Communicator of the month: Emna Ben Jemaa, university lecturer and journalist

They are well-educated and well-connected. Many of them are students. And they are protesting. In Tunisia, a young generation has, with the help of new communication channels such as Twitter, Facebook, etc., a young generation in Tunisia sparked the «Jasmine Revolution» and brought down the government . And the power of communication and knowledge is now putting other governments in other Arab countries under pressure.

On behalf of these intrepid people in Tunisia, Egypt and other countries, Swiss Advertising SW is therefore naming Emna Ben Jemaa as Communicator of the Month. 33-year-old Ben Jemaa is a lecturer at the private Time University in Tunis, Tunisia, and works as a journalist. In blogs, on Facebook and on Twitter, she and other fellow campaigners have done what has now triggered the beginning of a new chapter in (democratic) history: she has communicated. History is currently being written once again - primarily thanks to modern means of communication and because there are courageous people who obtain information, pass on messages and create knowledge, according to a SW press release. And further: "Without being able to make a political judgment or assessment: It is simply tremendous what is currently happening thanks to modern means of communication, and what we can experience thanks to communication. We are reminded of the invention of the printing press and what it ultimately triggered: enlightenment, reformation, democracy. What would not have been possible back then without books is inconceivable today without the Internet, cell phones, etc. But it takes courageous people like Martin Luther to use the means of communication to break power. Power that can only "work" through censorship. Through censorship of information. Neither the "Inquisition" nor other dictatorships were able to maintain their power in the long term as soon as knowledge and information became freely available."

Switzerland sends Street View to the ski slopes

Switzerland Tourism and Google are bringing Street View to the ski slopes: The Swiss public will vote for the most popular ski resort and decide which slopes the Street View snowmobile should photograph this winter.

Google is adding a snowmobile to its Street View vehicles in Switzerland. Street View will soon also cover Swiss ski resorts. To this end, Switzerland Tourism and Google are calling on the Swiss population to vote for the most popular ski resort in Switzerland. In the "Street View Piste Prize", the Swiss population can choose their favorite ski resort from 30 destinations until 14 February and decide which ski resort will be photographed first by the snowmobile. Switzerland Tourism is giving away 3 overnight stays for two people and a 3-day pass for the prize-winning ski resort.

The fact that Street View also shows remote or special places is an advantage for Switzerland, says Thomas Winkler, member of the Executive Board of Switzerland Tourism: The first time a snowmobile was photographed for the 2010 Winter Olympics and enabled a virtual Olympic slope descent on Google Maps in the Canadian ski resort of Whistler.

Murdoch launches iPad newspaper

Today, Wednesday, media mogul Rupert Murdoch launched his iPad newspaper, *The Daily*. The digital publication is intended to provide news, analysis, and feature stories.

The content is produced specifically for Apple's iPad tablet computer. "New times need new journalism," said the 79-year-old, who forged his media empire as a newspaper publisher. The content for the newspaper, which was specially developed for the iPad, is provided by an editorial team of around 120 people. It breaks with previous conventions in the media industry, if only because iPad manufacturer Apple is heavily involved and wants a share of the cake. In return, the high costs for printing and distribution that arise with a print newspaper are eliminated.

Murdoch is regarded as one of the pioneers of change in the media landscape. He was one of the first to demand money from the online readers of his traditional newspaper titles. News Corp. owns the Wall Street Journal, as well as the Times and Sun in London. Murdoch also controls the film studio 20th Century Fox, the Fox television channels and pay channels such as Sky Deutschland.

Südostschweiz Medien: 25 to 30 million francs for media convergence

Südostschweiz Medien (SOM) is looking for a construction site in Chur to build a media complex. The media group plans to consolidate all of its operations under one roof in Chur and the surrounding area at a cost of 25 to 30 million Swiss francs. The central element will be the so-called newsroom.

It will enable the print media, internet portal, radio and television of SOM to work together, as SOM announced on Wednesday. The media building should be ready for occupation at the end of 2013. The Board of Directors decided to focus the search for a building site on the Rossboden in Chur.

The city of Chur is offering building land there under building rights, which has become available following the partial withdrawal of the army. According to the press release, Südostschweiz Medien expects the city of Chur to take the preservation of around 400 jobs in the Grisons capital into consideration with its contractual conditions. SOM will enter into negotiations with the city of Chur under the leadership of CEO Andrea Masüger. However, other locations outside the city are still being evaluated. Originally, a working group evaluated 27 possible locations in Chur as well as in the Chur and St. Gallen Rhine Valley.

SFLB seals 10,000 apartment doors

To give the Swiss people a firsthand look at what can happen if people are still allowed to keep firearms at home, Spillmann/Felser/Leo Burnett has developed a thought-provoking advertising campaign: 10,000 apartments are turned into crime scenes by sealing them off with adhesive tape that looks like official police tape.

Only on closer inspection does the shocked resident realize that he has been lucky once again and that the seal is not an act of violence, but prevention. "So that your home does not become a crime scene" is written on the light blue adhesive strip. And the solution is included: "Vote YES to protection from gun violence on February 13."

Actor Stefan Gubser personally sealed some of the 10,000 apartments in German- and French-speaking Switzerland as part of this campaign.

Last but not least: Swiss local radio stations resort to self-help in the fee dispute

For the past year, the four industry giants—Universal, Warner, EMI, and Sony—have stopped making their products available to radio stations for free, offering them instead only through a paid download portal. Now, Swiss local radio stations are standing up to the music labels.

The local radio stations are setting up an Internet platform on which musicians, record labels and distributors can upload their music directly. In this way, they want to avoid the high fees charged by the industry giants. These charge fees of around CHF 4,000 per year, which is beyond the budget of non-commercial local radio stations.18 Swiss local radio stations are involved in the platform. The Swiss local radio stations in the Unikom association were no longer supplied by the four major labels after the association refused to use the expensive Music Promotion Network MPN. They received neither music nor information. Interviews with artists from the respective companies were also refused.
However, in order to continue to provide free access to the music - which they are actually promoting - Unikom radios are now expanding the existing, user-generated platform Openbroadcast.ch into an open and neutral hub, as detailed in a press release on Wednesday. Musicians, record labels and distributors can now supply 18 radio stations with their sound online free of charge. The deal is also interesting for them, especially as the major labels charge musicians 100 francs per song for uploading to their own platform MPN, according to Unikom. In addition, the 18 local stations have a combined audience of around half a million listeners.
