Syndicom demands "No reduction in night surcharges in newspaper printing plants".

A delegation of about 60 night shift workers from the printing industry and the media and communications union Syndicom presented Viscom, the graphic arts industry association, with a resolution on Thursday calling for «No cuts to night shift premiums at newspaper printing plants.».

Shift work, and in particular regular night work, not only puts a strain on the health of those affected, but also severely restricts participation in social life, Syndicom wrote in a communiqué on Thursday. The CLA for the graphic arts industry guarantees employees in newspaper printing plants until the end of 2011 - in addition to the legally guaranteed time supplement of 10 percent - a supplement of 90 percent in cash for every hour of night work. The abolition of the guarantee for the 90 percent supplement and the forthcoming negotiations for a new CLA for the graphic arts industry next year have prompted Syndicom to collect signatures in newspaper printing plants in recent weeks and launch a campaign to defend this supplement for night work. By signing the petition "We work at night so that employers can sleep well!", 660 people affected by night work clearly expressed that the current supplements for their work at non-standard hours must not be touched.

"Syndicom draws the attention of newspaper printing companies to the fact that they are hardly competing with foreign printers," the communiqué continues. Syndicom is therefore demanding that the Viscom employers' association and its member companies continue to pay the night surcharge of 90 percent for employees in newspaper printing plants in 2012 and in the future.

Kulturpool unites seven cultural magazines on one website

There’s a new offering in the Swiss advertising and classifieds market: The seven cultural magazines—041, Berner Kulturagenda, Juli, Kolt, Kul, Programm Zeitung, and Saiten—can now be found on a newly launched website.

With a total circulation of 209,143 copies and a readership of over 260,000 people, Kulturpool is aimed, among others, at cultural providers that organize events of supra-regional importance - museums, exhibitions, festivals, concerts or theater performances. The pool also offers significant advantages for nationally active companies that want to be present with their products in a cultural environment in the regions of Aargau, Basel, Bern, Central and Eastern Switzerland, Olten and the Principality of Liechtenstein, the press release continues: advertising only needs to be booked once and appears simultaneously in all seven cultural publications in print and online. This not only offers efficiency gains, but is also financially rewarded with a pool discount of 10 percent.

041 (Lucerne), Berner Kulturagenda, Juli (Aargau), Kolt (Olten), Kul (Liechtenstein), Programm Zeitung (Basel) and Saiten (St. Gallen) are the most important cultural magazines with the most comprehensive event agendas in their respective regions, according to the press release.

Ruf Lanz: Launch campaign created for Tageswoche

The first printed edition of Tageswoche appears on October 28. The Ruf Lanz agency realized the launch campaign.

The campaign deliberately focuses on outdoor advertising in the Basel area, Ruf Lanz writes in a statement. The type posters are designed in the CI of the Tageswoche and are intended to do justice to the various facets of the newspaper. On posters in pedestrian zones, strikingly small type demonstrates what the Tageswoche journalists do: Get up close and take a good look. Posters next to each other show how people like to forward interesting Tageswoche articles to their friends. And in several places, the medium poster itself is used to demonstrate how thoroughly Tageswoche does its research. Even in advertising.

In addition, there are numerous posters in streetcars and buses with subscription cards.

VResponsible for the Tageswoche: Tobias Faust (Managing Director), Urs Buess (Co-Editorial Director), Remo Leupin (Co-Editorial Director). Responsible at Ruf Lanz: Markus Ruf, Danielle Lanz (CD), Maren Beck, Andreas Hornung, Markus Ruf (text), Marcel Schläfle (AD), Florian Fleischmann (graphics), Heike Rindfleisch (consulting).

The daily week is launched

It publishes daily online and, starting this Friday, will be published weekly as a print newspaper: *Die Tageswoche* from Basel. The first issue is 64 pages long and has an initial print run of over 100,000 copies.

Tageswoche reports daily online on what is happening in the greater Basel area and what is of national and international importance. And it is published every Friday as a printed newspaper with background and analysis. The newspaper project has met with lively interest - also internationally - and has been launched with a great deal of goodwill from the population, according to a press release. More than 5,000 subscriptions had already been taken out before the launch.

The weekly newspaper is published in a format that is new for Switzerland (half Rhine, 26×36 cm). The first issue comprises 64 pages and has an initial circulation of over 100,000 copies. The Online version offers news and information as well as numerous opportunities for readers to participate and network.

Urs Buess and Remo Leupin will share the editorial management of the new medium. Buess previously worked as deputy editor-in-chief of the Basler Zeitung (Baz), while Leupin was a member of the Beobachter editorial team. Tobias Faust is the managing director of Tageswoche. In total, the Team The publication employs around thirty permanent and part-time employees in the publishing and editorial departments. All of them work for both the printed and electronic editions.

"Intensive dialog with readers"

In terms of content, Tageswoche reports on "everything that moves the Basel region, Switzerland and the world", as co-editorial director Urs Buess explains: "Tageswoche produces innovative quality journalism and maintains an intensive dialog with readers using the latest technological means." Remo Leupin, his colleague on the editorial board, adds: "We know that the days when journalists had a monopoly, so to speak, on disseminating information and opinions are over. The media world has become more complex; new media such as Facebook, Twitter and co. show that there is a great need to express oneself." Tageswoche therefore also wants to offer "plenty of space for all those who want to spread news and express their opinions".

Tageswoche is published by Neue Medien Basel AG. The Basel lawyer Thomas Gelzer and - as Chairman - the media consultant and former Beobachter and Baz editor-in-chief Ivo Bachmann, who played a key role in the launch and development of the project with his consulting firm Bachmann Medien, are members of the Board of Directors. The sole owner of Neue Medien Basel AG is the Foundation for Media Diversity in Basel. This was established last April with funds from the Levedo Foundation set up by Beatrice Oeri and is committed to a diverse media offering and an open, tolerant society. The foundation is chaired by Basel lawyer Andreas Miescher. The foundation board also includes Basel hotelier Franz-Xaver Leonhardt and entrepreneur and director Nicolas Ryhiner. The Tageswoche was developed in a process lasting several months. The design concept was created by Berlin designers Matthias Last and Manuel Bürger. The editorial system and online technology were developed by Sourcefabric, an open source organization based in Prague. The newspaper is printed by Zehnder Print in Wil SG.

Last but not least: Apple child vs. Apple's apple

The logo of a German café is causing red heads at Apple: it looks "highly similar" to its own logo, according to the accusation.

The symbol of the "Apfelkind" store shows a red apple with the silhouette of a girl. According to the US company, there is a "clear risk of confusion". There are fears that Apple's "distinctiveness and esteem" could suffer as a result. However, the creator of the logo denies having copied Apple's design. Rather, she was inspired by the apple orchard of her landlords.

At least the giant's questionable fight against the small café seems to be having a positive effect on it: she receives emails from all over the world, says the owner in an interview with Horizon.net. Many people would offer their help or ask about a franchise model. Her store has become more interesting since the matter became known, and her cups in particular are being bought more.

An apple looks the way an apple looks. Even with Thurgau Tourism it looks similar to Apple's - almost a little more similar. The only thing missing is the bitten-out piece. As I said - an apple is just an apple is just an apple.
