Expert survey: Public service in need of reform

Switzerland is also dependent on an efficient public service in the media sector, but reforms are indispensable. It is unlikely that this will lead to major upheavals. However, SRG must be prepared for restrictions.

This is shown by Publicom's new expert survey. The Delphinarium experts are obviously convinced that public broadcasting has a right to exist even under today's media conditions, as it fulfills important functions that the market cannot provide. However, a clear majority is of the opinion that there is a need for reform. Quite obviously, the experts question the role of SRG and its performance mandate. However, they are cautious about the scope of the reforms and are guided by what is politically feasible. Accordingly, the vast majority believe that the SRG's performance mandates would be slightly adjusted in view of the 2018 relicensing. However, they consider radical intervention in the dual system to be unlikely.

Restrictions for SRG and more transparency

The DELPHInarium expects concrete changes most likely in the financial transparency of the SRG. SRG has already announced initial measures on this point. The DELPHInarium also sees a certain chance of a political redefinition of the public service and a restriction of the SRG offering on the Internet, while a reduction in programming already seems relatively unlikely - as does the assumption that the organizational structure of the SRG would change significantly. According to Delphinarium experts, a complete ban on advertising for SRG, as demanded by publishers in the aftermath of the June 14 vote, is also unlikely to be realized.

Under the term Delphinarium, Publicom, which specializes in media research and consulting, publishes the results of a survey of experts twice a year. The panel includes forty experts from leading media companies as well as representatives from advertising, media journalism, communications science and corporate communications.

Evoq: Campaign platform for Swissmem

To highlight to the Swiss public the importance of the bilateral agreements for the domestic machinery, electrical, and metal industries, Swissmem, as the umbrella organization, is launching a communication campaign.

We-stay-successful.ch was launched at the Swissmem Industry Day and encourages people to inform themselves about the topic of bilateral agreements with its own, independent identity. Swiss entrepreneurs have their say in numerous video statements, and the "fact check" sets the record straight on common assertions, fears and commonplace wisdom.

In parallel to the new name and independent online presence, Evoq also implemented other communication measures, such as various materials for the Swissmem Industry Day and the brochure on the results of the Bakbasel study. Eye-catchingly presented, the study results are impressive, and with various content links to the online offering, the publication arouses additional interest.

In addition to the campaign platform and the study, Evoq also designed various accompanying measures such as flyers, badges, and leaflets. "The Evoq team helped us to launch a high-quality campaign in a very short period of time," says Corinne Mercedes Stucki, project manager at Swissmem. "We are convinced that thanks to Evoq's creative ideas, high level of commitment, and flexibility, we will succeed in demonstrating the great importance of the bilateral agreements to a broad population. The cooperation with Evoq has become an important building block for us to secure the bilateral path and thus the success of the industry."

Uproar over Merkel's handling of crying refugee girl

Heated debates over an emotional moment in German Chancellor Angela Merkel’s otherwise rather sober public dialogue: Merkel’s reaction to a crying refugee girl has caused quite a stir and sparked controversial discussions, especially online.

The Chancellor discussed various topics such as climate protection, equal rights and refugee policy with 29 young people at a school center in Rostock. Merkel spent several minutes talking to young Reem, who has been living in Germany for four years. The young girl also described her fear of deportation: her family had "had a hard time because we were about to be deported." She doesn't know what her future looks like. She wanted to study. Merkel remained matter-of-fact and pointed out above all that asylum procedures needed to be speeded up until a decision was made. As the conversation drew to a close, young Reem finally began to cry. Merkel faltered briefly and then approached the girl, stroked her head and placed a reassuring hand on her shoulder.

Debates in social networks

"You did a great job," said the Chancellor at first. The moderator of the event interjected at that moment that he did not believe "that it was about prima-facing, but that it was of course a very stressful situation", to which Merkel replied: "I know that it is a stressful situation. That's why I would still like to give her a pat." This sentence and Merkel's reaction sparked heated debate on social media. Numerous people commented on the Chancellor's behavior under the hashtag #merkelstreichelt. Her treatment of the girl was criticized as insensitive. But others also defended Merkel. (SDA)

Hot summer: This is what Switzerland is looking for on Google

Switzerland is sweltering, and it looks like it’s shaping up to be a record-breaking summer. To mark the occasion, Google Switzerland is presenting the most-searched terms related to the heat wave.

The search terms were collected using Google Trends. Google Trends is a public tool that can be used to track the popularity of individual search terms over a selected period of time. About "Trends in search queries" you can quickly find out what Switzerland is currently looking for and has been looking for in recent days.

When it comes to what temperatures the thermometer shows, the people of Bern are the best informed. They search for temperature and weather most frequently on Google. In French-speaking Switzerland, Vaud residents in particular search for the current temperature. The Badi pros in German-speaking Switzerland come from Aargau, where the term Badi was searched for the most. The equivalent term in French-speaking Switzerland - piscine - was searched for the most by the people of Valais.

Top 5 search terms for the heatwave on Google:

Badi
Fan
Air conditioner
Sun cream
Heat-free

But it doesn't always have to be the swimming pool, the cool Swiss waters are also very popular at the moment. The Rhine is by far the most popular place for the Swiss to jump in, as is the Aare. When it comes to lakes, Lake Constance is the most popular. With Lake Thun and Lake Walen, two lakes make it into the top 5 most popular lakes, which currently also offer spectators a cultural spectacle on their respective lake stages.

Top 5 most searched rivers during the heatwave:

Rhine
Aare
Inn
Rhone
Limmat

Top 5 most popular lakes during the heatwave:

Lake Constance
Lake Zurich
Lake Thun
Lake Lucerne
Lake Walen

Searches for the foods listed below have increased significantly compared to spring. It is not really surprising that ice cream tops this list. Exotic is in second place, the easily digestible couscous seems to be very popular with the Swiss at the moment.

Top 4 most popular foods during the heatwave:

Ice cream
Couscous
Zucchini
Elderflower syrup

Just like the heat, summer also includes a few spoilsports. Just in time for the start of the vacations in many cantons, searches for traffic jams are also on the rise. And the most frequently searched spoilsports of the current hot summer show that extreme heat leads to headaches for people and storms in nature.

Most wanted spoilsport of the summer heat:

Top position for food industry

With 39.6 million gross Swiss francs, the food industry leads the industry ranking in June, even if it is somewhat more defensive in terms of advertising than in the previous year (-3.2 percent). Sunshine in the leisure industry

Summer is here and the leisure, hospitality and tourism sector is advertising strongly. With an increase of 24.3 percent compared to the previous year, advertising pressure of 26.7 million gross Swiss francs was generated. McDonald's restaurants are once again at the top of the list of advertised products in this sector. Around 2.6 million gross francs were invested in advertising (+14.5 percent PY). This puts McDonald's restaurants in second place in the top 10 most advertised products across all sectors. The advertising drum was also beaten for Valais Tourism. With an advertising print of around 2 million gross francs, advertising expenditure was increased by 121.5 percent compared to the same month last year. This significant increase is also noticeable in the top 10 most advertised products across all sectors. Here, Tourism Valais ranks fifth.

Growing advertising pressure in telecommunications

Swisscom, Salt and Co. are putting on the advertising pressure: In June, the telecommunications sector recorded advertising print of 22.6 million gross Swiss francs, an increase of 27.7 percent compared with the same month last year. Swisscom leads the ranking of advertisers with an advertising print of 8.2 million gross francs. Salt (4.1 million gross francs) ranks second. The two advertisers almost doubled their advertising spend compared to the previous year: Swisscom increased its advertising print by 90.6 percent and Salt by 83.5 percent compared to the same month last year. Apple Switzerland also showed a considerable increase in advertising pressure. Advertising spend was increased by 421.7 percent year-on-year. This is partly due to the sales launch of the Apple Watch in Switzerland. Around 1.4 million gross Swiss francs were invested in advertising, which took place exclusively on TV in June.

Last but not least: Too many monkeys spoil the kitchen

Ikea set up a fully furnished kitchen in the jungle, gave it to the monkeys and captured the whole thing in a TV commercial.

The agency Mother London wanted to use the idea to remind people that the kitchen should be an exuberant, joyful playground: "Rediscover the Joy of the Kitchen," is the claim. The capuchin, howler and spider monkeys do the job as protagonists perfectly. They live in the Jaguar Rescue Center in Costa Rica. The center provides shelter for animals in need, rehabilitates them and releases them back into the wild. The monkeys spend their days in the open jungle and return to the center in the evening to sleep. In the rainforest, they go about the activities of normal monkeys - when they're not running into an Ikea kitchen. (hae)

Google competes with Apple with Bluetooth beacon "Eddystone"

Google is entering the market for Bluetooth transmitters, which enable innovative navigation solutions and are used for promotional campaigns by restaurants and stores.

The "Eddystone" beacon system, named after the famous British lighthouse off the coast of Cornwall, was presented on the Google blog for software developers. The Bluetooth transmitters ("beacons") spread radio signals that are picked up by smartphones and processed in apps. Apple introduced its "iBeacons" standard two years ago, which is used in large baseball stadiums in the USA, for example, to navigate visitors to their seats or to the fan store. Retailers such as Macy's or restaurant chains such as McDonald's and Starbucks use the beacons to alert customers to special offers or other promotions. In contrast to Apple, Google publishes its beacon software under an open source license, thus enabling it to be used on various platforms. While the Apple solution essentially consists of transmitting a specific serial number (UUID), the Google solution can also transmit web addresses (URLs). This allows advertisements or information to be displayed in the web browser without users having to install an app to utilize the beacon signals. (SDA)

SRF commentator Dani Kern and pundit Gürkan Sermeter will accompany the match at the microphone. As in 2014/15, Schweizer Radio und Fernsehen will be broadcasting 36 live matches in the new season. Each team will be shown at least once at home and away. "sportaktuell", "sportpanorama" and "sportradio" will also provide comprehensive coverage of the Super League. Beni Huggel also on board in the Super League

Beni Huggel, SRF's Champions League pundit, will also be back in the Super League in the future. The Basel native on his new role: "I'm delighted to be back as a co-commentator and to be able to comment on the action on the pitch." Beni Huggel replaces Ludovic Magnin, who has given up his co-commentator job for family reasons: "The decision was anything but easy for me. I really enjoyed commentating and had a great time with my SRF colleagues. But my family is very important to me, and as a father of four children I want to take my private commitments seriously and devote my free time entirely to them," says Magnin about his decision.

Gürkan Sermeter and Christoph Spycher will continue to be part of the Super League co-commentary team and can be seen and heard alternately.

Ruf Lanz: Jewelry prevention subject for Suva

Ruf Lanz has developed a new prevention campaign for Suva’s Suvaliv brand. To promote the use of bicycle helmets, the creative team designed a visual that highlights the benefits of wearing a bicycle helmet through a clever analogy.

Because a bicycle helmet proves to be very valuable in the event of an accident. Since 2002, the Suvaliv prevention campaigns have borne Ruf Lanz's signature. With success: in several studies, Suvaliv has been able to prove that every franc invested in prevention saves at least two francs in insurance payments. Added to this is the human suffering that can be prevented. Along the way, Suvaliv's prevention campaigns keep winning prestigious awards - most recently the Evergreen of the Art Directors Club Switzerland in April 2015.
