Cloudy with a view of clementines

BBDO Russia is campaigning against food waste for the furniture store Ikea - and took inspiration for the campaign from an animated film.

It has now been eleven years since the animated film "Cloudy with a Chance of Meatballs" was released. In it, the protagonist develops a device that turns water into food. Due to a small mishap, the machine flies into the clouds, whereupon it starts raining food. An idea that - if implemented correctly and responsibly - could actually solve the still very big problem of world hunger.

Sadly, in stark contrast to the food shortage in developing countries, immense food waste is also one of the world's major problems. According to studies, around a third of the food produced worldwide is thrown away. Ikea picks up on this in its current Christmas campaign: A boy has to flee home because suddenly - as in the animated film - huge amounts of food fall from the sky. The idea is to visualize what it would be like if nature gave us back everything we throw away. Especially during the festive season, with all the food, it is important to utilize the leftovers as much as possible. Until then, they should be stored properly - for example in storage boxes from Ikea.

Good fake is bad buy

With a generous dose of cynicism, Omnicom Sweden and the Swedish Patent Office highlight the dangers of counterfeit products.

prv_pro_pollution_print

Every year, the Swedish population buys millions of counterfeit goods. Products made under poor working conditions and as cheaply as possible, taking into account neither the environment nor the safety of the consumer.

The Swedish Patent Office PRV aims to generate awareness of this issue and has launched a campaign as part of this year's Black Friday and Christmas shopping. On display is a range of products named after the risk we expose ourselves to when we make a purchase.

Thus, the fake, non-UV-filtered sunglasses are called "Go Blind," the poorly made teddy bear "Mr. Suffocate," the non-clinically tested medicine "Poisonax," the would-be premium sneaker "Pro Pollution," the fake perfume "Réaction Allergique," and the cheap hair straightener "Scalpburner 2000. A campaign that makes you smile and think at the same time.

Snoop Dogg and Sodastream enjoy the little things

For this year's Christmas campaign, Sodastream has enlisted «The Doggfather,» Snoop Dogg. The message: Enjoy the small, meaningful things in life.

Snoop-Dogg-&-SodaStream---The-small-things

The spot, produced in-house, tells with a wink how even the small things can bring great joy in the context of the holidays. With the support of a sea turtle, the rapper also conveys Sodastream's environmental message, because small changes in behavior can already make a big contribution to environmental protection.

The spot was realized by Alon Seifert and director Jake Szymanski. (pd/swi)

A contemplative acid test

Creepy but funny: Kitchen towel manufacturer Plenty and BBDO UK kick off the festive season with a Christmas commercial that leaves no stone unturned when it comes to nerve-wracking moments.

Plenty-#Xmess-1-11-screenshot

Hand on heart, Christmas gatherings with family can be a challenge on the nerves. Annoying aunts, incontinent, greedy pets, leaky toddlers and cooking mishaps are just a few of the things that can make it really hard to feel joy at the gathering.

Although a more or less big chaos does not exactly embellish a Christmas, in the end it is somehow part of the family feeling. As Plenty says, "Christmas is always a mess, but it's our mess and there's no place we'd rather be right now." Because love is stronger than spilled gravy, dropped turkey or baby vomit - and so is Plenty. With this statement, the household paper manufacturer forgoes the (direct) inclusion of any Corona-related themes and focuses entirely on the essentials: Christmas in the family, no matter what.

Which campaign from the past twelve months are you particularly proud of?

To all of them, of course. But we are especially happy about the collaboration with Coop that started this year and our first work "Tatendrang" for the sustainability engagement "Taten statt Worte". Or the "Home-made damage sketch" for Mobiliar during the Corona lockdown or the youth activation "Moving Box Furniture".

The most important campaign in agency history to date - and why?

We have realized many cult campaigns over the years, such as Gian & Giachen, the Migros chicken or the Grillitarians. Even more than past successes, we are interested in future work. Our guiding principle "We remain unsatisfied" also applies here.

The most offbeat place your creatives retreat to be creative?

Retreat alone is often too little for truly inspiring ideas. It also requires collision, i.e. the meeting of different skills, views and influences. That's why collaboration within the team - and with the customer - is so important to us. The most unusual place for killer ideas is a meeting room.

What do you do when you have thought blocks?

A thought block is a call to relax or change the setting. That means: change the place, change the method, change the topic. Or simply get out into the fresh air.

When it gets too loud: A Pamir as a mobile think tank.

What is your agency philosophy?

We inspire people and brands.

Why should talented people definitely come to work for you?

We focus on the long-term development of people in a creative ecosystem and are convinced that young people can and should take on responsibility quickly. That's why we launched the Future Creative Leaders trainee program. As part of the program, young talents learn about all aspects of the creative industry and get a feel for whether they would rather pursue a professional or management career.

How long do employees stay with you on average?

On average, it is currently just under three years. We also have many returnees who are already with Jung von Matt for the second or third time.

How old is your youngest employee, and how old is your oldest?

Diversity is also very important to us in terms of age. That's why we have everything from baby boomers to Gen Z with us.

How high are the wages you pay compared to the industry average?

According to the LSA wage survey, the agency as a whole is slightly above the industry average.

What is the ratio between the best and the worst paid employee?

A trainee starts with us at 2500 francs a month. Depending on the degree of co-entrepreneurship, the salary varies greatly upwards. The median salary of a full-time employee in 2019 was 7500 francs.

Do employees know among themselves who earns how much?

No. However, our experience levels are fully transparent. Because salaries are based on the levels, there is a certain implicit transparency.

How much overtime do you work on average per week?

On average, zero per week across all employees. Individuals also perform more time and again. Supervisors are called upon to ensure that this is compensated for in a meaningful way.

What benefits do you offer to compensate your employees for this overtime?

We attach great importance to the personal and professional development of all employees. In addition to individual or role-specific training, our internal further education program "School of Excellence" focuses on joint further development in the area of team building and specialist expertise.

Lots of love from the home office.

How long do you get maternity leave and how long paternity leave?

In the case of maternity leave, Jung von Matt offers 16 weeks at 100 percent pay. As of 2021, fathers will receive four weeks' paternity leave with 100 percent pay.

Is home office allowed - and if so, how often?

Yes, "work from anywhere" applies at our company. Employees can decide where they work at any time. The home office quota varies greatly from employee to employee and depends on roles and project phases. The occupancy rate in the agency is currently around 40 percent.

What is the current quota of women?

Currently, it is 48 percent across all employees in all agency sectors. However, it is significantly lower for managerial functions. We are working on this.

Do you employ interns?

Yes, among other things as part of the "Future Creative Leaders" trainee program. The goal: to get to know all areas of a creative agency and then decide where the development should go.

Do you organize team events?

Yes, in the individual teams, but also across the agency. Ski weekends, checkup days and Christmas parties are legendary. This year, because of Corona, we have reinterpreted many events and looked for formats that are both feasible and inspiring. We believe that corporate culture must be lived even in times of increasing spatial separation, perhaps even more than ever. That's why we also invested a lot during the lockdown to create shared experiences.

The legendary JvM Christmas party.

Do you have an agency dog or other mascot?

We have several dogs that come in and out of the agency. But our heraldic animal is still the Trojan horse.

Where do you drink your after-work beer?

In the "Rössli", our agency's own pub, on the roof terrace on Wolfbachstrasse or in the "Kantine" on Weberstrasse. Or somewhere outside in a great pub.

The blackest black

Vmly&r Peru avoids common advertising clichés for Bolivar laundry detergents and demonstrates their effectiveness not on the clothes, but on the shadows.

print-bolivar_peru_vmlyr_03_source

All detergents actually promise the same thing: Color detergents bring back the original color, delicates detergents protect and even repair the structure, whites detergents restore radiant whiteness - and black detergents ensure that clothes do not turn gray.

In the typical detergent advertising cliché, these claims are staged in promising before-and-after comparisons. Washboard-bellied models hold the clothes in question, which look suspiciously like "freshly bought", up to the camera - and happily put them on themselves afterwards.

For the promotion of Bolivar's "Color and Black" detergent, the Peruvian agency Vmly&r chooses a somewhat more discreet approach. Although the promise is the same - black clothing becomes even more intensely black - the visual implementation is both simple and clever: even in the shadows, the black stands out even more.

BVG wishes B(e)iden the election victory

With its latest campaign, the Berlin Public Transport Authority (BVG) has once again scored a creative home run.

The US elections have been going on since Tuesday night. Donald Trump and Joe Biden are in a neck-and-neck race, and as of early Thursday evening everything is still open - and both parties are confident of victory.

The whole world is rooting for the winner, and many are publicly sharing their opinions on social media about who should win. The Berliner Verkehrsbetriebe (Berlin public transport company) doesn't miss the opportunity to put in its two cents. Although - as is first made clear - as a public company they are not allowed to take sides, a clever "graphic slip" quickly makes it clear which party they are positively inclined towards.

The last name of the Democratic presidential candidate generally holds enormous potential for puns, as shown by a tweet - unfortunately not real - that appeared on the meme platform 9gag. With this in mind: Bi den and until next time.

Burger King urges customers to order from competitors

France has been in its second lockdown since Friday. Burger King is showing solidarity with its competitors and urging its customers: Order from McDonald’s!

BK_ANNOUNCE_EN

Once again, the French are only allowed to leave the house to do necessary shopping or to visit the doctor. For many industries, this is tantamount to an occupational ban - and the catering industry is also heavily affected by these measures.

In these times, the focus should not be on competition, but on showing solidarity and providing support. This is also how Burger King France sees it. In collaboration with its lead agency Buzzman, the fast-food chain has launched a print and social media appeal to support not only its own business, but also that of all other restaurants - whether fast or slow food. Consumers should order food for all it's worth. Burger King even admits that a Big Mac is not a bad choice.

Life as a puzzle

If only it were that simple: McCann shows what a life made of puzzle pieces looks like for Ebay.

Puzzleteilen

Suppose every everyday object around us were a puzzle piece that had its fixed place. Many decisions would thus be taken away from us. If a puzzle piece doesn't fit? Get rid of it.

And Ebay already has the answer to the question "Where to put it? Because, as we all know, you can buy and sell almost anything on the platform. And perhaps the long sought-after puzzle piece can finally be found there.

Listen to your inner meerkat

On behalf of Worksafe, FCB New Zealand urges the New Zealand public to follow the example set by these furry four-legged friends.

pelzigen Vierbeinern

Meerkats are extremely sociable and live together in colonies. Since the small predators have many enemies, a good survival strategy is essential for them. Thus, at least one animal always keeps watch and warns the rest of the group in case of imminent danger.

What works well for the meerkats is now to be implemented in the workplace. Although many safety rules are already in place and communicated accordingly, a relatively high number of workplace accidents still occur. Worksafe now wants to counteract this with a campaign that deliberately avoids a generic checklist and clipboard atmosphere.

A film and heroically designed posters are intended to encourage New Zealanders to be attentive and to intervene if something goes wrong at work. After all, if you look out for each other, nothing will stand in the way of self-study in German during the night shift.

Am then times in my imaginary wine cellar

Eye-rolling guaranteed: British online wine retailer Laithwaite’s draws attention to its wide range of products in a way that’s masterfully unfunny.

Weinkeller

No wine cellar available in your own four walls? That's not so bad. If it's up to Laithwaite's, it's easy to imagine one. In a commercial, the online retailer has its customers pretend to descend into a wine cellar behind a piece of furniture, only to emerge with a good drop. The message: "Get that wine cellar feeling with Laithwaite's."

Although the imaginary-staircase move is not funny in real life from about the age of 10 - with the exception of isolated pity laughs (see picture below) - the cinematic realization by the British agency Rapp is very amusing and successful precisely because of the ridiculousness of the plot.
