Sales targets for NZZ History already exceeded

The first issue of NZZ Geschichte, the history magazine of the Neue Zürcher Zeitung, will be published on Thursday. Even before the issue is released, the media company is pleased with the demand. It has received a large number of subscription orders.

The sales targets were exceeded by far, the NZZ announced on Wednesday. The full-year target for 2015 has already almost been achieved. However, the publisher will not disclose any specific figures on request. The magazine will be published four times a year. The initial print run is 20,000 copies. Topics in the first issue include Napoleon, the history of motherly love, the Buchenwald concentration camp and - in keeping with the anniversary year - the Battle of Marignano. A debate on this topic is published between historian André Holenstein and BAZ editor-in-chief Markus Somm, who was briefly under discussion as NZZ editor-in-chief.

Peer Teuwsen, Head of New Journalistic Products at NZZ, is responsible for publishing the magazine. With NZZ Geschichte, Teuwsen wants to "combine the virtue of narrative with the virtue of factual accuracy and explain where we come from - in order to understand who we are today". Teuwsen was deputy editor-in-chief of the magazine for five years; before moving to the NZZ, he built up the Swiss and Hamburg editions of Die Zeit. Teuwsen is supported by journalist, historian and author Martin Beglinger. The magazine was created by designer Tyler Brûlé. (pd/hae/SDA)

Ringier goes Silicon Valley

The media company Ringier, in partnership with Swiss Post and the insurance group Mobiliar, is launching an innovation program in Silicon Valley, California. Employees are expected to bring back new ideas from there to their respective companies.

Employees from the three companies are to undergo further training in Palo Alto for one to three months - for example in the areas of innovation, product and process ideas. They work together on a given topic or project and apply what they have learned in their companies. Ringier, Swiss Post and Mobiliar are conducting the program together because many market, future and innovation topics are similar across industries, according to a Ringier communiqué Wednesday. The program will be advertised internally at Ringier at the beginning of May 2015. All employees are eligible to apply, not just members of management. (SDA)

Blick TV is discontinued

Three years after its launch, Blick TV will go off the air at the end of May. Ringier is discontinuing its own Internet TV service and will partner with the Swiss provider Zattoo, according to a statement released on Tuesday.

Ringier informed its customers in a newsletter that it was saying goodbye to its own Internet TV offering and would in future be working with a strong partner - namely Zattoo. Ringier justifies the change to Zattoo with the insufficient quality of the streaming offer. This had increasingly no longer met the quality requirements, said Ringier Group spokesman Edi Estermann on request. There had been repeated negative reactions from customers. Because the price-performance ratio was no longer right, Ringier looked around for an alternative and found it in Zattoo.

Zattoo started operations on the occasion of the 2006 World Cup with an initial four Swiss TV channels. Today, 75 channels can be received via the Internet. The fact that Zattoo belongs to the Tamedia Group is not a problem, Estermann said. "After all, we also work together in other areas." To "sweeten" the start with the new partner, users will receive a voucher with which they can record and watch all broadcasts of the past 7 days for a week, according to the Internet platform. (SDA)

Andrea Jansen launches Kasperli picture book

For the first time, readers can not only listen to Kasperli but also see him in *S verzauberete Flugzüüg*. The story was written by Andrea Jansen, and the children's book was illustrated by Stephanie Türck.

Written in High German, but with many "Kasperli expressions" in dialect. At the same time, Andreas and Conrad are already releasing their seventh CD "S Wältall-Trampolin / En Berg zum Zmorgä". As guest speakers Birgit Steinegger transforms into a crazy moon woman and Peach Weber into a retired astronaut.

Four years ago, the Kasperli team around Nik Hartmann, Andrea Jansen and David Bröckelmann began to resurrect the new Kasperli stories in the old tradition. Initiated by the people agency Andreas & Conrad, there are now 14 radio plays with Switzerland's best-known joker on the market. The makers attach great importance to making Switzerland's dialect diversity audible in the stories and to entertaining above all the children, but also the parents. On CD No. 7, the probably best-known jelly bag wearer not only jumps with the trampoline into the Wältall (story by Nadia Meier), but also tries his hand as a mountain climber - Kasperli wants to get to the Matterhorn (by Anja Knabenhans) just in time for the 150th anniversary celebration and finds Granita there, who wants to eat the most famous mountain in the world!

"S verzauberete Flugzüüg" was already published as a radio play in 2012, and now Andrea Jansen has rewritten the story for the first Punch and Judy book. The unmistakable "Kasperli expressions" were additionally illustrated by Stephanie Türck - and so there are also cats in the heavenly kingdom of Motzli, the bored cloud boy who enchants Kasperli's plane. The book is suitable for looking at, reading aloud and reading by oneself and will be available in stores from April 17.

Swisscom TV 2.0 brings HbbTV to SRG channels

Swisscom will switch on the multimedia teletext successor on Tuesday. HbbTV will be available on the SRG's HD channels. However, the new service is also controversial.

"The interactive television experience offers our viewers essential additional information, which we will continue to add over the coming years," said Roger de Weck, Director General of SRG, in a statement. HbbTV can also be received on the ARD, ZDF, ORF 1 and ORF 2 channels.

Unbenannt-6_69

Traditional teletext is still a popular media channel in Switzerland, with around 800,000 people accessing news and other information on their TV every day. Hybrid Broadcast Broadband TV, or HbbTV for short, is now opening up new possibilities to complement this: Thanks to the connection to the Internet, TV viewers can access interactive content. Swisscom is now launching HbbTV for all Swisscom TV 2.0 customers. The new service brings multimedia content to the screen parallel to the television program. Viewers can, for example, access additional interactive information on the current television program or online video libraries and actively participate in televoting. Texts, sports results and weather forecasts are supplemented with images.

Roger de Weck, Director General of SRG: "The audience follows our broadcasts both on the channels and via the Internet. This makes the close interaction between channels and the Internet all the more important: between broadcast and broadband. Interactive television HbbTV or SmartTV offers our viewers essential additional information, which we will continue to add to in the coming years."

Criticism and fears in the run-up

In the run-up to the introduction of HbbTV in Switzerland, the Swiss Media Association expressed particular concern (Werbewoche.ch reported). The publishers criticized, among other things, that HbbTV could be the first step towards the introduction of online advertising by SRG. In contrast to the classic online sector, advertising is permitted in teletext and is therefore also permitted on HbbTV via the TV signal. SRG media spokesperson Daniel Steiner rejects these concerns for the time being in an interview with Werbewoche.ch: "The current technical trial license for HbbTV does not allow SRG SSR to place advertising or links to online stores on its HbbTV services." It is up to the responsible authority (Federal Council/Uvek/Bakom) to decide whether this will change at some point. In the consultation on the new Radio and Television Ordinance (RTVO), SRG had argued in favor of opening up advertising and justified this.

The SRG statement is available on the Bakom page can be viewed online (point 4, Link PDF). In it, SRG writes, among other things, that in contrast to the online offerings, advertising and sponsorship in SRG's teletext has "always been virtually undisputed" and the public is used to it - it therefore seems logical that SRG should also be able to commercialize the successor service. Not least in order to "at least partially" compensate for the loss of income from teletext.

Another thorn in the side of the Swiss Media Association is the possible commercial exploitation of user data: "HbbTV also enables TV broadcasters to (...) collect user data and exploit it further. This also competes with the private media houses and their offerings. With HbbTV, customers pay twice: with their fees and with their data." What happens to all the user data? "SRG only uses a small amount of data and does not pass it on," says Steiner. The Data protection regulations could be accessed directly on the SRG's HbbTV service. (hae/pd)

"The Migrants Files" wins EPP

The data project «The Migrants Files,» in which the NZZ also participated, was awarded the «European Press Prize» (EPP) in Amsterdam in the «Innovation Award» category.

"The Migrants Files" uses a detailed dataset to document the deaths of refugees on their way to Europe. Journalists from six European countries worked together on the project - including a team from the Neue Zürcher Zeitung led by data journalist Sylke Gruhnwald, who set up the NZZ Data Team. On March 31, 2014, the Neue Zürcher Zeitung and other media involved in the project published the initial findings of the project.

Since 2012, the "European Press Prize" has honored outstanding work by journalists from the 47 member states of the Council of Europe. The prize is awarded in four categories, each endowed with 10,000 euros: "The Investigative Reporting Award", "The Distinguished Writing Award", "The Commentator Award" and "The Innovation Award". The latter category recognizes a pioneering presentation, technique or journalistic approach to journalism.

Executives like the NZZ

The MA Leader survey of Swiss executives, conducted every two years by Wemf, shows that the NZZ am Sonntag is the most popular publication among Swiss executives. Among daily newspapers, the Neue Zürcher Zeitung tops the rankings.

For daily newspaper reading, the Neue Zürcher Zeitung is the first choice of German-speaking Swiss executives, with a reach of 22.2 percent. The Tages-Anzeiger follows in second place with a reach of 21.3 percent. While the Neue Zürcher Zeitung is read for an average of almost half an hour (27.9 minutes), the reading time of the Tages-Anzeiger amounts to 22.7 minutes.

The clear number one among all the publications surveyed is the NZZ am Sonntag with a reach of 27.5 percent - this corresponds to 91'000 of 333'000 leaders in German-speaking Switzerland. The Sonntagszeitung, Das Magazin and NZZ Folio follow in the next places. In addition, NZZ am Sonntag is the title to which executives devote the most time, with an average of 41 minutes of reading time. In terms of website and app usage, the Neue Zürcher Zeitung takes the top spot among the publications surveyed.

Steven Neubauer, NZZ Managing Director: "Decision-makers and opinion leaders are an important target group for our products and also for many of our advertising clients. That's why the MA Leader study is a valuable source of information for us. The top scores of the NZZ titles show that we were again able to achieve broad coverage in this survey period."

Even clearer top position among the top leaders

Among the Top Leaders, the NZZ titles lead the ranking by an even clearer margin. 26.7 percent of the Top Leaders in German-speaking Switzerland regularly choose the Neue Zürcher Zeitung for their daily newspaper reading. The second-placed Tages-Anzeiger has a share of 21.7 percent. If the top leaders are asked about all daily and weekly publications, two NZZ products are in the top three places: NZZ am Sonntag (32.2 percent) followed by Sonntagszeitung (29.3 percent) and NZZ Folio (28.0 percent).

In both the Leaders and the Top Leaders, the Neue Zürcher Zeitung has moved up in the rankings since the last survey 2013 improved by two places. However, the first-placed medium in 2013, 20 Minuten, no longer took part in the study, as the news agency SDA writes. The significance of the study is limited, since it only takes into account who pays for it. NZZ am Sonntag rose four places among the leaders and three places among the top leaders, so that it now leads the ranking of both leader groups. The results are based on 2'479 interviews in German-speaking Switzerland and 770 in French-speaking Switzerland (weighted case numbers). The group of leaders includes executives with a personal annual income of 100'000 Swiss francs or more, while the group of top leaders, which is included, includes leaders with a personal annual income of 140'000 Swiss francs or more Overall, there are 436'000 leaders in German- and French-speaking Switzerland; of these, 333'000 live in German-speaking Switzerland, 103'000 in French-speaking Switzerland. Due to a methodological change, the 2015 results are not comparable with those of previous years.

Condor Films: Grand Tour of Switzerland staged

Switzerland Tourism is launching the campaign for the new Grand Tour of Switzerland adventure route with an event film created by Condor Films.

On the Grand Tour of Switzerland, the journey is the destination. Switzerland's new adventure route is a journey of discovery covering 1,600 kilometers through four language regions, over five Alpine passes, to eleven UNESCO World Heritage Sites and two biospheres and along 22 lakes. At the heart of the launch campaign is a modular event film that presents the highlights of the Grand Tour and the regions in the best possible light. The two mountain climbers Sebi and Paul start the film with a humorous link to the previous commercials, before the film focuses on what the Grand Tour of Switzerland is all about: a concentrated load of Switzerland with scenic and cultural gems. The film will be broadcast in two different length versions in Germany and Switzerland and used worldwide as a three-minute version online and at events.

Filming took place for four weeks along the route of the Grand Tour of Switzerland. Together with the actors and the film crew, an Audi 100 from the 1970s and two modern Harley Davidson motorcycles toured Switzerland in style.

Online, moving image communication has a interactive web route to the side. The Grand Tour of Switzerland is prominently presented in print with a summer magazine. The media mix is rounded off with attractive photo series about the route. These were taken by various photographers, including Stephan Schacher and Nico Schaerer. The campaign will be used worldwide. All central advertising materials will be translated into German, French, English, Italian, Spanish and Dutch.

Homegate publishes a feng shui book

Homegate is serving as the publisher and, in collaboration with Feng Shui consultant, home stylist, and Homegate.ch expert Barbara Rüttimann, is presenting a Feng Shui home design guide.

In her beginner's guide "cu@home", author Barbara Rüttimann shows that feng shui and modern home styling are not mutually exclusive, but rather complement each other perfectly. The modern and practical guide is accompanied by pictures of real living situations and thus offers an insight into the profitable work on space.

True to the motto "keep it simple", Barbara Rüttimann shows her readers how to give their homes even more individuality with little effort. The book not only introduces the most important basic concepts of feng shui and its application, but also shows the possible applications of Far Eastern philosophy and home styling. With a few tricks, the life force chi will flow gently through your living space almost by itself. At the same time, the guide offers ideas and inspiration on important life topics such as family, partnership, career and success and provides valuable tips on organizing and decluttering the home. "Every change in our living space brings about a change in our lives. This makes it all the more important that we consciously design our four walls," says Barbara Rüttimann with conviction. Originally trained in business administration, she has been supporting private individuals and companies in the real estate sector with feng shui and home styling as well as in classic communication for 15 years.

Daniel Bruckhoff, media spokesman for Homegate.ch, adds: "With the publication of the feng shui guide, we are putting on paper what we have already discussed in many blog posts on Homegate.ch. With the paperback, we want to reach as many interested people as possible and thus make a further contribution to well-being within your own four walls."

From one-time buyer to permanent customer

At the sixth marketing meeting on the topic of "Brand management under value", the focus was on new customer marketing. A study presented shows: 75 percent of all newly acquired customers buy the product only once.

In the representative study by Mediaschneider, Serviceplan and GfK, manufacturer brands were analyzed and evaluated. The comprehensive results were presented on Tuesday at the Widder Hotel in Zurich.

_DSC1777

In front of around 140 guests present at this year's Marketing Meeting, the study on "Brand Management under Value" by Mediaschneider, Serviceplan and GfK was presented. After the welcome by Manfred Strobl (Managing Director Mediaschneider), Peter Haller (Founder and Managing Director Serviceplan Group), Robert Kecskes (Senior Insights Director GfK), Barbara Evans (Managing Director Facit Media Efficiency) and Monika Saeger (Managing Director Serviceplan Group) presented the results.

_DSC1805

Steady loss of customers

44 percent of all manufacturer brands - and the number is rising - are so-called "burnout brands," meaning that they lose more than 30 percent of their regular customers per year. The brands are trying to compensate for these declines with an ever-increasing number of occasional customers: Thus, "Burnout Brands" mostly position themselves via short-term, classical and quantitative instruments and thus appear mainly product- and not brand-oriented. This hectic and inefficient brand management leads to a loss of market share after two years at the latest. What do the other 26 percent of brands, the growing "growth brands," do better?

_DSC1782

Emotions as brand value

"Growth brands", which reach new buyers with a high propensity to repurchase, position themselves with their campaigns in a much more brand value-oriented and emotional way. The most successful among them pursue a consistent value fit at all levels of marketing: They make sure that their campaigns implement their own brand values and are placed in a media environment that matches their emotional brand values. It's not the classic, rational and user-oriented marketing tools that motivate people to buy these days: "Today, these account for only 30 percent of market share success. 70 percent are emotional brand values, but too little emphasis is placed on them," says Peter Haller, CEO and founder of the Serviceplan Group.

_DSC1790

New understanding of target groups

A fundamentally new understanding of target groups is crucial to winning new customers who buy a product more than once. Generalizing characteristics such as age and income are distant from the brand and lead to the definition of irrelevant target groups. Only target groups that are defined according to their buying behavior are effective and brand-specific. Thus, three of them could be defined: "notorious tryers", "serious switchers" and "fixed loyalists". The "serious switchers" are the most interesting in the short and medium term, as they are dissatisfied with their current brand and are looking for a replacement.

Individual target group approach

The three target groups are addressed individually, but they must all be addressed cross-medially and with qualitatively convincing, tailored content, because the three types of buyer have different media consumption behavior. Although TV is the main medium for all three, they prefer different channels and programs. Based on the newly acquired knowledge about the media preferences of the three buyer groups and their differentiated approach, it is possible to plan and invest in a targeted manner.
