Joiz new on air - problems with youth protection

The Joiz channel had been on the air for barely an hour when it ran into problems with youth protection regulations. Shortly before 6 p.m. on Tuesday, Joiz aired a clip in which Steven Seagal brutally abuses dozens of people.

This did not please the Child Protection Foundation at all. This clip would have to be labeled by law. Managing Director Kathie Wiederkehr emphasized this to 20 Minuten. In any case, a report of this level of brutality should not be broadcast at this time of day. This example also shows how important it is that the broadcaster takes the protection of minors in the media seriously and that parents are supported as early as possible in their children's media education.

In future, Joiz will have to better monitor what is shown, program director Elif Erisik told 20 Minuten. However, due to technical problems, the broadcaster was unable to monitor everything.

More about Joiz in the current print edition of Werbewoche.

Last but not least: A newspaper is not only good for reading

Reading a newspaper can be quite surprising. After all, anyone who opens a newspaper in Switzerland these days is holding not just something to read, but also a piece of toilet paper.

As soon as the newspaper has been read and folded up, it is given a new purpose during recycling. The creative minds at JWT HF were inspired by this paper cycle. They designed an advertisement for the new Hakle toilet paper, which has been on the market since mid-March. As Hakle Naturals is made from 100 percent recycled paper, the ad very subtly points out that the newsprint in the reader's hands is not only suitable for reading. In this way, many a newspaper reader will have a déja-vu with the reading material in the loo over the next few days. The advertisement will be placed in newspapers and magazines throughout Switzerland.

Update: Cantonalbank.ch general overhaul

For six years, the Swiss cantonal banks’ website remained largely unchanged. Following a complete overhaul by the internet and media agency Update, the portal now features a new design, structure, and technology. The extranet for marketing managers has also been revamped.

After a complete renovation, almost everything is now new. A modern and CD-compliant design should make it easier for visitors to find their way around. By structuring the content into sections for "Private Clients", "Corporate Clients" and "Private Banking", visitors can quickly find the information they are looking for. The "Media Center" now archives all communications from the Association of Swiss Cantonal Banks (ASCB) and network partners dating back to 2004. The ASCB annual reports from recent years are displayed as flip page catalogs, and the latest TV commercials can also be played directly in the browser.

Marketing forum on the extranet

Parallel to the redesign of the public website, the ASCB extranet for cantonal bank employees was also upgraded. The communication platform for increasing the efficiency and cooperation of the 24 cantonal banks was supplemented by a forum for the marketing experts of the ASCB members.

The website redesign and extranet extension were designed and implemented by Update. The Zurich agency has already built the now replaced homepage and has been supporting and advising the ASCB on its Internet activities since 2003.

Responsible at Update: Oliver Arnoczky (project management), Markus Hasler (design), Sam Koch (programming).

Canton of Zurich on Facebook and Twitter

The Canton of Zurich is now on Facebook and Twitter. The goal is to quickly reach a broad audience with information such as press releases and event announcements. The Cantonal Government has tasked the Communications Department with a one-year pilot project to this end.

The canton wants to take advantage of the opportunities offered by social media, writes the State Chancellery in a press release. The public should be able to contact the administration easily and directly and submit inquiries or suggestions. Especially for tasks with participatory elements such as consultations, a social media offering can support the goals of e-government. The government council also wants to use the social media platforms to better reach the people of Zurich and draw additional attention to specific services such as voting documents. In crisis situations or emergencies, social media can also help to inform the population quickly, it continues. After the pilot phase, a review will be carried out to determine whether the new service is being used and whether it should be introduced permanently.

Schaffhausen News: Good experience with payment platform

Earlier this year, the Schaffhauser Nachrichten became the first media company in Switzerland to take the plunge and introduce a paywall for its website. According to the company, the experience over the first three months has been positive.

Three months after the launch, 20 people have signed up for an online subscription to the Schaffhausen News (SN) decided to do so. This gives these subscribers access to all SN articles and the latest daily agency news for the price of CHF 299 per year. All others who visit the SN website without an online subscription are referred to the subscription service with every click.

Publisher Norbert Neininger told the news agency SDA on Tuesday that he was satisfied with the number of 20 subscribers. The goal of the changeover was not to find as many new online subscribers as possible, he said. "We just wanted to prevent our articles from being read for free."

Disadvantaged because of free online readers

He now often receives feedback from subscribers who appreciate that they are no longer disadvantaged compared to free online readers. Many, he says, did not appreciate the fact that they had paid 354 francs for a print subscription and that the articles were posted on the Internet for free on the same day.

Whether this model will prove itself in the long term remains to be seen, Neininger added. One negative side effect is that the number of hits on the website has dropped by 30 percent. This also applies to the online presence of Radio Munot, which also belongs to the media company Meier + Cie.

iPhone application and digital Sunday edition

The small publisher from northern Switzerland is breaking new ground in electronic media with other projects as well: In the coming weeks, SN will launch a paid iPhone application. Like the online presence, this app will be free for subscribers and "rather expensive" for everyone else.

According to Neininger, the exact price has not yet been determined. In July of this year, the people of Schaffhausen will venture into the next project: SN will launch a digital Sunday edition exclusively for iPad and iPhone.

Tamedia: Paid iPad application before the end of the year

The Tamedia media group is also thinking about which content should be free in the future and which should cost something. As a spokesperson explained, Tamedia will not make a black-and-white decision on this issue. It is clear that tagesanzeiger.ch/newsnetz will remain free of charge because it is successful.

The situation is different for iPad applications which are to be launched on the market before the end of 2011: Tamedia plans to charge for certain offerings - especially those that are closer to the printed newspaper in terms of content. To ensure that traditional Tages-Anzeiger subscribers do not feel left out, Tamedia also wants to reduce the number of print stories that are posted free of charge on tagesanzeiger.ch/newsnetz on the same day.

NZZ: Buy individual articles

The Neue Zürcher Zeitung also believes in paid content. "I assume that we will introduce this," Editor-in-Chief Markus Spillmann told the Austrian newspaper Der Standard last week. Daily news, such as from agencies, will remain free in the future, said Peter Hogenkamp, head of digital media, in response to an inquiry from SDA. It is currently being clarified whether and how further content will be offered for a fee.

Like Tamedia, the NZZ is not backing a so-called paywall, i.e. a wall to paid offers. It is currently examining a model in which readers could buy individual texts depending on their interests. (SDA)

Bertelsmann: profits soar

Bertelsmann, Europe's largest media conglomerate, has finally put the advertising crisis behind it. The company posted one of the best results in its history.
