Last but not least: The triple resurrection of the page 1 girl

After 28 years, *Bild* has done away with the «Page 1 Girl.» The newspaper reported this on Friday. On Monday, the paper ran the headline: "*Bild*'s 'Page 1 Girls' are causing a stir (almost) all over the world." And indeed, the world seems to be interested in this news.

Under the heading "Taps", the latest front-page nude was presented in grand style on Friday. And the world seems to really care about this news: Over the weekend, 20 countries reported on the disappearance of the nude from Bild's front page, the tabloid wrote on Monday. In England, for example, the BBC TV station enthusiastically notes, "There's a real debate in Germany about the role of women." And the Guardian would like to see the same change of heart in British newspapers. In the U.S., USA Today and The Seattle Times quote the Bavarian justice minister: "Good decision." In India, the Hindu priest Rajan Zed even publishes a press release on Bild-Girl. In it, he calls the abolition a "step in the right direction. And on the Fiji Islands, too, enthusiasm can hardly be contained; The Jet writes: "Hindus welcome the end of Page 1 nudity in Bild". And in Holland, De Telegraaf headlines: "Duitse Bild schrapt topless" - which means "Deutsche Bild deletes 'topless'".

What the media all over the world seem to have overlooked in their euphoria: There will still be naked facts in the Bild newspaper - just "more modern, better packaged inside the paper. Where exactly in the newspaper the girls will have their place in the future is still open. "We at Bild are not yet sure ourselves where the Bild girl will have her place. That's why you, dear readers, will find Bianca in the paper three times today." Three times! Whether that pleases the Hindu priest and the rest of the world is extremely questionable. Let's hope that at least the priest will remain ignorant of the bitter truth - so that he can continue to live in peace with himself and, above all, with Germany.

LZ Medien: Sales down slightly

The LZ Group generated revenue of 165.1 million Swiss francs in fiscal year 2011. This represents a slight decrease of 1.3 million Swiss francs, or 0.8 percent, compared with the previous year.

The decrease in sales of 1.3 million Swiss francs is mainly the result of lower printing revenues. Advertising revenues totaled 52.4 million Swiss francs, which is 2.1 million Swiss francs or 4.2 percent higher than the previous year. According to the press release, the increase is due to the acquisition of Anzeiger Luzern; however, due to the difficult market environment that has prevailed since the fall, there would have been a slight decrease in advertising revenues after adjustment for the acquisition. A decrease of CHF 0.9 million or 2.1 percent to a total of CHF 41.1 million was recorded in subscription and single copy sales. The decrease is influenced by the sale of the newspaper title Die Region, but also by declining newspaper circulations. Revenues from the printing and calendar business segments declined, mainly due to the integrated "Anzeiger Luzer" (newspaper printing contract in the previous year) and lower revenues in the commercial business as a result of restructuring. Sales amounted to 46.8 million Swiss francs, 3.4 million Swiss francs or 6.8 percent behind the previous year. Revenues from electronic media and other income amounted to 24.8 million Swiss francs and were 0.9 million Swiss francs or 3.7 percent higher than in the previous year thanks to increased radio advertising.

Operating expenses increased only slightly by CHF 0.7 million. On the one hand, the acquisition of Anzeiger Luzern resulted in additional expenses. On the other hand, costs were significantly reduced in the commercial business due to restructuring. Finally, the increase in costs compared to the previous year was mainly due to expenditure on digital product developments. In the year under review, expenses amounted to CHF 151.5 million, corresponding to an increase of 0.5 percent. Ebit amounts to 13.6 million Swiss francs. Compared to the previous year, this represents a decrease of 2.0 million Swiss francs or 12.7 percent. The operating profit margin (Ebit) decreased from 9.4 percent to 8.3 percent.

The financial result was negative at 2.6 million Swiss francs, down 1.8 million Swiss francs on the previous year. Particularly in the case of strategic securities investments, losses in value had to be accepted in capital markets characterized by uncertainty. The other result showed a plus of CHF 1.1 million. Net profit for the year under review amounted to CHF 10.6 million, which corresponds to a year-on-year decline in profit of CHF 1.4 million or 11.7 percent. Total assets amounted to CHF 150.3 million at the end of 2011, of which equity accounted for CHF 95.2 million or 63.4 percent. There are an unchanged 78,000 shares issued, of which 3300 shares are held in treasury as a result of the share buyback program. The Board of Directors proposes to the Annual General Meeting a dividend of 105 Swiss francs per share (previous year: 100 Swiss francs).

At the end of 2011, the LZ Group employed 555 people (previous year 562), who shared 476 positions (previous year 485).

Two Chinese YouTube rivals join forces

Two Chinese YouTube rivals are joining forces. China's largest online video company, Youku.com, is acquiring the market's number two, Tudou, for about one billion dollars, both companies announced on Monday.

The takeover creates an industry leader that stands out from the competition in terms of size and number of customers in the world's largest Internet market with more than 450 million users. Until now, the two competitors have fought bitterly against each other. At the beginning of the year, Youku filed a lawsuit against Tudou for copyright infringement and demanded millions in compensation. Analysts welcomed the transaction. This is a step in the right direction in a very competitive market.

As with the Google subsidiary YouTube, videos can be uploaded, shared and rated via the Chinese platforms. Revenues are generated primarily through advertising. (SDA/RTD)

Yourposition launches e-commerce unit

The Zurich-based search engine marketing agency Yourposition has launched a new business unit: Under the leadership of Ulrike Hannemann, who has been with Yourposition since 2008, the e-commerce unit began operations in early March with its first new clients.

"The e-commerce sector has always been one of our strategic focal points in the decade of our existence. The fact that we are now bundling our services specifically for e-commerce customers is therefore the logical next step," says Lukas Stuber, Managing Director of Yourposition, explaining the launch.

The new unit combines the agency's core competencies - search engine optimization, AdWords and web analytics - specifically for e-commerce needs. Pricing is increasingly based on performance-based remuneration, in line with the performance-oriented client segment.

The new e-commerce unit of Yourposition will be presented at the Swiss Online Marketing (SOM) from March 14 to 15, 2012, further information can be found at Yourposition.ch/e-commerce.

Media Focus publishes SEM Trend Report 3/2012

In February as well, leisure, sports, tourism, and retail are the two sectors with the largest percentage increases in their budgets.

In the case of the former in particular, it is worth taking a closer look at the data, Media Focus said in a statement: In terms of content, no seasonal focus can be identified that would be responsible for the budgetary boom. Because in the travel industry simply everything is advertised. This highly competitive industry is led by various pure online travel platforms (Ebookers.ch & Co.), while the classic travel providers such as Tui.ch, Hotelplan.ch and Kuoni.ch struggle against this armada. In absolute terms, the industry is also in a league of its own: the travel industry's budget for search engine advertising is about the same as that of all the other nine industries combined and around twice as high as that of the industry below.

Significantly less was invested in the insurance sector due to seasonal effects: Comparison platforms, universal insurers and line-of-business insurers are all active in the market, with the latter being responsible for the decline in budgets. Health insurers successively scaled down their campaigns after the last change window in the fall and have now almost without exception disappeared from the top 20 in the industry.

Webguerillas Zurich has developed a new digital strategy for the Cardinal beer brand. The agency won the pitch and will serve as Cardinal's lead digital agency.

In addition to the redesign of the website, a comprehensive social media strategy was developed, as the agency writes in a statement. The ticket sweepstakes is integrated into the Facebook page of Cardinal Draft, but can also be used on the Microsite or played on the mobile version.

Fairness Commission: More than 400 complaints received for the first time

The number of cases handled by the Swiss Fair Trading Commission (SLK) has risen once again. In 2011, the advertising industry’s self-regulatory body received more than 400 complaints for the first time.

Of the 441 complaints, around two thirds were upheld. The number of proceedings has been rising steadily since 2005, and in 2010 the SLK had to rule on 382 complaints. This is shown in the activity report 2011 of the Fairness Commission. According to its statement on Saturday, the offense of "aggressive sales methods" has also continued to increase.

While 34 percent of complaints fell into this category in 2009 and slightly more than half in 2010, this figure had already risen to 62.1 percent of all submissions in 2011. Among the other grounds for complaint were "misleading" or "sexism". For example, the commission considered "sexism" to be fulfilled in the case of a butcher's shop. It had advertised its meat with women's legs and the slogan "best meat in town". A rebuke by the SLK to a nuclear power plant operator who had advertised nuclear power plants as "CO2-free" caused a stir.

SLK pushed to the limits of its capacity
Of last year's complaints, three quarters concerned commercial communication to an individual address, for example by telephone. Just one quarter related to the public domain, such as advertising on the Internet, on posters or in the media. In 2008, this ratio was still balanced. The increase in commercial communication to individuals has led to the commission reaching the limits of its capacity, the report says. For this reason, a processing fee of 50 francs per complaint was introduced on an experimental basis at the beginning of 2012. Complaints against advertising in the public domain continue to be exempt from the fee. This is because ensuring fairness in the public sector is the commission's main goal, the activity report continues.

Last but not least: Reading your own name in the newspaper

The goal of many young people is still to find their way into the media. And to finally read their own name in the newspaper, under a report they have researched and written themselves.

But how do I find exciting topics, how do I critically scrutinize them, how do I prepare an interview, how do I write a press release? These tasks are the focus of the one-month course at the University of Liechtenstein in Vaduz. This is the third course in a row: The Government of the Principality of Liechtenstein and the University of Liechtenstein are organizing the International Summer Academy for Journalism and Public Relations. The aim is to promote journalistic reporting on socio-political issues by awarding 12 scholarships. The call for applications is therefore deliberately aimed at journalistic newcomers and young professionals from the four-country region of Germany, Switzerland, Austria and Liechtenstein, according to Klaus Tschütscher, Head of Government, on Presseportal.ch, explaining the reasons for organizing the Summer Academy. In 2010, a student from South Tyrol also took part, so the group even came from five countries. Not only students are invited to take part in this project, but also young people who - with or without a degree - want to take the plunge into a career in journalism, Tschütscher explains.

The training, which has a strong practical focus, is free of charge for the 12 young professionals. Nationally and internationally experienced journalism and PR experts from all four countries pass on their knowledge in workshops. All scholarship holders will learn media work from the ground up. The training is run in cooperation with the two daily newspapers Vaterland and Volksblatt, in which reports by the young journalists appear regularly during the course.

Despite or perhaps because of its practical orientation, the Summer Academy in Liechtenstein is consistently designed in accordance with the Bologna principles and is conducted accordingly. At the end of the academy, all positively assessed students earn 10 ECTS points as well as a certificate of attendance from the University of Liechtenstein. However, the primary goal of education is not knowledge, but action, emphasizes Claudia Schanza, Director of Studies.

The International Summer Academy runs from August 6 to 31, 2012.

Trend sign: The promotional cell phone

Smartphones are all the rage but are relatively expensive. Note: Market saturation is on the horizon, and growth will only be possible with new pricing models—for example, with the promotional cell phone.

Instead of money, the advertising cell phone is paid for with attention and information on consumer behavior. In the USA, for example, the online mail-order company offers a discounted version of its Kindle e-reader, on which advertisements for its own offers are discreetly displayed. This principle also applies to the advertising cell phone: before it can be used, an advertisement must be clicked away. This is tailored to the respective user and encourages an immediate reaction. This can of course be an online order, but also a coupon that can be redeemed in-store. In return, a credit is credited to the cell phone account each time. Surveys are particularly lucrative and actually the highlight of the advertising mobile phone. Answer three questions about your purchasing preferences for orange juice and get five minutes of phone calls or surfing. In this way, the advertising mobile gets to know the user's preferences and can optimize future advertising accordingly. The advertising cell phone provides marketers with a unique platform for market research. Not only can surveys be carried out in no time at all, but the panel data is uniquely in-depth. When it comes to the data obtained in this way, the Werbe-Handy is relentlessly transparent. Not only is the basic approach of paying with information instead of money clearly communicated, but the findings also flow back to the user: "Those who prefer the same orange juice prefer to drink coffee anyway".

The promotional cell phone will be particularly popular with bargain hunters because it offers the coolest deals and promotions. And the promotional cell phone is integrated into the world of social media, helping it to go viral: "Just bought 3for2 orange juice at the # superstore thanks to my # promotional cell phone," tweets the device on the user's account after redeeming a mobile coupon that arrived after completing the orange juice survey.

The promotional cell phone is a concept idea that is presented here exclusively. If someone (a major distributor?) goes for it, a snappy name will certainly be easy to find. But does the promotional cell phone have any chance of being realized or is it just a daydream? Let us know what you think in the comments section below.

Joos Wolfangel: A cartoon needs no words

Vision impairment is affecting an increasing number of people in our population. The SBS Swiss Library for the Blind, Visually Impaired, and People with Reading Disabilities is committed to making the widest possible range of information accessible to those affected.

In order to make the range of books in large print known to a wider audience, Joos Wolfangel has developed catoons that get to the heart of visual impairment charmingly and without words. The endearing character is intended to give the advertisement subjects a quick recognition value and help the filler advertisements to be placed in one or other daily newspaper or magazine.

With the support of the public sector and thanks to private donors, the SBS procures and produces books in large print, Braille, eBooks and audio books. People with a recognized visual impairment can take advantage of these and other free SBS services.
