Oh mango tree, oh mango tree

KSP has designed an electronic Christmas card for Myclimate that promotes support for climate protection projects.

The climate protection organization Myclimate has set itself the task of drawing the attention of the Swiss to the threats posed by climate change and offering simple ways in which private individuals and companies can reduce their CO2 emissions.

In line with KSP's ongoing Myclimate campaign "Climate change is also changing Switzerland." Myclimate is sending out the film "Oh Mango Tree" as a mailing to companies and private individuals at Christmas. The karaoke version invites you to sing along to the climate-changed Christmas carol and encourages you to give a gift to the climate this year.

Swiss Media Association: New Director

Verena Vonarburg is to become the new Director of the Swiss Media Association. She will take over from Urs F. Meyer on March 1, 2014.

The 46-year-old journalist currently works as a political and communications consultant at the Furrer Hugi & Partner agency. Previously, the historian worked as a journalist for around 25 years, most recently as a parliamentary correspondent for the Tages-Anzeiger and the Bund. This was announced by the association in a press release on Friday. The Swiss Media Association represents the interests of around 150 publishers and media companies.

New LGK promotes timetable change

To publicize Bernmobil’s new schedule, the agency is launching a campaign that includes a contest. The campaign encourages people to study the new schedule carefully.

The agency designed a competition to promote the topic with a pinch of humor: Anyone who can spot the differences between the old and new timetables - and there aren't many of them - can win one of five Libero travelcards with a bit of luck. The campaign can be seen and heard from the beginning of December on advertisements, hanging boxes, online banners and radio spots in Bern, as the agency announced in a press release on Friday.

Responsible at Bermobil: Monika Scheiwiller (Head of Marketing Communication). Responsible at Neue LGK: André Benker, Hans Tanner (Creative Direction), Peter Rettinghausen (Text), Stephan Wittwer (Art Direction), Nina Geissbühler (Graphics), Claudia Shatri (Consulting).

New office for events

John-Patrick Burlon and Steffen Stoltmann are founding an event agency in Winterthur called «Büro für Ereignisse.» Both entrepreneurs bring decades of event experience to the table.

The recently established agency offers support in the conception and implementation of VIP and gala evenings through to Christmas parties, company anniversaries and employee events. Büro für Ereignisse supports its clients not only in the area of customer, brand and corporate events, but also in the presentation of companies, services and products.

Stoltmann can look back on twelve years of work in the international event industry. The Berliner has built up a network in Switzerland, not least during his time as Country Manager of Daily Deal. Burlon is a trained event manager and has worked for various companies and agencies over the past ten years, including Habegger and Standing Ovation. In 2010, he fulfilled a long-cherished dream and founded his own event agency "Burlon events".

Agencies and clients are optimistic for 2014

The Board of Directors of BSW leading swiss agencies hosted its traditional media breakfast. There were "no major changes" to report in the ranking. Publicis is still at the top. And the future does not look bad.

In order to provide a reliable forecast for 2014, BSW leading swiss agencies - for the first time in collaboration with the Research Center for Customer Insights at the University of St. Gallen - wrote to over 1,200 communication managers in 500 companies as well as all CEOs of BSW agencies and asked them about their expectations for the coming year. The study is to be repeated annually.

Two thirds of all advertising clients expect a generally positive economic trend in 2014. Over 60% of clients stated that turnover had increased in the last five years, and a good half reported slight to strong increases in profits. Only 5-6% complained of a significant slump in turnover and profits.

Nadine Borter, President of the association, also wanted to venture a positive forecast for the future based on the new study. 80 percent of all clients stated that marketing and communication is of great to very great importance and will continue to be in the future. Accordingly, two thirds of all clients plan to maintain or even increase their investment in communication in 2014.

Strong diversification of communication investments

For the first time, the total marketing communication investments of Swiss clients were analyzed according to the individual areas in which the money is spent. Almost a third is spent on traditional advertising, i.e. media such as TV, radio, print (newspapers, magazines), outdoor/posters and cinema, 15 percent on digital communication, 11.6 percent on direct advertising, 8.1 percent on sales promotion, while the areas of strategy consulting and efficiency measurement already account for around 5 percent.

More dialog via digital channels, more efficiency

82% of all advertising clients stated that they intend to invest even more money in online communication in the coming year. Online dialog with customers will continue to gain in importance. At the same time, 85% of clients want to invest the same amount or even more in sales promotion. The study also shows that clients want to see the success of their communication investments even more quickly and directly.

Accordingly, 96% of all clients stated that they would invest the same or more money in efficiency measurement in 2014. Efficiency is apparently everything. In order to achieve even greater communication benefits, 81% of all clients will also make the same or more money available for strategy consulting.

Major challenges for the Swiss advertising industry

Clients are dependent on strong partners. They see the greatest challenge over the next three years in the increasing complexity of channels (72%) and technological developments (65.3%). Coupled with ever shorter decision deadlines (66.6%) and an increasing indifference on the part of the target audience (92%), it will become increasingly difficult to develop good and efficient communication solutions at a reasonable cost.

Optimistic expectations and profit warning on the agency side

The high expectations of clients give cause for optimism on the agency side. For example, it is positive to note that only 15% of all clients intend to reduce their communication investments in the coming year. Accordingly, 68% of all agency bosses expect gross operating income to increase in the coming year. The future expectations of advertising and specialist agencies are even slightly more positive than the average, while media agencies are somewhat more cautious.

However, this does not mean that gross profit is also expected to increase. This is because it has already fallen continuously in recent years and remains under strong pressure, not least as a result of increasingly complex demands on the range of services offered by agencies, combined with the growing requirement to deliver even more cost-effectively in even less time.

Weber Harbeke Partners: Sujets for Löwenbräu-Areal

With its exclusive condominiums on the Löwenbräu site, Weber Harbeke Partners is attracting potential buyers from the Gold Coast to the former industrial area.

Since this summer, the luxurious condominiums, designed by the architectural firms Gigon/Guyer and Atelier WW, have been ready for occupancy on the site of the former Löwenbräu brewery. Most of the apartments have already been sold, but the advertising drum is now being beaten once again for the few vacant apartments. The exclusive apartments at Limmatstrasse 264, in the middle of the former industrial and workers' quarter, are aimed at a clientele that otherwise tends to look for residential property on the Zurichberg or the Gold Coast, according to the press release. Yet Kreis 5 is a very attractive place to live. And you don't even have to do without a view of the lake, at least in the tower apartments.

In various subjects, Weber Harbeke Partners focuses on the advantages of the location, illustrated by CAD views of the apartments and the 20-story residential tower. PSP Swiss Property is the developer behind the project. The advertisements appear in the media NZZ am Sonntag Residence, Seesicht, Bilanz and Woz.

Last but not least: Species-appropriate husbandry

You can learn how cats take proper care of their humans in the guidebook *A Cat’s Guide to Taking Care of Your Human*. For once, no agency had a paw in this heartwarming commercial.

For the commercial, cat litter manufacturer Tidy Cat was able to recruit YouTube star Ze Frank win. The cat whisperer, who has already made videos such as Sad Cat Diary has thrilled millions of viewers, produced the two-minute homage to the house cat himself. A clever choice, as the result is also more than visible from a human perspective (at least in daylight). And we two-legged friends finally know that cats don't give a damn about us. They don't look down on us either. They just... have their very own view of things. So we can continue to live with them with a clear conscience as long as we stick to their rules. (hae)

"The decisive competition in the digital markets has long been taking place beyond content"

The third edition of the TV 2.0 Summit took place on Thursday at the sold-out Kaufleuten in Zurich. Highlights included keynote speeches by Volker Herres (ARD) and Daniel Heaf (BBC Worldwide).

In addition to TV experts from German-speaking countries such as Volker Herres (Program Director Das Erste), Ingrid Deltenre (General Director EBU) or Alexander Mazzara (CEO and Founder Joiz), Daniel Heaf (Chief Digital Officer BBC Worldwide), one of the leading experts in the field of digital strategies and innovation, Daniel Panto (Digital Manager at Endemol), Andreas Briese (Strategic Partner Development Manager at YouTube), Dirk Specht (Head of Business Development Electronic Media at FAZ), Doron Hacmon (Managing Director Products and Online Media Group at Liberty Global) and Arndt C. Groth (CEO Publigroupe), international TV giants will also provide insights into successful business models, strategies and marketing concepts in the future TV business. And Dirk Specht emphasizes: "The decisive competition in the digital markets has long been taking place beyond content: It's about the digitalization of (business) processes. This is a question of technology and business models."

In the sold-out Kaufleuten Klubsaal, interesting and forward-looking statements were made in front of an international audience. Volker Herres observed that Internet usage is increasing, while television usage remains stable. "The internet has not yet taken anything away from television. Nevertheless, television will have to change."
In terms of future trends, Daniel Heaf believes that the ratio of live TV to on-demand usage will change significantly in favor of the latter over the next five or six years. "Today, most people still watch TV in real time. But that will change rapidly. Live TV will continue to dominate usage behavior, but even 25% on-demand would be a spectacular change." And Ingrid Deltenre states: "If you want to have a vibrant media landscape, there is no way around the public service model."

In addition to renowned representatives, young voices and TV concepts were also heard, including Lukas Hotz, CEO and co-founder of Layzapp with the beta launch of their second screen app. The date of next year's edition has already been set: the fourth edition of the TV 2.0 Summit will take place on November 27, 2014.

Media Criticism Switzerland: Philip Kübler New President

Change in leadership at Medienkritik Schweiz: Philip Kübler becomes the new president, succeeding Gottlieb F. Höpli, who will now focus on the association's advisory board.

The general meeting of the association Media Criticism Switzerland has elected four new members to the board: Ruth Halter, Zurich Radio Foundation; Pius Knüsel, Director of the Volkshochschule Zurich; Matthias Künzler, University of Zurich; and Stefan Vannoni, Economiesuisse. The board then elected a new chairman, Philip Kübler. He replaces Gottlieb F. Höpli, who has led the association since its foundation. In the future, he will take care of the advisory board of the association, which is to form alongside the board and support it. The constitution of the advisory board is planned for the coming year.

The new President Philip Kübler is a specialist in media, IT, telecommunications and contract law and in governance and compliance issues for organizations. He is an attorney-at-law and works full-time for Swisscom, first as Chief Legal Officer for many years and currently with responsibility for corporate transactions. Philip Kübler is a lecturer in media law at the University of Zurich and a member of the Federal Media Commission (EMEK), an advisory body to the Federal Council on media policy issues. Until recently, Philip Kübler served for twelve years as a member of the Swiss Press Council, and in parallel was involved in the founding of the association Medienkritik Schweiz and served on its board.

Philip Kübler says of his new task: "Dealing with the media is an important secondary matter for professionals in companies and institutions - but for democracy in Switzerland, the media are a main matter." Medienkritik Schweiz aims to promote understanding of the media and engagement with journalism and its environment. When users, media professionals and numerous associations observe and evaluate media performance, this should be shown on the platforms of Medienkritik Schweiz. "We will continue our thematic events and further develop the website as a platform for media criticism," says Philip Kübler in a statement. No one can be indifferent to what media professionals and editorial offices in Switzerland achieve, how they are positioned and in what legal, political, economic and cultural framework they operate. The association Medienkritik Schweiz would like to make its contribution from an expert and independent point of view. "We do not want to distinguish ourselves by pointed criticism of individual media services, but primarily aggregate the media criticism of others and point out media-critical processes."

People with children surf the Internet more often

Children influence the media usage habits of the adults who live in the same household as them. This finding is based on data from the MA Strategy 2013 study, which was published on Thursday.

The media consumption behavior of adults living in households with children up to the age of 19 differs from that of adults from childless households. The latter go to the movies more often than average. In contrast, respondents living in a household with a child spend more time on the internet than people from adult-only households.

Public radio stations are more popular with the childless

Adults living in households with children listen to private radio stations more often than average. Their consumption of public radio stations, however, is below the Swiss average. In contrast, respondents from childless households listen to more public radio stations than private radio stations. There are hardly any differences with regard to television consumption and reading print media. Whether someone lives in a household with or without children does not seem to have any influence here.

Data basis: MA Strategy 2013 study

The data can be found in the MA Strategy intermedia study by WEMF AG für Werbemedienforschung. The study enables a user comparison between media groups and relevant individual media from the areas of press, television, radio, cinema, teletext, Internet, address directories and outdoor advertising. Advertisers can find out which media categories or mix of categories is best suited to reach their target group. The target group can be defined according to socio-demographic characteristics as well as consumer characteristics. The latest MA Strategy publication is available from Thursday at Wemf.ch ready for download.

Edito + Klartext: Alain Maillard becomes co-editor-in-chief

Alain Maillard will take over from Christian Campiche as Co-Editor-in-Chief of Edito + Klartext, the independent Swiss media magazine, from 2014. He will be responsible for the French-speaking part of Switzerland.

As co-editor-in-chief for the French-speaking part of Switzerland, Christian Campiche has made Edito + Klartext the market leader in media journalism in French-speaking Switzerland. Taking over from Christian Campiche, who will soon retire, was no easy challenge, according to a press release. However, the choice of Alain Maillard has set the course for an equally successful future for the magazine.

Since the founding of "Edito" in 2009 by the journalist organizations Impressum and SSM, Christian Campiche has shaped the French-language edition of the magazine. With his independence and upholding of journalistic values, he always felt responsible only to the readership, which was crucial to the magazine's success. In 2011, the magazine Edito + Klartext was launched, building on its two predecessors, Edito on the one hand and Klartext, Syndicom's magazine, on the other. At the same time, a new supporting association was founded, which now includes all three Swiss journalist organizations, syndicom, SSM and Impressum. The editorial team is made up of journalists from the predecessor media. Christian Campiche skillfully used this change to enrich the magazine by broadening its horizons and diversity of topics.

Alain Maillard, who will take over from Christian Campiche, is well known as a media journalist. For several years, he was in charge of the radio magazine "Médialogues" on Radio Suisse Romande ("La Première"). His journalistic career in the editorial offices of various important newspapers in French-speaking Switzerland and in various departments of RTS make him an intimate connoisseur of the media scene and the journalistic profession. The committee tasked with finding a successor to Christian Campiche was pleasantly surprised by the large number of applications, some of which were highly qualified, according to the press release.
