Zurich: trials with giant screens

On Monday, a trial will begin in the city of Zurich featuring one giant advertising screen each at Escher-Wyss-Platz and Bellevue. Starting in January, a test will follow featuring rotating, illuminated billboard columns, as the Department of Building Construction announced on Thursday.

Advertising will be distributed via the screens for three months. These could also be used for information of general interest, such as cultural events, according to the press release. During the test, ecological and "urban space" aspects will be examined, such as light immissions, energy consumption, impact on the public space and effects on the quality of stay. The population, commuters and visitors will also be surveyed.

Another trial will start in January 2014. Poster light columns will be set up at five locations. According to the press release, data will also be collected and surveys carried out here. The city is carrying out the tests together with two outdoor advertising companies. The costs will be shared. The project with the screens will cost the city 7,000 francs, according to the Department of Buildings. For the two rotating columns, the city pays around CHF 14,000 each for project planning, installation and surveys. The city also receives a share of the revenue. This is expected to amount to CHF 25,920 per column per year from 2014. If the trials prove successful, more of these giant screens and pillars could be installed in the city in future, replacing conventional billboards. (SDA)

Last but not least: Happy Cat Day

August 8 is International Cat Day. Parship.ch has taken up the topic and published a study.

The studies of Swiss dating portals regularly reveal astonishing facts (we remember: Werbewoche.ch/to-good-last-who-would-have-thought-of-this). On the occasion of Cat Day (who doesn't know it...) Parship.ch the survey machinery was fired up again. Unfortunately, the results were ignored by most of the media. Instead, the Dog yawn study on everyone's lips. On CAT DAY! Unheard of! That is why we would like to take this opportunity to point out the most important findings of Parship cat owner research.

A third of singles own a pet. Among women, the proportion of cats is more than twice as high as the proportion of dogs (23% vs. 10%). Men are (...) somewhat more balanced in this respect (ten percent vs. seven percent). The proportion of single pet owners is lowest in Central Switzerland: only 18 percent are confident that they have a furry or cold-nosed partner.

It is true that 44% of all singles like dogs and cats equally. But International Cat Day would not be worthy of its name if 25 percent of the rest did not clearly prefer cats - and only 16 percent preferred dogs. 15 percent don't like anything at all. This warm-hearted species is particularly common in Basel and central Switzerland. Singles from the Central Plateau, Zurich and Bern, on the other hand, score plus points, at least in this respect.

However, things only get really interesting when it comes to the characteristics attributed to the respective pet owners. Here, too, the cat faction is ahead: they are rated as "cuddly" (66%), "caring" (46%) and "affectionate" (49%). "Sporty" (one percent), "dominant" (three percent) and "sexy" (four percent), on the other hand, are not found. The opposite is true for dog owners: although they are rated as "close to nature" (66%) and "active" (46%), the cuddle factor (8%) and tenderness (4%) fall painfully by the wayside. And when it comes to "humor" (three percent) and "sexiness" (one percent), dog lovers are completely lost. A clear victory for cats - happy cat day!

The conclusion is obvious: the image of the pet rubs off on the owner. Parship.ch also comes to this conclusion and headlines: "Pet image rubs off on the owner". Anyone considering getting a stubborn donkey or a fake snake as a pet in the near future should bear this in mind. (hae)

Lampert: World premiere 3D effect

The Lampert printing center in Vaduz is facing up to the challenges of the future with the exclusive world premiere "3D effect". The aim of this printing technology is to generate added value that contributes to more emotion and more success.

This new procedure under the name "3D effect" is suitable for print products of all kinds for private and business purposes, be it invitations, business cards, flyers, menu cards, brochures, packaging, annual reports or image brochures, according to a press release. This finishing is to be used wherever special attention is to be generated or emotions aroused. After conventional printing (offset and digital), the printed sheets are finished on the new machine in a second step. The great thing about it all is that the customer only pays for the material (varnish) that he has on his printed product and thus generates added value. Attention is also paid to the environmental aspect. The process is ozone-free and therefore absolutely environmentally friendly.

Print finishing with 3D effect

In the current difficult economic environment, Lampert wants to continue to set new standards with the 3D effect and set a new trend in print finishing. This world first has impressed both in terms of quality and cost in Liechtenstein and Switzerland and has successfully passed its first tests. The digital 3D effect coating is impressive in its finesse down to the last detail. This finish also generates added value and offers differentiating application options. Another advantage is that the customer can choose how much of the ordered offset/digital print run is to be provided with a 3D effect.

Fourth world premiere

The new print finishing with 3D effect sets a new trend not only for the eye but also for tactile perception, which should contribute to more emotions and more success. It is the fourth world premiere after 1989, 1999 and 2010 and sets new standards in the 32-year history of the Lampert printing center.

Swisscom: No change of course

Following the suicide of CEO Carsten Schloter, Swisscom is sticking to its current course. Interim CEO Urs Schaeppi says the strategy is on the right track.

Despite a dip in profits in the first half of the year, there is nothing that Swisscom needs to change substantially. The first major challenge now is to give Swisscom employees confidence and keep them motivated. In business, the challenge is to maintain the good sales figures, said Schaeppi. However, the downward trend continued in the first half of the year under Schloter's leadership: turnover fell slightly by 0.4 percent to CHF 5.596 billion. Net profit even fell by 9.7 percent to 819 million francs. However, tens of thousands of new customers were acquired, which drove up costs. These would pay off in the future, it said. A successor for Schloter should be found by the end of the year. The 53-year-old from Berne did not answer the question of whether he would like to take over the position himself. (SDA)

Garlands don't make an event

For 20 years, Christian Dür helped shape the events of Zurich’s communications industry, notably with the «Plakandafest.» A photo book offers a glimpse into his work.

Thanks to his unmistakable and imaginative style and attention to detail, his festivals have become popular highlights every year. In the 350-page illustrated book "Von einem, der ausog, die Feste zu feiern", he presents an excerpt of his work in a very personal way. He knows why garlands don't make an event - Dür said in a statement. This book closes a circle. In spring 2013, the owner of Visualix Event terminated its long-standing collaboration with Clear Channel Switzerland "for various reasons".

"Von einem, der ausog, die Feste zu feiern" can be found on Book.ch be ordered.

Facebook revamps the news stream

Facebook has revamped the news feed for users. The posts users see after logging in are now weighted differently. Older stories—such as status updates, photos, or links—from important friends are expected to appear more frequently.

"We wanted to make sure people didn't miss important stories that hadn't made it to the top before but were right below," Facebook engineer Lars Backstrom said on Tuesday. "Instead of just showing the most recent stories, we're showing all the stories that are new to you, even if they're not the freshest."

Backstrom said that there are a total of around 30,000 different signals in the algorithm for the news stream, which are weighted differently. These include how much a user interacts with certain friends - for example by clicking the "Like" button or by sharing and commenting on stories. One new feature, for example, is that stories from friends with whom a user has recently been in contact are now ranked higher. From an average of around 1500 possible stories, the algorithm will show users the most important 300, Facebook explained. (SDA)

Axel Springer with revenue decline in the second quarter

The restructuring of the German media conglomerate Axel Springer is having only a minor impact on the company. Growth in digital media has offset declining revenues in the print sector.

Investments in the realignment of the print business and digitization led to a slight decline in earnings before interest, taxes, depreciation and amortization (EBITDA) of 0.4 percent to 171.6 million euros in the second quarter. Turnover fell by 0.9 percent to 823.7 million euros, as the company announced on Wednesday. Digital media, which includes the online advertising portals Immonet and Seloger as well as the marketing platform Zanox, made the largest contributions to sales and earnings. Analysts had expected weaker figures on average. The Group confirmed its forecasts for the year as a whole. Accordingly, it expects a single-digit percentage decline in earnings. Despite the decline in the second quarter, turnover is expected to continue to grow in the low single-digit percentage range.

Advertising revenue from digital media to compensate for print losses

Digital Media continued to grow and made the highest contributions to the Group's revenues and earnings, as Axel Springer writes in a press release. While Digital Media's share of Group revenues reached around 40 percent, the segment's contribution to Group EBITDA increased to around 45 percent. Thanks to the strong growth of Digital Media, Axel Springer was able to compensate for declining revenues in the print business and achieved consolidated revenues on a par with the same period of the previous year.

According to the press release, the Management Board assumes that declining circulation revenues in the domestic and international print business can be offset by rising advertising revenues in the Digital Media segment. Digital Media is expected to continue to grow both organically and through acquisition effects, while national and international print revenues are expected to decline due to market conditions. Due to increased investments in the accelerated digitization of the Group and significant expenses for structural adjustments in the print business, Axel Springer expects a single-digit percentage decline in EBITDA for 2013 as a whole compared to the prior-year figure.

Sales in the print business still without consequences

The sensational sale of a large part of the print business to the Funke Group did not play a role in the first half of the year. At the turn of the year, Springer is parting with traditional newspapers such as Berliner Morgenpost, Hamburger Abendblatt and Hörzu for around 900 million euros. The deal is part of the company's strategy, which has been concentrating more and more on its wide-ranging online business for years in the face of declining revenues from print products.

Axel Springer publishes the daily newspapers Bild and Die Welt, among others. In Switzerland, the Group publishes the Beobachter magazine, the Handelszeitung and the program guide Tele, among others. (SDA/PD/hae)
