern bus shelters. The income is to be used for amortization, after which APG will share the advertising revenue with the transport company.

Angelink with new website and cross-media tool

The Zurich-based crossover agency Angelink has completely revamped its website and is launching an interactive cross-media planner, initially available only for the B2C sector. Although the website, built with WordPress, has a blog-style design, it does not follow the format of a typical corporate blog.

The focus is on the chronological publication of magazine-like mixed content: News, work samples, but also spontaneous "trains of thought" by agency owner Markus Gabriel. Standing information on static pages is kept to a minimum. Everything is placed in the course of time, writes Angelink. There is no sitemap
The website also offers an interactive media strategy tool to support visitors in their search for the optimal cross-media mix. After activating various setting controls, the tool provides a commented and argued recommendation that can be modified by the user. Even if this tool is suitable for dealing interactively with the topic of cross-media, it by no means replaces human expertise, according to the agency.
The large-scale background images on the new Angelink website show pictures of Zurich's Bellvue taken by photographer Roger Schmidt. The agency plans to invite other photographers to use the Angelink website as a gallery at regular intervals.

The sale of the remaining spaces and local sales will continue to be handled by TPG Publicité. Following the test operation with 100 panels in the first year of the collaboration, the contracting parties intend to conclude a long-term, more comprehensive agreement in the course of summer 2011 based on the experience gained and the results achieved.

Baz editorial team stops "outwardly visible protest"

Resistance within the editorial staff of the Basler Zeitung (BaZ) appears to be subsiding. At Monday’s meeting of the editorial board, it was decided to begin an orderly withdrawal.

The editorial team has so far demanded in vain that the owners terminate Christoph Blocher's consultancy mandate. The Tagesanzeiger reported on Tuesday that the editorial team wanted to uphold the demand, but would cease any outwardly visible protest. This is not least in order to calm the situation, which is becoming increasingly untenable for everyone involved.
According to the Tagesanzeiger, editorial staff are now reporting subscription losses of around 1500 in just over a week. This would correspond to a high six-figure loss. The relationship between the editorial team and editor-in-chief Markus Somm remains tense. After Somm himself explained his position in major editorials, he also banned his editorial team from printing the latest media release in the newspaper.

Baz: Swiss Media Association criticizes "chaos"

The Swiss Media Association is getting involved in the debate about the Basler Zeitung (BaZ): The fact that the disagreement between publishers and newspaper readers leads to discussions and actions is sometimes part of the public sphere. However, the association has no sympathy for the chaos and the prevention of distribution.

The chaos, in which several thousand newspapers were burned to prevent distribution or the distribution organization was prevented from serving subscribers, cannot be accepted, the association said in a communiqué on Tuesday. The discussion about the direction of the BaZ must be held in the newspaper, among other places. If the readers of this newspaper could not follow the opposing points of view because of a few chaotic people, the cause would not be served. In addition, subscribers are entitled to the product and it is unacceptable for someone to prevent distribution at the expense of those entitled to it. The distribution and reading of the BaZ also had nothing to do with the controversy surrounding the individuals. The behavior of the chaotic individuals was much more detrimental to an objective discussion.

German newspaper publisher throws heirs out the door

The board of directors of the Cologne-based newspaper group M. DuMont Schauberg has had enough. After weeks of bickering, it has shown the publishing heir, Konstantin Neven DuMont, the door.

The Board of Directors has decided to dismiss Neven DuMont as publisher of the Kölner Stadt-Anzeiger, Express and Mitteldeutsche Zeitung newspapers, Germany's fourth-largest publishing house announced on Tuesday. The 41-year-old had made "detrimental and business-damaging comments" about his own company in public and even in competing newspapers. The step was therefore necessary to prevent further damage. Previously, Konstantin Neven DuMont had already lost his position as editor of the Frankfurter Rundschau.
Entries in a well-known internet media blog were the newspaper heir's undoing. He is said to have left some crude comments there under different names. The publisher's son denied the suspicion. A short time later, he was relieved of his duties and sent on vacation. Since then, however, Neven DuMont has repeatedly returned with critical interviews about the traditional publishing house. Most recently, he even had a showdown with his father, publishing director Alfred Neven DuMont, and asked him to resign.

Germany: How do the media deal with the threat of terrorism?

How do German media outlets report on the threat of terrorism? Author Marcus Klöckner addresses this question and concludes: «Critical, objective, and independent reporting on terrorism is in short supply.»

In his analysis "Terror and the German media", Klöckner takes a close look at the reporting on the Namibia dummy bomb. He accuses the media of distancing itself from politics, the security authorities and its own reporting: The media had entered into an alliance with politics. As a result, they largely no longer fulfill their core tasks of presenting information according to journalistic principles such as balance and critical distance.
According to Klöckner, even highly professionalized media throw the simplest basic journalistic rules overboard as long as it serves the purpose of reporting as quickly as possible, preferably first. Quality is subordinated to the primacy of speed. The reporting is one-sided, critical voices that question current developments are not heard. "Speculation replaced the hard facts, terror hysteria displaced objectivity." The media had irresponsibly made themselves "accomplices to a policy of terror fear and terror hysteria".
