Federal Administrative Court: Radio reception fee for computer owners is legal

Owners of computers with broadband Internet access must pay radio license fees. According to the Federal Administrative Court, multifunctional devices of this kind offer the same variety and quality of program reception as conventional radios.

In 2009, the fee collection agency Billag obliged a computer owner without a conventional radio to pay radio fees. Following the Federal Office of Communications (OFCOM), the Federal Administrative Court has now also rejected the appeal of the person concerned. The decision can still be appealed to the Federal Supreme Court.

According to the court, multifunctional devices such as computers also qualify as reception devices under the Radio and Television Act. The decisive factor for the obligation to pay fees is that they enable a comparable reception of radio programs as conventional devices. This is the case for computers with a broadband internet connection. Both the variety of programs that can be received and the reception quality correspond to that of a conventional radio. According to the court, it is irrelevant for the obligation to pay fees whether someone actually listens to the radio via the computer.

The person concerned had argued, among other things, that he was being treated unfairly compared to television consumers. In the case of TV reception via computer, it is assumed that the owner has taken out a special subscription or is registered with a free provider. For radio reception, on the other hand, the mere existence of a broadband or ADSL connection and the corresponding software is sufficient.

The court counters that, unlike radio, equivalent reception is not possible with TV without a subscription or registration. According to the court, it is also acceptable that companies can be exempted from radio fees if they prohibit their employees from receiving radio via the Internet in writing.

Bakom spokesman Roberto Rivola also points out that Parliament will soon be debating the proposal as to whether radio and TV fees should in future be charged at a flat rate per household, regardless of ownership of the corresponding receivers. (sda)

Swiss Post puts together 50 million savings package

Swiss Post plans to save about 50 million francs over the next few years. Customers shouldn't notice any difference: The cuts will primarily target management and central staff functions.

Savings will be made in communications, finance, the legal department and human resources, said Swiss Post spokesman Oliver Flüeler in response to a report in the Berner Zeitung newspaper on Tuesday. He did not want to disclose details because the measures were internal. However, Flüeler did confirm the closure of the internal library at Swiss Post headquarters in Bern. This comprises around 15'000 media and over 100 journals on business administration, IT, logistics and other relevant specialist areas.

The closure of the library alone will save 600'000 francs per year. The aim of the savings package is to save around 50 million francs over the next 3 to 4 years by exploiting synergies or dispensing with tasks, Flüeler said. (sda)

New agency for winter sports marketing and digital communication

Andre Wolfensberger, Daniel Baur and Marcel Wehrle have founded a new agency together. The communication agency Duckstance combines social media, online advertising, events and direct communication in the action, winter sports and lifestyle sector.

In addition to various winter sports portals (Twoleftfeet.ch, Raiders.ch, Yooo.tv, Freeride-county.ch), the agency operates the lifestyle online store Alot.ch. In addition, Duckstance offers a snowpark advertising pool to meet the target group of young freestyle athletes throughout Switzerland on the one hand, and on the other hand to advertise in ski resorts in general through an eye-catching and emotionally charged form, according to a Duckstance release on Tuesday.

Already in the last century launched Duckstance.com with Twoleftfeet.ch, the first online community for snowboarders and young people. When the company was founded back then, it was therefore obvious that the name should be associated with snowboarding, according to the agency. In the following years, further digital platforms for winter sports enthusiasts and own events as well as party labels followed.
The three founders - Andre Wolfensberger (graduate in marketing), Daniel Baur (Master of European Business) and Marcel Wehrle (Master in Media and Communication Science) of Duckstance look after clients such as Swisscom, Raiffeisen, Coop, HTC, Red Bull or Swissski in their winter sports marketing activities.

Google expands video advertising on Youtube

Google wants to attract more advertisers to YouTube. A new function will make it easier for them to book video campaigns with their own clips - any company can make it big, the company advertised in a company blog.

After several months of testing, "AdWords for Videos" is now available to everyone. Companies can use it to bid for advertising space for certain keywords and place ads in the environment of suitable content. They only pay when users click on the clips; they set the campaign budget themselves. Administration is done via the interface that companies can also use to place ads in Google's search engine. Video ads on Youtube increase hits on a website by an average of 20 percent, Google writes in its blog. (sda)

Frontwork builds for Delizio tasting stand at Zurich main station

From April 20 to 26, Delizio will go head-to-head with the market leader in a blind tasting at Zurich Central Station. The signage company Frontwork designed and built the 52-square-meter Delizio promotional booth based on a concept by the Ruf Lanz advertising agency.

Frontwork also produced all the stand elements and coordinated their services with suppliers such as Habegger and Lichtwerk. Frontwork's advertising technicians erected the stand in just a few hours the night before the start of the promotion. Delizio wants to convince coffee drinkers of its own product. Under the guardian angel of Niki de Saint Phalle, passers-by test which coffee suits their taste. In return, they receive a voucher for 192 coffee capsules, which can be redeemed when buying a Delizio machine.

Marc Sway is brand ambassador for Yootea

With Marc Sway, the Zurich-based soft drink is receiving support in further expanding its brand awareness. The Swiss musician and Yootea have pledged their loyalty to each other for the next three years.

As part of the collaboration, Statement is designing an advertising campaign under the motto "I am yootea, are you?". In addition to an engagement at the Orange Cinemas 2012 in Zurich, Bern and Basel, this includes classic advertising measures and the odd guerrilla action to match the brand. The claim "I am yootea, are you?", which was specially developed for the campaign, is intended to sum up the philosophy of the cooperation: "Live consciously with yourself, your surroundings and your environment. Be cheerful and dare to do something in life again. You can only win."
