SRF plans containers in front of the Bundeshaus

Swiss Radio and Television (SRF) plans to set up a container on the Bundeshausplatz starting with the fall session, with the aim of having politicians meet there for interviews.

The working group was already set up under Armin Walpen, as the newspaper Sonntag writes in its current issue. A motto for the project, in which Roger de Weck and Rudolf Matter have also taken a liking, is said to have already been found: "Every vote counts. The proximity to the DRS-3 fundraising campaign "Jeder Rappen zählt" is no coincidence, writes Sonntag further: "In the container, the editorial offices are to work in the spirit of convergence. The financing, however, is still unclear.

De Weck and Matter irritate internally with their support for this rather shallow project: They set out with the promise to offer less repartee and more relevance on radio and television.

Media Focus: Internet advertising new at site level as of 2011

Starting in 2011, Media Focus will report the "Internet" media group at the site level.

The Internet media group could previously be evaluated as total Internet advertising in Media Focus' advertising print statistics. Due to the great demand for more detailed data on Internet advertising, the "User Commission Online" decided last fall to report Internet advertising at the site level, according to a statement on Friday. Kevin Schnell, marketing manager at Media Focus, is pleased with this development. "Site-level reporting allows Media Focus' clients to more accurately analyze online advertising campaigns. Market developments in the online space can now be analyzed independently of the ever-growing universe," he was quoted as saying in the release.

The following market players provide data in cooperation with Media Focus: AZ Netz, Microsoft Advertising Schweiz, NZZ Netz (NZZ, St. Galler Tagblatt, Luzerner Zeitung), Omnimedia (Scout24, Immoscout24, Jobscout24, Autoscout24, Motoscout24), Ringier (Blick, Cash, Schweizer Illustrierte, SI Style, Bolero, Glückspost), Seven One Media (Pro Sieben, Sat.1, Kabel eins, Myvideo, Wetter.com), Swisscom (Bluewin), Tamedia (20 Minuten, Tagesanzeiger, Newsnetz, Espace Media, Finanz und Wirtschaft, Search, Tilllate, Annabelle, Schweizer Familie) plus various other websites.

Study: Customers get wrapped up in online advertising

Online advertising with banners and pop-ups has a positive and, above all, long-term effect on customers' desire to shop. This is the conclusion of a new media study in which the shopping behavior of more than 1.6 million consumers was analyzed.

According to the press release, the analysis of the data collected by the two Yahoo economists David Reiley and Randall Lewis revealed that consumers who were targeted with advertising spent an average of five percent more money on goods. The two authors made use of a trick in their research. The consumers they analyzed not only had a loyalty card from a particular retailer, but also a Yahoo account. As the two researchers had access to both the loyalty card and the Yahoo account, they were able to send around 80 percent of the test subjects targeted advertisements from the chains to their screens as soon as they visited the Yahoo website. The remaining 20 percent were only used for comparison purposes. Using the customer cards, it was then relatively easy to check who had purchased the advertised products.

Long-lasting effect

Online advertising has now become a billion-dollar business - for good reason. As the two authors of the study show, it played a subordinate role in the experiment whether the users had clicked on the online advertising banner. Around 80 percent of shoppers did not react to the advertisement rather than perceiving it. The effect was long-lasting for many customers. Even four weeks later, shopping behavior remained unchanged.

Download music with slower sales growth

Growth in the market for digital music downloads has slowed considerably worldwide.

It is the first time since 2004 that sales growth has been in single figures, writes the International Federation of the Phonographic Industry (IFPI) in its 2010 annual report, according to SDA. According to the report, sales figures rose by six percent last year, compared to twice as high in 2009. The association estimates the legal download market at around 4.6 billion dollars.

Measured against the total amount of music downloaded, 95 percent of all downloads are illegal, said Frances Moore, head of the association, at a press conference on Thursday.

Google: Larry Page returns to the top of the company

Co-founder Larry Page is returning to the helm of Google. The 37-year-old will succeed Eric Schmidt on April 4.

Daily adult supervision is now no longer necessary, the 55-year-old Schmidt tweeted shortly after Google dropped the bombshell. Schmidt took the helm ten years ago because Google investors demanded a more experienced manager. But now the apprenticeship years are over. Page, who had previously steered the company for three years, is back at the helm. His partner Sergey Brin, meanwhile, is to take care of new products. Page and Brin, former university colleagues, founded Google in 1998.

In 2001, the two handed over the reins of the company to Schmidt, who had previously been head of software provider Novell. Under his leadership, Google has grown from an up-and-coming Internet search company into a broad-based technology group. As Chairman of the Board of Directors, Schmidt will primarily represent the company externally in the future. The roles are now more clearly defined, Schmidt said at a media conference in Mountain View, California, according to SDA. The previous way of making decisions jointly had become too complicated in view of the size of the company.

Annual profit of $8.5 billion

Google continues to earn most of its money from online advertising, especially from the preferential placement of links to advertisers on the hit lists of an Internet search. The company is also well positioned in the mobile Internet business - where Google launched the Android cell phone operating system. In the final quarter, sales rose by 26 percent to 8.4 billion dollars, Google further announced. The company earned 2.5 billion dollars on the bottom line, 29 percent more than in the same period last year. Google thus clearly exceeded analysts' expectations. The annual profit for 2010 reached 8.5 billion dollars.

SMD: Court orders intervention in media database for the first time

For the first time, a court has ordered the SMD media database to label articles that do not reflect the current state of affairs. A high-ranking official had filed a lawsuit alleging invasion of privacy. The ruling is controversial.

The case made a number of headlines in Switzerland: a senior civil servant was "targeted by the judiciary", various media reported in 2008. He was allegedly involved in the manipulation of a video. The problem for the person concerned: Hardly any media reported on the fact that an expert opinion later exonerated him and no criminal proceedings were opened.

He therefore took legal action against the Swiss Media Database (SMD), as the NZZ made public. The SMD manages the archives for Swiss media companies, which now contain around 13 million documents and are used by around 7,000 journalists in their daily work. The plaintiff felt that his personal rights had been violated and argued that his office was so exposed to the media that the reproduction of the current status in the archives was of the utmost importance to him.

The district court of Lucerne-Land ruled in his favor on November 26, 2010. It ordered the SMD to add the following addendum to the articles written by the man "targeted by the judiciary": The man "was exonerated by the expert opinion commissioned by the Schwyz interrogation office. No criminal proceedings were opened against him."

Controversial court decision

This is the first time that SMD - which has been in existence since 1996 - has been forced to take such a measure by a court ruling. This mechanism contradicts the archive system, said SMD Chairman of the Board of Directors André Maerz when asked by the news agency SDA. He considers the situation "bizarre", as the articles were correct at the time of publication. Nor would anyone think of changing reports on sporting events retrospectively because the winner was later convicted of doping. Nevertheless, the SMD swallows the toad and does not take the ruling any further.

However, the Lucerne ruling could have consequences for media companies. The retroactive correction of an article that was correct at the time of publication "overshoots the mark", said Christoph Zimmer, spokesman for the Zurich-based Tamedia Group, to SDA. There is a danger "that such requests will increase". Former Press Council President Peter Studer takes a different view. He considers the ruling of the Lucerne-Land district court to be correct and "very well founded". The Data Protection Act mentions the possibility of a note in data collections - however, there have hardly been any such cases to date.

According to a note at the end of the report, the SDA pursues an offensive practice: as soon as it becomes aware of errors brought to its attention by customers or the public, it corrects the corresponding reports in its service and in its own database.

Euro RSCG Zurich presents restaurant chefs as bad actors

The Mère Catherine restaurant is located in Zurich’s Niederdorf neighborhood and is known for its excellent cuisine. To entice movie lovers from the nearby arthouse cinema straight into the restaurant after the show, the gourmet spot humorously promotes itself in a cinema ad campaign—produced exclusively for arthouse cinemas.

Three 20-second clips show what it looks like when the chefs at Mère Catherine recreate big Hollywood films with a lot of passion but far too little talent. However, the fact that they have a perfect command of preparing French delicacies is dispelled by the cover: "But we can cook," it says, inviting moviegoers to enjoy a discounted à la carte dinner with their cinema ticket.

The campaign was created by the agency Euro RSCG Zurich and was directed by Tobias Nölle. The spots can now be seen in all arthouse cinemas.
