Last but not least: Criminals save the US leaf forest

The decline of newspapers is continuing in the United States. Many newspapers are struggling to survive. Others are banking on crime stories and are having tremendous success with them.

The US magazine Busted, for example, pursues this strategy. It only publishes local mugshots. And this is completely legal. According to the Süddeutsche Zeitung, the publisher obtains the photos from the police, who also display them on their website - including the name, address and alleged offense. For a dollar, the "reader" learns which criminals are running around in the area. They are actually suspects. But since nobody seems to be interested in this, it's just in the small print.

Unfortunately, the Website of this provider is currently being revised. It therefore remains to be seen whether there will be more services online. However, the Google search returns the Busted Magazine website as an alternative. It seems to be about the same. And on Bustedmagazine.com there are exciting links. For example, you can order a complete background check on your neighbor or your daughter's new boyfriend. If the suspect is not photographed in the magazine, at least this offer will get to the bottom of it! Ironically, the magazine also does something for the criminals. There is a link to a guide on the subject "Survival in prison". This can also be downloaded immediately. Just in case...

Newly appointed head of communications leaves DDPS

Colette Adam-Zaugg, the new head of communications in the Defense Department, is leaving the DDPS before the end of her probationary period. The 49-year-old will return to work as a lawyer, as the DDPS announced on Monday.

Explanations for image 1: "Stickers. With the launch of the teaser campaign, we distribute stickers. We place them in bars, clubs and other well-frequented locations. People decide for themselves where they want to put the sticker. It should be visible everywhere. This brings the phrase "This is so 2010" to life. Exactly what we want. Later, stickers can be ordered via Facebook and microsite."

Last but not least: The casting that is not

The new show «Switzerland’s Got Talent» premiered on Saturday. However, it wasn’t the contestants who caused the first media scandal—it was Swiss broadcaster SF itself. Apparently, it wasn’t easy to find good contestants, so the network decided to give things a little nudge.

After the call, it was mainly singing talents who contacted the station. However, this would not have required a new format - a new edition of "Music Star" would have sufficed. So SF asked artists and agencies and begged for applications, as Sonntag has learned. And even worse, they wanted to compensate the contestants and promised them they would not be gloatingly criticized by the jury. A candidate who had already taken part in the RTL show "Das Supertalent" was also requested. The search for candidates was actively extended to as many areas as possible in order to address artists who might not be reached via conventional communication channels, defended Sven Sarbach, head of events at SF. Makes sense. Sarbach also admitted that the jury had received a briefing. Among other things, the jurors were told to treat the participants with respect. This, too, is somehow understandable. After all, SF is not RTL. There is no need for the Dieter-Bohlen effect. But there is something good about it: Under these circumstances, it will probably remain with this one season.

De Weck: Together against foreign competition

In an interview with the NZZ am Sonntag, the new SRG Director General, Roger de Weck, outlined his vision for the SRG. He also called on private media companies to engage in a discussion about the future of Switzerland as a media hub in the context of globalization: Companies should strengthen one another rather than weaken each other.

"SRG journalists should reflect polarization in a factual way, but not contribute to polarization additionally for the sake of spectacle," de Weck said. The task of the Swiss radio and television company SRG, he said, is to reflect political conditions - not to shape them. He also wants to reinforce the tradition of investigative journalism at SRG, despite the cost-cutting mandate, and to delve more into the history of Switzerland: "In times of upheaval, many Swiss people are interested in their roots - in history. Here, too, we can set even stronger accents."

De Weck also wants SRG to distinguish itself more clearly from private providers, "across the board", because otherwise it would lose its legitimacy. This does not mean, however, that it has to do without star presenters. But the main competitors are not in Switzerland; they are the big broadcasters in neighboring countries. And Google TV, Apple TV and Microsoft TV will soon join them. SRG must be the guarantor of an independent Swiss offering in the globalization process - it just has to be left alone.

In an interview with the newspaper, de Weck calls on the private Swiss media houses to debate the future of Switzerland as a media center in globalization. Because Switzerland is a dwarf on a global scale, it is in the interest of all Swiss media houses to strengthen rather than weaken each other. That is why "coopetition," a mixture of cooperation and competition, is needed. "On the one hand, cooperation for mutual benefit, for example in advertising; on the other hand, competition in terms of what's on offer."

Golden parachute for ex-SRG cadre

Former SRG executives who lost their jobs as part of the convergence process are receiving generous severance packages. This is according to an investigation by the newspaper Sonntag.

If continued employment of a management employee was not deemed "opportune, reasonable or possible," there was an immediate release from work with continued payment of salary for six months, Daniel Steiner, media spokesman for SRG's general management, told Sonntag. Those who could show enough years of service were allowed to count on a severance payment amounting to "a maximum of one year's salary." For the former director of Swiss Television, Ueli Haldimann, Sonntag calculates a severance payment of around 330,000 francs. The newspaper could not find out exact figures. One does not comment on individual cases, Steiner said. SRG and the beneficiaries of the social plan have also entered into an obligation of confidentiality regarding the severance modalities. There is no specific budget for severance payments, Steiner added. The SRG spokesman did not want to reveal how many people in total will benefit from the generous severance scheme. He spoke of "individual cases."
