Vier Pfoten Germany publishes new campaign motif

The animal welfare organization Vier Pfoten Deutschland today presented a new poster motif on the subject of crate stands. It comes from the Hamburg agency Grimm Gallun and Holtappels.

The agricultural industry refers to body-sized cages in which breeding sows have to spend a large part of their lives as crate stalls, Vier Pfoten said in a statement. These cages are so small that the sow can't even turn around - not to mention her other needs, such as walking or wallowing. In Switzerland, crate stalls have long been banned.

The poster motif shows the perspective of a sow: a few bars and a dreary wall, taken in a real breeding farm. To draw attention to the suffering of female pigs, the slogan declares: "Whoever lives here is a poor sow". Vier Pfoten appeals to politicians to abolish the crate stall.

Stern.de launches social reader for Facebook

The news portal Stern.de is the first German media brand to launch a social reader for Facebook. The application is now available.

According to Meedia.de, major media brands such as the Wall Street Journal and the British Guardian have already developed such apps for the world's largest social network. If a user installs such an application, they will see a news offer selected and specially designed for Facebook when they call up the subpage. If they then read an article about it - without leaving Facebook - their network friends are informed about it. The settings for who in the circle of friends receives the reading recommendations can be changed. One consequence of the Social Reader is that the "Like" button becomes superfluous.

Greulich Culture Prize 2012 goes to Kulturkritik.ch

The 2012 Greulich Culture Prize, worth 10,000 francs, goes to the culture blog Kulturkritik.ch. Launched in 2009, the project responds to changes in local cultural reporting, which has seen its space in print media dwindle.

Kulturkritik.ch is characterized by innovative approaches to editing, financing and promoting young talent in cultural journalism and is supported by various Zurich cultural event organizers, as detailed in a press release. It is run by the Cultural Journalism Platform of the Zurich University of the Arts, whose "Publish & Communicate" Master's degree program is attended by aspiring cultural journalists and active cultural critics. The project will be represented at the award ceremony on March 16 by its initiator Stefan Schöbi, Deputy Head of Communication and lecturer at the ZHDK. The juror for the Greulich Culture Prize 2012 was media expert Kurt Imhof, Professor of Sociology and Journalism Studies at the University of Zurich.

The Greulich Cultural Foundation, based in Zurich, was established in April 2005. Its aim is to recognize and promote quality in cultural journalism. It is committed to journalistic training and the promotion of young journalists and aims to positively influence the quality of journalism in general. It is part of the overall "Greulich" project, which the Swiss lawyer. Thomas B. Brunner opened in 2003 as a restaurant, bar and design hotel as well as a place of modern urban culture in Zurich's Kreis 4 district.

Farner Romandie with new management

Frédéric Jacquemoud, Director, and Corinne Bersier, Deputy Director, will lead the Farner Romandie communications agency effective immediately. The Farner team consists of seven full-time employees and three freelancers.

Frédéric Jacquemoud, previously a partner in a Geneva-based communications consulting agency, assumed his new duties on March 1, according to a statement issued Thursday. After studying humanities at the University of Geneva, graduating from the elite French university Sciences-Po Paris (IEP) and obtaining a postgraduate diploma in business management at the Institut Cnam-Intec in Paris, he started his professional career at Publicis Consultants in Paris, for which he worked for several years. Back in Geneva, at Publicis Live he looked after international clients such as the UN and the United Arab Emirates as well as Swiss clients such as Zurich Financial Services, Sicpa and Holcim.

After six years with Pricewaterhouse Coopers, he took Corinne Bersier already started her work at Farner Lausanne on January 1, 2012. Corinne Bersier graduated from the University of Geneva with a licentiate in political science and a master's degree in communication and media studies. She started her PR career at Pielken & Partners in Gland, then joined dairy products manufacturer Cremo as a communications officer for several years. This was followed by further professional positions at Pricewaterhouse Coopers in Zurich as a Proposal Specialist and - back in French-speaking Switzerland - in PWC's Business Development division. In addition to her professional activities, she graduated from the University of Geneva in Enterpreneurship & Business Development.

Last but not least: "Interview, or something bad will happen!"

Finding a good job in advertising is certainly not easy. Andrew Grinter and Lee Spencer-Michaelsen from Melbourne probably knew that too - and turned themselves into criminal blackmailers without further ado.

The two young creatives bought URLs containing the names of major Australian creative agencies. They then pasted together blackmail letters from colorful letters - each containing only the Internet address with the name of the respective agency bosses. If they called up the page, they were asked to offer a job interview. Otherwise, they were threatened, bad things would happen to the website. You can see the rest of the campaign in the video.

Incidentally, the two men were - as you would expect - successful with the campaign: they are now part of the creative team at Ogilvy One agency DT Digital.

Social media study 2012: Banks lagging behind

Swiss banks are significantly less effective at communicating via social media than their international competitors. Citibank tops the list, followed by Société Générale and ABN AMRO. Credit Suisse, the leading Swiss bank, ranks a mere 22nd.

Assetinum.com conducted a study of communication on Facebook, Twitter, Youtube, Linkedin and social media integration in the websites of the 50 leading banks in wealth management and private banking, using numerous evaluation criteria. The result: Citibank leads the rankings ahead of Société Générale, ABN AMRO, Barclays, Wells Fargo, Standard Chartered, Deutsche Bank and Vanguard, all scoring at least 70 points. The social media strategies of the leading banks do not only focus on financial topics - sponsoring campaigns in the areas of sports, art, science, culture, development aid or sustainability also attract attention on Facebook & Co. The top-ranked banks are convincing not least because of the interaction with users on their social media channels. The best Swiss bank is Credit Suisse in 22nd place.

> Top 50

Lay social media strategies

On average, however, the social media competence of the banks is poor: 27 banks do not even achieve half of the possible score. In the "Facebook" category, there are 27 banks, in the "Website, Mobile & Co" category 25, in the "Twitter" category also 25, in the "Youtube" category 29 and in the "LinkedIn" category 21 banks that do not achieve half of the maximum score. "A surprisingly large number of banks still lack a convincing social media strategy," said Benjamin Manz, managing director of Assetinum.com. Although the desire of bank customers for more transparency and information content is increasing markedly worldwide - not least thanks to digital media.

Using social media to combat "shitstorms

A paradigm shift is underway in the area of social media, which is also permanently changing the media behavior of wealthy bank customers. Digital media are not only used to search for information, but increasingly also to build and maintain reputation and to
Customer acquisition. Reputation-threatening "shitstorms" can best be prevented if a bank itself has a prominent presence in the important social media channels and can thus respond to the accusations made in good time. It is therefore increasingly important, especially for renowned banks with a demanding clientele, to have a presence on the social network. "Banks need to hurry while they can still jump on the bandwagon. Because building an active Internet community takes time," says Benjamin Manz.

Banks on Facebook in hibernation

Facebook has become the central social interaction platform. It is therefore all the more surprising that over a third of the banks surveyed still do not have an active Facebook profile. Surprisingly, this also includes Goldman Sachs, which is itself invested in Facebook. The best performers were Royal Bank of Canada, ABN AMRO, Nordea and Standard Chartered, which actively involve their users in their communications and let them participate in online events. On average, however, the banks achieved just one-third of the possible score - a sobering result. Also, only 18 banks, or around half of the banks with an active Facebook profile, responded to an Assetinum test query via Facebook - a clear sign of the lack of interaction with users.

Twitter and YouTube channels: Just a token exercise for many banks

The banks surveyed are not much more adept at communicating with the social news service Twitter either: Although 42 out of 50 banks have a Twitter account, only 26 or about half of the banks actively respond to users' tweets. Only 13 out of 50 banks consider wealth management topics. Also, only just under half of the banks have an up-to-date YouTube channel, of which again only 15 banks pay particular attention to wealth management topics. At least all banks - with the exception of Bank J. Safra, which comes in last - have a Linkedin profile, which is primarily intended to serve the human resources departments. However, a closer look at the LinkedIn profiles shows that only 14 banks present additional content and just 8 institutions maintain a LinkedIn user.

Poor online and mobile integration of social media

The deficits are also evident on the banks' own websites: Almost half of the banks do not sufficiently integrate social media into their websites. Only 19 banks have their own blog, and only 6 banks allow users to interact with the bank via the website in the form of an interactive blog or chat. Only 33 banks have a subsite on wealth management or private banking topics. Only 22 or less than half of the banks have a website optimized for smartphones, and 14 banks have no mobile app.

Franz & René: Campaign created for TPF

The Bern-based bilingual agency Franz & René is launching a 360° communications campaign to promote a new service introduced by the Fribourg Public Transportation Authority (TPF): the SMS ticket via 873.

Passengers will be able to buy their ticket by SMS in the future. The smiley conveys the simple message to the general public. "The inclusion of the number 873 gives the symbol its uniqueness. It has a positive vibe and is instantly recognized. It is the common thread throughout the entire campaign," explains agency partner Luciano Gerber.

For the launch of the new service, comprehensive 360° advertising measures were taken, which included conventional media - bus signage, advertisements in the press, pocket guides, information at ticket machines and Microsite - combine with dynamic media - guerrilla action and street marketing in conjunction with a competition on Facebook. The aim of the campaign is to ensure that the number 873 sticks in the minds of the people of Freiburg as quickly as possible.

FHNW awards further education scholarship for communication specialists

The University of Applied Sciences Northwestern Switzerland (FHNW) is awarding a scholarship of 20,000 francs for the part-time MAS Corporate Communication Management master's program.

With this scholarship, the FHNW School of Business aims to support well-trained and experienced communication specialists with limited financial resources who are planning to re-enter professional life after a career break. The MAS in Corporate Communication Management is designed to facilitate this career move. The 13th course of this Master's degree in integrated communication management begins on May 2, 2012.

The group of people returning to work seems particularly worthy of support to those responsible for the program. "These people often have broad and enriching life experience, which is extremely useful in day-to-day communication work," says program director Norbert Winistörfer.

The same requirements apply to those interested in a scholarship as to other course participants: a solid initial education and several years of professional experience in a field of communication are required. The admission process, which includes a personal interview, is no different from the regular admission procedure.

The application deadline for the scholarship is April 2, 2012. Detailed information on the scholarship and the Master's program can be found at Corporate-communication.ch.

Unique wins intoxication

Following an agency evaluation and the resulting pitch, the internationally active cosmetics company Rausch, headquartered in Kreuzlingen, has chosen the Küsnacht-based agency Unikat.

For 120 years, Rausch has manufactured products with herbal extracts that serve holistic hair and body care. According to the agency's statement, Rausch is one of the few remaining independent and entrepreneur-led family businesses in the cosmetics industry that produce in Switzerland. A first joint project will be the next campaign focus in the summer.

TBS: Marcy Moëlla new to the team

TBS Identity has gained a new member of staff: Marcy Moëlla has been on board the Zurich agency since the beginning of 2012.

Anyone who had dealings with TBS Identity in 2012 will already know Marcy Moëlla personally, the agency said in a press release. The former publishing assistant masters her presence at reception and managing the secretariat both charmingly and confidently, so that she has also been involved in the TBS project organization. Her professional experience in the media industry and in sales would obviously be of benefit to her.
