Advertising media research in a new look

Wemf AG für Werbemedienforschung commissioned the Zurich-based Internet and media agency Update with the general overhaul of the six-year-old website, also realized by Update.

During the development of the new Website the main focus was on structuring the constantly growing content for a heterogeneous user group, according to a statement. Whether researcher, publisher, advertiser or advertising customer - every user group should be able to reach the specialist information they are looking for with just a few clicks. To this end, in addition to the usual vertical structuring, a horizontal linking concept was defined, which makes the content accessible from different navigation areas.

Project Responsible: Hans Ott (project management), Benjamin Fritz (design), Markus Koch (programming).

Wikileaks aims to increase pace of disclosure with new media partners

WikiLeaks plans to significantly speed up the release of classified documents once again by partnering with up to 60 additional news outlets.

Julian Assange said on Tuesday that he had already been able to gain around 20 media outlets as new partners in addition to the major international newspapers. This number should triple within the next three months. "We are striving for maximum impact for the material," the Wikileaks founder said in an interview about his future strategies, according to SDA. So far, only 2,658 of the 251,287 documents from American diplomatic circles that Wikileaks claims to possess have been published.

Country-specific forwarding of documents

Assange had recently expressed his disappointment at what he saw as the slow progress of the publications. In the future, Assange therefore plans to disclose documents on a country-specific basis. Cooperations have already been agreed with the Dutch NRC Handelsblad, the Norwegian Aftenposten and Dagens Nyheter in Sweden, among others.

Miss and Mister Switzerland contest: No more TV in the future?

Swiss television is currently considering whether to stop broadcasting the Miss Switzerland and Mister Switzerland contests in future.

This is what Tele and TV-Star write in their latest editions. One reason for this is the ratings, which have fallen by a third in the last five years alone for the Miss Switzerland competition. The last broadcast achieved a market share of 35.4 percent, compared to 48.9 percent in 2005. The figures for the Mister Switzerland competition have also plummeted, reaching 27.7% in 2010. Christoph Gebel, the new head of entertainment, confirmed to TV magazines that there are plans to do so. Broadcasting is secured for 2011, "then we will answer the question of whether yes or no."

Facebook: Companies to be able to use Facebook entries for advertising

Facebook continues to explore the boundaries between privacy and commerce. For the first time, companies will be able to use users' Facebook entries for their advertising - but with restrictions.

The online network introduced its "Sponsored Stories" service on Tuesday, which allows advertisers to highlight users' Facebook entries. Entries such as "Like" or check-in registrations at a branch can then be used as highly visible advertisements in a user's Facebook profile, Facebook explained in a video, according to SDA. The rule is that only the user's Facebook friends see the ad, i.e. those who have received the information anyway. However, such entries are easily lost in the flood of Facebook messages, hence the new offer.

At the beginning of the month, Facebook caused an uproar when the network wanted to make it easier for website operators to access members' addresses and phone numbers. After criticism from users and data protectionists, the U.S. company put the plan on hold for the time being and announced improvements. Critics had feared that careless users might unknowingly agree to their data being passed on.

Last but not least: How the media can be the downfall of statesmen

Two European heads of state are causing a media stir these days—neither of them directly because of their political activities. Berlusconi once again called a TV station and ranted during a live broadcast. Sarkozy surprised everyone on Facebook with his supposed resignation.

Just last November, Berlusconi appeared on a Rai Tre political program to explain his views and - once live on air - to berate the presenter (see video 1). This Monday, the head of government called the private channel La 7, which was reporting critically on his sex affairs. He insulted the presenter as "despicable, vile and disgusting" and described the program as a "disgusting TV brothel" (see video 2). What else can you say? Publicity for the broadcaster.

In addition to his ambitious program for the G20 presidency, Sarkozy also made headlines. For a short time, his Facebook account that he was stepping down as president. Wrong of course, Sarkozy is not the first president to announce his resignation via a social network. He was merely the victim of a hacker attack. Luckily for him, the hacker apparently had a problem with spelling. The message was quickly recognized as a hoax and disappeared again after 15 minutes. Perhaps the attack will at least lead to Sarkozy visiting his account more often in future. A few more messages couldn't hurt. Micheline Calmy-Rey for example, is much more diligent.

Following a keynote speech by Peter Röthlisberger (editor-in-chief of Blick am Abend), Reto Lipp ("Eco", Swiss Television), Karl Lüönd (publicist), Marlies Prinzing (communications researcher) and Sacha Wigdorovits (PR consultant) will join Peter Röthlisberger in a discussion on principles and outrage as a recipe for media success.

Digital expiration date for information on the Internet

Until now, deleting private photos on the internet has been difficult or even impossible. Computer scientists in Saarbrücken have now developed software that allows images to be given an expiry date before they are uploaded.

The software was developed at Saarland University. They were looking for a way to use social networks and still retain control over their personal data, explains Michael Backes, Professor at Saarland University. For young people today, social network profiles are a matter of course. But very few of them realize that embarrassing party photos can still be found years later.

The protection can be applied via an additional program (plug-in) in the Firefox browser. The photos are encrypted when they are uploaded to the Internet and are given an expiry date via a menu. As soon as this date is reached, the security server deletes the key. The uploaded photo can then no longer be viewed on the Internet. The protection has already been tested for social networks such as Facebook, Flickr and Wer-kennt-wen.

The technology is marketed under the name "x-pire!". Anyone who wants to use the software pays around two euros per month. For the time being, the service is only available for photos. In future, however, it should also be possible to use the process for documents, such as PDF files or entire websites.
