Element P produces short film about domestic violence

On behalf of the Solothurn Cantonal Police, Element P is producing a four-part film series on the topic of community engagement, as seen from the perspectives of victims, perpetrators, citizens, and the police. The series kicks off with the film «The Shattered Dream,» which addresses domestic violence.

The short film, six and a half minutes long, highlights the police's work, which requires a great deal of tact, and the victim's struggle with herself and the fate of her family.

Element P tested a new approach for the script. Instead of extensive research, the story was developed in a one-day workshop together with around ten specialists from the cantonal police based on authentic cases. By the end of the day, not only was the script and dramaturgy in place, but the most important protagonists had also been cast and the filming locations determined. After two busy days of shooting, the film was ready.

For Andreas Mock, Head of Communications at the Solothurn Cantonal Police, it was an exciting experience: "The timing was sporty. But it allowed us to get to the heart of the matter quickly. The result speaks for itself."

Responsible at Cantonal Police Solothurn: Andreas Mock (Head of Communications). Responsible at Element P: Daniel Reichenbach (producer/cinematographer), Reto Waser (director), Michéle Zweifel (production manager).

To the point: Hops and malt lost

From the series Communication work for beginners: Company XY has entered a new sponsorship concept. Soon the time of the spin assistant of a PR agency strikes. With a polite mail I am made aware of this fact.

Since the eager young man probably thinks that we journalists are not in a position to appreciate this new concept appropriately, he dutifully already suggests some topics and also points out that the new concept is running away via various channels and that various measures are planned. Aha, that's something completely new - groundbreaking, so to speak. He hurriedly points out to me that he would of course be happy to arrange a meeting with the person in charge, Mr. A.Z.. Okay, the young man can't know that I probably know A.Z. better than he does.

The next day, they follow up by phone. It has to be that way, because that's what his checklist says. After the obligatory introduction "Did you receive my mail?", the content of the mail is repeated verbally. So coherent is the boy, you have to give him that. I show interest in the subject and also tell him that I have known Mr. A.Z. for a long time and that I will therefore contact him directly to make an appointment. That was probably clumsy of me, because with that I offended him in his professional honor and he sees his promotion to spin doctor in danger. In order to cheer him up again, I give him the pleasure and tell him that he can make an appointment with A.Z. as a matter of course. He thanks me, but says apologetically that he does not have A.Z.'s appointments, he would get back to me.

After two days, he does the same. The only thing that is unclear is why he does it, because his message is only "Mr. Y from company XY would like to contact me about an appointment with Mr. A.Z.". Well, I'm really glad that the whole appointment process is going so smoothly. I thank the Spin-Assi for his efforts and am about to hang up the phone, but he still has a small request. I would certainly understand that the corporate communications department of company XY would like to have my questions for Mr. A.Z. in advance. Just so. That would simplify everything. That was the end of my patience and I explained to the young man that I was not prepared to deliver my questions in advance to the Corporate Communications people, who would have plenty of time after the interview with A.Z. to fiddle around with the text and knead it as boringly as possible, but in conformity with CC. As far as I was concerned, the story was dead and he should please make sure that all the departments involved were informed, so that no one would e-mail or call again.

That didn't work out then either.

Memories of Christian Buxhofer

The former editor-in-chief of the daily newspaper Bündner Tagblatt, Christian Buxhofer, died unexpectedly on Sunday night at the age of 52. By Hanspeter Lebrument

Christian Buxhofer has played an important role in the media landscape in Graubünden over the last few decades. At the time when Christoph Blocher was publisher of the "Bündner Tagblatt", in the mid-1980s, he was appointed editor-in-chief. It was thanks to him that he gave the second daily newspaper a voice and profile.

My memories of Christian Buxhofer go back to the nineties. Back then, we decided to set up a three-title system in Graubünden. Bündner Zeitung, Bündner Tagblatt and La Quotidiana under one publishing house. This team of architects needed journalists who could give shape and content to such a vision, which was being pursued for the first time in Switzerland. It would have been easy to remove the old, competing forces from this project and entrust new ones with the task of the future. However, it turned out that personalities such as Christian Buxhofer were ideally suited to bring their own voice and direction to the large ensemble. Together with his crew, he has made the Bündner Tagblatt an important voice within an important media company.

As an analyst, together with his counterpart Andrea Masüger, he built up two independent German-language newspapers. He succeeded in creating a local and regional voice, organizing a variety of information and incorporating a new heavyweight commentary section into the Bündner Tagblatt.

Christian Buxhofer was a conciliatory, good conversationalist who always remained true to his desire to have his own newspaper and his own voice. He was very familiar with the history of his newspaper, which had grown out of the Catholic-Conservative tradition and is the oldest title in Graubünden. He continued to develop this legacy and adapted it to changing circumstances in the best possible way.

I will always remember this time of building up the three-title system with personalities like Christian Buxhofer. His early death has deeply affected us all. The employees of Südostschweiz Medien and I, as publisher, offer my heartfelt condolences to his wife Angela and his family.

Billion-euro deal: Facebook buys Whatsapp

The world's largest online network Facebook is swallowing up the popular short message service Whatsapp for 16 billion dollars. The high purchase price will be paid in cash and Facebook shares. Whatsapp is to remain a separate service.

The purchase is to be paid for with four billion dollars in cash and Facebook shares worth twelve billion dollars, as Facebook announced on Wednesday. A further 3 billion dollars will later be paid to the founders and employees in the form of blocked shares. Smartphone users can exchange text messages or photos with each other via Whatsapp. Whatsapp has thus firmly established itself as an SMS alternative. The service has more than 450 million users per month, 70 percent of whom use it daily. "WhatsApp is on its way to connecting a billion people," explained Facebook CEO and founder Mark Zuckerberg. That is why the service is so valuable. Facebook itself has more than 1.2 billion users.

Financed by subscription, among other things

This also marks the end of an experiment for a communication service that was not based on user data and was not financed by advertising. Co-founder Jan Koum, who is now joining the Facebook Board of Directors, had always emphasized that this was not the intention. Whatsapp was initially financed by the purchase price for the app and most recently by an annual subscription fee of one dollar. In view of its size, Koum claimed a few weeks ago at the DLD internet conference in Munich that there was still enough money to run the company. Around 18 billion messages are sent worldwide every day. WhatsApp turned this avalanche around with a small budget and just 50 employees. Measured against this, the 16 billion dollars is a very proud price.

Largest acquisition

Facebook already has its own messaging service with similar functions. However, Mark Zuckerberg also bought the photo platform Instagram for almost one billion dollars, even though Facebook users were already able to share images. The Whatsapp takeover is the largest for Facebook to date. According to reports, Facebook also recently wanted to buy the currently popular photo app Snapchat, where images disappear by themselves, but the founders turned it down. The Whatsapp deal comes just a few days after the Japanese online retailer Rakuten bought the communication app Viber for 900 million dollars. Viber has 300 million users. (SDA)

Canal 3 turns 30

Canal 3 first went on the air on Feb. 29, 1984. The Biel-based local radio station is celebrating this milestone during its anniversary week, from Feb. 24 to 28, with special segments, promotions, and music.

During the birthday week from Monday to Thursday, Canal 3 will fulfill a music wish for 30 listeners. These can be submitted via the website form or by telephone. On Wednesday, February 26, 2014, the station invites five listeners to the studio. They will be part of the morning show over coffee, croissants and champagne. You can also register for this on the Website of Canal 3 log in.

As there is no February 29 this year, the first highlight of the celebration will be on Friday, February 28: "There will be 80s music all day, after all Canal 3 was founded during this time," says Denise Bolle, Head of Programs at Canal 3.

Denise Bolle announced in Wednesday's press release that a special event is planned for each month thereafter. March will continue with two people who have grown up at Canal 3: Mario Torriani, Head of Presentation at SRF 3, and Noah Veraguth, singer from Pegasus, will each present a morning show on Canal 3.

The highlight of the anniversary will be a party on Friday, October 24, 2014, at the Kufa Lyss with a showcase by Anna Rossinelli and Marc Sway. Tickets for this party are not available to buy, you can only win them at Canal 3. The first tickets will be raffled off on February 28, 2014 on the channel.

Last but not least: cronuts and noodle burgers

It all started with a cronut - a cross between a croissant and a donut. Now you can also get cragels, bruffins and noodle burgers in New York snack bars. Marketing on the Internet has done much to turn hermaphrodite snacks into a trend.

The cronut (you can find the recipe here) triggered a hype last year: On the "black market," the first Cronuts were reportedly traded for up to $100.

This cronut is now followed by the cragel (croissant bagel), the bruffin (brioche muffin), and the ramen burger (burger sandwiched between ramen noodles instead of hamburger bread). Apparently, it's not just the culinary experience that fascinates people. By combining popular traditional dishes in a new way, the people humorously question the common food culture.

Cronuts, ramen burgers and the like are not only eaten, but also shared with friends and acquaintances. The trend is spreading rapidly because everyone wants to show that they are part of it. Hermaphrodite snack chefs are targeting social media. The inventors of the Ramen Burger regularly post photos on their Facebook fan page. And the Bruffin even hired its own social media expert.

Unfortunately, there are no known hermaphrodite snacks in Switzerland. But the trend could perhaps inspire Sprüngli to create a Luxemgipfeli. (sis)

Protest against Tamedia social plan

Employees of Landbote, Zürichsee-Zeitung, and Zürcher Unterländer have presented a petition to Tamedia group representatives. They are calling for the implementation of a 2009 social plan.

According to Impressum, around 100 people from all locations took part in the action. They presented a petition to Ueli Eckstein, Head of Regional Media German-speaking Switzerland at Tamedia, in front of the Landbote editorial building in Winterthur. In it, they demand that the redundancy plan from 2009 be applied to the planned redundancies. This was negotiated for Tages-Anzeiger employees.

The current social plan for regional newspaper employees is dramatically worse. For example, all severance payments and compensatory payments in addition to daily allowances have been cut. According to Impressum and Syndicom, the petition was signed by 443 people, including numerous colleagues from other Tamedia locations.

25 full-time positions to be cut

Tamedia acknowledges the protest, but emphasizes that the present redundancy plan should not be compared with previous benefits. The redundancy plan from 2009 was negotiated for the Tages-Anzeiger and cannot be transferred to other editorial offices. A total of 25 full-time positions will be cut at the Stäfa, Bülach and Winterthur sites. Redundancies are expected to be announced in the coming weeks.

Criticism of Imprint and Syndicom

In a press release issued by Syndicom and Impressum on Wednesday, it was asked whether the Group wants to assume its responsibility for the Winterthur media center and a healthy newspaper density, or whether it is still only interested in increasing profits. There is no reason why the editorial offices, whose substance is now under attack, should be treated less favorably. Especially as Tamedia has continuously increased its profits in the years since then.
