Tagesanzeiger to have joint editor-in-chief for print and online in future

During the presentation of its half-year results at the end of August, Tamedia announced that it was considering merging the print and online editorial teams of the *Tagesanzeiger* and *Newsnet*. Now, the announced merger is also bringing about changes at the executive level.

In future, there will only be one editorial team. It is still unclear how it will be made up and when it will start work. Tamedia spokesperson Christoph Zimmer confirmed a corresponding report by the online portal Persoenlich.com on Friday.

At present, Peter Wälty is responsible for Newsnet and Markus Einsenhut and Res Strehle are co-editors-in-chief for the print editorial team. Although this structure will change as a result of the convergence project, it is possible that there will still be several people on the editorial board, Zimmer told Werbewoche. Merging the print and online editorial teams should also save costs. According to Zimmer, the savings in 2014 compared to 2012 should ultimately amount to around 15 percent. However, a significant part of this has already been realized through measures such as the discontinuation of the Tagesanzeiger regional section. Although Tamedia is still in the early stages of this project, there will certainly be no mass redundancies, Zimmer emphasizes.

Continued specialization

Tamedia plans to have made the most important decisions by the end of the year (Werbewoche.ch reported). However, the actual implementation is likely to take until the end of 2013. The Tagesanzeiger is particularly affected by the convergence strategy. A project team is now drawing up plans for merging the various editorial teams. Among other things, it is determining in which areas specialized print and online competencies continue to make sense and where not. How this can be implemented on a day-to-day basis is quickly determined on paper, but will take even more time in day-to-day implementation than the mere concept, as Zimmer says. However, the goal is certainly not a newsroom where everyone does everything. Specialization will continue to be important.

Imprint: Arguments lack credibility in view of record profits

Impressum is concerned about Tamedia's further move to standardize the information in its media. The economic arguments are implausible in view of the record profits, the professional association wrote on Friday. "We call on Tamedia not to repeat the mistakes of the 2009 wave of redundancies," warns Daniel Suter, President of Impressum and former journalist at the Tages Anzeiger.

The Newsnet editorial team works well and complements the paper media with additional perspectives, Impressum continued in the communiqué. Abolishing the independence of Newsnet would be a new loss for the diversity of opinion. Tamedia has already standardized a lot of information in its various media in the past in order to save on personnel, for example at the Bund or the Zurich regional newspapers.

As the largest private media company, Tamedia has a great responsibility towards both its staff and the public. Instead of planning new rationalizations without necessity, Tamedia should invest in the expansion of journalistic quality and diversity of opinion. This would strengthen Tamedia's credibility as a media company. According to the professional association, the company's record profits and healthy reserves make this possible. They therefore demand that Tamedia refrain from further downsizing plans and maintain its journalistic capacities.

According to Christoph Zimmer, Impressum's reaction indicates that the professional association has probably misunderstood something here. There can be no question of unification, he says. Rather, the two editorial offices, which previously operated under the Tagesanzeiger brand, are now to be merged into a single editorial office.

Lesch + Frei Zurich: Klick from KTP is back again

"Klick," the mascot for the online health insurance provider KPT designed by Lesch + Frei, appears in two new videos. With his clumsy charm, he is meant to highlight the benefits of KPT.

A personal advisor, for example, to whom one can turn 24 hours a day and who always knows advice. Even when the sick click has trouble taking his temperature due to a lack of mouth and arms. The comprehensive advice is one of the reasons why KPT always comes out on top in customer satisfaction surveys, the agency says in a statement. Perhaps that's why Klick is pursued by a whole new breed of groupies in the second spot: Flying kissing lips.

The spots can be seen from September 10 on SF1, 2 and Info plus Zattoo, Wilma and Swiss Video Network. And now also on TSR. There, it's called Klick Clic, but otherwise it's exactly the same. And it also pursues exactly the same goal: to raise KPT's profile even further. This is intended to optimally prepare for a successful sales phase in November, when the basic insurance can be changed.

In parallel, Klick is also used on the Internet by its inventors at Lesch+Frei Zurich. In two banner motifs, he shows rather directly how much money one can save with a supplementary insurance from KPT. The conclusion is the same as in the TV commercials: "Great entertainment with a click."

Responsible at KPT/CPT Insurances, Bern: Reto Egloff (Member of the Executive Board), Maya Burri (Head of Marketing). Responsible at Lesch+Frei Zurich: Thomas Lüber (CD and text), Natasha La Marca (AD), Irene Stutz (consulting), Barbara Meier, Désirée Guzzo (polygraphy). Responsible at Markenfilm: Heinrich Reinacher, Stefan Schorer (TV spots, banner animations), Stig Bergqvist (direction). Realization of the banners: Station. Online media: Serranetga.

Zurich Government Opposes Universal Reception Fees

The Zurich Cantonal Government rejects the partial revision of the Radio and Television Act (RTVG) proposed by the Federal Council. The draft provides that, in the future, everyone will be required to pay a fee, even if they do not own a receiving device.

The reason for the planned system change is that new devices such as smartphones, computers, and tablets can receive radio and TV broadcasts via the Internet. The Federal Council assumes that such devices are used in virtually all Swiss households. The system change sought by the Federal Council is more far-reaching than it appears at first glance, the cantonal government writes in its consultation response published on Thursday. In particular, the draft violates the principles of equal treatment and the polluter-pays principle.

The new levy is a new tax, as it must be paid by every household without exception. However, the cantonal government emphasizes that a constitutional basis for such a tax would first have to be established.

The Questionable «Billag System»

Today, the reception fee payable to Billag for households is approximately 462 francs per year. In the future, the annual amount would decrease to about 400 francs. According to the cantonal government, the «Billag system» costs 57.6 million francs annually. If every household were required to pay, the question would arise as to whether maintaining this system would still be justified. Furthermore, the tax would have to be collected by the state itself. Therefore, a private collection agency would no longer be necessary. (sda)

Axel Springer Switzerland: Thomas Garms becomes a member of the Management Board

Effective September 1, 2012, Thomas Garms will be appointed to the executive board of Axel Springer Switzerland. In this capacity, he will serve as publishing director, overseeing the business media and corporate publishing activities.

Thomas Garms is taking over the business media from Jörg Tobuschat, who was previously responsible for this area on an interim basis alongside the program media. Tobuschat will continue to be responsible for program media as Managing Director and member of the Executive Board. Axel Springer announced this in a media communiqué on Thursday.

Garms has held various positions at Axel Springer in Germany and Switzerland since 2001. Among other things, he was editor-in-chief of Welt am Sonntag and Hörzu. He has been working for Axel Springer in Switzerland since September 2011, where he set up the Corporate Publishing department, which will continue to be under his responsibility. Thomas Garms, Jörg Tobuschat and Roland Wahrenberger, Publishing Director of the Beobachter Group, will in future manage the operational business of Axel Springer in Switzerland together with COO Marcel Hürlimann.

"Our Swiss business media have developed excellently under the management of Jörg Tobuschat," says Ralph Büchi, Chief International Officer of Axel Springer. Against the background of the increased digitization of business media and increasing activities in corporate publishing, both activities will now be merged into a joint area of responsibility and the management will be expanded. With his experience in journalism and management at Axel Springer, Thomas Garms is ideally suited to drive forward the digitization of the offerings, says Büchi.
