Audience Council: SRG should become more involved with 3sat

The Viewers' Council considers 3sat to be valuable and sees the joint channel operated by ZDF, ARD, ORF, and SRG as an ideal complement to Swiss Radio and Television. However, it would like to see greater involvement by SRG in the channel and, consequently, a stronger Swiss presence in 3sat's programming.

3sat offers current and in-depth information from culture and science as well as politics in a concentrated form. The audience council particularly likes the theme days, large-scale recordings and live events from the cultural scene. He sees self-produced programs such as "Nano" as a special added value. It is also very valuable that 3sat presents the best contributions from the four parent stations.

However, the Audience Council believes that Switzerland is underrepresented on 3sat. The SRG, which currently participates with a share of around ten percent, would have to get involved to a much greater extent. In addition, the Council would like to see Switzerland aspects addressed more in various contributions and broadcasts. The council also wants to see more aggressive marketing of 3sat in Switzerland.

From a Swiss perspective, the program "Schweizweit" is considered particularly important. It portrays a Switzerland that goes beyond the "depiction of beautiful mountains and landscapes" and also addresses current socio-political issues. It does not cement a clichéd image of Switzerland, but shows a realistic Switzerland in its diversity. However, several council members would like to see more references to the importance of Switzerland's multilingualism and cultural diversity. The audience council was critical of the partly topical, partly time-delayed broadcasting of news programs by the participating broadcasters. The fact that "10vor10" is always broadcast later is not justified.

Only one ad can do that: No karaoke - winning work is not feasible

Licensing fees can be so expensive that they kill a campaign idea. That’s what the winners of «Das kann nu rein Inserat,» Manu Aggeler and Isabelle Meyer, recently discovered. Their project, «Karaoke,» could not be produced due to cost considerations. Nevertheless, they’ll still be traveling to Croatia for the Best Yet competition—along with the runners-up, who will now be able to bring their campaign to life.

The ad provides you with the lyrics: "I did it my way" by Frank Sinatra. You pick up the phone, listen to the melody - and try to sing the words as coherently as possible. This is called "karaoke". Manu Aggeler and Isabelle Meyer (picture teaser) have developed a multimedia campaign from this. To show that an ad can trigger a chain reaction.

The jury was so taken with the idea that they gave their awarded the first prize. For Manu Aggeler and Isabelle Meyer, this meant a victory fee of 10'000 francs in cash. Plus the contract for the realization of their campaign. The ads were to be placed in Swiss newspapers and magazines starting this month. Unfortunately, nothing will come of it now. The reason is the rights to the songs. To be more precise: the music publishers' asking prices, some of which are in the six-figure range - per song.

"A cliffhanger to the Internet" jumps in

These sums far exceed the possibilities of the Swiss Media Association. The "Advertising Campaign" project group therefore has to stop work on the "Karaoke" campaign. At the same time, it commissions Manuel Rohrer and Patrick Ryffel to realize their work "A Cliffhanger into the Internet". The team made it to the jury in December with three campaigns on the shortlist, which together with the winning work included four campaigns.

Manu Aggeler and Isabelle Meyer will receive financial compensation for their efforts so far. As the winning team, they will represent Switzerland at the 2011 Best Yet competition, which will be held in Croatia in mid-May. As the second team, Manuel Rohrer and Patrick Ryffel will travel to the Best Yet.

However, the association does not want to bury the winning project yet: If the idea of "karaoke" should still become something at a later point in time, it has open ears and offers its hand for the continuation of the cooperation, it announced in a communiqué.

Spotlight 2011: International advertising film festival with many social spots

Last week, the 14th edition of the international advertising film festival Spotlight took place in Mannheim. This year, a large number of social spots were submitted, which addressed the current social debate on values and humanity in the format of advertising films.

As always, the Spotlight program took place over two days. The expert jury met on the first day, while the festival opened up to the public on the second day. While the last few festivals were dominated by virals and new advertising formats, experiments and technological gimmicks have now taken a back seat, as the organizers announced on Saturday. There was a conspicuously high number of submissions in the Social Spots category, advertising films for social causes.

In the main competition for professionals and in the student competition, the submitted spots competed against each other in the categories "tv & cinema" and "web & mobile". Awards were presented by a jury of experts. Audience prizes were also awarded.

Last but not least: Apps for wedding freaks

Royal weddings have always been a media spectacle. But these days, anyone wanting to get in the mood for the next big event—the wedding of Prince William and Kate Middleton—no longer has to settle for just gossip magazines and TV shows. The selection of apps is enormous.

For example, there is an app that counts down to the royal wedding. Another offers a live broadcast on the day of the wedding. Another predicts the weather for London's Westminister Abbey, where William and Kate will be married on April 29. An app called "Alarm Royale" allows people to wake up to wedding marches or tunes such as "God save the Queen" and "Rule Britannia". Then there's one where users can write marriage tips and wedding advice to the royal couple in a virtual guest book. It's just a shame that Switzerland no longer has a monarch. That would be great fun - according to 20 Minuten. On the Website you can now vote for who should become "Queen of Switzerland" "so that we can also celebrate a royal wedding in our country". Funnily enough, Paola and Kurt Felix are also included in the selection. Obviously there's been a cock-up!

Mexico: Media join forces against drug cartels

In light of rising violence, more than 50 Mexican media outlets have reached agreements aimed at regulating coverage of drug cartels. The rules are intended to prevent the media from being unwittingly exploited to serve the interests of drug criminals.

The initiative "Acuerdo para la Cobertura Informativa contra la Violencia" (Agreement for Informative Reporting against Violence) was joined by the major television companies and newspapers as well as numerous other institutions such as universities. In the document published in Mexico City on Thursday, the signatories undertake to take a clear stance against violence and to prevent criminals from being stylized as victims or even heroes. In northern Mexico in particular, the media are not only directly threatened by the cartels and subjugated by violence. Often the editorial offices are also infiltrated by criminal organizations. Last year, more than 15,000 people were killed in the Mexican drug war. (SDA)

Imprint: Daniel Suter elected president

At its delegates' meeting on March 25, 2011, the journalists' organization Imprint unanimously elected Daniel Suter from Zurich as its new president. The adaptation of the French-speaking Switzerland press CLA was approved. In a resolution, the delegates also called for the resumption of CLA negotiations in German-speaking Switzerland and Ticino.

The newly elected Impressum president Daniel Suter is a journalist and writer. As president of the staff commission of the Tages-Anzeiger, he has shown great commitment to journalists, especially on the occasion of the mass dismissal in 2010, according to Impressum. The Syndicom union is also pleased with Suter's election. Suter is a dual member of Impressum and Syndicom. His election opens up the opportunity for even better and friendly cooperation between the two journalists' associations, the union writes in a communiqué.

In a resolution, the delegates also call on the publishers in German-speaking Switzerland and Ticino to resume negotiations with Imprint on a press collective agreement.

ZHdK: Design symposium on magazines on the tablet

Last Monday, the Zurich University of the Arts (ZHdK) kicked off its semester-long focus on «The Future of Magazines on the Tablet» with a design symposium. The one-day symposium explored the iPad and similar devices and their relevance to the magazine medium.

The symposium on March 21, 2011 gathered speakers from Great Britain, Spain, Luxembourg, Germany, Austria and Switzerland. There was agreement that only the highest quality in multimedia storytelling will bring the desired success with the reader/user/viewer and that the basic form of tablet usability, the tablet "metaphor," has not yet been found, but that all publishers are still experimenting, summarized the organizers. During the symposium, Gruner & Jahr Publishing Managing Director Axel Wüstmann gave a presentation on the development of Stern magazine's ePaper strategy. These days, the publishing house is also launching a project together with the ZHdK. For four weeks, more than 100 design students, supervised by eight lecturers, will develop ideas and concepts around the media genre "women's magazine" in close dialog with the Hamburg publishing giant.

The presentations of the symposium are online retrievable.

"Filmoffice" aims to strengthen Zurich as a film location

Zurich is set to become a more attractive location for filming and production. The City and Canton of Zurich, Zurich Tourism, and the Zurich for Film Association are therefore jointly launching the «Zurich Filmoffice.» The pilot project, tentatively scheduled to run for two years, will begin on June 1.

The film office will be the first point of contact for national and international film productions, as the project partners announced on Friday. It establishes contacts with the local film industry and authorities, provides information on local conditions and offers logistical support. In addition, the Film Office supports filmmakers with filming permit procedures and promotes Zurich as a production location through international marketing. The aim is to give the local film industry an additional boost. The tasks of the Filmoffice are divided between two people. Almost a third of the Swiss audiovisual industry is based in the canton of Zurich, the press release continues. It employs around 5,200 people and generates a turnover of 1.2 billion Swiss francs. SFLB: New campaign for Bread for All / Fastenopfer

Africa is rich in natural resources, yet its people are starving. The new campaign by Spillmann/Felser/Leo Burnett for Brot für alle / Fastenopfer draws attention to this fact.

Raw materials are extracted by international companies under inhumane working conditions, exported abroad and processed there. The end products also end up in Switzerland. In order to draw attention to the social grievances and generate donations, the creative minds at SFLB have developed posters, advertisements and banners for Bread for All / Fastenopfer. Swiss media: limits to be set for SRG online

Compresso: Axe promotion with angels and augmented reality

Unilever and Compresso launched the new fragrance «Axe excite» with an interactive promotion in front of the Manor store window on Zurich’s Bahnhofstrasse.

The technology used is called Vi3DLive and is a new way of presenting products and games with augmented reality. The combination of camera and large screen shows a live image environment. As soon as the camera recognizes a stored image, a 3D model of it is shown live on the screen.

Axe made use of this technology for a promotion with an interactive experience and carried out a campaign in Zurich city centre on 11 and 12 March. The aim was to take part in an interactive, three-dimensional cloud game in front of the Manor shop window. A team of female angels, who could be recognized from the TV spot knows. There were also 125 prizes to be won.

The doctorate is part of a large-scale TV, cinema, out-of-home and online campaign by Axe, which is currently running in Switzerland. The Zurich agency Compresso developed the idea for this campaign together with Unilever and was responsible for its implementation in the field. The augmented reality technology comes from the Vanija agency in Zurich.
