The new Tele Bärn editor-in-chief has almost 30 years of journalistic experience: After completing his studies in theology, Werner De Schepper entered journalism in 1984 at the then Solothurner Nachrichten, according to a statement. In the course of his long journalistic career, De Schepper was editor-in-chief of Blick from 2003 to 2007, among other positions. Since 2009, he has served as deputy editor-in-chief of AZ Aargauer Zeitung. The 47-year-old Werner De Schepper is married, has two children and lives in Olten. In his new role as Editor-in-Chief of Tele Bärn, he will report to Marc Friedli, who as Program Director of TeleBärn and Tele M1 has overall programming responsibility for the two stations.

"Northwestern Switzerland" expands convergence

«Die Nordwestschweiz» is expanding its collaboration across print, mobile, and online platforms. The section editors are now responsible for content across mobile, online, and print—across all channels.

The "sheet makers" have become "daily managers" for the usage peaks at 7 a.m., 11 a.m., 4 p.m. and 9:30 p.m. and for the print edition, according to AZ Medien on Tuesday. They are assisted by the online and news specialists, who write the articles, enrich them with images and videos, weight them and link them on the social media platforms. Particular importance is attached to interactivity with readers and users. The entire editorial team works according to the "online first" principle. Editorial planning has been strengthened with the introduction of the Desk-Net planning system. The newsroom network comprises 16 locations with the main site in Aarau and additional newsroom hubs in Baden, Basel, Solothurn and Dietikon. In the coming weeks, Aarau will undergo a redesign and the introduction of live monitoring to bring it even more closely into line with digital usage requirements. The regional TV stations are also involved in the realignment, although they will remain editorially independent.

The changeover followed a project and training phase of around one year. The editorial base was heavily involved in the process. In so-called "Future Groups," the editorial staff was trained in cooperation with the MAZ (Media Training Center) and prepared for multimedia work.

The aim of the reorganization is to present readers and users of the various print, mobile and online offerings of "Nordwestschweiz" with an even more comprehensive and up-to-date offering. The reorganization also lays the foundation for an online payment barrier, which will be introduced in 2013.

Growing media consumption does little to help media companies

Media consumers will increasingly switch from traditional to digital media in the next five years. For providers of journalistic media content, however, the outlook remains mixed. This is shown by an expert survey conducted by Publicom.

The massive increase in mobile media use will mean that the Swiss population will spend more time on media use in five years than today. The majority of the media experts united in the Delphinarium are convinced that the increasing mobile availability of media content will greatly change usage behavior. Consumption of classic media is also expected to shift increasingly to mobile digital channels.

Google, Facebook & Co as profiteers

However, this threatens to put even more pressure on the business model of traditional media companies. The big beneficiaries of this development will be the operators of search engines and social media, not providers of journalistic content. Their information portals are expected to become more profitable in the next five years, but the economic future looks bleak for most print media. Only the special-interest magazines will escape unscathed. Subscription newspapers and the tabloids, on the other hand, will fare badly. The dolphinarium's forecast for radio and television is somewhat better, but these media types will also hardly be able to profit from the usage trends.

Publicom, a company specializing in media research and consulting, regularly publishes the results of a survey of experts under the name Delphinarium. The panel includes more than forty experts from leading media companies as well as representatives from advertising, media journalism, communications science and corporate communications.

Tariff set for time-shifted television

The collecting societies have reached an agreement with user associations on a tariff for time-shifted viewing of television programs. The new tariff will take effect in early 2013—provided the decision is not appealed to the Federal Administrative Court.

At a meeting with the Arbitration Commission, the two parties agreed on a tariff for so-called "catch-up TV", as announced by the Federal Arbitration Commission for the Exploitation of Copyrights and Neighboring Rights (ESchK) on Monday. Following the decision of the Arbitration Commission, the collecting societies are authorized to claim the compensation provided for in the tariff from the service providers.

For its part, the ESchK had previously come to the conclusion that time-shifted television constitutes a use subject to tariff regulation. However, the collecting societies previously wanted to limit the tariff they had submitted to the recording of broadcasts with a set-top box. According to the ESchK, they were of the opinion that the rights required for time-shifted television should be obtained directly from the rights holders. User and collecting societies have now reached an agreement, in particular on the duration of the retention period for copies and on how to deal with advertising. "This means that nothing stands in the way of a swift approval of the tariff by the Arbitration Commission", the latter writes in the communiqué.

No impact on customers

With the decision of the Arbitration Commission, time-shifted viewing of television programs will be possible to a similar extent as it is today. At present, various companies such as UPC Cablecom and Swisscom offer their customers the option of watching TV programs they have missed at a later date. This involves the TV programs being duplicated centrally on a service provider's storage medium at the customer's request. (SDA)

4+ now also on Swisscom TV

Switzerland's newest private broadcaster, 4+, will be available on Swisscom TV starting December 3. At the same time, 3+ will now be available in HD.

4+ was launched on October 9, 2012 on UPC Cablecom and other cable network providers. From December 3, the channel will also be distributed via Swisscom TV. At the same time, 3+ is now also available in high definition quality.

The young Swiss TV station took the step into the HD age in the summer and renewed its entire broadcasting technology. At the same time, Switzerland's largest private broadcaster also produced its commercials, sign elements and in-house productions such as Bauer, ledig, sucht... or Der Ba-chelor completely new in HD, according to a statement. The HD technology has a four times higher picture resolution than conventional television. This leads to improved detail and tightened color depth, which makes watching shows even more enjoyable.

Last but not least: yellow blasphemers

The Turkish Radio and Television Supreme Council (RTÜK) doesn't find *The Simpsons* funny. This is now costing one TV station (relatively) dearly.

The TV channel CNBC-E has been fined the equivalent of 28,000 francs for alleged blasphemy in the animated series "The Simpsons". In the Halloween special episode of the 22nd season, God was portrayed as a coffee-serving subject of the devil, which the broadcasting authority believes offends religious feelings. According to Spiegel.de, RTÜK also justified the punishment by stating that the series "makes fun of God, incites young people to violence by portraying murders as a divine command and incites them to drink alcohol on New Year's Eve". One of the series characters abuses the religion of the other to incite him to murder. "In one scene, the Bible is publicly burned and God and Satan are depicted in human form," added the supervisory authority.

It's fascinating how much you can read into the series. You could also simply say: it's funny, used to be very funny, then became a little less funny at one point and then caught up again in the more recent seasons. That doesn't mean you have to drink alcohol on New Year's Eve. (hae)

SDV Award: On your marks, get set, submit!

The medals have been polished, the winners' podiums have been set up, and the final stretch is just around the corner: In 2013, competitive marketing professionals will compete in 16 different disciplines at the Dialog Marketing Games. The deadline for entries is the end of January.

When the Dialog Marketing Games 2013 are ceremoniously opened at the beginning of December, the Swiss marketing scene will present its best dialog marketing ideas, measures and campaigns of the past year. Under the motto "The Dialogue Marketing Games", the submitted campaigns will face the 21 judges of this year's jury, chaired by Dr. Christian Huldi, Chairman of the Jury.

Submit before it's too late

Anyone who wants to receive gold, silver or bronze in one of this year's sharpened dialog marketing categories in the glow of the brightly blazing competition fire should submit their successful dialog marketing campaigns by January 31, 2013. According to the press release, the categories represent the broad range of dialog marketing channels and reflect the diversity of the industry.

Exciting games are guaranteed

The six classic dialogue marketing disciplines alone will provide plenty of excitement, i.e. when creative advertisers compete in the categories "Mailings B2C (2D) up to 100,000 copies", "Mailings B2C (2D) under 100,000 copies", "Mailings B2C (3D)", "Mailings B2B (2D)", "Mailings B2B (2D)" and "Printed, non-personalized measures". There will also be plenty of excitement in the "Integrated Dialogue Campaigns" and "Ambient Measures" categories, as well as in the new "Customer Loyalty" category, which was created at the request of many athletes.

Almost a digital Quadrathlon

In order to enable an even better evaluation of the individual achievements in the large digital impact area, the organizing committee of the Games has now divided the digital measures into four categories. In 2013, successful dialog marketing campaigns will be awarded for the first time in the digital categories "E-mails", "Landing page/microsite", "Mobile marketing" and "Social media".

Craftsmanship has golden soil

And possibly brings an award in gold, silver or bronze: response-triggering measures and campaigns are honored in this category in the disciplines "Art Direction", "Production" and "Text". However, these measures must always have the primary goal of triggering measurable reactions and/or dialog with or within the target group.

Proven products also remain in the race

In addition to all of these categories, submitted work can be recognized with the special prizes "D-A-CH/International", "Campaigns for Non-Profit Organizations" and the "Platinum Prize" (Best of Show) sponsored by Swiss Post. The "SDV Junior Award" will continue to serve as a springboard for the industry's young talents in the coming year. Last year's winning entry in this category will be implemented this year under the motto "The Dialog Marketing Games". And: a competition entry can be submitted in several categories and win a maximum of two awards.

The price is hot

Advertising agencies, service companies and advertising clients who would like to submit their work for the SDV Award can find Sdv-award.ch everything you need to participate and the necessary documents. The winners will be honored at the Award Night on June 14, 2013 in Zurich. Renowned advertisers, marketing experts and clients will act as accredited judges in all disciplines. Officials of the SDV partner associations ASW, BSW, SW Schweizer Werbung, SMC, Swissfundraising and VSV traditionally benefit from reduced entry fees. The deadline for entries is January 31, 2013.
