Private "Arena" attracts interest from regional television stations

A few days ago, Switzerland 5 announced the launch of a counter program to Swiss television's "Arena". Other regional television stations are also not averse to the idea, as a survey by the Sonntag newspaper shows.

Norbert Neininger from Schaffhauser Fernsehen, Marc Friedli from Tele M1 and Mario Aldrovandi from TV Ostschweiz answered the question of whether they would participate in a cross-regional private "Arena" in the affirmative. Markus Gilli also considers a participation of Tele Züri "conceivable". This is also "conceivable" for Patrick Teuscher from Tele Bärn. At least a partial participation, says Teuscher, if at least one Bernese participant is involved. For Gilli, however, Tele Basel and Tele 1 (Lucerne) would also have to participate. Marc Friedli takes a similar view: the agglomeration must be served as completely as possible with leading stations, says Friedli. At a minimum, this means Zurich, Mittelland, Bern and Basel. Willy Surbeck from Tele Basel considers the effort involved to be gigantic. He would "rather not participate".

The TV bosses disagree on the ideal time slot. Aldrovandi considers the weekend to be suitable. The same goes for Neininger, who advocates late Sunday evening. Markus Gilli and Patrick Teuscher both name Thursday as the ideal broadcasting day. Friedli does not commit himself to one day of the week, but sees a time slot between 8.15 p.m. and 10 p.m. as ideal. However, competition with the SF "Arena" should be avoided by all means.

Three to five months should be enough

The regional TV bosses agree that a major political talk show could be set up relatively quickly. The interviewees mentioned a time frame of between three and five months. However, the question of financing and the cost key remains open. Another obstacle could be that most regional broadcasters already have their own political talk shows in their program and a private "Arena" would represent a certain amount of competition. Friedli also raises the question of whether a regional broadcaster should have a political talk show with as national a feel as possible in its program or whether it should have an independent show with as much regional relevance as possible.

Norbert Neininger is optimistic and combative: "If the private television channels really join forces, there will be sufficient potential. And since most of them belong to media companies, they could also ensure effective marketing.

Audience Council: Varied, but too long "Swiss Award" Gala

The Audience Council attributes social significance, glitz, and glamour to the «Swiss Award.» It describes various elements of the program as varied and entertaining. Overall, however, the program is considered too long.

With the "Swiss Award" gala, Swiss radio and television SRF succeeded in staging a socially significant award ceremony for outstanding achievements by Swiss personalities, according to the audience council. The gala had glitz and glamour, which was appropriate for the significance of the awards, it said in a statement.

Most of the audience members found the drawing of the million-dollar tickets to be a disturbing foreign body. This dryly staged element was inappropriate and unworthy of a gala. Several council members missed explanations about the nomination and election process as well as the jury and Academy in the broadcast. Such information would have increased the transparency and credibility of the event.

Overall, the Audience Council sees great entertainment potential in "SwissAwards. However, taken as a whole, this did not come to bear enough. At two and a half hours, the show was stretched out too much.

The presenters Sandra Studer and Sven Epiney received much praise. In the eyes of the audience council, Sandra Studer led through the gala in a stylish, competent and likeable manner. She mastered the contemplative as well as the joyful moments in a sovereign and natural way. Sven Epiney pleased the council members with his mischievousness, spontaneity and cordiality. He succeeded well in getting the millionaire candidates, who were unaccustomed to television, to talk.

Local papers: citizen reporters are becoming increasingly popular

Local and regional newspapers are increasingly filling their print and online pages with content from citizen journalists. In Germany, the *Hamburger Abendblatt* launched the project «Mein Quartier – Die Stadtteilreporter» just a few days ago. Now the *Münchner Abendzeitung* is also turning to amateur journalists.

The newspaper draws on the resources of the citizen reporter portal Myheimat.de back. Here, everyone can report on "what is happening on their doorstep".

"We don't see any danger of the newspaper degenerating into a collective blog as a result of content from citizen reporters," says Myheimat Managing Director Martin Huber when asked by Pressetext. "On the contrary, the articles can be a crucial addition to serious journalism in the regional and local area." In the case of sensitive topics with factual relevance, journalistic quality in citizen reporter reports can only be ensured with further verification. In most cases, however, the articles thrive on personal perspectives, subjectivity and the author's direct connection to the topic.

Payment not a priority

The Hamburger Abendblatt has put together its own team of bloggers for more intensive local reporting. However, the reporters are only paid if their articles are published after editorial review. Myheimat does not pay for the articles it publishes. For the authors, monetary motivation is not a priority, says Huber in an interview with Pressetext. Rather, prompt and quick feedback from readers and a high reach are the top priorities.

The Munich Evening Newspaper sees the cooperation with Myheimat and the citizen reporters as "a supplement and a tool for entering into a conversation with readers at eye level". However, the idea of using occasional reporting by amateur authors in a mass medium is not new. The Waldeckische Landeszeitung with the Frankenberger Zeitung, the local papers of the Hannoversche Allgemeine Zeitung and the Neue Presse Hannover, the Oberhessische Presse, the Naumburger Tageblatt, the Peiner Allgemeine Zeitung and the Hannoversche Wochenblatt all make use of the content on Myheimat alone

Data protection officer launches the "Netla - My data belongs to me!" campaign

Children and teenagers should learn to handle their own data responsibly online. Federal Data Protection Commissioner Hanspeter Thür launched a campaign on Friday.

The aim is to sensitize children and young people between the ages of 5 and 14 to the importance of handling personal data carefully. The campaign was initiated by the Council for Privacy Protection, which is made up of people from the worlds of business, science and data protection. According to SDA, its representative Matthias Kummer stated that privacy and data protection are not in vogue. Today, it is trendy to expose oneself.

This is not about demonizing modern technologies or developments. However, with every disclosure of information, a piece of identity and therefore also freedom and independence is given up, and many people are not aware of this.

Data protectionists want to change this with the "Netla - My data belongs to me!" campaign, and they want to start with young children. In their view, this is urgently needed: according to Investigations more toddlers can handle a computer mouse or open a web browser than swim, Kummer pointed out.

No advertising

The campaign is interactive. From next Monday, the website www.netla.ch will feature serialized comics and online games, as well as a picture story for pre-school children. These are designed to encourage children to examine their own behavior on the Internet. Young people can call up tips and deepen their new knowledge with a quiz.

The campaign, which was launched on European Data Protection Day, is set to run for three years and will cost around half a million francs. It is largely financed with funds from the private sector. However, the campaign does not contain any advertising, emphasized Kummer.

City of Zurich: People have their say online

The residents of Zurich are to be given a greater say: This is the goal of two online projects that the city is continuing to pursue. In addition, schoolchildren are helping interested older adults become familiar with cell phones and the Internet.

The city of Zurich has selected three IT and communication projects that it wants to pursue further from an ideas competition and an industry workshop, as announced by the Organization and Information Technology Zurich (OIZ) on Friday, according to SDA. They are called "CompiSternli-Stadt", "Fix my Zürich" and "eParticipation of the population".

To "CompiSternli" Volunteer 10 to 14-year-old schoolchildren are trained. Their job is to teach interested older people how to use cell phones and computers. This involves basic functions such as writing text messages and e-mails, surfing the Internet and the like.

A hole in the road surface? A broken ticket machine at the streetcar stop? A spray-painted underpass? On the online portal "Fix my Zurich" residents can point out damage and defects in the city's infrastructure directly. Suggestions on how something could be improved here or there are also welcome.

The third selected project is called "eParticipation of the population". Zurich residents should continue to be able to contribute ideas to eZürich. However, they should also be able to follow online how the projects are implemented and have the opportunity to express their opinions and participate in decision-making.

Smartphone market: Android soon ahead of iPhone?

Apple's iPhone has won the hearts of early adopters with its design, user interface and many apps. But Google's Android system is currently catching up.

According to estimates by the Internet magazine eMarketer, the rivals will dominate the smartphone market in the USA by the end of 2012 with 31% (Google) and 30% (Apple). eMarketer's chief analyst Noah Elki attributes his forecast to the license-free and easy use of the Android operating system for smartphone manufacturers. At the end of 2010, 24 percent of Americans owned a smartphone. In 2009, the figure was six percent.
