Alfons Spirig new major shareholder of Radio Central and Sunshine Radio

Alfons Spirig has acquired the radio shares of Triner Medien Holding and now owns approximately 90 percent of the shares in Radio Central and Sunshine.

The share purchase is related to the succession plan of the publisher of the Boten der Urschweiz, Hugo Triner, who wanted to hand over the strategic co-responsibility for the two radios with his retirement and enable clear majority conditions.

DSC03994

In 1989, Hugo Triner founded Radio Schwyz together with other local newspaper publishers from Schwyz. The name was taken over by the initiators of a competing project, who had also applied for the license. They were integrated as minority shareholders. Alfons Spirig, who had already played a decisive role in the development of Radio Sunshine as editor-in-chief five years earlier, was chosen as managing director. Although Radio Central was the last radio station in Central Switzerland to start, Alfons Spirig and his motivated team succeeded in becoming the radio station with the largest audience in Central Switzerland. Success factors were an attractive music and information concept, many long-term employees, the expansion of the broadcast area and the name change. In 2012, Bakom commissioned a study that certified Radio Central as the most regional radio station, i.e. with the most regional content. In the process, 38 radios were examined for their regionality. In 2002, Radio Central bought Radio Eviva. In 2012, Radio Sunshine was acquired, which resulted in the sale of Radio Eviva due to the RTV law. Today, Radio Central and Radio Sunshine employ around 47 people working in the main studio in Rotkreuz and in Lucerne. Radio Central reaches around 210,000 listeners daily, Radio Sunshine 115,000. Radio Central is the fourth largest local radio station in Switzerland.

In the future, Hugo Triner will concentrate on the board of directors of his traditional companies (newspaper and printing house) or the presidency of the Triner Media Foundation. Before the sale, he had held around 40 percent of the shares in Radio Central and Sunshine, the same as Alfons Spirig.

To the point: You're quite a brand!

"You're such a brand!" my mother used to exclaim when I went a little too far again - and came within a hair's breadth of a major disaster, or she of a huge dose of trouble.

My mom thus expressed how relieved she was about the uninjurious outcome of the matter - and how little my action matched her image of me, the "Friederike brand".

The dictionary explains a little more matter-of-factly that people say "You're a brand" when a person behaves strangely. The other day, Mom's exclamation came back to me, or more precisely, to my tongue. I almost exclaimed "You're a brand!" myself - in a classy watch boutique on Zurich's Bahnhofstrasse. Because some things there struck me as very strange. Above all, it was not at all compatible with the image I had had of the brand up to that point. With foreseeable consequences.

But from the beginning: The summer vacations are the right time to strap the plastic alarm clock to the wrist again and to give the valuable life stage companion watch for revision. My dear husband owns a Schaffhausen gem, I'm more into George Clooney. After our vacations, it was up to me to catch up with our gems again.

First I walked past Clooney. The heavy door of the boutique on Bahnhofstrasse was opened for me by a tiny Chinese woman so quickly that the breeze refreshed me wonderfully. Already a second lady hurried to meet me, who, after I had sunk into the comfortable leather seat, floated away with my pick-up slip and was back again in a flash. Since I didn't want to put on the piece of jewelry, which had been polished to a high gloss again, because of a competitor on my wrist, the lady wrapped it in a red, embroidered velvet case and dismissed me with "Thank you Mrs. Heinrich, have a nice day Mrs. Heinrich" into the summer heat. I would not have to pay the bill - after all, I had received a CT for a higher three-digit amount. That was included in the service. All that was missing was a snappy Nespresso and a foot massage. And perhaps a wink from George.

Delighted, I floated to the next watch boutique, full of expectation of what would be offered to me there. Perhaps a foot massage after all? One price class higher equals one class better?

I stood in front of the door and saw the bouncer strolling up and down inside. Me, sweating behind glass, he did not dignify a glance. I took a deep breath and put my hand on the door handle - the gentleman continued to walk up and down. So I pushed the door open. The gentleman let it happen, his hands folded behind his back. He said "Grüezi" artfully and looked at me expectantly. I wanted to pick up a watch, I almost apologized for disturbing him. The gentleman said nothing, but waved a man in a white coat from offstage. The dentist? "Yes?" the latter spoke. I held out to him one of the many pieces of silver-stamped paper that had been sent to us. His response, "No." I was beginning to get a little annoyed. I pressed the whole pack into his hand: "I'm sure you'll find what you need here."

He nodded briefly and disappeared behind a heavy dark door with a super security lock. I stood there. There were enough chairs, but no one wanted to have anything to do with me. So I continued to stand, the gentleman behind the door strolling. I felt stupid. To distract myself from this feeling, I looked at the clocks in the glass cases. Nobody was interested in me. The dentist came back, "Like this!" He slammed the clock on the table. I was allowed to sit down. "I'd still like to have the bracelet changed," I said. "That's possible," he said. "Pretty great, congratulations!", I thought and said "yes please". Again, it took him forever to return with the piece of leather, which, as it turned out, cost about the same as the overhaul at George's, which I hadn't had to pay for.

As I slid my card into the reader to pay the total amount for which we could have bought 37 Pop Swatches, the dentist barked at me, "Hold it, we don't do this fast!" "Sorry," I heard myself say, thinking, "you stupid cow, why do you put up with this?!" After all, I knew I was near the end of this shameful performance and just wanted to get out of the store. Oh, said the dentist, with the Böxli, by the way, they had delivery problems, whether I wanted to kill the clock immediately. Exgüsi, it is a men's watch. Moreover, I already have one on my wrist. Well then, he could wrap it up a bit for me.

Finally, I received a package: my husband's good watch, highly polished and ticking wildly, in a piece of bubble wrap. I asked him if he could put some tape around it, I said with an ironic undertone. Unmoved, I also received this service, of course free of charge.

Shortly after this experience, I read that screams alert the fear center in the brain. And I wondered whether there is also an alarm center for brands, where all the bells ring if someone damages the brand properly. In any case, if I ever have the embarrassment of buying a watch again - for our boys' confirmation or for our godchildren, of whom we have a few - I have instructed the bells in my brain to make a big fuss if I even consider buying a Schaffhausen product. Because some things are preserved far into the next generation.

After profit slump: Goldbach gains again

After the profit dip in 2014 due to the costly exit from loss-making businesses, the Goldbach Group was able to improve earnings again in the first half of 2015. Sales and profit increased significantly.

Sales grew by 4.5 percent to 226.8 million Swiss francs, the company announced on Friday. Operating profit (EBIT) improved by 9.2 percent to 10.7 million francs. Below the line, Goldbach Group earned 2.4 million francs. This is 75 percent more than in the same period last year, helped here by an extraordinary gain. Advertising Marketing Switzerland, which is the Group's largest business segment, increased sales by 8.5 percent to 197.8 million Swiss francs. "We managed strong single-digit percentage growth in TV in particular and were also able to launch D8, a new TV station in French-speaking Switzerland," Goldbach CEO Michi Frank said in a conference call. The radio business also developed very positively with an increase of 26 percent. The online business, however, is struggling: The loss of sales in the display segment could not be fully compensated by low single-digit growth in the video segment.

Germany targets break-even point for 2016

In advertising marketing in Poland and Austria, sales declined by 22.4 percent to CHF 9.6 million. The business in Germany, which is in the process of being built up, achieved sales of CHF 1.4 million for the first time, but also posted an operating loss before depreciation and amortization (EBITDA) of CHF 1.8 million. Next year, the company aims to break even in Germany, Frank said. The direct-to-customer business, which is grouped under Marketing Services, saw a 22.2 percent drop in sales to 19.1 million and an operating loss. For the full year, sales in the continuing business are expected to grow in the low single-digit percentage range. Net profit is expected to at least double, the company added.

Serenity in the face of new competition

Frank was coy about the new competition in advertising marketing from the joint venture announced last Monday between Ringier, Swisscom and SRG: "We will be watching this development very closely. I don't think we need to change our strategy. We believe we are well positioned." The question, however, is what happens to the data in a company that is nevertheless majority-controlled by the state, Frank said, "Here, we would like the same opportunities to get the data. That's a very important point for us." (SDA)

Scaglione's my105 now also via DAB+

Three months after the launch of my105, the first interactive streaming platform, media entrepreneur Giuseppe Scaglione is expanding its audience: Starting August 27, my105 will also be available on DAB+—with programming produced specifically for the platform.

DAB+ is available almost everywhere in Switzerland, with over two million devices already sold since the digital radio network went live. This makes Switzerland one of the countries with the highest DAB density of all. In a few days, the network will have one more program: the first interactive streaming platform my105 will be available via DAB+. According to the press release, founder Giuseppe Scaglione is fulfilling the wishes of many listeners who wanted my105 on DAB+ as well.

Bild_my105-DAB

However, my105 will not simply switch to one of the existing eight channels on DAB+, but will produce its own program specially designed for DAB broadcasting: "my105 Original". According to Giuseppe Scaglione, this will showcase the diversity of the "my105" channels and be strongly oriented towards musical innovations. "We don't see DAB broadcasting as a competitor or replacement for the streaming platform, but as an ideal digital supplement. The DAB+ program is the best advertisement for our streaming platform."

Bild_Giuseppe-Scaglione_0

With the expansion of programming to DAB+, my105 is focusing exclusively and consistently on digital distribution channels. "We not only want to revitalize the streaming market, but also shake up the radio scene once again," says Scaglione, "this will be good for the industry." For the media entrepreneur, the launch of his program on the digital radio network is also a return. "We are looking forward to hearing again from radio producers who have already shown us how to successfully inspire young listeners with DAB+," says Rolf Schurter, Managing Director of Swissmediacast, the DAB+ operating company.

Platform consolidates its position in the Swiss market

Since the launch of my105 On May 28, listeners will have access to eight channels with different music genres. The simple user interface, playlist voting and the fact that the music is compiled by music editors and not by algorithms are already proving very popular with Swiss users. According to Giuseppe Scaglione, the move to DAB distribution will also help my105 to consolidate its position as a Swiss platform. "This will set us even further apart from international streaming platforms and underline our Swissness."

KSP: Image campaign for the Swiss magazine Schweizer Illustrierte

Following in the footsteps of Caminada, Ogi, and others: KSP has created a branding campaign to mark the launch of the «new» Schweizer Illustrierte.

pascale-bruderer

Schweizer Illustrierte is now published as a magazine for the weekend. Every Friday and with a new layout. The editorial offering will be expanded to include articles with a high utility value. In the future, more weekend and excursion tips for the whole family will be offered, as well as background stories on Swiss personalities and everyday heroes.

For the launch, an image campaign was developed together with KSP. With the claim "My Switzerland," the core message is communicated through various measures. Shootings took place throughout the country with Swiss personalities from various areas of society. At locations chosen by the protagonists themselves and which stand for "their Switzerland". Shots of Andreas Caminada, Dario Cologna, Francine Jordi, Adolf Ogi, Dominique Gisin and Pascale Bruderer feature personalities from the worlds of gastronomy, music, sports and politics.

Shots by photographer David Birri were used to create the subjects that serve as the platform for the image campaign. The shoots were recorded with short clips in the form of making-ofs and in-depth interviews. In them, the protagonists reveal what they personally associate with Switzerland and Schweizer Illustrierte. And they do so where they feel most at home.

Tamedia with lower sales and lower EBIT due to advertising decline

Dwindling advertising revenues pushed down the revenues of the Tamedia media group in the first half of the year. Even revenues from the digital business, which is gaining strongly in importance, were unable to make up for the losses.

Tamedia was particularly troubled by the fact that, in addition to the decline in advertising revenues caused by structural change, the advertising business was also adversely affected by economic factors. At a conference call, Tamedia CEO Christoph Tonini illustrated this with the particularly high revenue declines that occurred with a slight delay to the Swiss franc shock in April and May.

In total, the media group recorded an increase in sales of CHF 530.7 million.
As sales fell, so did operating profit (EBIT), down 5.2 percent to 72.4 million Swiss francs. At 71.6 million Swiss francs, the bottom line was more than 20 percent higher than a year ago. However, this increase in profit is due in particular to gains from the sale of the stake in the French-speaking Swiss kiosk operator Naville and the Winterthur Stadtanzeiger, according to the media release.

Tamedia was hit hardest by the decline in advertising in the paid newspapers (Regional Publishing division). Sales there fell by 7.3 percent, while the division's profit fell by 12.8 percent, including depreciation and amortization. In the future, the business segment may be given some breathing room by the acquisition of further printing contracts - the Neue Zürcher Zeitung, for example, has recently been printed by Tamedia - as well as growing revenues from online sites thanks to rising advertising volumes and payment barriers.

Tamedia also reported a 5.8 percent decline in revenues from its Publizistik National division, which includes commuter newspapers and their websites as well as magazines and weekly newspapers, due to the declining advertising market. This decline was mainly due to the downturn in the advertising market for magazines and the Sunday press, it said on Thursday. Earnings in this division were also down.

Central advertising marketing

The Zurich media group saw an upswing only in its digital business, i.e. in those offerings that are purely commercial in nature and do not contain any journalistic content. The real estate portal Homegate, the Internet television service Zattoo, the ticket seller Starticket, and a dozen other online offerings generated 8.9 percent more revenue in the first half of the year than in the same period last year. The division's profit even rose by more than a quarter.

Around 20 percent of Tamedia's sales and over 27 percent of its operating profit now come from the digital division. In addition, Tamedia generates a further 6 percent of sales and around 9 percent of profits with its publishing offerings on the Internet. However, as of this year, this will be credited to the two publishing divisions.

In order to better market the advertising opportunities of digital media in the future and also to be able to evaluate the existing user data, Tamedia will reorganize advertising sales, which are currently still located with the individual media, by 2017 at the latest.

For this purpose, the publishing business will now be divided into two divisions: Advertising & Commuter Media and Paid Media. The first division will be headed by Marcel Kohler, who currently heads the 20 Minuten Group, while the second will be headed by Serge Reymond, who is currently responsible for Tamedia's media titles in French-speaking Switzerland, among other things. Federal Council wants transparency on costs of SRG broadcasts

SRG plans to disclose the cost of each program in the future. The company has announced this. Now it is set to be required to do so: The Federal Council is asking Parliament to adopt a motion by Christian Wasserfallen (FDP/BE).

In its response to the motion published on Thursday, the Federal Council writes that it has noted with satisfaction that the SRG intends to publish information about broadcasts in future on its own initiative, following the example of the German ZDF. It is generally in favor of cost transparency and is also prepared to include the reporting obligation demanded by the motion when the SRG license is reissued, writes the Federal Council.

Wasserfallen is calling on SRG to provide detailed information on the use of fee money in its annual report - with comprehensive cost accounting by program, sector and broadcaster.

In its response, the Federal Council points out that the SRG already goes beyond its legal obligations to present operating costs per channel as well as costs for program content, in-house and third-party productions, distribution, lobbying and personnel in its annual report. (SDA)

New campaign against pickpocketing and trick theft

With «Be Mindful,» the Zurich City Police is launching a multi-year campaign against pickpocketing and con artist thefts. The prevention campaign is primarily intended to raise awareness and encourage personal responsibility.

An open handbag, a brief moment of carelessness and your wallet or cell phone is missing. An average of 15 passers-by are robbed every day in the city of Zurich, as the Zurich city police reported on Thursday. Thanks to various prevention and investigation measures by the police, the number of crimes has already been reduced slightly over the past year. The city police now want to further reduce the number of these thefts with the "be careful" campaign.

The city police call for a healthy distrust of intrusive strangers. It advises people to carry as little cash and valuables as possible and, if possible, to carry them concealed. The utmost attention is required in crowds, at bus stops and in public transport vehicles as well as in department stores and restaurants.

Posters, flyers, stickers and advertisements as well as the website are used as means of communication. Sei-achtsam.ch used. A competition is designed to encourage the public to visit the website. The campaign will run until the end of 2017 (SDA).
