The salt in the story

Wirz Corporate has created a new overall brand identity for Schweizer Salinen. A new educational film by Seed also plays an important role in this effort. The film aims to convey information through storytelling.

The Swiss salt works reliably supply the whole of Switzerland with salt. In addition, the salt experts are committed to imparting knowledge: they provide schools with teaching materials on the subject of salt and offer guided tours for visitors at their sites.

Until recently, the Swiss salt market was regulated as follows: The salt works in Bex supplied salt to the Vaud region. The rest of Switzerland was served by the Swiss Rhine Salt Works from Schweizerhalle. Now the two companies have merged and jointly handle the entire Swiss salt market.

The new situation became the occasion for a new overall appearance. After a pitch, this assignment went to Wirz Corporate. The agency developed the new brand identity for Swiss Saltworks, which also includes the new website www.salz.ch.

As part of the overall mandate, the question of a new knowledge film on the subject of salt soon arose. "Previously, a classic but aging documentary film served this need, " explains Lukas Hänggi, senior consultant at Wirz Corporate. "Today's viewing habits, as well as the demand to captivate and inspire the viewer, led to the fundamental decision that we no longer wanted to make a classic informational film. That's how we turned to Seed." The salt works' latest communication tool is now the entertaining, nearly 20-minute short feature film "Gipfelstürmer." Schoolchildren are an important target group for this new salt film. It will be distributed to all Swiss schools, among others.

The story: For a lecture on salt, Tina researches directly on site at the Swiss salt works. The expert Daniel Hauser enthusiastically introduces her to all the secrets. But why are they being secretly followed by Tina's brother Leo and his buddy Mark? And what is it about the salt mountain?

Embedded in this story, "Gipfelstürmer" tells everything worth knowing about salt. Among other things, the film addresses historical backgrounds, the importance of salt for the human body, the formation of salt, methods of salt extraction, as well as the production of salt and its many applications. "A topic that fascinates," Felix Courvoisier is convinced. Still, that wasn't enough for the producer at Seed.

It's not facts but stories that drive us. A film with a good story involves the viewer and doesn't let go.

Storytelling is the salt in any communication

"Brain research shows that humans have an episodic memory. We remember narratives better," says Felix Courvoisier. For "Gipfelstürmer," the authors have therefore deliberately focused on storytelling. This should also give the information the necessary spice that keeps the target audience as engaged as possible. "It's human nature that we like good stories. We want to empathize, go along for the ride, guess how the story will end. A good story involves the audience and doesn't let go." It's often the case that viewers don't willingly "expose" themselves to an informational film - especially if they're high school students. With a curiosity-raising storyline, a well-made film can still engage its audience - making the packaged messages play. For millennia, this desire for stories has been deeply ingrained in us. According to brain researcher Manfred Spitzer, "It's not facts but stories that drive us, make us sit up and take notice, affect us and never leave our minds."

For the screenplay, it is therefore important to set a momentum: How does the story end? "Once we've got the viewer hooked, he'll stay tuned," the filmmakers at Seed are convinced. That's why this basic principle was also followed for "Gipfelstürmer". Likewise, the online use of moving images is strongly influencing the way cinematic storytelling is done. "Faster, shorter, more surprising are the guidelines," Courvoisier knows. Stories have to be told in such a way that a basic tension is built up in the shortest possible time that captivates the viewer. On the Internet, people immediately zap on if they get bored. The only answer to this is to create films that grab the user.

This can be achieved in corporate publishing if the creatives know the interests and needs of the target groups and always critically review the sender's goals. "A film in which we say everything the client wants to say but no one wants to watch is no use." Three new films are now on offer for the salt works. The knowledge film featuring the adventure of the "summit strikers" is 19 minutes long. In parallel, the image film "We make salt," which lasts just under three minutes, was produced. The animated film "The salt experts in brief" gives a compact insight into the activities of the Swiss salt works within 90 seconds.

Last but not least: playfully refreshed

In Ukraine, a beverage vending machine provided some musical entertainment: Anyone who played it well received free mineral water.

In June, the Ukrainian city of Lviv hosted the annual Alfa Jazz Festival took place. To mark the musical festivities, the Kiev agency Banda set up a mixture of piano and drinks machine in the city center for the Borjomi mineral water brand.

The curious passers-by gradually became aware that the keyboard was not there for decoration, but rather to replace the cash inlet. Only those who played for a certain amount of time - and at least with good will - were finally rewarded with a bottle of drink. And with an exhilarating experience.

The idea may not be earth-shattering - but it is at least charming. And if only half of the amused passers-by shown in the Case film are real, even more charming. Good ideas are definitely crisis-resistant. (hae)

Brand and Marketing Day 2014: "Before the fall"

Entrepreneurs, marketing professionals, and unconventional thinkers gathered for the 16th Brand and Marketing Day. Under the theme «Before the Fall,» speakers such as internet guru Sascha Lobo, retail expert Stephan Jung, and attorney Valentin Landmann presented their case studies.

Case of luck, case of hardship, case of success, extreme case, disintegration? On October 21, 2014, experts from a wide range of fields gave an insight into their own personal case at the Brand and Marketing Day (BMT). Under the deliberately provocative motto "Before the fall", more than 500 entrepreneurs, managers, experts and lateral thinkers from all sectors met once again in the Kursaal Bern. For this year's event, the organizers were able to attract Sascha Lobo, the enfant terrible and German figurehead of the Internet, among others, to the BMT.

"The enthusiasm for data borders on esotericism"

Lobo showed with ruthless honesty and dry humour how the development of an anti-aircraft gun in the Second World War led to the enthusiasm for collecting all kinds of data about people in order to be able to analyze their behaviour as precisely as possible. A good idea also works without precise information about the potential target group. Lobo concluded his critical presentation with a biting comment: "The enthusiasm for data borders on esotericism."

"We live the rest of our lives in the future"

Innovation and retail expert Stephan Jung also succeeded in leaving the audience unsettled. Jung is regarded as the mastermind behind numerous future trends. His presentation should be understood as a wake-up call: "Reality hurts." Jung described strategies and ways in which brands can prepare themselves for the future.

The multifaceted nature of the BMT was particularly evident with star lawyer Valentin Landmann: the tough cases of the dazzling criminal defense lawyer took visitors into the dark underworld. Landmann also gave the more than 500 guests tips for their own court cases: "1. never lie - except to public prosecutors and judges. 2. do not withhold any information. 3. the media is interested in the person and not the case: show that you are a person and not a monster. 4. be open and make the media your allies."

Success stories such as those created by Daniel Bloch, CEO of Chocolats Camille Bloch, and Heinrich Villiger of Villiger - The World of Cigars were also featured at the BMT. The Brand and Marketing Day was hosted by SRF presenter Steffi Buchli.

Launch of BMT Award in Sponsorship

The entry window for the newly launched BMT Award in Sponsorship, which is presented to companies and institutions that stand for special achievements in the field of sponsorship, will open in November. A jury and the public will select the winner from the fields of sport, culture and young talent.

The next BMT will take place in Biel for the first time

Since 1987, the BMT has stood for strong entrepreneurship. In 26 years, 15 events have been held, each with over 500 participants. In order to anchor this attractive networking and inspiration platform more broadly, the annual BMT will now alternate between Bern and the Stade de Biel/Bienne.

TBWA: New TV spots for Deindeal.ch

TBWA\Zurich has created three new commercials for the shopping portal Deindeal. They are intended to dispel any doubts customers may have.

Some customers are not always comfortable with deals such as a dinner with fillet of beef à deux in a gourmet restaurant with up to 50 percent off the price, according to a statement. The new spots are intended to dispel these doubts with charm and mischievousness. They communicate that you can get the same offer much cheaper at one of the largest Swiss shopping platforms, because Deindeal aggregates the demand of as many customers as possible and thus gets better purchase prices. In three consumption situations, customers put identical offers through their paces. They find no difference - except for the price. (And thus receive their Deindeal purchase argument).

The spots can be seen throughout Switzerland since October 20.

Weather fairy rescues St. Bernard

No winter without a Suzuki TV commercial by Metzgerlehner: This year, weather forecaster Sandra Zellweger rescues a St. Bernard in the picturesque Piz Sulai region. In the supporting roles of the winter drama: several St. Bernard puppies.

According to the statement, the TV spot is intended to dramatize the generous space in the new Suzuki SX4 S-Cross on the one hand, and the reliable winter safety of the entire Suzuki 4×4 range on the other. State-of-the-art CGI technology was used for the elaborate landscape design of the snow-covered Piz Sulai area. The result: an authentically staged winter idyll.

Suzuki has been supporting the foundation in Martigny for several years.

Change of leadership at Apps with love

Beni Hirt, co-founder and CEO of Apps with love, will be leaving the company at the end of 2014. The existing partners—Stephan Klaus, Till Könneker, and Olivier Oswald—will take over his stake and continue to lead the company.

Stephan Klaus is the new managing director. The reason given in a press release is a difference of opinion in the management of the company between Beni Hirt (picture) and the other partners. Beni Hirt is therefore looking for a new challenge. The Apps with love team wants to continue on its successful path as a Swiss developer of beautiful and user-friendly apps, the statement continues.

Advico: Recruiting campaign for SBB

In a new recruitment campaign, Advico Y&R shows that there are many great things about working at SBB.

SBB is looking for new employees and positioning itself as a modern employer with a lot to offer. In the familiar recruiting campaign style, the subjects show employees in mirrored situations that illustrate the dual advantages of a job at SBB. Craftsmen and women, for example, not only bear responsibility for Switzerland's mobility, but are also part of a strong community whose team spirit never ends, even in their free time. Or as a computer scientist, you develop innovative applications that move not only SBB, but also the whole of Switzerland. The campaign with four subjects can be seen on image ads, posters and online banners throughout Switzerland.
