NZZ Media Solutions becomes NZZone

NZZone is the name of the NZZ Media Group’s new marketing organization. It focuses on customer-centric campaigns and specializes in vertical service packages in relevant subject areas tailored to specific target audiences. The goal is to give advertisers access to the NZZ brand ecosystem and its platforms.

NZZone

The marketing organization wants to support advertising partners in effectively showcasing their brands with topics and content within the NZZ world. Content marketing and brand advertising are also becoming increasingly important in Switzerland. They help to anchor messages in the public's memory and arouse consumer desire. Traditional campaigns, on the other hand, are fading into the background. Clever collaborations are needed in order to position oneself sustainably.

With this strategy, NZZone is now implementing the transformation of advertising marketing announced last November (Werbewoche.ch reported). With a clear focus that is reflected in the name of the new business unit.

With regard to consulting and sales, Adrian Näf says: "For the time being, nothing will change for our existing and future clients - except that we will make the entire NZZ brand world accessible to them and develop new tools, services and bundles for them," explains Adrian Näf in a press release. This will be done in close cooperation with the company's own partners: NZZ Content Creation for journalistic storytelling, Audienzz for the entire digital advertising market as well as NZZ Conferences and NZZ Live for exclusive events.

Remo Baumeler will be responsible for the strategy of the new business unit as Managing Director and will continue to head the digital advertising specialist Audienzz in the same role.

Even at home everything revolves around good taste

Tête de Moine AOP cheese tastes great at home, too. The creative agency Openroom.ch has adapted a campaign—which was supposed to launch in April—to the new situation surrounding the coronavirus.

The restrictive measures imposed by the federal government also have an impact on the form and content of advertising. In 2019, the entire brand strategy for the client L'Interprofession Tête de Moine was redesigned by Openroom.ch. The primary focus was on communicating various situations relating to snacking in summer. In fact, Tête de Moine in the form of pre-cut rosettes in practical packaging is very popular for parties with friends or company aperitifs. To this end, a spot was produced for social media and TV with the slogan "With us, it's all about good taste". The video shows a group of friends in an urban setting on a roof terrace.

With the Covid-19 pandemic and the health measures taken by the authorities, the #stayhome wave has spread on social networks, making it visible to everyone. The release of this Tête de Moine campaign planned for the beginning of April with a focus on Easter is no longer in line with the current situation. Meeting up with friends and having a good time together is no longer in line with the restrictive measures. The Openroom team suggested adapting the script to the current social situation. The scene now takes place in an apartment, where the original spot originally produced for the campaign can be seen on the TV screen.

This last-minute shoot was completed within a week and will be broadcast on Swiss channels SRF1 and SRF2 as well as TSR1 and TSR2 from March 30, 2020.

Schiller says that they were happy to accept these assignments - mostly from the fields of corporate communications and corporate publishing - but wanted to position themselves more professionally with the founding of the Hellozurich agency. The editorial department and the agency are now more clearly separated. Hellozurich has also expanded its team to include two video specialists and two communications consultants.

Brands lower their ad spend on Facebook due to corona virus

Given the current economic situation, demand for paid ads on Facebook is declining. Socialbakers analyzed how companies' ad spending, CPC (cost per click), and engagement rates on Facebook evolved in the first quarter of 2020.

Facebook

The study shows that the volume of ads and the CPC have fallen. Companies in all regions are now focusing more on organic content than before.

In Western Europe, the CPC was around USD 0.43 in December. By mid-March, the CPC had more than halved to USD 0.20. The situation is similar in North America: in December 2019, the CPC was around USD 0.64; by mid-March, this had almost halved to USD 0.32.

North America recorded the sharpest decline in advertising expenditure: Advertising expenditure fell by almost 50% between December 2019 and mid-March 2020.

Due to social distancing, it is expected that customer interactions with brand profiles on social media will increase in the coming weeks. So far, however, overall engagement has been similar.

"The data reflects what we are currently hearing more and more from companies. They are reducing their advertising budgets due to the current uncertain economic situation," explains Socialbakers CEO Yuval Ben-Itzhak. "However, we believe that in the current situation, customers want to hear from the brands they follow more than ever. With regard to social distancing, companies should be aware that their target group is spending more time than ever in the digital world in order to stay connected, entertained and informed. The current situation therefore also presents companies with opportunities, meaning that cuts to advertising budgets should also be questioned."

East Switzerland Media Prize is discontinued

At its meeting, the Board of Trustees of the Eastern Switzerland Media Prize decided to discontinue the prize and liquidate the foundation. Despite many efforts, it has not been possible to give the prize a solid financial basis.

Ostschweizer Medienpreis

The Eastern Switzerland Media Prize was established in 2000 with the aim of recognizing outstanding journalistic achievements from and about Eastern Switzerland. At that time, the media landscape was still diversified and more varied. The increasing concentration of the industry in recent years and the ongoing economic difficulties of the media houses have led to a new situation, which now also has consequences for the Eastern Switzerland Media Prize.

In recent years, it has become increasingly difficult to find suitable partners and sponsors for the Eastern Switzerland Media Prize, according to a press release issued on Tuesday. Particularly in view of the current extraordinary situation and a possible subsequent recession, this area of activity will become even more difficult: The search for new sponsors and partners is extremely difficult. Furthermore, despite the efforts of individual media companies, it has not been possible to create a broad-based solution within the industry that would have placed the Media Prize on a solid and sustainable footing.

After weighing up possible alternative scenarios and following in-depth discussions, the Board of Trustees therefore decided to discontinue the Eastern Switzerland Media Prize from 2020 and to liquidate the foundation in accordance with the regulations. Due to the difficult situation, there was no sustainable alternative to discontinuing the prize.

Free newspapers require special support from the federal government

In an open letter to the Federal Council, the Association of Swiss Free Newspapers (VSGZ) highlights the existential crisis facing free regional media and calls for special support.

Gratiszeitungen

Free regional media have found themselves in an existentially threatening situation due to the coronavirus crisis after the Federal Council restricted or even suspended the activities of many businesses. The letter published on Tuesday states that those affected will therefore no longer place any advertising.

The two free newspapers Rhone newspaper rz and Schaffhauser Bock have already discontinued their printed editions. Other titles are in an extremely difficult situation, as advertising revenues have fallen by well over 50 percent.

The VSGZ is therefore asking the Federal Council to urgently examine whether further support measures can be taken specifically for media companies. The association proposes that advertisements for the current coronavirus campaign be printed in free newspapers or that special tax deductions be created for advertisers who place advertisements in the printed press. (SDA)

CH Media also plans to introduce short-time working

The Swiss media company CH Media plans to introduce short-time work for its approximately 2,000 employees company-wide starting Wednesday due to the coronavirus pandemic. CH Media expects revenue to drop by more than 30 percent in 2020 compared with the previous year.

CH Media

In April alone, a year-on-year decline in sales of over 30 percent is expected for CH Media and over 50 percent in the advertising market, according to a press release issued on Tuesday. This corresponds to more than CHF 10 million.

The following months are likely to be affected at least as severely. Depending on how the pandemic develops in the second half of the year, CH Media expects sales losses in the mid double-digit million range. Products and services are currently being reviewed and adjusted for their savings potential in all areas of the company.

Slumping advertising market

With its newspapers, advertisers, radio stations, TV stations, events, magazines, online offerings and film distribution, CH Media is heavily exposed to the collapsing advertising market, the company writes. CH Media previously generated almost half of its revenues in the advertising market.

At the same time, the demand for reliable news and information, but also for variety through entertainment offerings, is higher than ever before. Online access to news portals reached record levels. The number of viewers and listeners of TV and radio stations is higher than ever before.

As of April 1, CH Media applies for short-time working for an initial period of three months. CH Media will pay the salaries of employees on short-time working in full for the requested period. They will therefore not suffer any loss of pay.

Following consultation with the management of CH Media, the shareholders will waive payment of the dividend in spring 2020 and convert it into a loan.

According to its own information, CH Media reaches around two million people in German-speaking Switzerland with regional newspapers and online portals, radio and TV stations and magazines.

With a turnover of around 480 million and around 2,000 employees, the media company is one of the largest in the country. CH Media was established in fall 2018 as a joint venture between the NZZ Media Group and AZ Medien.

Short-time working also at TX Group

The TX Group, which among other things owns the newspapers Tages-Anzeiger and The Covenant issues. The company applied for short-time working for practically all units. The collapse in advertising revenue was cited as the reason for this (Werbewoche.ch reported).

In order to reduce the disadvantages for the workforce, the company intends to continue to pay the full wageat least until the end of June. (SDA)
