Press Council: The Editor-in-Chief has the last word

At a daily newspaper, the editor-in-chief has the final say. He determines what is published. The Swiss Press Council has rejected a complaint by the Liechtenstein Democracy Movement against the newspaper Liechtensteiner Vaterland.

The complaint concerns the new publication of the crime novel "The Abduction" by Liechtenstein author Armin Oehri, which made waves in the Principality last summer. The publisher and author accused the Liechtensteiner Vaterland of boycotting the book because it addressed a sensitive topic in Liechtenstein history. The Press Council said on Tuesday that there could be no question of a boycott. It rejected the complaint on the grounds that it is at the sole discretion of an editorial office whether it reviews a book or publishes an interview with the author. In addition, it is standard media practice in hierarchically organized editorial offices for the editor-in-chief to decide what is published.

Günther Fritz, editor-in-chief of the Liechtensteiner Vaterland, had reacted in an editorial to boycott accusations by the rival paper and emphasized that he would not be dictated to publish a book review and/or an interview with the author. In the specific case, according to the Press Council, it has not been proven that the rejection of the book review and interview took place because a dark chapter from Liechtenstein's history should have been concealed out of consideration for a part of the readership. The Liechtensteiner Vaterland had referred to the book in June 2010 and published a detailed report on a public reading by the author in the fall.

Mini pogrom

The book "The Abduction" deals with the so-called "Rotter Affair", a story from the persecution of Jews by the Nazis. On April 5, 1933, Nazis from Germany and Liechtenstein had lured the former theater operators Fritz and Alfred Rotter and his wife Gertrud from their exile in a Liechtenstein hotel in order to abduct them to Germany. During the chase through the mountains, Fritz Rotter was able to escape, while Alfred and Gertrud Rotter fell to their deaths in the rocks below the village of Gaflei in an unexplained manner. In the trial against the four pursuers in June 1933, the court in Vaduz imposed very mild prison sentences. Even this verdict found offense. Over 700 people signed a petition for the early release of the perpetrators.

Made "cloud computing" known for Swisscom IT Services

Swisscom IT Services has commissioned the Zurich-based agencies Notch Interactive and Prime Communications to develop an overall strategy to raise awareness of its «cloud computing» offerings through various channels.

Swisscom IT Services is a full-service IT provider for outsourcing, workplace and SAP services as well as for IT services in the financial industry. Cloud computing allows companies to obtain computing capacity, data storage and software applications dynamically via a network and adapt them to their current needs. Swisscom IT Services operates a server infrastructure required for cloud computing that is located entirely in Switzerland and is therefore subject exclusively to Swiss law.

The communication strategy developed focuses on the five main advantages of the company's cloud computing offering under the headings of "Security, Swissness, Pay-Per-Use, Dynamism and Availability". Based on this, Prime Communications developed five basic messages that were staged on the various channels. Notch Interactive conceived, designed and programmed a microsite with surprising 3D animations (morphing) as well as the online advertising media for the launch of the new cloud services. Prime Communications developed the subjects for the classic campaign.

Press Council: Oltner Tagblatt should not have published SMS anonymously

The Press Council upheld a complaint against the Oltner Tagblatt. In August 2010, the newspaper published two anonymous text messages that insulted the author of a reader comment published the previous day. The author filed a complaint with the Press Council.

Inspired by the complaint, the Oltner Tagblatt decided that feedbacks attacking someone by name must in future be signed with the name. The Press Council has now taken the complaint as an opportunity to review its practice of printing anonymous readers' letters, as new forms of participation for readers have emerged in recent years with the development of the Internet and mobile communication. However, for the assessment of whether readers' comments may be published anonymously, it is irrelevant whether this is done online or in print. In principle, the Press Council is sticking to its previous practice, according to which the anonymous printing of letters is only permitted in justified exceptional cases.

In addition to this principle, however, the principle of proportionality must be applied. According to this principle, an editorial office may publish feedback from the readership without stating the name and location if, after careful examination, it comes to the conclusion that anonymity is not being abused to spread rumors, untruths and hurtful accusations under its guise. Accordingly, the naming of the sender of a letter is also exceptionally dispensable if it neither refers to a person nor could otherwise have a hurtful effect. The new rule for anonymous text messages adopted by the Oltner Tagblatt is a step in the right direction, according to the Press Council. However, in the case of the text messages specifically objected to by the complainant, the requirements for anonymous printing had not been met.

Publishing Network: New trade association for digital media production

The Swiss Prepress Group (PPS) of the Swiss Printing Industry Association (VSD) has launched a new trade association for digital media production under the name «Publishing Network.» It is open to all companies that produce communication materials: printing and media service providers, publishers, design and communications agencies, and corporate publishing service providers.

publishingNetwork_web

Digitization has permanently changed media production, according to a media release on Monday. Publishing continues to develop rapidly and is growing ever more strongly into various upstream service areas. The job description of the publisher is changing just as much as the environment. The traditional concept of an "industry" can therefore hardly be applied to digital media production. Today, media companies, as well as agencies and in-house productions, produce media products for print and digital channels in a wide variety of ways. That is why the association does not define itself by traditional industry boundaries.

The Entrepreneurs' Association is aimed at companies. Apprentices and professionals/students in training also have the option of free individual membership. Publishing Network regularly organizes evening seminars and information events on current technology trends in media production and keeps in touch with members and interested parties via e-mail newsletters, expert blogs and a Xing group. Members of the professional association also benefit from e-learning applications and teaching materials for basic and advanced professional training (polygraphy/media technology).
