False start for Slack into the new year

The office communication service Slack was paralyzed for hours on the first workday of the new year due to a glitch. Among other things, users had trouble logging in and sending messages.

slack-unsplash

Connections to calendar apps and other applications also did not work. The outage affected Slack users in the U.S., Europe, Japan, Brazil and other countries. The service was back up and running largely uninterrupted on Tuesday.

The outage began on Monday afternoon European time - when the working day started in many places in the USA. The causes of the disruption, which lasted around four hours, remained unclear on Tuesday. However, experts expect the company to comment in detail on the breakdown at the start of the 2021 working year.

Transparent communication

Slack had been very transparent about its outages in the past compared to other tech companies. In May, the company published a detailed blog post about server scaling issues that had led to a major disruption of the service.

The outage, which was fixed the same day, was at least partially related to the surge in Slack server usage. Since the outbreak of the Corona pandemic, many employees have been working from home and relying more on office communication services like Slack.

Unfavorable time

For Slack, the problems are additionally inconvenient, as the company is currently in sales talks. Enterprise software giant Salesforce is looking to cost around $28 billion for the acquisition announced in December (Werbewoche.ch reported).

Slack faces stiff competition from Microsoft. With Microsoft Teams, the software giant offers a powerful alternative to Slack, but also to video conferencing offerings like Zoom. (SDA)

Web appearance for gravel: Rosarot lets drone fly over pit

The company Kies in Glattfelden is presenting its new website as a «dynamic interplay between people, machines, and the essential building materials—gravel and concrete.» The rebranding and the completely new brand identity were developed by the agency Rosarot, which flew a drone over the gravel pit for the project.

The Zelgli gravel pit from a drone perspective.

For more than 45 years, the Kies company in Glattfelden has been removing gravel from the Zelgli pit in a wide variety of shapes and quantities. Since 2010, it has also been producing concrete, which, like all its products, is delivered by its own fleet of trucks.

The building materials specialists have commissioned the Zurich agency Rosarot to show this also in communication in a fresh and modern look.

The design was preceded by a careful analysis of user behavior. Therefore, for the new website Gravel-ag-glattfelden.ch The company has opted for a lean structure that reduces all content to the essentials, but presents them in a clearer and more eye-catching way. In the newly designed logo, a bar and a dot, which stand for concrete and gravel, form an exclamation mark as a clear commitment to the company's own expertise.

In addition to modern machines and vehicles, the new imagery also shows employees in action. Bernese photographer Rob Lewis was hired for the shoot in the gravel plant and the video shoot by drone. The appearance is completed by the redesign of the brochures and stationery as well as all signage.

Responsible for gravel: Daniel Schnellmann (Management). Responsible at Rosarot: René Karrer (Creative Direction); Andreas Steiner (Consulting); Sarah Därendinger (Art Direction); Stephanie Steimer (Graphics, DTP); Flavia Hänni (DTP); Thorsten Hainke (Senior Text); Caro Etter (Digital Manager). Responsible at Rob Lewis Photography: Rob Lewis (photographer).

Exceptional year, exceptional category

New and only this year there is the category "Corona" with the subcategories "Creativity & Corona" and "Cancelled due to Corona". The coronavirus is presenting the world with immense challenges, including the advertising and communications world. For example, when special campaigns were implemented overnight, sometimes under the most difficult conditions. With the sub-category "Creativity & Corona", ADC Switzerland would like to recognize such extraordinary achievements: Entries can be submitted from all categories that are related to corona (employee thanks, encouragement campaign, prevention, etc.). The focus is on strategy and idea - in the knowledge that the quality of execution often had to be subordinated to the urgency and production conditions.

Numerous campaigns that have already been produced have unfortunately never seen the light of day due to corona. Among them are certainly works that do not deserve to be forgotten in the darkness of waste bins. The ADC would like to give them the chance to be recognized with the subcategory "Cancelled due to Corona": Works from all categories that were already produced but could not be published due to coronavirus can be submitted.

The Call for Entries is now available here can be downloaded.

Consumers want to stay fit despite lockdown

The topics of health and well-being gained in importance during the Covid 19 crisis. However, GfK data show that this trend had already become increasingly prominent among European consumers before the outbreak of the pandemic.

consumer-wearable-unsplash

Consumers in Europe currently want one thing above all else: to stay physically and mentally healthy. According to data from GfK, a healthy lifestyle had already become an important part of their daily habits for around 50 percent at the start of the Covid 19 pandemic.

"The latest data from our GfK Consumer Life survey confirms this trend," explains GfK expert Anja Reimer. "Forty-six percent of Europeans say that both prevention and treatment are top priorities for them when it comes to looking after their own well-being. Relatively few consumers say they focus exclusively on 'treatment' or that neither is important." In Spain in particular, respondents favor the "prevention only" approach, while it is less favored in Belgium, France and Russia than in other European countries.

Smart health products are on the rise

Checking vital signs regularly at home has become part of a healthy lifestyle for consumers. Demand for blood pressure monitors has increased year-on-year in all European countries monitored over the past ten months. In Switzerland, with growth of around 12 percent. With the desire for prevention, smart health products have also gained in importance. For example, more than half of consumers are interested in devices that can measure vital signs and share them with their doctor or family. Italian consumers in particular would consider buying such devices. In Germany and the Netherlands, people are more hesitant about sharing health data.

Spanish consumers most active across Europe

A healthy lifestyle helps prevent certain diseases. According to the GfK Consumer Life Study 2020, fitness and sports activities have generally increased over the past five years: 38 percent of European consumers say they exercise regularly to stay fit. 60 percent try to exercise at least once a week - both figures have increased by 4 percentage points since 2015. Spanish consumers are more active in sports than people in Germany, Austria, France and Switzerland, although weekly exercise is also considered important in these countries.

"Despite the lockdown or the current restrictions, consumers want to stay fit. In the spring, a third of Swiss people went for a walk more often and a quarter did more sports," explains Anja Reimer. "In November, it was slightly less, but still just under a third go for a walk more often and just under 20 percent of respondents do more sports."

Thanks to this ongoing trend, demand for technology-based fitness accessories has risen significantly. According to GfK Point-of-Sales data, purchases of wearables, i.e. smartwatches and fitness trackers, increased by 22 percent in Europe last year. This trend is evident in all European markets observed, but particularly in Poland, the UK, Scandinavia and the Netherlands. In Switzerland, growth of around 7 percent is evident. Only in Spain have sales of wearables declined in recent months. The fact that consumers are taking a more holistic approach to health is evident from the increased sales of wearables with sleep monitoring functions.

Healthy work-life balance is important for consumers

In a Why2buy survey by GfK, two-thirds of European consumers said they strive for "inner" health. For many, mental balance is even more important than improving physical health. It is therefore not surprising that currently 40 percent of European consumers make a point of regularly caring for and pampering themselves. In Switzerland, 43 percent say that being in good physical and mental condition is a concern for them.

A healthy work-life balance is also part of a balanced lifestyle. This is important to almost half of European consumers. The need has increased by 9 percent across Europe in the past five years. Germany, Italy, Spain, Russia and Switzerland are leading the way.

Pandemic home office working has led to new challenges in terms of work-life balance. According to a survey on home office work conducted by GfK in Germany, France and the UK, it does lead to reduced travel times, less stress and the ability to take care of some household chores during the day.

On the other hand, one-sixth of employees find it frustrating to have to coordinate their work and leisure time; they feel isolated or obliged to check their e-mail in their free time. Almost two-thirds of the Swiss therefore expect companies to also introduce policies that promote employee well-being.

For the study GfK Consumer Life the data of more than 30,000 consumers in over 25 countries is collected annually. The aim is to provide market-leading companies with detailed information on all aspects of consumers' lives, including their expectations, personal values, future prospects and concerns, as well as their lifestyles and consumption patterns.

GfK regularly collects sales data in the consumer electronics, photography, telecommunications, IT, office equipment and household appliances sectors in over 70 countries worldwide via its retail panels. All figures are based on a fixed euro exchange rate.

GfK consumer panels report consumer goods purchases in 17 countries based on the daily recording of purchases by 118,000 households. Using "Why2buy" surveys in the consumer panels, consumer attitudes are linked to the recorded purchasing behavior, explaining why customers buy. In the Why2buy study on health and well-being, more than 64,000 households in Germany, Austria, Belgium, the Netherlands, Sweden, Denmark, Poland, the Czech Republic, Hungary, Croatia, Serbia, Russia and Slovakia were surveyed on health and well-being.

Graubünden vacations and Nino Schurter enter into partnership

Graubünden Ferien has entered into a partnership with mountain bike world champion and Olympic gold medalist Nino Schurter for the years 2021 through 2023. As part of the «Fairtrail Graubünden» campaign, Schurter will promote fair coexistence on Graubünden’s hiking trails and mountain trails starting in the summer of 2021.

The collaboration was announced on Monday. Nino Schurter will become a testimonial of "Fairtrail Graubünden" through the partnership with Graubünden Ferien. He will appear in a video campaign that is scheduled to run for three years until 2023.

In the videos, Schurter will be seen from summer 2021 in various encounters between bikers, hikers and other mountain walkers. The videos will show that it is possible to live together in the mountains thanks to mutual respect. In Graubünden, an 11,000-kilometer network of trails is open to everyone for sports and leisure.

Schurter's personal concern

"Fairtrail means 'nice, clean and ready'. This corresponds 100 percent to my personal attitude," lets Nino Schurter in a message from Graubünden Ferien. Each and everyone can make a contribution so that encounters in the mountains become a positive experience for everyone, he said. "I'm glad that I can now commit myself to this as a testimonial," Schurter continues.

For Graubünden Ferien, the Grisons mountain bike pro is the ideal ambassador to express the Fairtrail attitude. "Nino Schurter is at home in the mountains and is there even without a bike. Together with him, we can raise awareness even more strongly for the peaceful coexistence of everyone who uses the wide network of trails in the mountains for sports and leisure," says Graubünden Ferien CEO Martin Vincenz with conviction.

Part of a cantonal project

The videos with Nino Schurter as testimonial are part of the cantonal project "Fairtrail Graubünden 2021-2023", which has been approved by the Graubünden government. In addition to basic work, the project includes the continuation of the Fairtrail campaign, first launched in 2019, which uses various means to promote respect and tolerance in biking and hiking, but also in trail running and other leisure activities.
