Déformation professionelle - Professional diseases in advertising and marketing

Axel Eckstein, Executive Creative Director at Leo Burnett Switzerland, writes in *Werbewoche* about pathological tendencies in advertising and marketing. In the twelfth installment: Client Distemper (procure distemper).

Description

Customer distemper is a viral disease that can occur in companies that purchase services from other companies. The disease is characterized by extreme price sensitivity, accompanied by a greatly reduced ability to perceive quality.

Initial stage

The customer distemper virus from the B2B virus family enters the company via the shareholder value approach and initially infects the purchasing bodies, where it multiplies rapidly. After a few months, the first behavioral abnormalities (savings constraint disorders) towards advertising agencies, such as the sending of price inquiries and confidentiality agreement forms, occur. At the same time, there is a progressive weakening of the marketing apparatus.

Final stage

The company then goes through the actual pitch phase, at the end of which the agency decision is made. The contract is awarded via a reflex form and is awarded precisely when the threshold values specified by the company match the information provided by a provider: Price per unit of idea (semi-finished product), delivery deadline, shelf life of the campaign and liability if the ordered advertising impact does not materialize.

Prophylaxis

The only way to protect yourself is to get vaccinated. For basic immunization, a visit to the marketing department is recommended for young buyers; for older purchasing managers, a visit to a film shoot.

SNK becomes SNK

Scholtysik Niederberger Kraft is now officially called SNK. With the claim "be a better brand", the agency gets to the heart of its positioning.

SNK instead of Scholtysik Niederberger Kraft, three letters instead of 27 - with this simplification, the Zurich branding agency is now officially called what clients, partners and employees have been calling it for years. "SNK" is more memorable, especially for international clients, and at the same time ensures continuity. The "new" name is also accompanied by a sharpening of the positioning.

Changes in society, technology or the market environment mean that brands must constantly question and update themselves with a fresh eye. With the claim "be a better brand," the 30 or so specialists from the fields of brand strategy, brand design, brand communication and brand management get to the heart of how they think about branding and brands. "With "be a better brand" we want to emphasize that it is not simply a matter of being better, but above all of continuously becoming better," explains CEO Oscar Todeschini. "We are convinced that brands become better when they understand the interplay between purpose, design, communication and leadership - this is essential for the success of a company," adds Armin Niederberger. With this attitude, SNK works for companies such as UBS, SIX, Bauwerk, Phonak and Erich Meier, helping them to make their brands better and more successful in the long term.

Andreas Arntzen takes over the management of the new Specialized Media division and becomes a member of the NZZ Media Group's Executive Board.

Frank-Rainer Nitschke, former Head of New Business and member of the Executive Board, will be working more in Germany again for personal reasons, but will continue to be responsible for various projects for the NZZ Media Group.

Media manager Andreas Arntzen is the new Head of Specialist Media and a member of the Executive Board of the NZZ Media Group. He has been working for the NZZ Media Group as an acquisition consultant since October 2014. Andreas Arntzen is one of the most experienced media managers in the German-speaking world. The new Specialized Media division brings together the former specialized media and media-related businesses - including information services and specialist conferences - under a single management. The NZZ Media Group thus now comprises the three business divisions NZZ, Regional Media and Specialized Media. The NZZ Media Group is mainly bundling media activities in the B2B sector in the new Specialized Media division. The Group intends to continue to grow organically and through acquisitions and increasingly exploit cooperation potential. Veit Dengler: "With his many years of experience in the media industry and corporate development, particularly in B2B business, Andreas Arntzen is the ideal person to expand the specialist media in line with the strategy with a focus on publishing."

During this time, he evaluated and adjusted the NZZ Media Group's investment portfolio and helped shape the new business strategy with a focus on publishing. Under his leadership, the media-related business areas contributed more than a third of the operating result last year. For personal reasons, Frank-Rainer Nitschke has decided to return to working more in Germany. However, he will continue to manage various projects for the NZZ Media Group, as detailed in a press release. Veit Dengler: "Frank-Rainer Nitschke has built up the New Business division, aligned it with our strategy and managed it very successfully. He has thus created an excellent basis for growth in the new specialist media division."

SRF plans new foreign magazine

Schweizer Radio und Fernsehen is launching a foreign magazine show, "#SRF global", in fall 2015. It will be hosted by Florian Inhauser.

Together with SRF correspondents, he takes up a current foreign topic once a month. Under the direction of presenter Florian Inhauser, SRF's foreign correspondents explain the background to crises, latent current hotspots and social and political problems in the world's regions. The correspondents will be connected from their respective regions.

The 30-minute program focuses on one topic at a time. The hashtag in the name of the program refers to the special focus of "#SRF global". The magazine does not provide information from the perspective of politicians and statesmen, but from the perspective of the population or media users. Current events are therefore explored in depth on the basis of debates in social networks.

#SRF global" can be seen once a month late on Tuesday evenings at 11.30 p.m. on SRF 1 - for the first time on Tuesday, September 22, 2015. According to SRF, the foreign magazine will be available online beforehand on the same day.

Last but not least: Senior citizens to help BBC out of budget hole

The BBC is facing a budget shortfall of around 725 million pounds due to the exemption from the license fee for over-75s. The senior citizens are now supposed to cushion this.

Senior citizens could cushion the budget gap with voluntary fee payments. This was reported by The Guardian according to Pressetext.com. The BBC's head of strategy, James Heath, is reported to have said: "We will offer eligible households the opportunity to voluntarily pay TV license fees to contribute to the cost of BBC services".

So, let's start again: senior citizens have been exempt from fees since 2001. Now the BBC wants to ask them to make voluntary contributions. However, the budget shortfall of around 725 million pounds resulting from the fee exemption would not be covered even by senior citizens who are happy to donate. According to Heath, in the next charter period from 2017, "further tough decisions will have to be made and the BBC will have to be simplified". This means that upstream services could fall victim to the cost-cutting pen - a very good prerequisite for relying on donating senior citizens. (uma)

Divio develops website for Büro Züri

Starting immediately, individuals and teams can book workspaces for free on Bahnhofstrasse in the heart of Zurich. The website was developed in collaboration with the Zurich-based web agency Divio.

Zürcher Kantonalbank renovated its headquarters on Zurich's Bahnhofstrasse from top to bottom. In the process, part of the space was converted into the Züri office. This offer makes it possible to use functionally high-quality and modern workplaces free of charge. Büro Züri is intended to inspire individuals and teams to come up with new innovations and ideas.

In line with the specifications of the corporate design and corporate image for Büro Züri, the Zurich web agency Divio developed the new Website. In close collaboration, a modern design was created that conveys impressions of Büro Züri and at the same time makes it easy to book the desired workstation online.

The site stands out especially for its simple and reduced design. Divio designed the site with modern features and implemented it on the latest standards of Bootstrap, the widely used framework for HTML, CSS and JS. As a result, the team achieved a responsive mobile view and embedded additional effects such as a video in the header or a parallax effect, for example. With the parallax effect, the foreground scrolls faster than the background, creating an engaging user experience. However, the core and most important function of the website is the booking process for the workstations. By means of login and in just a few steps, seats can be reserved for specific times.
