Charlemagne Medal goes to Italian publisher

Italian publisher Inge Schönthal-Feltrinelli is receiving this year's Karl Medal for European Media. She was honored for publishing many translations of works from other European countries through her publishing house.

She had thus created "a life's work that brings more diversity to the highly concentrated Italian media landscape", said Frauke Gerlach, Chairwoman of the Board of Trustees of the "Médaille Charlemagne" association, explaining her decision.

Since 2000, the "Médaille Charlemagne pour les Médias Européens" has been awarded to European personalities or institutions who have made a special contribution to the process of European unification and the development of a European identity in the field of media. Previous winners include the director Fatih Akin and the organization Reporters Without Borders.

Last but not least: With wave noise against information overload

Have you ever tried sitting in front of the computer for two minutes and doing absolutely nothing? And by “nothing,” I really mean nothing—no quickly checking your emails, no checking your Facebook status, no browsing news sites for interesting stories, no playing around with the mouse, and no aimlessly hammering away at the keyboard.

Just nothing, except breathing and other vital things, of course. Not so? Then it's time for you to indulge in this experience too. One last click and you're in:

He has been thinking about how we spend every waking minute of the day with access to an unlimited supply of information, website owner Alex Tew - some may be familiar with the "Million Dollar Homepage" he launched - told Tech Crunch. There is also evidence that our brains are being rewired by the internet, "because we get a little dopamine kick every time we check our emails or Faceboo and Twitter statuses". So we all suffer a little from attention deficit disorder, which has a negative impact on our productivity, says Tew. The fact that there is a meaningful background behind this approach, which at first glance seems a little strange, is shown by the fact that site users actually find it extremely difficult to do nothing for the entire two minutes. The average amount of time that users manage to do nothing is just 54 seconds.

Axe leads angels into temptation

Axe presents its new fragrance Axe Excite from January 2011. The product launch will be supported by a campaign on TV, in cinemas, online, out of home, PR and at the POS. The central theme is "fallen angels". The key message: Axe Excite tempts even angels.

Director Rupert Sanders, who has already been awarded a Grand Prix in Cannes, tells the story of angels who - tempted by the new Axe Excite fragrance - fall to earth. They fall to the marketplace of a small town on the Mediterranean. There they set off in search of the source of the fascinating scent: a boy who unsuspectingly becomes the center of attention for the supernatural beings. The film was produced by MJZ, who represent Rupert Sanders and Spike Jonze, among others. The Mill, whose references include the visual effects of Ridley Scott's "Gladiator", visually staged the angels in post-production.

A new remix of the hit "Sexy Boy" by the band Air accompanies the images. The campaign was developed by BBH, London. Dokyo, Hamburg, is responsible for the German adaptation of the campaign.

In Switzerland, the film was released on February 14, 2011 as a 60-second film in cinemas and as a 30-second film on TV.

BBC cuts 650 jobs in foreign program

In response to the British government's extensive cost-cutting plans, the public broadcaster BBC is cutting 650 jobs in its foreign program.

The job cuts over three years would save 46 million pounds (around 69 million Swiss francs), the BBC said according to SDA. With this measure, the BBC is preparing for the loss of funding from the British Foreign Office, said the Director of World News, Peter Horrocks. In future, the program will be financed by the licence fee. This is a painful day for BBC World Service, he explained.

The broadcaster was founded in 1932, costs 272 million pounds a year and reaches 180 million people worldwide via radio, television and the internet. Of the programs in 32 languages, Macedonian, Serbian and Albanian are being discontinued.
