Media Focus: Record-breaking start to the 2011 advertising year

With gross advertising spending of more than 309 million francs, January 2011 exceeded the same month of the previous year by over 16 percent (+43.2 million francs). In the past ten years, no January has recorded higher figures than January 2011. This is shown in the Advertising Market Trend Report by Media Focus.

mediafocus1

Compared with the same month last year, the "daily, regular weekly + Sunday press" media group reported an increase of around 25 percent (+20.4 million Swiss francs) in gross advertising impressions. This makes the "daily, weekly + Sunday press" the strongest media group in January 2011, followed by TV and the special-interest press.

With a share of just under 12 percent of the monthly volume, the "Vehicles" sector made a significant contribution to the monthly result. Gross value added amounted to around 36.9 million Swiss francs in January 2011. This represents a year-on-year increase of just under 60 percent or 13.8 million Swiss francs. The most important product group in this sector, "Passenger Cars (New)," increased its advertising print by over 46 percent (+9.8 million Swiss francs). In the month of January 2011, the vehicle industry is represented in the top 10 advertisers (Amag/VW, 8th place) as well as in the top 10 most intensively advertised products.

In relative terms, the "Telecommunications" sector saw the most intensive year-on-year increase in gross advertising. The advertising volume was increased by over 108 percent (+8.8 million Swiss francs) compared with the same month last year. The top 3 products in the sector, "Swisscom Vivo Casa", "Sunrise Free Internet Offer" and "Swisscom TV" accounted for almost 40 percent of the sector total of CHF 16.9 million.

The list of the top 10 advertisers is once again headed by Migros, followed by Coop in second place.

Striking

Gross advertising pressure for "dating services" increased sharply from 2008. From 2008 to 2010, the advertising volume almost tripled to over CHF 9.6 million. This trend appears to be continuing. In January 2011, the "dating services" product group already generated advertising pressure of over 22 percent of the annual total for 2010.

Last but not least: Too much promised

If the snow conditions in February are as dismal as this year, ski resorts don't score points with kilometers of slopes or particularly modern lifts. The top selling point at the moment is the snow. It's obvious that there is some "cheating".

The media report a lack of snow, the winter ski resorts counter: "We still have snow!" Yes, but how much? Since it's all about the details, unconventional methods are sometimes used for measurement. The consumer magazine K-Tipp has discovered the cheat packs (current issue). Thawing weather for weeks, but supposedly no melting snow. That can't be true! The winter ski resorts admit to measuring sometimes in the village, sometimes somewhere else. Not necessarily the natural snow depth either. They make do with artificial snow. (It's best below the snow cannon anyway!) Sometimes it's simply estimated. This explains the consistent snow depths promised on the websites. Caught out! But why attract tourists with lots of snow when it's clear from the first descent at the latest that "snow" means a piste as hard as a rock with a touch of artificial snow on top? Sure, you can ski. And with good edges, it's even fun. So maybe it's better to change your strategy. For example, offer a combined subscription: Day ticket including edge grinding.

To promote the new FCZ Museum, which opens on March 12 at Letzigraben 89, Hesskisssulzersutter is featuring several iconic posters from the city club’s 115-year history.

The legendary grasshopper and Superman, among others, advertise the collection, from which you have a clear view of the Utogrund, the first stadium built by FCZ, where matches were played from 1911 to 1925. In the 1970s, the building at Letzigraben 89 was also home to the so-called "FCZ filling station", where a few centimes of every liter of petrol sold went into the club's coffers...

BSSM: New advertisements for Haecky Drink & Wine

For the second year in a row, the BSSM advertising agency has been creating a monthly ad for Haecky Drink & Wine in NZZ Folio. Each ad tells a story about a product.

Readers learn, for example, how the Coruba rum brand was created on the Antillean island of Jamaica over 120 years ago by the Basel-based traveling salesman Rudolf Waeckerlin. Or how the first barrel of Old Jake Beam was sold in 1795. The series shows how an entertaining, witty advertising campaign can be achieved with a modest budget and in compliance with the advertising guidelines of the Swiss Alcohol Board, comments the agency.

Further competition complaint against Google

Google is facing yet another complaint alleging it holds a dominant position in the online search market. After the European Commission received four complaints from competitors last year, the French company 1plusV has now filed another complaint.

This was announced by the Internet search engine specialist on Tuesday. The EU Commission had already initiated an investigation against Google at the end of November. Europe's competition watchdogs are investigating whether the IT giant has manipulated results in online searches and put competitors at a disadvantage. If the allegations are substantiated, the company could face a heavy fine. There is no deadline for the conclusion of the proceedings.

1plusV develops specialized search engines, including Ejustice.fr (culture) and Eguides.fr (culture). The company accuses Google of blocking the development of such vertical search engines, which focus on specific subject areas. If competitors wanted to use Google's advertising system, they would be forced to use exclusively its software, 1plusV explained.

Ejustice had already complained last year - as a result, Google downgraded links to thousands of websites through Ejustice, according to 1plusV. "For Ejustice.fr, the consequences for access were catastrophic and long-lasting," the company wrote.

EU Commission examines several complaints

The EU Commission has already received a total of four complaints from Google competitors who feel they have been disadvantaged. At the beginning of February, the British price comparison website Foundem, the judicial search engine ejustice.fr and the German consumer portal Ciao, which belongs to Microsoft, made representations.

If the Commission comes to the conclusion that Google is abusing its dominant position in the search engine sector or in online advertising, the Group could face substantial fines. At most, these could amount to several billion dollars. It is still completely unclear when the Commission will make a decision.

Globally, Google is in the lead and has about 85 percent market share in search queries, in Germany and Europe even more than 90 percent. (SDA)

Net Metrix Profiles: Online shopping continues to grow

According to the Net-Metrix-Profile 2010-2 study, online shopping continues to grow. Nearly 60 percent of all Internet users shop online at least occasionally, and one in five already shops online weekly or more often. Nielsen Net-View panel data shows that it’s not just general-merchandise retailers that are in demand when it comes to online shopping.

According to Nielsen Net-View data from December 2010, almost one in two Internet users visited online stores with a wide range of products (mass merchandisers). In addition to the traditionally strong electronics sector, there was also increased demand for fashion products online.

At least one in three visitors to mass merchandisers (e.g. Amazon, Coop, Migros) also visited sites of other sectors during this period. Around 57% of the users of "Multi-Category Home & Fashion" (e.g., Jelmoli, Ackermann) or every second user of "Home & Garden" (e.g., Ikea, Conforama, Micasa), also used offers from the "Apparel & Beauty" sector (e.g., Eboutic.ch, Mariannaud Parfumeries) in December 2010.

The intensity of use also increased. In almost all sectors, the average number of visits per person increased by a double-digit percentage (see chart below). And the market research company also noted growth, in some cases significant, in the average time of use per person. Nielsen expects the trend to continue in 2011. The good comparability and the convenience of ordering from home speak for further increases in e-commerce.

Demographics of users: young, male, educated

The regular online shopper is still more often male, between 30 and 39 years old, and brings with him a high level of school education. Among male Internet users, the proportion of weekly online shoppers is significantly higher (23.2%) than among women (17.2%).

The proportion of regular shoppers is highest among those aged 30 to 39 (26.4%), followed by those aged 20 to 29 (23.4%). At around 14%, this proportion is lowest in the 50+ age group and, conversely, the proportion of users in this group who practically never store online is most pronounced at around 55%. By comparison, this proportion is less than one-third among 30-39 year olds.

Internet users with a high level of school education comprise the highest proportion of online shoppers: almost two-thirds (63.1%) purchase products over the Internet at least occasionally. In the group of Internet users with compulsory schooling, it is not even one in two (44.2%).

"Schnitz & Schwatz" from March on Star TV

Following its debut last fall on regional television, the children’s TV show «Schnitz & Schwatz,» which focuses on nutrition and exercise, is now getting a national platform. Starting March 6, 2011, Star TV will air the second season every Sunday, featuring 20 new episodes.

The 20-minute program aims to sensitize primary school children to a balanced, fun diet and to convey the joy of physical activity without pedagogical finger-pointing, but with fun and adventure. The format is co-financed by Suisse Balance, twelve cantonal health promotion organizations, Bio Suisse and various foundations. Schnitz & Schwatz" is produced by Katakult Fabrik für Projektkultur in Aarau.

In a competition with movement games and quizzes on the topic of nutrition, teams of primary school classes of the same age from different cantons compete against each other to win the day. The participants cook and eat together and make discoveries at an outdoor location - for example on a farm, in a greenhouse, on a chicken farm, in a cheese dairy or sugar factory. In each program, Bernhard Russi also presents exercise tips for the home together with children and an expert from the Institute for Sport and Sport Sciences at the University of Basel. The programs are presented and edited by nutrition educator Lea Guidon. School classes can register on an ongoing basis.

Every 2 weeks on Star TV, every Sunday, 10 to 11 am. Repeats in the interweek.

BaZ editorial office: 8 jobs to be cut

There had already been speculation in the Sunday press about possible job cuts at the Basler Zeitung (BaZ). On Monday, the media company announced that a total of eight editorial positions would be eliminated.

Due to the economic situation, restructuring measures will be introduced at Basler Zeitung Medien (BZM) and eight jobs will be cut in the BaZ editorial department, according to a communiqué on Monday. In order to secure the refinancing of Basler Zeitung Medien and to present a balanced budget to the banks, additional cost savings are unavoidable, it said. A voluntary social plan has been drawn up for the eight people affected. It is to be implemented as quickly as possible. There were no details. "Apart from this communiqué, no further information will be provided!" the statement said. Already in the last months, larger reduction steps were carried out in the printing center, publishing house as well as at Birkhäuser + GBC.

Syndicom demands immediate halt to dismissals

Following the announcement of further job cuts, the Syndicom trade union is calling for an immediate halt to layoffs. In a communiqué, the union also calls again for transparency in the ownership structure. Syndicom had already sent a letter with this request to Moritz Suter on February 10. The editorial team and the public have a right to transparency. If unknown financiers determine the course of a newspaper, the democratic formation of opinion is in danger.

Also, the social plan is the one that was concluded two years ago. The union considers this problematic for two reasons. Conditions have changed dramatically in the past two years, especially in the crisis-ridden journalism labor market. In addition, it is a question of decency to offer the dismissed employees negotiations with the involvement of the unions. Another thorn in Syndicom's side is Moritz Suter's fundraising campaign for the Basel Theater. Last Saturday, Suter announced that millions were being collected so that the theater would not have to cut jobs.
