Erdmannpeisker: the real stars of the slopes

For the winter season opener at Flumserberg, Erdmannpeisker, in collaboration with Markenfilm and director Alex Kleinberger, is producing a TV commercial that showcases the true stars of the mountains.

The film shows how ambitiously and focused the piste service works to achieve the best possible pistes, the agency said in a press release. Nothing could deter them from their big goal and it is therefore not surprising that many professionals from other large Swiss ski resorts have unofficially named the slopes on Flumserberg as "the best slopes in Switzerland".

With the idea of using the piste groomers or "Pischtnis", as they are known in the scene, as symbolic figures for the good pistes, a superficial adulation of the good pistes on Flumserberg is avoided and the door to authentic storytelling is pushed wide open, the press release continues. The Pischtnis are shown working day and night in the icy cold, doing their job with a great feeling for beautiful curves - it is probably unavoidable that a few women's hearts beat faster, because real stars have groupies, the press release continues.

Responsible at Erdmannpeisker: Gabriel Peisker (CD), Christina Weisser and Patrick Fawer, (AD), Catharina Schütz (project management). Rod puts a power plant in the home for natural gas

The Rod Kommunikation agency has developed a campaign for Erdgas designed to draw homeowners' attention to a new innovation. Electricity can now be generated at home.

According to a press release, natural gas has come up with a surprising new development: electricity-generating heating. This innovation, which makes use of the so-called heat-power coupling, makes it possible to generate part of the electricity in a home in addition to the heat energy.

Thus, a homeowner suddenly owns his own power plant at home. This is also the simple idea on which Rod Kommunikation's campaign for natural gas puts this explanatory and ecological innovation in a nutshell.

The "Meier Power Plant" is intended to convey in a simple way the self-sufficient direction in which the lives of homeowners can move in the future. Whether in ads, banners or as a TV commercial: With the power plant in the Eigenheim one becomes still more autonomous and can at the same time energy really efficiently use. The advertising idea is already showing success, writes the agency: The Swiss Gas Industry Association is pleased with the numerous interested parties that have come forward since the campaign began.

OGG manages Schweizer Bauer independently again

The Ökonomische und Gemeinnützige Gesellschaft des Kantons Bern (OGG) is taking over Espace Media's 49% stake in Schweizer Bauer. This means that the OGG will manage the agricultural newspaper independently again in future.

OGG founded the Schweizer Bauer newspaper in 1846 and sold a minority stake to Espace Media in 1991. The complete takeover by OGG ensures the editorial and economic independence of Schweizer Bauer, as detailed in a press release. The sale has no direct consequences for the 27 employees; the editorial and publishing offices of Schweizer Bauer will remain at their current location in Bern. The financially successful Schweizer Landwirtschaftszeitung is published twice a week on Wednesday and Saturday with a paid circulation of 31,290 copies. According to WEMF circulation statistics, this makes Schweizer Bauer the leading agricultural newspaper in Switzerland.

In 2011, Espace Media decided to part with Schweizer Bauer for strategic reasons. However, a sale of Switzerland's largest agricultural newspaper to media entrepreneur Dominique Hiltbrunner, which was agreed in February 2012, did not materialize.

Havas Worldwide Zurich: New motif for Riposa

The Havas Worldwide agency has created a new ad concept for Riposa's Sfera back support mattress. Floating spheres symbolize a system that is gentle on the back.

The Glarus-based company Riposa relies on technologies that react to every movement in its sleep systems. This not only ensures restful sleep, but also "For a strong back," as the company's claim goes. Havas Worldwide Zurich is now staging the new Sfera back mattress line in a surprisingly light way. Hundreds of spheres of different sizes form a floating cloud. The result is a striking symbol of relaxed sleep, according to a press release. The spheres are not a decoration, but rather have a substantive purpose. After all, the Touchpoint TP ball-spring system is designed to relieve the back much more than conventional mattresses and thus ensures pressure point-free lying.

Blick also introduces paywall

Blick will also introduce a paywall by fall 2013 at the latest, as Marc Walder announced in the *Sonntagszeitung*. The Ringier CEO also holds Google partly responsible for the decline of newspapers and discusses Energy TV.

However, this planned paywall does not mean that Blick.ch will have to pay, says Walder in an interview with Sonntagszeitung editor-in-chief Martin Spieler. 80 percent of the content will continue to be freely available in the future, but payment will have to be made for the remaining, more exclusive content. Walder expects that in the initial phase, around two percent of visitors will pay for the paid articles - that may not be very much, but it is at least an "eminently important step away from the "everything is free" culture". This change would require all Swiss publishers to implement the paywall, Walder said in an interview with Sonntagszeitung. With Tamedia, NNZ and Ringier, this is the case with all major publishers.

The 47-year-old calls the fact that publishers have made their valuable content available free of charge on the Internet a "historical birth defect. After all, the pretzel king doesn't give away his baked goods at train stations in the hope that customers will one day pay for them. The media industry is in the midst of the "most radical upheaval in its history. This is not caused by a lack of quality in newspapers, but by the digitalization of information. According to Walder, a user brings in seven times less than a reader.

"Modern way of theft"

In this context, the Ringier CEO also sees it as important that publishers can defend themselves against the "unfair exploitation of their intellectual content by search engines like Google. Google earns a lot of money at the expense of the media without giving them a share of the profits. Content produced for a lot of money is "stolen" by search engine operators and aggregators in this way, "a modern kind of theft in digital form." Therefore, according to Walder, Google promotes the death of newspapers and consequently harms Swiss democracy ("Only large newspapers and niche publications will survive"). For this reason, the topic of ancillary copyright will be discussed next week in the Association of Swiss Media.

Energy TV only for Swisscom customers

Ringier intends to remain in the TV business - despite the Withdrawal from press TV and Teleclub (Werbewoche.ch reported). The recently announced launch of the Energy TV channel is intended to appeal to a "young, attractive audience". This is an interactive music station that integrates various channels and Energy's events. Walder does not want to disclose the amount of the investment. However, he said the station will be run by Energy Switzerland, in which Ringier holds a 65 percent stake. The remaining 35 percent belongs to the Energy Group in Paris. An exclusive partnership has been concluded with Swisscom for the distribution, so Energy TV will only be receivable by Swisscom TV customers. Rumors about a joint channel with SRG had been "massively exaggerated" by Der Sonntag - however, it was correct that a meeting on this topic had taken place, as SRG had stated in its new strategy that it was open to cooperations with private companies.

Last but not least: take and give

Swiss media outlets want to make Google pay up. Exactly why this is the case still seems unclear to the general public. Especially since the news portals also benefit from Google—in many ways.

Ringier CEO Marc Walder is not the only one who seems taken with the idea of taking a slice of Google's profit pie - after all, the search engine provider is practicing "a modern kind of theft in digital form" (Werbewoche.ch reported). Sonntagszeitung editor-in-chief Martin Spieler also writes in his editorial that freedom on the internet takes on a different meaning "when companies like Google claim it for themselves in order to earn billions at the expense of others".

That sounds really dramatic at first glance. Even if it is not entirely clear where exactly the problem lies. Although Google lists and links online content from newspaper publishers and places the usual advertising, it also brings the portals the important streams of visitors who in turn pay attention to the websites' advertising. Anyone who does not want to be tracked by Google can prevent this. But nobody does, because who wants to miss out on the numerous visitors and leave the topicality and attention field to the competition?

So you might think that the relationship between Google and the news sites is based on a mutual give and take. No wonder, then, that the search engine giant sees no urgent need to change this (Werbewoche.ch reported). Perhaps the Swiss Media Association should send Blick.ch into the race more often in its attempts to negotiate. The site appears to have a constructive relationship with Google. The permission to download Google's YouTube videos, add its own watermark to them and then play them embedded in its own advertising on its own video portal is impressive. This is because Google cedes advertising sovereignty to the news site and does not even require a link to the original source in return. Meanwhile, less privileged online portals embed the videos with the code provided for this purpose. An uninformed rogue who... Perhaps Google is not such an evil digital data thief after all, as Mr. Walder claims. (hae)

Food industry can advertise with positive health effects

In Switzerland, over 200 advertising slogans that promise a health-promoting effect will be permitted for food in future. The Federal Council has adapted the corresponding list to that of the EU. In some cases, the requirements have been lowered as a result.

Today, health claims are permitted in around 30 cases. The Federal Council is now expanding this list to over 200 entries, as announced by the Federal Office of Public Health FOPH on Friday. In order to make a so-called "health claim", the effect must have been proven. With a "health claim", a manufacturer can advertise a product containing vitamin C, for example, with the promise that the product helps to reduce tiredness and fatigue. For each "claim", the federal government specifies which requirements the product must fulfill.

Claims about the effects of vitamin C are permitted if a product contains at least 15 percent of the recommended daily intake of the nutrient. Today, 30 percent is required. By aligning with the EU, Switzerland is accepting that the requirements will be lowered in some cases. However, according to the FOPH, the lower specification means that more fruit can carry a "health claim".

Harmonization with the EU is a priority for the FOPH. "The consumer should be sure that 'health claims' are the same in Switzerland and in the EU," said FOPH Director Pascal Strupler to the media in Bern.

No remedies

Switzerland is therefore largely following the EU regulations that were issued last May. The Federal Council has not followed the EU in the case of products that are considered therapeutic products in Switzerland and not foodstuffs. In some cases, Switzerland is also implementing changes that the EU has already adopted. These include, for example, permissible claims on products that reduce the risk of illness or that are intended for children.

The regulation should also mean that more foodstuffs can be imported into Switzerland from the EU. Due to the lack of harmonization, the FOPH rejected numerous applications under the "Cassis de Dijon" principle, for example, because they were advertised with "health claims". (SDA)

New journalist accreditations to the Federal Palace

The Federal Council is revising the rules governing journalists' access to the Parliament building and media center in Bern. Following criticism of the previous regulations by the Federal Administrative Court, the government adopted a new accreditation ordinance on Wednesday.

The ordinance originates from the Federal Chancellery. It excludes accreditation for persons who carry out association work or PR and advertising activities. However, this restriction did not stand up to the Federal Administrative Court in July 2011. The court had to rule on the case of an editor of an association organ who had been refused accreditation by the Federal Chancellery.

The court demanded that the Federal Council issue the regulations. The Federal Council has now done so, as announced by the Federal Chancellery. The ordinance will enter into force on January 1, 2013. In future, a permanent accreditation as a journalist will only be granted to those who cover at least 60 percent of events in the Federal Palace in a medium that is accessible to a wide audience. As a further innovation, the Federal Chancellery will publish a list of media professionals on the Internet. (SDA)
