Successful first half-year for Ringier Africa

Three years ago, Ringier launched its business operations in Africa. Switzerland’s largest international media company was already able to quadruple its revenue there in the first half of 2014 compared to the entire previous year.

The strong revenue growth in the first six months of this year resulted from a professional scaling of existing products, as well as the acquisition of well-known global corporations as media and advertising partners, the company writes. Julian Artopé, Director Ringier Africa: "In particular, the adjustment of our content and classified products in West Africa, and the expansion of our number 1 position in the eCommerce business in Kenya have contributed to this success."

Today, Ringier is active in the four African states of Kenya, Ghana, Nigeria and Senegal. Three of these are among the most attractive growth markets for large American and European companies. The absolute leader in the corresponding sentiment index (as of June 2014 of the "Frontier Markets Sentiment Index," which is compiled exclusively for the Wall Street Journal) is Nigeria. With its fastest-growing economy, the former problem child of West Africa is attracting the interest of foreign investors.

Five of Ringier's eight platforms in Africa are already market leaders, according to the statement. With Rupu, the largest online store in East Africa has been successfully established in Kenya. The site is based on the model of the DeinDeal sales platform in Switzerland. The same model was successfully applied with Tisu in Ghana, where the platform is also the market leader. In Nigeria, the entertainment news platform Pulse, modeled on the Swiss news platform Blick.ch, is growing and now reaches more than four million page views per month. Allsports in Ghana is also now the number one sports portal with 2.5 million monthly pageviews. At the beginning of the year, Ringier acquired a majority stake in Expat-Dakar, Senegal's largest classified marketplace.

Migros Medien print jobs awarded

Migros Media is continuing to rely on its existing printing partners, Tamedia and Ringier, and thus will continue to use exclusively Swiss printing companies.

The Migros weekly newspapers Migros-Magazin and Migros Magazine will continue to be printed by Tamedia at its sites in Zurich, Bern and Bussigny VD, and by Ringier Print in Adligenswil LU. The new printing contracts for a total printing volume of 2.1 million copies per week will apply from 2015 and have been concluded for a term of three years. They were awarded to the two print partners following a careful evaluation.

Lorenz Bruegger, Head of Migros Media Management: "It wasn't just economic criteria that played a role in the decision. Our print partners have also convinced us in the past in terms of print quality and flexibility."

ROI: TV advertising is top

In light of the changes in the media landscape, marketing decision-makers are asking themselves more than ever what return on investment (ROI) their advertising francs are generating—and which media formats are the most efficient and effective.

The latest "Payback 4" study, which was conducted by the marketing performance specialists at Ebiquity on behalf of the British industry organization Thinkbox, shows that TV advertising is top in terms of both efficiency and effectiveness in an inter-media comparison. According to an econometric analysis of 4,500 advertising campaigns, the impact of TV advertising has actually increased over time - TV advertising has never been more efficient and effective than it is today.

First of all, the statistical studies show that every pound invested in TV advertising in the period from 2011 to 2014 returned an average of £1.79. No other media category examined achieved a comparable return. TV is followed at some distance by radio with an ROI of £1.52 and print media with a return of £1.48. Online display advertising only achieves an average return of 0.91 pounds per pound invested, while outdoor advertising performs even worse with an ROI of 0.37 pounds.

Particularly interesting: TV advertising not only achieves the highest ROI in an intermedia comparison - according to the study, its efficiency has even increased over time. In the period from 2008 to 2011, the average return on TV advertising was 1.70 pounds, from 2011 to 2014 it was 1.79 pounds - an increase of 5 percent. Radio (+3%) and print advertising (+6%) have also gained in efficiency, while online display (-14%) and outdoor advertising (-18%) have lost significantly. A more detailed analysis of individual product categories shows that TV advertising not only achieves the highest efficiency values overall, but also in all sectors examined - retail, financial services and consumer goods. In retail, every pound invested in TV advertising leads to a profit of 2.87 pounds (+11% compared to 2008-2011), followed by print in second place with a payback of 2.65 pounds. In the financial services sector, the ROI of TV advertising is 2.48 pounds (+3%), well ahead of the return of second-placed radio advertising (1.95). In the consumer goods sector, the ROI is generally lower - but here too, TV advertising achieves the highest efficiency values with a return of 0.63 pounds (+5%), ahead of radio (0.24).

TV advertising not only outperforms other media types in terms of efficiency, but also in terms of effectiveness. On average, TV commercials (index 100) increase sales almost twice as much as print advertising (index 52), the second most effective media category. Radio (27), online display (13) and outdoor advertising (11) are even further behind in terms of effectiveness. Compared to the period from 2008 to 2011, the effectiveness of TV advertising also increased slightly by 2.5% in the period from 2011 to 2014. In addition to these key findings, the study comes to three other interesting conclusions. Firstly, TV advertising for a product also radiates to other, non-advertised offers of the advertising brand: 37% of the total sales effect achieved is attributable to products that are not directly advertised. Secondly, TV advertising significantly increases the impact of other forms of advertising. This multiplier effect of TV can account for more than 100 percent of radio advertising and up to 50 percent of print and outdoor advertising. Search queries on Google & Co. can also be significantly increased by TV advertising. Thirdly and finally, the analyses show that TV sponsorship also achieves a very high ROI. In the sub-sample examined, the payback of TV sponsorship at 0.87 pounds was below that of TV commercials (1.51), but clearly above the return of print (0.70), radio (0.65) and outdoor advertising (0.50).

Werbestadt creates web design for Calia blinds

Werbestadt has redesigned the web design for Calia-Storen. Before the relaunch, the agency clarified the identity and design requirements as well as defined the technical wishes and conditions.

The personal support, the lush product selection and the impressive list of references were identified as the USP. Based on this key message, the client wanted an aesthetic, clear and functional website, the agency said in a statement Wednesday. Further needs were an optimal adaptation of the contents to the various end devices as well as a user-friendly content management system, in order to be able to make own additions on the side. The specifications were implemented through a responsive web design with an emphasis on scrolling instead of elaborate navigation.

Yahoo boss Marissa Mayer loses advertising revenue

Marissa Mayer actually took the helm two years ago to halt Yahoo's decline. But her efforts to boost the advertising business at the internet veteran seem to be falling flat.

Yahoo boss Marissa Mayer is running out of advertising customers. The US internet company made significantly less money from graphic ads in the second quarter. This pulled total turnover down by 4 percent to 1.1 billion dollars. Profits fell by 19 percent to 270 million dollars compared to the same period last year.

"We are not satisfied with the results in the second quarter," Mayer admitted on Tuesday (local time) at the company headquarters in Sunnyvale, California. Since taking office in the summer of 2012, the former Google manager has been pursuing the plan of attracting more users through new content and functions, thereby also bringing more advertisements to Yahoo's offerings. However, investors are not very convinced by the development so far. The share price fell by 3 percent in after-hours trading.

Yahoo is suffering from tough competition from rivals such as Google and Facebook. All three companies are largely financed by advertising. On the one hand, they sell graphic advertisements - so-called banners - and on the other, paid links on search engines. Yahoo was once again able to make gains in search engine advertising, which slowed the downward trend somewhat.

Mayer's relationship with advertisers recently hit the headlines when she was late for an important dinner at an industry trade fair in Cannes. Critics interpreted this as disrespect for advertisers.

Fortunately for Mayer, Yahoo is a major shareholder in the Chinese internet retailer Alibaba, which plans to go public in New York in the near future. The IPO could be bigger than that of Facebook. In the past, the Alibaba stake had already compensated for many problems in Yahoo's core business.

However, Yahoo will sell fewer shares in the course of the IPO than originally announced, namely 140 million dollars instead of 208 million dollars. The announcement was received positively by many investors, as it means that Yahoo would benefit from a possible subsequent increase in the share price. Yahoo CFO Ken Goldman promised to distribute at least half of the after-tax proceeds from the remaining share sales to its own shareholders. (SDA)

Last but not least: "Luxury redefined"

Australian advertising executive David Johns actually just wanted to sell his old car. But then he shot a commercial that is anything but used or cheap.

"Luxury redefined" is one of the slogans in the commercial, which showcases a used car built in 1999. As David Johns is advertising his car - a Holden Barina - for sale and not just for fun, he has also created a special Website created. It ironically presents the used car in a very positive light.
The commercial has already been published on Huffingtonpost.de and Masahble.com. News.com has even already spoken to him about his elaborate "sales pitch".

//www.youtube.com/watch?v=BJj7Km7Raks

The car is "very reliable", according to the commercial. But how much does the car cost that the owner has gone to so much trouble to sell? Around 1,000 dollars, writes Mashable.com. Of course, such an effort is totally worth it...
But an effective sale was not the main reason for this spot. In truth, Johns simply had the time and wanted to show off his skills, as he told News.com. Too bad - as wacky and funny as the ad is, his motivations don't sound wacky or exciting at all. "I really wanted to redefine luxury", or "Only the best for my car" would somehow have gone down better as a reason than "out of boredom". (uma)

SRG ombudsman criticizes radio report

Radio SRF reported in April that oil company Weatherford’s decision to leave Switzerland was linked to the immigration initiative. The SRG ombudsman deemed the report «unobjective,» as the NLZ reported on Wednesday.

The radio program clearly suggests "that Switzerland will suffer considerable job losses if the immigration initiative is accepted", according to the final report, which is also available to the SDA news agency. It is concealed that Weatherford only employs four people in Switzerland, which makes any reference to the mass immigration initiative misleading.

The radio program quotes from a letter to shareholders, according to which Weatherford's reasons for leaving Switzerland include the political changes in Switzerland. However, according to the ombudsman, the statement may also refer to other changes, such as the accepted rip-off initiative or the corporate tax reform. The rip-off initiative is also mentioned. However, the report focuses on the SVP initiative, writes the ombudsman.

The SVP, which submitted the complaint, is not satisfied with this reprimand. It is taking the case to the Independent Complaints Authority for Radio and Television (UBI), as the SVP's Deputy Secretary General Silvia Bär confirmed to theSDAa.

The oil company Weatherford announced at the beginning of April that it was moving its headquarters from Zug to Ireland. (SDA)

Paywall for all Tamedia paid newspapers

In March, Tamedia introduced a paywall for the online offering of the Tages-Anzeiger. The model will be introduced for all of Tamedia's paid offerings in the coming months, says Tamedia CEO Christoph Tonini in the Handelszeitung.

"By the end of 2015, we will have switched all paid newspapers to the digital payment model," says Tonini. The next newspaper to introduce a paywall will be the Bernese Bund. Tonini: "After the Tages-Anzeiger, we will start with the Bund in Bern, followed by 24 heures and Tribune de Genève in French-speaking Switzerland." Tonini has big plans for the merger of the two directory services Local.ch and Search.ch: "Together with Swisscom, we don't just want to offer a simple directory, but to develop services for small and medium-sized Swiss companies that will allow them to conduct modern online marketing."

In addition, the editorial teams of the Tages-Anzeiger and Sonntagszeitung are to work more closely together. This applies to the society and culture sections. Tonini: "There are certainly other areas such as layout, infographics or proofreading where the two editorial teams can work together." He continues: "Cooperation in the domestic, federal and business sections is more challenging, but not inconceivable in the long term." However, the Sonntagszeitung should not become the 7th edition of the Tages-Anzeiger. (SDA)

Media mogul Murdoch reaches for Time Warner

In his 83 years of life, Rupert Murdoch has created one of the largest media empires in the world with newspapers, TV stations and a film studio. He now seems to be working on finally creating a monument to himself.

In recent weeks, Murdoch has attempted to swallow up rival Time Warner. Although Time Warner has rejected the advances, Murdoch could increase his offer. Murdoch's 21st Century Fox group confirmed on Wednesday that it had submitted an offer for a merger to Time Warner in June. "The board of directors of Time Warner has declined to accept our offer," explained 21st Century Fox at its headquarters in New York. "We are not currently in discussions with Time Warner."

The deal would be the crowning achievement of Murdoch's career, in which he has created a global media group. A merged industry giant would include television channels such as Fox, TNT and the popular US pay-TV channel HBO ("Game of Thrones"); the major Hollywood studios 20th Century Fox and Warner Bros. would also be part of the deal.

Insider: 80 billion offered

According to the New York Times, which first got wind of the offer, and the Reuters news agency, Murdoch offered 80 billion dollars for Time Warner. The news channel CNN, which belongs to Time Warner, could be sold on in order to allay any concerns of the competition authorities. With Fox News, Murdoch operates one of the fiercest rivals in the USA.

According to the information, Murdoch's right-hand man Chase Carey met with Time-Warner boss Jeff Bewkes in June to make him an offer. At 85 dollars per share, the offer was a quarter higher than the share price at the time. Part of the purchase price was to be paid in shares of Murdoch's media group 21st Century Fox. According to the Wall Street Journal, Murdoch submitted his offer again in writing in July. Among other things, Murdoch's Fox had estimated that a merger of the companies could reduce costs by around one billion dollars, primarily through job cuts.

Following the rejection, Murdoch's next move is unclear, wrote the New York Times. The financial news agency Bloomberg reported, citing an insider, that Murdoch was quite prepared to pay more than 85 dollars per Time Warner share. The stock jumped 16 percent to 82.50 dollars in pre-market trading on Wednesday. (SDA)

Relaunch for "Fritz+Fränzi

In September 2014, the Swiss parenting magazine «Fritz+Fränzi» will be relaunched with a new look. The relaunch of the parenting magazine, which has a circulation of over 100,000 copies, is being led by Stephanie Ringel.

In addition to a name change, there are also changes in design and content. "With the relaunch, we want to sharpen the editorial content. To do this, we are guided by criteria such as better readability, clearer structure, new topic weighting. And we are oriented to the reader and his needs, which is particularly important to us," says Stephanie Ringel about the relaunch. Ringel previously worked as a journalist and project manager for high-reach media such as "Bild am Sonntag," "Tagesspiegel," "Sonntagsblick" and "Schweizer Illustrierte. The political scientist and art historian currently heads the Swiss editorial department of the trade magazine "Schöner Wohnen.

"We are redesigning the sections and we will have an innovative online presence. We are currently working out exactly what this will look like and what the new name will be," says "Fritz+Fränzi" managing director Thomas Schlickenrieder in a statement. The focus of the magazine will, however, continue to be on topics such as school, education, career planning, health and leisure. "With the relaunch, we not only want to expand our topic leadership in education, school and career planning, health, leisure and intercultural coexistence, but also be easily accessible via all digital channels and be the first source of advice on parenting issues," says Schlickenrieder.

The redesigned magazine will be available at selected newsstands, from the publisher and online from September 11.
