VBZ poster by Ruf Lanz wins the Swiss Poster Award

Zurich Public Transportation (VBZ) won the 2010 Swiss Poster Award for its «Mörgeli/Jositsch» poster. The VBZ’s image campaign promotes the high density of stops in Zurich’s transit network and was conceived by the Zurich-based advertising agency Ruf Lanz.

The jury presented a total of 14 Poster Awards at the Poster Night on March 24, 2011. On the best poster of 2010, the two National Councillors Christoph Mörgeli (SVP) and Daniel Jositsch (SP) sit next to each other on the streetcar with sour expressions, eagerly waiting for the next stop. The tactic of relying on an "unholy alliance" between two political opponents has paid off for the Ruf Lanz agency from Zurich. The jury assesses the Winning subject with political intimate enemies as "entertaining" and the campaign as "all-round successful".

Swiss Poster Award 2010: The shortlist

ISA: Two sponsoring projects from Switzerland receive awards

The Faspo Sponsoring Association presented the International Sponsoring Awards (ISA) in Hamburg on Thursday. IMG (Switzerland) was also honored for its "Charles Vögele Fashion Days Zurich 2010" project and the Würth Group for its sponsorship commitment to the Tour de Suisse.

The IMG agency received the award in the "Media" category. The fusion of a fashion event with a TV casting show in the run-up to the event on the one hand, and media partnerships with various publishing houses on the other, persuaded the jury to award the sponsorship concept. "Charles Vögele Fashion Days covers all important channels cross-medially and creates a highly professional link between an event and a TV format," the jury stated in the official press release. Charles Vögele Fashion Days Zurich is a four-day fashion event that was held for the first time in Zurich from November 3 to 6, 2010. Swiss fashion chain Charles Vögele was won as the title sponsor.

The Würth Group, which was the main sponsor of the Tour de Suisse, also received an award in the "Sports Sponsorship" category. According to the jury, the company succeeded in deepening customer relationships and charging them with emotion. The overall concept was designed very professionally and accompanied by extensive performance and impact monitoring.

SLK: London company to stop fax advertising

Altanus Private Media Services Ltd. is engaging in unfair advertising practices with "Swiss Money Report." Although the London-based company has been ordered to stop its fax advertising, it has not ceased sending mailings to Swiss households that have opted out of receiving advertising. The Swiss Fair Trading Commission (SLK) is once again calling on the company to stop the advertising.

In a mass fax mailing, the name "Swiss Money Report" from London is used to advertise questionable stock-buying tips to Swiss recipients. And this crisscrosses the entire population. Already last summer, various consumers, including a woman from the French-speaking part of Switzerland, complained to SLK about the unwanted faxes that reach and disturb them during the night. And this despite the fact that her telephone number has a star entry.

The Third Chamber of the SLK condemned the activity of the consignor as an "aggressive sales method in distance selling" according to the principle article 4.4 2. However, this does not seem to bother the London-based company, because the same complainant received the Swiss Money Report again in October, notwithstanding the verdict. Since she does not understand the German texts and is not interested in stock tips, the complainant from the French-speaking part of Switzerland turned to the SLK with a request for sanctions. The Third Chamber of the SLK has granted the request and is once again asking the mail-order company in London to refrain from faxing advertising to the applicant.

Cosmic: Fighting the noise with earplugs

Ohropax, distributed throughout Switzerland by the Geneva-based company F. Uhlmann-Eyraud, manufactures a wide variety of earplugs. A new campaign by Cosmic now features the earplugs as oversized noise-canceling devices.

The focus of the visuals is the humorous dramatization of noise reduction around the product. The Ohropax itself becomes the hero of the campaign and, as an oversized earplug, makes all sources of noise seem very small in the visuals. The new implementations can be seen immediately on various communication measures; on posters, advertisements, banners, brochures and POS displays.

Election campaign at SBB stations

In this election year, SBB is allowing campaign events at smaller train stations on a trial basis. The four major parties—FDP, SVP, SP, and CVP—had requested this from SBB. So far, a total of ten events have been held in the cantons of Zurich and Lucerne.

Being right in the middle of the action when thousands of passengers stream through Swiss railroad stations - this is what the major parties wanted from SBB. A few weeks ago, the railroad agreed, but only on a trial basis for the cantonal elections in Zurich and Lucerne and only in smaller stations. In these two cantons, where cantonal council and cantonal government elections are due on April 3 and 10 respectively, the first campaigns have now been carried out at train stations. In the canton of Lucerne, there have been eight so far at Sursee, Hochdorf, Emmenbrücke and Nebikon stations.

There were two flyer and Schöggelia campaigns in the canton of Zurich, specifically in the train stations of Dietlikon and Thalwil, as an SBB spokesperson explained when asked by the SDA news agency. It is not yet possible to say whether these ten campaigns were successful. As FDP General Secretary Stefan Brupbacher explained on request, the advertising at railroad stations will only be analyzed once the elections in Lucerne and Zurich are over. A decision will then be made together with SBB as to whether the parties should also be allowed to advertise in train stations for the national elections in the fall. The main point of discussion is likely to be the fees that SBB charges for the use of stations.

290 francs for the Thalwil ZH station

For a station such as Thalwil, which is close to Zurich and is also a busy transfer station, the daily charge is CHF 280. For other, smaller stations such as Nebikon, it is CHF 190. Far too much, as the parties argued at the start of the trial. Political parties only have limited budgets. In addition, such fees would contradict the Swiss system because the public is dependent on political information.

Passengers have not yet been asked whether they appreciate having flyers pressed into their hands or being involved in conversations while waiting. All that is known is that there have not yet been masses of complaints, said the SBB spokesperson. (SDA)

NZZ hands over Scheidegger photo archive to foundation

The NZZ transfers the archive of long-time Neue Zürcher Zeitung photographer Ernst Scheidegger by selling it to the Ernst Scheidegger Archive Foundation.

The work of the photographer and former picture editor has been comprehensively catalogued by the NZZ in recent years, according to a press release issued on Thursday. It is now complying with Ernst Scheidegger's wish to sell the corpus of the foundation he established in order to ensure the long-term care and management of his extensive oeuvre.

As a photographer, publisher and art mediator, Ernst Scheidegger shaped the NZZ supplement Wochenende for decades. As a photojournalist, he traveled the Arab world, India and the Far East for the Magnum photo agency. However, it was his portraits of artists that made him famous. As early as 1943, he took photographs of Alberto Giacometti's studios in Maloja, Stampa and Paris, and published these pictures in 1958 as a book together with his autobiographical and poetic texts. He captured Max Bill, Marc Chagall and Oscar Kokoschka in pictures, as well as Man Ray, Joan Miró and other contemporary artists.

The Neue Zürcher Zeitung pays tribute to Ernst Scheidegger and his work in a special supplement in its March 25 issue.

Reputation study: Swatch Group reclaims first place

Every year, GFK Switzerland conducts the representative «GFK Business Reflector» study to assess the reputation and standing of Switzerland’s top companies. In 2011, the Swatch Group regained the top spot after a one-year hiatus.

After 2009, the Swatch Group once again enjoys the best reputation among the Swiss population of the 50 companies surveyed, GFK Switzerland writes in a statement. The approximately 3'500 respondents attest the Swatch Group above all a high economic performance compared to the second-placed Migros-Genossenschafts-Bund. In addition, the Swatch Group also receives the highest sympathy scores. Close behind is Migros, which also improved slightly and received the best ratings, especially in terms of sustainability. New in the reputation top ten are Hilti and Emmi.

Big banks continue to catch up

Raiffeisen, the cantonal banks and Post Finance continue to benefit from the effects of the financial crisis and are well ahead of the two big banks, which are ranked in the bottom 10. However, Credit Suisse is now approaching the reputation level of 2007 again, while UBS is the winner of this year's ranking with a jump in reputation of almost 8 points.

The results of the representative study "GFK Business Reflector" are based on over 3'500 surveys in Switzerland. According to the company, the aim of the study is to provide objective and precise reputation monitoring for commercial companies. Aspects such as image, awareness, quality, innovation, emotional components and sustainability are examined. Swiss companies can work specifically on their reputation and position themselves consciously.

SF broadcasts BAG spots only late in the evening

«If it itches or burns, please see a doctor!» This message, illustrated with people scratching themselves, is considered too sensitive for prime-time Swiss television. As a result, Swiss television will not air three of the four new FOPH public service announcements until late in the evening.

Yoga students and biology teachers scratching themselves between their legs are too sensitive for Swiss television: Immediately before and after the "Tagesschau" three of four BAG spots are therefore not broadcast. An SRF spokeswoman confirmed to the news agency SDA a corresponding article from 20Minuten on Thursday, according to which the spots are only broadcast from 10 p.m. and in one case even from 11 p.m. - although the FOPH actually wanted to book prime time.

> About the BAG campaign

The commercials had been visioned by those responsible for the program. They came to the conclusion that the spots could be considered tasteless by part of the audience, they said in response to an inquiry from SDA. The spots have been broadcast since Wednesday. There have been no complaints from disgusted viewers so far. The FOPH wants to use the spots to draw attention to the increasing spread of STIs such as syphilis and chlamydia.
