More than 3 million Swiss people use streaming services

The latest Streaming Report provides detailed baseline information on streaming usage among Swiss internet users for the second time. The latest figures show that the percentage of streaming users has risen slightly by 2.6 percent to 60.8 percent over the past six months.

The growth among heavy streaming users—that is, Internet users who use streaming services on the World Wide Web daily or almost daily—is significant: Since the last survey, this user group has grown by 30.5 percent and currently accounts for 12 percent of all Internet users.

The sociodemographic profile of streaming users is quite clear: With a 60/40 ratio, there are significantly more men than women among streaming users. The gender ratio is even more pronounced among heavy users, three-quarters of whom are male.

The age distribution also paints a clear picture: The share of 14- to 29-year-olds in the Swiss Internet population is 27.2 percent. Among streaming users, they are accordingly overrepresented, accounting for 37.5% of the total. Among heavy users, 55.8%—more than half—are under 30 years old. The opposite is true for users in the 40+ age group: They account for about 50% of the Internet community, but make up only 37.1% of the streaming user group. With a share of 22.5% among heavy users, they do not even represent a quarter of that group.

Content on video and news/TV portals is popular
In addition to basic information, the survey also asked about the streaming services used: At 53.9 percent of internet users—or 2.85 million people—the video portal category (YouTube, Clipfish, MyVideo, etc.) comprises the largest user group. Streaming services on news and TV portals are also popular, used several times a month or more frequently by 42.1 percent of internet users—or approximately 2.23 million people. At 6 percent, the growth here is significant compared to the previous survey. Just under a third of internet users regularly use web radio services (32.8 percent) and audio archives (30.2 percent).

Compared to the previous survey, the number of web TV users has also increased: About 1.5 million people—or 27.7 percent of internet users—use services from providers such as Wilmaa, Zattoo, or Teleboy several times a month or more frequently. This represents an increase of 2.2 percent over the past six months.

Last but not least: Roger Federer and the greatest little machine

The Publicis agency has released a new commercial featuring Roger Federer for Jura. The commercial is set on a coffee-themed tennis court.

To achieve this, a tennis court was built out of thousands of glasses filled with coffee, espresso, cappuccino, and latte macchiato. Or so it seems. During the filming of the TV commercial with Roger Federer, no fewer than 600 coffee glasses were filled and filmed. However, the coffee tennis court was then completed in post-production using the ENA Micro 9 One Touch. The commercial was created to promote Jura’s smallest model—the One-Touch cappuccino machine. It was featured on TV, in print, and online.

I wonder if Roger Federer can outshine George Clooney as a brand ambassador with his coffee mugs?

Fifa World Cup 2018 and 2022 on SRG channels

More than two years before the next World Cup, SRG has secured the exclusive broadcasting rights to the two subsequent Fifa finals: All matches of the 2018 World Cup in Russia and the 2022 World Cup in Qatar will be broadcast live and in studio and magazine shows on SRG's TV channel chains in the usual framework, as was the case for the 2010 FIFA World Cup in South Africa and the 2014 FIFA World Cup in Brazil.

This also includes all radio and online rights. As a member of the guarantor group, i.e. the "medium and small nations" of the European Broadcasting Union (EBU, association of European public service broadcasters) based in Geneva, SRG was able to (co-)acquire the exclusive media exploitation rights of the two soccer World Cups at reasonable conditions, according to a statement by SRG on Presseportal.ch. The EBU had signed a contract with Fifa for the comprehensive rights to the 2018 and 2022 Fifa World Cup for a total of 37 members. The rights for the "big" territories such as Germany, Italy, France, Spain and England will be negotiated individually and directly by Fifa.

The parties have agreed not to disclose the amount of the license fee.
