Ruf Lanz: Billboard columns turned into milk glasses

Ruf Lanz took Swiss Milk Producers (SMP) by surprise by using Clear Channel’s rotating light columns—and transforming them into a large, rotating milk glass.

The first milk glass has been on display on Schaffhauserstrasse in Zurich since May 18, 2015. Fittingly, right by the Milchbuck stop.

The print and outdoor campaigns of the Swiss Milk Producers come since 2006 from the Ruf Lanz stable. Last winter, the creative agency caused a stir in the ski resorts. There, posters were placed at the cable car stations in just the right way to make it look as if Lovely the dairy cow was pulling the whole cable car (Werbewoche.ch reported). The campaign won several awards - including gold at the 2014 Epica Awards (Werbewoche.ch reported).

Last but not least: Rampensau

If you won't listen, you'll have to learn the hard way: Argentine drivers who ignore parking rules were taught a good lesson.

In Buenos Aires, many drivers apparently park where it is particularly inconvenient for people with walking disabilities: in front of the wheelchair ramps on the sidewalks. Presumably the drivers had a window seat at driving school. Or simply the wrong driving instructor. Driver's School knows better and, with the help of the VML agency, combined the desired learning effect with a viral campaign that suddenly had the whole of Argentina talking about it and has now even made it to Switzerland. A ski jump was built around the incorrectly parked cars in no time at all - for an extreme wheelchair user. Video filmed, ramp dismantled, QR code stuck to the car and there you have a lesson that you won't forget in a hurry. Even as a spectator. It's great! (hae)

Real Time Advertising: Switzerland is catching up

Just a few months ago, advertising spending via real time advertising in Switzerland was still vanishingly small. This changed significantly in the first quarter of 2015. A guest article by Torben Heimann, Improve Digital.

The trend towards automating ad sales is currently also taking hold in Swiss media companies. Management is rethinking and increasingly focusing on efficiency gains and optimizing inventory income through programmatic advertising. Experts estimate that the share of RTA advertising spending in Switzerland today is around 10 percent. By comparison, spending in Germany is currently around 20 percent. And the markets are developing rapidly. For marketers and publishers, this means they can now actively shape the market. Swiss market leader Tamedia is setting a good example: the media company has found its programmatic strategy and implemented it in the company at all levels, from management to the sales department and ad operations. Step by step, Tamedia is expanding its premium programmatic strategy, using programmatic agency budgets and the benefits of holistic inventory optimization. In doing so, Tamedia exclusively offers inventory of Swiss premium pages for sale programmatically - with full transparency. Its successful RTA strategy is a combination of direct sales and automated sales - IAB standard formats to large formats, mobile and video are available. The programmatic channel is thus on par with traditional buying options and offers the advantage of the most accurate targeting. In this way, the company exploits the full potential of its inventory. RTA offers the advantage of putting own campaigns in maximum competition with demand from RTA. At the same time, promised volumes can still be delivered. The publisher can thus secure the highest revenues while offering the highest value to advertisers.

Our forecast for Switzerland: in 2018, more than 50 percent of advertising budgets will flow into programmatic advertising. To support this, however, a number of things still need to happen. More Swiss publishers and marketers, not just the big ones, need to open up to the topic, recognize the revenue potential and consciously find their individual strategy. In addition, the demand side must make good on its intentions and increasingly allocate budgets to programmatic, because the willingness of agencies is essential for the success of RTA. Demand and supply sides must recognize each other's needs, respond to them, and thus grow together as a market. And while technology can automate some tasks and steps, it's important to remember that human input will always be critical. Auction techniques, rule definitions and yield management will continue to require analysts and highly skilled optimizers. Tailor-made, exclusive advertising space offers and integration deals need specialists for sales and processing. Platforms need to be understood, implemented and used according to a commercial strategy and operational efficiency. SSP providers support companies with their consulting services in this transition from traditional ad trading to real-time advertising. Efficient effective marketing through RTA then rewards all parties involved in the end: the advertisers, the publishers and marketers as well as the consumers.

Torben Heimann is Managing Director of Improve Digital, Europe's leading independent provider of real-time advertising technology for publishers. Improve Digital has developed an innovative platform that enables media owners to automate and optimize the monetization of inventory and audiences for all screen formats and across all public and private distribution channels. The company works with more than 250 publishers and media owners worldwide, including Tamedia. Improve Digital expanded its collaboration with the Swiss media company in May, signing an open-ended contract.

Ringier sells Philippine real estate portal

Ringier and the Philippine media company Summit Media are divesting themselves of the online real estate platform Myproperty.ph in the Philippines. The portal is being sold to the international real estate portal Lamudi.

Myproperty.ph was launched in 2010 by Ringier together with the Philippine media company Summit Media. Together with Summit, the portal was very quickly built up into one of the largest classifieds platforms in the country. Currently, around 174,000 properties are traded on the portal. The sale to Lamudi, which operates RE portals in more than 30 countries, is for strategic reasons. Ringier has no other business activities in the Philippines. Lamudi intends to retain both the brand Myproperty.ph as well as its own real estate platform, Lamudi.com.ph, as independent portals after the acquisition.

Gstaad charm offensive in Zurich

«We’re coming to you.» Under this motto, hoteliers from the Gstaad region set off for Zurich on Wednesday to send a personal and charming message of hospitality and quality in this age of social media and fast-paced living.

The aim was to create sympathy, break new ground in tourism marketing and make targeted personal contact with potential guests.

The 29 participants met at the train station in Gstaad at 6.45 am. The secret stars of the event, the two cows belonging to farmer Willi Bach from Saanen, had already been on their way to Zurich for a good hour. Spread over five vehicles and highly motivated, they headed towards the eastern lowlands. The meeting point was the Romantik Hotel Europe in Zurich. The guests were amazed when they saw the two guests from Gstaad, who were rather exotic by city standards, getting out of the cattle truck. After a quick shower and make-up with flower arrangements, the top models from Gstaad were ready to accompany the hoteliers and representatives of Gstaad Saanenland Tourism on their march through the Seefeld district with a cart and Bernese mountain dog.

Passers-by reacted with delight and amusement to the charming demonstration of hospitality and enjoyed the regional specialties, sliced cheese and dried meat on offer.

The focus is on people

"We want to invite our customers out of their everyday lives into our brand world and talk to them in order to get to know their vacation needs even better," says Head of Marketing Reto Tschannen, explaining the hoteliers' motivation for traveling to Zurich's city centre with bag and baggage. "The inspiration for this campaign came from the question of how we can stand out efficiently in times of excessive overstimulation and reach our guests in the best possible way," adds Christian Hoefliger, President of the Gstaad Saanenland Hoteliers' Association. "Because our core competence as hoteliers is and remains people and their needs."

A premiere in more ways than one

The campaign, which will be repeated in Lausanne on May 21, is also linked to the new advertising campaign of the Gstaad Saanenland Hoteliers' Association and Gstaad Saanenland Tourism, which is also a premiere in several respects. Consumers are not being addressed as passive recipients as usual.

Discover vacation experiences in a playful way

The campaign relies on interactive elements and allows customers to participate in an exciting story thanks to a creative and humorous approach. The aim is for them to playfully discover the values behind the Gstaad brand and the range of possible vacation experiences for themselves. Human closeness, warmth and hospitality are the key messages here. "The guest takes center stage and has fun at the same time," Reto Tschannen outlines the core messages. At the same time, the campaign invites people to take part in a virtual search for Tessa the cow, who has escaped from Gstaad farmer Tinu's barn (Gstaad.ch/Tessa). Whoever finds it can win an attractive prize.

Adello: Mobile Advertising in 1st PlaceTP4T1

Advertising on mobile devices works across all industries. Two case studies from Adello demonstrate why smartphones and tablets allow for more creativity than other media formats and how the use of technology impacts the effectiveness of campaigns.

Swiss musician Seven (Sony Music) climbs from 0 to #1 in the album charts, while "The Bachelorette" gives TV channel 3+ the best primetime evening in its history. Both campaigns achieve best results and Adello is responsible for them, both cases have in common the use of the creative templates and the technology of the Swiss mobile advertising company.

Sony Music: Seven

From 0 to 1 in the hit parade: Audio Cube with video integration and connection to iTunes helps the Swiss artist to the most successful album release in his history. The smartphone is not only the most important mp3 player for music, the iTunes music store integrated on it is also the most important sales channel for the music industry. Adello developed a new advertising template for the major label Sony Music, which was used for the first time to promote the 16th album of the Swiss soul artist Seven. In order to sell music, it must be made tangible, which can be optimally staged on the smartphone thanks to the soundtrack and music clip.

Bildschirmfoto-2015-05-20-um-15.31.51
ADELLO_Pressemitteilung_Seven_QR_150520

A swipe across the ad streams the chorus of the current hit single, and the associated video clip starts automatically. In addition to linking to tour dates and tickets, the campaign's primary goal is to generate album sales, which is done directly from the advertising medium thanks to the seamless connection to iTunes. The novel campaign set-up does not miss its target: The album "BackFunkLoveSoul" brings the musician from Aargau the biggest success of his career with position 1 in the official Swiss album charts.

3+: "Bachelorette

Swipe Cube with multi-dimensional calendar storage function, multi video integration and live stream connection gives the channel the best primetime evening in its history. For the launch of the new docu-soap "The Bachelorette", Adello programmed a new type of advertising creation for the private channel 3+, which makes the debut season known to the target group and positions it emotionally by means of video streams directly controlled in the ad unit. A Click to Calendar option also saves all broadcast dates of the eight episodes on the smartphone and automatically reminds viewers of the broadcast of the new episode with a push alert on the home screen on the evening before and the morning of the broadcast day. The Cube also supports "try before buy": a click on the advertising material opens the station's real-time TV signal, with Zattoo acting as the technical partner.

To guarantee maximum relevance and ensure that the content appears correctly in the live stream, the campaign was exclusively synchronized with the TV broadcast. During advertising breaks on the channel, the campaign on mobile was therefore also temporarily interrupted.

Bildschirmfoto-2015-05-20-um-15.36.04
ADELLO_Pressemitteilung_Bachelorette_QR_150520

The combination of these measures also had a big impact, giving the TV station the best primetime evening in its history: In the advertising-relevant target group of 15- to 49-year-olds, a market share of 20.2 percent was achieved, which was twice the reach of SRF. Among 15- to 34-year-olds, the share was as high as 28.6 percent.

Swipe Cube

Both showcases are based on the architecture of the "Pushdown Swipe Cube", a mobile advertising form that Adello already developed in June 2013 and which is now one of the standard ad units in the Swiss mobile advertising market. In addition, Adello has introduced various other advertising innovations such as Autostart Videostitial, Engage Pass or Contractitial.

NZZ.ch becomes faster and more user-friendly

The new NZZ.ch website is faster, tailored to users' needs, and optimized for all devices. Feedback from readers on beta.NZZ.ch played a key role in the development of NZZ.ch.

The new website now fulfills the technical requirements for a series of further improvements, according to a press release issued on Wednesday. Beta.NZZ.ch went online in November (Werbewoche.ch reported). Since then, the NZZ.ch project team has received thousands of valuable feedbacks from the readership, derived improvements from them and implemented them continuously. As of today, Beta.NZZ.ch will now completely replace NZZ.ch. The design of the new website was developed by NZZ's internal product designers in close collaboration with the editorial, technology and marketing departments. The reduced design and the list arrangement of the articles facilitate orientation. Thanks to responsive design, the content is optimally displayed on all end devices - regardless of whether NZZ.ch readers want to quickly find information on their smartphone while waiting at the streetcar stop, scroll through a picture gallery on their tablet at home or get an overview of the day's top topics on their desktop in the office.

Unbenannt-1_59

The project team developed all elements starting from the smallest screen. Only when the solution worked on the smartphone was it transferred to the larger formats. For example, all elements on NZZ.ch are now "touch-friendly", meaning they can be activated not only with a click of the mouse, but also with a tap of the finger on a smartphone or tablet. On NZZ.ch, readers can share articles more easily via social media, and comment functions, blogs and video contributions are now also available for mobile users. In addition, the NZZ.ch website now loads three times faster.

Starting point for further developments

In addition to the visible improvements, significant technological optimizations have been carried out in the background of NZZ.ch, such as the introduction of a new paywall platform. It is now also easier to log in and register. The changeover to the new version is the starting point for a series of further developments in the coming weeks and months. Steven Neubauer, Managing Director of NZZ: "With the new NZZ.ch, we have laid the technological foundations for the agile implementation of new products and functionalities and the further development of the journalistic offering for NZZ customers. Today's changeover is just the beginning. We will continue to work hard on improving usability and content offerings for our readers."

Bildschirmfoto-2015-05-20-um-10.56.37

One example of this is the new "Briefing", which focuses on NZZ.ch is currently in the test phase. The briefing is an up-to-date summary of the news situation and offers the most important information of the day at a glance at any given time. Anita Zielina, Editor-in-Chief of New Products: "The briefing is a self-contained container that summarizes the most important information for the reader in just a few minutes - as briefly as possible and as detailed as necessary. Initial feedback has been very promising."

Third issue of print newspaper: print advertising decisive for purchase decision

47.8 percent of the population finds newspaper ads informative. In the third issue of the print newspaper, the Swiss Media Association and Leo Burnett highlight the importance of this media format for sales.

No less than two thirds of readers keep brochure inserts or take them straight to the store with them when shopping. This makes print advertising indispensable for sales. These and other arguments in favor of print advertising can be read in the third issue of the print newspaper. With the wealth of arguments, the Swiss Media Association underscores how important the leading media genre is for advertisers.

150519_Printzeitung-Cover

This is also the case for Mark N. Backé, Head of Marketing at BMW Switzerland: "Newspaper ads are just as important for BMW as the showroom". BMW invests an above-average amount in print advertising and is gaining further share with this strategy in a declining market. Other articles also highlight the advantages of the trade and special press, present ad campaigns that have won awards from the Art Directors Club, and explain how print advertising can be planned down to the local level.

Zurich Journalism Prize 2015 awarded

Christian Brönnimann (Tages-Anzeiger), Andrea Jeska (NZZ am Sonntag), Manuel Bühlmann and Oliver Wietlisbach (Watson), and Arnold Hottinger (Gesamtwerk) have been awarded the 2015 Zurich Journalism Prize. The awards are each endowed with 10,000 Swiss francs.

This year, the jury of the Zurich Journalism Award honors three contributions that stand out for their linguistic quality, form and impact, as well as the underlying research. Christian Brönnimann receives the prize for his series of articles on the practice of awarding IT contracts at the federal government, which appeared in the Tages-Anzeiger. Andrea Jeska receives the award for a moving reportage from a prison for children and young people in Uganda, which was published by the NZZ am Sonntag. Manuel Bühlmann and Oliver Wietlisbach receive the award for their article on the real-life technical surveillance of a National Council member and his movements, which the authors implemented in multimedia form on the online portal Watson. With the prize for the complete works, the jury honors Arnold Hottinger, who as a long-time correspondent of the NZZ and as an internationally recognized Middle East expert closely followed the events in this troubled region of the world with well-founded reports and analyses.

At the award ceremony, which took place on Tuesday, May 19, 2015, at Kaufleuten Zurich, the jury, chaired by Hannes Britschgi and attended by numerous prominent guests from business, media and politics, honored the five media professionals with one of the most important awards for journalistic texts in Switzerland. Markus Spillmann, former editor-in-chief of the NZZ, delivered the keynote address on the subject of journalism and responsibility. Financial cabaret artist Chin Meyer sparked a satirical flash.

The Zurich Journalism Prize was awarded for the 35th time this year. Each of the four prizes awarded is endowed with 10,000 Swiss francs. In each case, outstanding and groundbreaking work and complete works are honored, regardless of whether they are distributed via a newspaper, magazine or online channel. The award is made possible thanks to contributions and donations from publishers, companies and institutions. The Foundation gratefully acknowledges this support, especially the contributions from Migros, Google, Zürcher Presseverein and Presse- und Medienball.
