Nissan launches online sports channel DEC

Nissan recently launched its new online sports channel, the Distributed Engagement Channel (DEC). This is a broad-based digital marketing initiative designed to showcase and expand Nissan's sports programming.

Via the DEC, the content of the Nissan website can be distributed on YouTube and Facebook and thus reach a significantly larger audience. The background to this campaign is the marketing promotion of the Nissan Freeride World Tour FWT during the 2011 season, according to a Nissan press release. The launch of the DEC will be accompanied by a Europe-wide media campaign that is already drawing consumers' attention to the DEC through more than 30 specifically selected sales channels.

Via the DEC, Nissan can broadcast its program on YouTube, Facebook and its own website and also address viewers via the Google Content Network. The basic idea is not to push advertising messages to consumers, but to be present on the Internet with attractive content when visitors are looking for entertainment and are willing to engage with the content, says Bruno Mattucci, General Manager of Marketing Communications at Nissan Europe. The aim is to bind a large target group to the brand in the long term. The aim is to build a solid community around the brand.

The idea for the DEC came from the company Digitas, which designed the DEC platform and is now also responsible for editing the content. For example, the clips from the TV series "Freeride Spirit" are edited so that they are more suitable for broadcasting on the internet and for adding soundtracks. In addition, Digitas partner Performics is currently working on establishing and promoting the Facebook community "Nissan Sports".

The Nissan media strategy was developed in collaboration with OMD. On the digital media side, an extensive YouTube campaign has been launched, targeting a very specific audience of winter sports enthusiasts as well as a wider audience of sports and car fans through promotional videos, pre-roll commercials and teaser videos, which are displayed based on the selected categories and browsing behavior. The DEC and media campaign will also accompany the other major marketing initiatives Nissan has planned for the mountains this winter, such as "Fresh Tracks". This will offer skiers and snowboarders in four resorts (Avoriaz, Formigal, Livigno and Verbier) the opportunity to ski untouched slopes for up to an hour before they are opened to the general public. Nissan is also sponsoring three participants in this year's FWT - Aurélien Decroz, Xavier de Le Rue and Marja Persson - as well as FWT World Champion Geraldine Fasnacht, who will not be competing herself this year but will be mentoring up-and-coming freeriders during the tour.

OMD Switzerland expands team

Starting in April 2011, OMD will be joined by Karin Altoè as Director of Search at OMD Digital and Michael Sager as Head of Out-of-Home & BTL at OMD OPera.

Karin Altoè has worked as AdWords Vertical Lead at Google in Dublin (Ireland) and San Francisco (USA) since 2008, following her licentiate in economics and positions at Credit Suisse, Visonys Ltd and Spillmann/Felser/Leo Burnett.

Valencia helps Amani raise funds via Facebook

«Amani – Support African Children» is a Bern-based nonprofit organization that promotes the well-being of Maasai children in southern Kenya. Valencia has developed a Facebook app that allows users to raise funds for a school construction project in a fun and engaging way.

The Facebook App is aimed at the German-speaking Facebook community. A school is built online in a playful campaign. Each participant simply clicks on the missing building materials, furniture and school utensils that they would like to donate to the school. Donations can be made for as little as two francs. At the end, each user "buys" the clicked items and materials by credit card or Paypal. The money thus paid in is used 1:1 for the real construction in Loitokitok, which is being driven forward by Amani in the south of Kenya at the same time.

All members of the young association work for the project on a voluntary basis from the very beginning. In this way, the administrative costs in Switzerland can be kept very low. Valencia Kommunikation also works for this project free of charge, as the agency writes in a statement. In addition, the proceeds from the advertising agency's drinks fund also flow into Loitokitok's class fund.

Responsible at Amani: Evelyn Mayer (Co-President and Treasurer of the Association) and Nicole Leibundgut (Co-President). Responsible at Valencia: Michael Gerber (CD), Tommy Schilling (senior art director), Guillermo Garcia (senior copywriter), Nicole Bollinger, Jess Williams (design), Nicole Johnson (consulting), Marc Bissegger, Colibri (app development and programming).

Tamedia honors five journalists with sponsorship award

Since 2008, Tamedia has been awarding an incentive prize for outstanding articles, features, or series published in its media outlets. For 2010, the committee is honoring five journalists from the BZ Berner Zeitung, Das Magazin, and the Tages-Anzeiger for their achievements.

The awards are presented by the committee of the Journalists’ Conference of Editors-in-Chief, chaired by publisher Pietro Supino. Employees or teams who were awarded a recognized media or journalism prize in the past year are automatically considered for selection.

Mathias Ninck: Stories from the Swiss Judicial System

Mathias Ninck, an editor at the magazine, received the Zurich Journalism Award in 2010 for his article on former federal investigating judge Ernst Roduner. According to the jury, in his article Mathias Ninck sheds light on «the Swiss judicial system, which is reluctant to reveal its inner workings» and tells the story of a man who simply refused to conform to «the image of the independent, impartial, and objective judge.» By winning the Zurich Journalism Prize, Mathias Ninck automatically qualified for Tamedia’s Sponsorship Award.

Martin Läubli: Dry Facts and Exciting Stories

Martin Läubli, an editor in the Science section of the *Tages-Anzeiger*, has created a veritable center of expertise at the *Tages-Anzeiger* through his ongoing work on climate and energy issues. He succeeds in weaving hard numbers and dry facts into compelling stories. His articles are characterized by their accessibility and clarity. From the perspective of the Journalism Conference Committee, his thorough research and impartiality make Martin Läubli a credible and competent reporter.

Stefan Hohler: Close to the Action, Yet Maintaining the Necessary Distance

Stefan Hohler, an editor in the Zurich bureau of the *Tages-Anzeiger*, is, in the eyes of the committee, both a reporter and an investigative journalist. He is known for his tenacity, openness, fearlessness, and impartiality. In his coverage of the Munich hooligan trial, he researched tirelessly and skillfully varied his perspectives and stylistic approaches. He has an exemplary ability to shed light on and examine people and their stories. In doing so, Stefan Hohler gets close to the people he reports on while still maintaining the necessary distance.

Stefan von Bergen and Jürg Steiner: Major Essays, Portraits, and Reports

Stefan von Bergen and Jürg Steiner, editors of the “Zeitpunkt” section of the Berner Zeitung, have been providing insightful perspectives for a discerning audience every Saturday for over ten years. At the heart of “Zeitpunkt” are in-depth articles, profiles, and reports on broad contemporary issues and seemingly unimportant side stories. In recent years, they have made an important contribution to the discussion about Bern’s significance in the context of Switzerland as a whole. Von Bergen and Steiner did not approach this discussion with local chauvinism but rather examined Bern’s role with self-criticism. For this achievement and their consistently surprising approaches to major topics, the committee of the Journalism Conference jointly awards them the Tamedia Encouragement Prize.

Tamedia’s grants were awarded for the third time. The support is designed to address the individual needs of the winners and assist them with journalistic projects or a change of perspective. Winners are offered paid time off, financial support for an extensive research project, an exchange with another newsroom in Switzerland or abroad, and the opportunity for professional development.

Last but not least: Everything you've always wanted to know about the Internet

As we all know, the Internet has been ubiquitous for quite some time now. But there was a time when not every child knew what an @ was, and the World Wide Web was one big mystery.

Take 1994, for example. Back then, people at NBC were discussing on live TV exactly what this thing called the Internet was—pure confusion. But the panelists agreed on one thing: “It’s getting bigger and bigger.” The segment was edited out back then—and today, it once again brings home just how rapidly technology has advanced. Oh, kids, how time flies…

RTL Group: Profit tripled

The unexpectedly strong upturn in the Western European television markets gave RTL Group a profit boost in 2010.

Compared to the previous year, profit after minority interests almost tripled to 611 million euros in 2010, Europe's largest television group announced on Thursday, according to SDA. Turnover increased by eight percent to 5.6 billion euros. The upturn in the Western European TV advertising markets was stronger than expected, the media company explained the result. The chain's television channels, including RTL, RTL2, Super RTL, N-tv and Vox, had emerged stronger from the crisis.

The dividend is to be raised to 5 euros per share - in 2009 it was still 3.50 euros. This would mean that more than 700 million euros would flow into the coffers of the main owner Bertelsmann. Bertelsmann holds around 91 percent of RTL Group.
