Aargauer Zeitung: Change in the editorial team, new department heads

Effective November 1, 2011, there will be various changes in the management structure of the AZ Aargauer Zeitung, affecting the editorial board and department heads.

The deputy editor-in-chief Philipp Mäder is now in charge of the "Aargau/Regions" section and in this function is also head of the Aargau department. Until now, Mäder has been the editor and head of the general editorial department (domestic, foreign, business, culture). The qualified historian grew up in eastern Switzerland and worked as editor of the "Tages-Anzeiger" newspaper. He has been with AZ since the beginning of 2009.

The previous Head of Aargau/Regions, Deputy Editor-in-Chief Werner De Schepper, is now responsible for special projects. In particular, he is responsible for the multimedia training of the editorial team. He will also continue to present "Duell Aktuell" on Tele M1. De Schepper is a qualified theologian and former editor-in-chief of "Blick". He has worked for AZ since 2008.

The new editor and head of the editorial office will be the current head of domestic affairs, Gieri Cavelty. The graduate historian was editor of the Swiss parliament for many years, including for "Südostschweiz" and "Tages-Anzeiger". Cavelty has worked for AZ since 2009.

As of January 1, 2012, Stefan Schmid will become head of domestic affairs and Cavelty's successor. Schmid has been working for the St. Galler Tagblatt since November 2005: first as domestic editor, then as head of domestic affairs and since 2009 as editor-in-chief and member of the editorial board. He previously wrote for the "Bund" and the "NZZ". Schmid studied and graduated in history and political science in Bern and Paris.

The Aargau Ost (Baden/Brugg/Zurzach) department has a new head of department: Martin Rupf will succeed Dieter Minder, who will continue to write about Baden and the region as editor. Rupf has a degree in law. After training at the media training center in Lucerne, he worked as an editor at AZ, first in the domestic section and then in the Baden section.

Council of States Committee: Against ban on advertising for small loans

The Economic Committees (WAK) of both chambers agree: Young people should be protected as much as possible from falling into the debt trap. There is debate, however, over whether advertising for small loans should be banned as a result.

The National Council had spoken out in favor of a ban. Now the Economic Affairs Committee of the Council of States is opposing it. By 5 votes to 2 with 2 abstentions, it recommends to the Council that a parliamentary initiative by Josiane Aubert (SP/VD) should not be followed. According to SDA, the committee argues that a total ban on advertising would be too great an encroachment on economic freedom.

Both committees approved a more moderate demand: small lenders should have to spend part of their turnover on prevention. The Council of States committee approved a parliamentary initiative by Hugues Hiltpold (FDP/GE) by 4 votes to 3 with 2 abstentions, as reported by the parliamentary services on Tuesday according to SDA. This allows the National Council committee to prepare a draft bill.

The majority in the National Council was of the opinion that a ban on advertising would help to tackle the root of the problem. It would be hypocritical to strengthen prevention while continuing to allow advertising for small loans, said initiator Josiane Aubert. Advertising makes young people believe that they can consume without restriction.

Matter & Gretener: Free Holiday Republic of Saas-Fee proclaimed

The agency Matter & Gretener won the pitch for the Saas-Fee/Saastal Tourism budget and has launched a communications campaign for the vacation region.

80 percent sunny days, 100 percent guaranteed snow and up to 4545 meters above sea level: the four Valais communities of Saas-Balen, Saas-Grund, Saas-Almagell and Saas-Fee believe that there is nowhere else as beautiful as here. That's why last Saturday, in a spectacular ceremony with church bells ringing and a huge fireworks display, they declared their independence from the usual vacation regions and proudly proclaimed the Free Holiday Republic of Saas-Fee. The founding ceremony was attended by the people of the four municipalities, their presidents, numerous winter holiday guests and national celebrities. For example, the singer Kisha and her band CH presented their new song "Saas-Fee".

The idea of founding a state is not only reflected in posters, advertisements, brochures and the online area, but also in a wealth of other measures. For example, vacation guests now have "civil rights" (such as the "right to look down on the Matterhorn from the cathedral"), the guest card is designed as a passport and restaurants with foreign cuisine are embassies (for example from Italy or Thailand). In addition, the Free Republic of Saas-Fee has a national dish created by Gault Millau "Chef of the Year" 2007 Markus Neff, its own country license plate for the rear of the car and a national television station that regularly broadcasts via Facebook, YouTube and Saas-fee.ch humorous news. Probably the most spectacular measure of the campaign, however, is the construction of a border house with a barrier in front of Saas-Balen, the first village in the Free Republic of Saas-Fee. A border guard was even employed to guard the national border.

The marketing association Saas-Fee/Saas Valley Tourism and the Zurich agency Matter & Gretener, which won the budget for the well-known vacation region in a competitive presentation last July, are behind the communication offensive.

Ombudsman: FDP complaint against Swiss Radio DRS supported

Swiss Radio DRS violated the principle of objectivity in a report on FDP Federal Councilor Johann Schneider-Ammann. This is the conclusion reached by Achille Casanova, the ombudsman for the German-speaking part of the SRG.

Casanova responded to a complaint from the FDP. The party had taken exception to a report on Swiss radio DRS about its Federal Councillor Johann Schneider-Ammann. The ombudsman concludes that Schneider-Ammann was mistakenly held personally and solely responsible for the policy of the Federal Council as a whole. "I therefore find a violation of the principle of objectivity," Casanova writes in the final report.

The criticism is directed at a contribution in the "Rendez-vous" program of September 1. In it, the role of the economics minister in dealing with the Swiss franc crisis was highlighted. The day before, the Federal Council had approved a CHF 870 million aid package for the economy. Again two weeks earlier, Schneider-Ammann had held out the prospect of a package worth 2 billion francs. The report's introduction says: "...his (Schneider-Ammann's) announcements draw a less than clear line." Subsequently, statements of the FDP Federal Councilor are played, which he had made at three different media conferences.

Violation of due diligence

In a letter to the ombudsman's office in mid-September, the FDP complained that the article violated the duty of care. The accused Federal Councillor was not given the opportunity to comment, nor were third parties given a chance to speak in support of the thesis. The quotes were also taken out of context.

Lis Borner, editor-in-chief of Swiss Radio DRS, counters in a letter to the ombudsman's office: A federal councilor must be held accountable for his public statements. The report was "undoubtedly very critical of Federal Councillor Schneider-Ammann", but reflected the general perception at the time of broadcast.

In fact, all the media have criticized the Federal Council's policy as lacking a concept, Casanova writes. The fact that this was also critically analyzed by Radio DRS was "journalistically downright compelling. The ombudsman considers it inadmissible that the criticism is focused on a single member of the national government, although he "clearly" represented the opinion of the college. According to Casanova, however, the criticism would have been admissible if the article had been recognizable as a commentary.

The ombudsman's office mediates between the parties involved in complaints against SRG. Its report is only of a declaratory nature; it has no decision-making power or authority to issue directives. In a second step, however, complainants can appeal to the Independent Complaints Authority (UBI) of the Swiss Confederation. (SDA)

KSB: Image ad realized for VW

The KSB agency has created a campaign for Volkswagen Switzerland designed to say «thank you» to the Swiss people for the trust they have placed in the company.

The agency writes in a press release that in reader surveys on trust in automobile brands, VW is ranked top in Switzerland more often than any other brand. Volkswagen Switzerland and the advertisers from KSB Krieg Schlupp Bürge have therefore developed a motif especially for Reader's Digest to say "thank you" to the Swiss for this trust.

The resulting motif shows the new VW Beetle in the style and design of the legendary VW Beetle advertisement of the 1960s - that of its ancestor. It is intended to demonstrate that, despite all the technical advances, not much basically changes when you build THE car. This is precisely why a Volkswagen has always remained a Volkswagen ever since.
