Key findings:
- Switzerland, a country of many nano-influencers and a few mega-influencers
- 47 percent of Swiss Instagrammers have up to 5,000 followers and are so-called nano-influencers. Macro (100,000 to 1 million) and mega (over 1 million) influencers are heavily underrepresented at just over 3 percent.
- English - the Swiss national language on Instagram
- 60 percent of Swiss Instagram accounts communicate in English. The official national languages are clearly less present with 23 percent German, 8 percent French and 2 percent Italian.
- Switzerland lives and loves commitment
- Swiss Instagrammers have a much stronger bond with their audience than the global average, with engagement rates (number of likes and comments measured against the size of the following) almost twice as high across the board in this country.
- The engagement rate gap in Switzerland
- At 6.3 percent, German-speaking accounts have a significantly higher engagement rate than French-speaking accounts (4.7 percent).
- Not everything is genuine in Switzerland either
- 66 percent of Swiss Instagram profiles are operated by real people, the rest by bots. However, this is a good figure compared to the global average of 54 percent. 40 percent of Instagrammers here use methods to artificially increase follower numbers and engagement rates. This makes it even more important for companies to select influencers based on data.
The Swiss Influencer Report was co-authored by communications agency Farner and HypeAuditor, a startup that uses artificial intelligence and machine learning to analyze Instagram accounts for authenticity. "We collect publicly available data and analyze where a profile's followers come from, who else they follow, whether their numbers are growing in a pattern, and what kind of interactions are taking place," explains Alexander Frolow, CEO of HypeAuditor. "Using an algorithm, we can determine the authenticity value of each account based on this."
The most credible Instagrammers: comedians and journalists
Credible in this context means that these influencers have achieved the best Audience Quality Scores (AQS). This is a quantitative measure calculated by HypeAuditor for the authenticity of followers, comments, likes and other factors according to which influencers are evaluated. An important difference between HypeAuditor and other influencer lists is the analysis of a much larger group of influencers. While most traditional influencer rankings are "hand-curated" lists that usually focus on the macro-influencers and thus only on the tip of the iceberg, HypeAuditor uses various data sources to approximate the entire Swiss Instagram community.
Six comedians made it into the top 10 Instagram influencers with @uni.gag, @secondmeme, @swissjokers, @schwiizchischte, @jonny_fischer and @dr.schwiz. Meanwhile, @stramandino (Radio Energy Basel), @mona_vetsch (SRF), @nadia.goedhart (Radio Energy Zürich) and @michel_birri (SRF 3) represent the media.

There are credible influencers for every topic
The Farner and HypeAuditor report also includes a ranking of the top 400 Swiss Instagrammers, broken down by thematic focus. Next week, the rankings on these topics will be published:
- Food
- Travel
- Lifestyle, fashion and fitness
- Politics (Even if these are not classic influencers that brands work with, 2019 is an election year in Switzerland - accordingly, it makes sense to take a closer look at the social media activities of Swiss politicians).
Data-based influencer marketing pays off
"Overall, it shows that there are very authentic influencers in Switzerland on various topics. However, it is also a fact that many Swiss accounts operate with fake followers and fake engagement," explains Daniel Jörg, Partner and Head of Digital at Farner Consulting. "For this reason, we use tools like HypeAuditor in our work to make the selection data-based and thus effective."
