Erdogan rejects criticism over detention of journalists

Turkish Prime Minister Recep Tayyip Erdogan has rejected allegations that his government is behind the recent wave of arrests of journalists in his country. He said the action taken against those accused is solely a matter for the judiciary.

Erdogan told the parliamentary faction of his ruling AKP party in Ankara on Tuesday that his government would not interfere. In recent days, the Istanbul judiciary had several journalists arrested on suspicion of being involved in coup plans against the Erdogan government. As a politician who had himself served time in prison for publicly reading out a poem, Erdogan said he would defend freedom of expression to the end. He was alluding to a prison sentence he had to serve at the end of the 1990s, when quotes from a poem were interpreted as incitement to hatred.

Accusations that his government wanted to put pressure on the press were an insult, Erdogan said. He spoke of a campaign by the opposition and parts of the media to smear the AKP ahead of the parliamentary elections on June 12. According to Erdogan, 27 journalists are currently in prison in Turkey. However, he emphasized that no one is imprisoned because of their journalistic work. It was a matter of accusations of terrorism, sexual offenses or other crimes.

According to a count by journalists' associations, the number of imprisoned journalists is 67 (sda).

WEmad.org: Facebook reach will double in a year

The presence of Swiss companies, organizations, and public figures on Facebook and Twitter is rapidly gaining public attention. Based on current growth figures, Facebook fan pages will more than double their number of fans by the end of the year, and the number of Twitter followers will increase by 66 percent. These are the results of an initial, preliminary analysis by the WEmad.org initiative, which has now been running for a little over a month and a half.

The initial data analysis was heavily influenced by the ever-growing dataset. Comparisons are therefore only possible using percentage growth figures. These were calculated daily for each social media presence, summarized as a daily average across all sites, which was then aggregated over the observation period and extrapolated to a full year. Sites with fewer than 100 fans or followers were excluded from the analysis.

The goal of WEmad.org is to track the growth of social media in Switzerland in the professional sector. Companies and organizations can register their presence on Facebook and Twitter for free. This creates an industry-wide comparison that allows them, for example, to view their own growth figures in a broader context.
compare. There are already over a hundred listings (registration is free), and WEmad.org is constantly being updated.

China Denies Police Beat Up Reporter

Chinese Foreign Minister Yang Jiechi has defended the tighter controls on foreign journalists in China. He also explicitly denied on Monday that security forces had used force against reporters who had sought to cover protests in Beijing a week ago.

«There has never been a case in which Chinese police officers have beaten foreign journalists,» the foreign minister said at a press conference during the National People’s Congress session in Beijing. Three journalists were injured during the massive police operation just over a week ago on the prominent Wangfujing shopping street. Steve Engle, a reporter for the U.S. news agency Bloomberg, even suffered serious injuries after being repeatedly kicked in the face.

Security forces in uniform and plain clothes were on the scene. In several instances, «small groups of thugs» suddenly appeared, specifically targeting reporters with cameras and pulling them out of sight to take their equipment, as the Foreign Correspondents’ Club of China (FCCC) had reported.

«Politics won't change»

China's foreign minister emphasized that the authorities were following Chinese law in their dealings with foreign reporters. He did not address the recent police-imposed restrictions on the correspondents' freedom of movement.
«Our policy will not change.» Foreign reporters must comply with the regulations.

Last week, the police instructed dozens of journalists to obtain permission from local authorities before reporting on any story in the future. They were threatened with imprisonment and deportation. Under previous regulations, the interviewee’s consent was sufficient.

«A Return to the Past»

The tightened controls were viewed as a «step backward» from the regulations that have been in effect since 2007. The South China Morning Post in the Hong Kong Special Administrative Region wrote: «The beatings and arrests by security forces and the changed rules turn the clock back to the time before the 2008 Olympic Games.»

Above all, it is «about retaining power.» Attacks on journalists and arrests are «not the tactics of a country that is confident of its place in the world.» The newspaper called for foreign and domestic journalists to play a greater role in China.

It is precisely where there is no separation of powers that the media can expose injustices and create the transparency «necessary for good governance and stability.» «All citizens benefit when journalists are free to do their work,» the newspaper emphasized in Hong Kong, where—unlike in the rest of the People’s Republic—there is no censorship.
