20 Minutes: Online and print editorial offices merged
The editorial staff of the commuter newspaper 20 Minuten and the editorial staff of 20 Minuten Online will be fully merged. The current print editor-in-chief Marco Boselli will take over as editor-in-chief.
The two editorial teams already work closely together and have joint business and entertainment departments as well as joint local editorial teams. In French-speaking Switzerland, the print and online editorial teams were already integrated in 2010 under the leadership of Philippe Favre, and a joint sales organization for German-speaking Switzerland was created in May of this year under the leadership of Marco Gasser. Tamedia wrote this in a statement on Thursday.
Marco Boselli, currently editor-in-chief of the commuter newspaper and the people magazine 20 Minuten Friday, will take over as editor-in-chief of the integrated editorial team in December 2012. Boselli has been editor-in-chief of 20 Minuten in German-speaking Switzerland since 2003. As project manager, he was responsible for the development of the Italian-language edition 20 Minuti, which has been on the market since fall 2011 and is published jointly with Ticino publisher Giacomo Salvioni. He was also instrumental in the launch of the commuter newspaper L'Essentiel, which Tamedia publishes together with its partner Edita SA in Luxembourg, Tamedia added in the release. Prior to his involvement with 20 Minuten, the 47-year-old was managing director of the dating portal Partnerwinner. Marco Boselli participated in the "Sulzberger Executive Leadership Program" at Columbia University in New York in 2010.
Hansi Voigt, Editor-in-Chief of 20 Minuten Online since 2007, will leave the 20 Minuten media group at the end of November 2012. Under Hansi Voigt's leadership, 20 Minuten Online was expanded as a news portal. On his initiative, an editorial office of 20 Minuten Online was opened in Hong Kong to ensure the updating of 20minuten.ch around the clock, 365 days a year, while at the same time giving employees an insight into a new culture, Tamedia added. The 49-year-old former deputy editor-in-chief of the business newspaper Cash also made a significant contribution to the success of the news site's mobile applications, as well as to 20 Minuten Online's position in mobile applications, it said.
Tamedia is also making cuts at the business newspaper Finanz und Wirtschaft. According to SDA, Editor-in-Chief Mark Dittli told the news agency AWP that seven to eight jobs will be cut. There will be layoffs, early retirements and isolated reductions in staff. The publishing house will have to cut 0.5 jobs, the rest will be at the expense of the editorial team. The FuW editorial team currently still has 45 full-time positions. According to SDA, Dittli justifies the measures with the "extremely tough environment" and the low advertising volume.
Syndicom calls for the renunciation of layoffs
What the changes mean for the orientation of the two media cannot yet be estimated, writes Syndicom in a statement on Thursday. However, the announcement is a source of tension for the employees of the two editorial offices. The two parts, which until now have basically worked separately and independently, would simply be merged in the course of the newly imposed convergence in order to save costs. Obviously, there is only room for one boss - but there will also be cuts in the editorial departments, according to the publisher.
Syndicom, as the trade union for media professionals, is concerned about the plans of the publishing house Tamedia, especially with regard to personnel policy. It expects Tamedia not to misuse the convergence of print and online as a cost-cutting project and to do everything possible to prevent job cuts and layoffs, Syndicom writes in its statement. Various editorial teams at Tamedia titles have already been hit and fleeced by cost-cutting programs in recent years, it said. As the largest media publisher in Switzerland and in view of the millions in profits, the company, which operates from Zurich, has a special responsibility to all its staff and to the public.
