New owner for Myspace: Specific Media

Rupert Murdoch's News Corp is parting company with what was once the world's largest online network Myspace after sustained losses. The new owner is the online advertising company Specific Media from California.

The company announced the purchase on Wednesday. However, no price was given. According to reports in the US media, News Corp will receive just 35 million dollars. Part of this will not even be paid in cash, but in Specific Media shares, according to SDA. According to media reports, US pop star and actor Justin Timberlake is also on board as an investor. He has joined My Space as a minority shareholder, as Tim Vanderhook, CEO of Specific Media, reported in an interview with Adage according to Horizont.net.

The media mogul Murdoch paid a whopping 580 million dollars for Myspace in 2005. But that was not all, he also invested heavily in the further development of the website. Nevertheless, the network accumulated ever greater debts since it came under the management of Murdoch's News Corp. And with the rise of Facebook, Myspace's user numbers stagnated. Its younger rival Facebook overtook it and now has around 600 million members. In contrast to Myspace, the social media platform is valued at between 50 billion and 100 billion dollars. The large number of users makes the network interesting for advertising partners.

Swiss media: "Media budget" study published

The media market grew in 2010: Revenue from user and advertising markets totaled 13.3 billion francs, up 2.1 percent from 2009. Private individuals invested 10 billion francs. Revenue from the advertising market rose by 7.3 percent to 3 billion Swiss francs.

The Swiss Media Association presented its Media Budget study for the seventh time. On the one hand, it surveys users' expenditure on content, access and hardware for media consumption and, on the other, adds up the results of the Swiss advertising statistics. The study thus presents the total income of the Swiss media industry in all its forms.

The results at a glance:

A private household spent an average of CHF 2,920 on media consumption in 2010. Compared to previous years, the level was maintained. The Swiss population spent practically the same amount on the printed press as last year: CHF 1.7 billion. Revenues from press subscriptions rose by 1.3% to CHF 1.2 billion, while individual sales fell by 3.8% to CHF 573 million.

Expenditure on media-related internet downloads rose by 2.7% to CHF 375 million. The Swiss spent a total of CHF 5.3 billion on editorial content in 2010. We can conclude from this: The Swiss remain loyal to their print brands, even in the digital media world. Newspapers reach 5.5 million people with one issue, magazines 5.4 million. This also applies to young people: Over three quarters of all 14 to 24-year-olds read the daily press.

The media managers who took part in a survey conducted by the Swiss Press Association on media trends are regaining their footing after two years of crisis. Cost pressure has accelerated reorganization and repositioning.

The new business areas in digital media are being developed in a targeted and prudent manner. At the same time, there is a great awareness that revenue from traditional media brands will continue to be important in the near future. Journalistic content should continue to cost something in the user market. Media managers are focusing on the development of new technologies. The competitive pressure in the digital media world is challenging traditional media companies: Investments are being made in journalistic expertise and quality.

Last but not least: With love against arrogance

Wikipedia on a "love trip": The platform has introduced a new feature called Wikilove, which is designed to promote positive communication among contributors.

With the "Love" button, users can express their appreciation for contributions and their authors - and send virtual gifts in the form of kittens, beer or other small tokens of appreciation. The aim is to encourage more people to write and expand articles, according to the Wikimedia blog. Internal studies have shown that the arrogance of other Wikipedia authors is one of the main reasons why many new authors throw in the towel or become less active.

Promoting more praise and recognition instead of arrogance and humiliation - a nice idea, dear Wikipedia team. But does it have to be love that is passed back and forth between the authors? Well, as we all know, the "Like" button is already occupied, so it makes sense to reach for the next highest emotion, love.

Although only users in English-language Wikipedia will be able to see the love feature for the time being, it is surely only a matter of time before the love wave reaches German-speaking countries. And then people in this country will be able to love for all they're worth.

Google launches new social network

On Tuesday, Google launched its new service, Google+, to rival market leader Facebook. However, the network is still in a testing phase and, for now, can only be used by invitation.

At the heart of Google+, which is more a collection of tools for interaction than a single website, are so-called "circles" in which users can sort their online friends. All they have to do is drag and drop their friends into one or more circles. Google sees this as the major advantage of its offering: Google+ users can use this method to determine exactly which information is accessible to which user. With competitor Facebook, it is much more complicated to make status messages or photos invisible to individual online friends such as distant acquaintances or superiors.

Observer launches "whistleblower" platform

The Swiss online magazine *Beobachter* is launching its own WikiLeaks-style platform. Whistleblowers can use it to report misconduct anonymously. The web agency Snowflake Productions is set to guarantee security and discretion.

On the new Platform is intended to support people who want to report and publicize abuses such as tax evasion and corruption, writes the Observer in a statement on Wednesday. These so-called "whistleblowers" are important for society because errors and grievances can only be identified and remedied with their help.

The Observer advises whistleblowers not to submit reports to the platform out of revenge against companies or the state. The primary motivation should be the public interest or the well-being of the state, entire organizations and companies. To this end, it is important to first clarify the motivation for the report. It is also important to consider the private consequences of such a report for the whistleblower and their family. The reporting of serious wrongdoing or corruption can bring with it great burdens that are difficult to assess at first.

Anyone who wants to report grievances anonymously must take care from the outset not to leave any traces, the observer continues. For this, an online platform with a view to maximum security and discretion is essential. The Swiss Internet agency Snowflake Productions ensures the secrecy of anonymous data on the Wikileaks platform with state-of-the-art online systems. The hosting of the servers is also specially designed to keep data secret.

But data security is only one side of the coin. On the other side are the whistleblowers themselves. It is primarily those who betray themselves through their own actions who are exposed. To prevent this, the Observer offers numerous tips and advice.

PR Suisse: President Regula Ruetz confirmed at AGM

Around 60 members attended the second General Assembly of PR Suisse on June 27. President Regula Ruetz was able to win Roger de Weck as a guest speaker.

The General Assembly approved all of the proposals put forward by the Board of Directors, as detailed in a press release on Wednesday. Regula Ruetz was elected as President for a further year. Markus Berger, Director of the SPRI, was also unanimously re-elected to the Board of Directors. In addition, Gianni Moresi from the STRP was elected as an honorary member and Bernhard Müller, honorary councillor and BPRG member, was elected as the second auditor alongside Pascale Lehman (ZPRG).

In his presentation, Roger De Weck provided an insight into the strategies of the Swiss fee-based media. Today, SRG still functions strongly via the established national language TV and radio channels as the "main gateway" for consumers. However, more and more audiences are streaming through the "side gate" of the web. While the channels distinguish themselves through programs and content, what counts on the web is the attractiveness of the overall portal - and the interplay of content, usability, exchange and networking. De Weck wants to open and maintain the main and side gates for SRG - but with a clear focus on independent and high-quality content.
