Sizmek: New Figures on Video Advertising

Sizmek Video Index 2015: In-stream video advertising continues to gain popularity—but only 18 percent of advertisers who use in-stream video in their campaigns combine it with rich media formats.

Sizmek, a provider of an open ad management platform for multiscreen campaigns, has released new figures on the state of video advertising. The 2015 Video Index describes the general global trends in video advertising and highlights video marketing trends across various consumer goods industries. The report’s analysts highlight one key finding: Advertisers are still far from fully leveraging the potential of connected digital video marketing campaigns. Of the 4,000 advertisers who ran video or rich media ads within the last three years, only 18 percent used both formats simultaneously. The report analyzed video ads from the first half of 2013, 2014, and 2015, revealing that video is generally being used more extensively in marketing strategies to reach audiences: From 2013 to 2015, there was an increase in digital ads featuring video from 9 to 15 percent—a 40 percent growth in just two years.

«Video has become an extraordinarily important medium for brands, and today, marketing professionals can choose from many different formats, such as a more passive in-stream video or an engaging rich-media format that includes video. The range of options has never been as wide as it is today,» confirms Andy Kahl, Director of Research at Sizmek. «And although more and more advertisers are discovering the power of video, many of them are only now learning how to implement and integrate different formats into a successful digital advertising strategy. There is still a great deal of untapped potential for reaching new and existing target audiences with content beyond simply repurposed TV commercials.»

The most important results at a glance:

– In the first half of 2015, the video ad start rate was measured at 62.5 percent. In the first half of 2013, by contrast, it was only 40.5 percent.

startraten

– The consumer goods, entertainment, and automotive industries use video ads most frequently in their campaigns (accounting for 22, 20, and 10 percent, respectively, of all video ads served).

anteil

– There is still untapped potential for video in rich media advertising, as only 11 percent of all ads served in 2015 were rich media. And of those rich media ads, only 5 percent included a video.

anteil-2

– While the EMEA region has seen its highest growth since 2013 (160 percent), North America remains the leader in video usage in 2015, at 52 percent. The APAC region follows with just under 50 percent.

SDV Award 2016: The advertising of the future is entertainment

Interactive marketing is important, and it’s becoming increasingly so. Those who master this discipline best today will not only succeed at the 2016 SDV Award, but will also shape the future of advertising. Campaigns can be submitted through the end of January 2016.

Submissions received before the end of November will now receive a 10 percent discount. *Werbewoche* is once again the media partner for the SDV Awards in 2016.

Over the past decade, new technologies and the rise of social media have multiplied the opportunities for interaction between companies and customers. Effective dialogue marketing capitalizes on these opportunities: it fosters conversations shaped by consumers, thereby bringing them closer to the company or brand. Today, customers can easily voice their concerns on Twitter, help shape new products on Facebook, and rate customer service via text message. This trend clearly shows that the advertising of the future is entertainment.

Through the Ages

The 2016 Swiss Dialog Marketing Award aims to recognize campaigns that are already masterfully bringing the future forward today. Awards will be presented in a total of 23 categories—up from 18 last year. The categories are now divided into three sections: Media, Industry, and Special categories. In the Media division, which comprises nine categories, awards in gold, silver, and bronze will continue to be presented as before. In the other two divisions, one award will be presented per category.

Media categories

In the first category, digital measures are combined with traditional forms of advertising. These will undoubtedly continue to be an important aspect of interactive marketing even in a technology-driven future. «B2C Mailing (2D) over 100,000 copies,' »B2C Mailing (2D) up to 100,000 copies,« 'B2B Mailing (2D),» 3D Mailing (B2B & B2C), «Printed, non-personalized campaigns» and «ambient campaigns» stand side by side here with the newer advertising disciplines «multichannel,» «digital: email marketing / landing page / newsletter,» and «digital: mobile marketing, including apps.».

Industry categories

This category is divided into six subcategories. One of them is «Campaigns for Nonprofit Organizations & Prevention»; advertising initiatives that foster dialogue are indispensable tools here for fundraising and raising awareness. An award is presented in this category, as well as for «Campaigns for Financial Service Providers,» «Campaigns for Retail,» «Campaigns in the Automotive Industry,» «Campaigns in the Telecommunications Industry,» and «Campaigns in the Media Industry.».

Special categories

The special categories encompass eight disciplines, including the SDV Junior Award and the Post Prize. In the «International» category, entries from foreign agencies can earn fame and recognition. «Creative Use of Data,» on the other hand, is a newly created category that recognizes initiatives or campaigns that spark dialogue and make particularly effective use of data and database technologies. The other categories are tried-and-true: «Customer Loyalty Programs,» «Craft: Art Direction,» «Craft: Production,» and «Craft: Copy.».

SDV Junior Award

Once again this year, the SDV Junior Award will be presented to young, up-and-coming talents who will shape the industry in the coming years and decades. In addition, the 2016 winners will have the opportunity to design the presentation for the upcoming SDV Award. This year’s winners were Vasco Bickel (graphic designer) and Anouk Karrer (junior copywriter/concept developer). Karrer produced the work in collaboration with Lukas Binggeli (graphic design) at the Maxomedia agency. As in previous years, the SDV Junior Award is sponsored by the Zurich University of Applied Sciences (ZHAW).

Fair Judging System

The jury for the upcoming SDV Awards is made up of 20 experienced advertising and marketing experts. These visionaries are led by Dr. Christian Huldi. The judging process, which was introduced last year, is undoubtedly forward-thinking. The dual judging system gives equal weight to creativity and success. In the first round of judging, one half of the jury evaluates exclusively the creative merit and execution of the submission. The other half, on the other hand, focuses entirely on the campaign’s effectiveness—that is, its strategy and results. Only in the second round does the entire jury evaluate all remaining entries based on both creativity and effectiveness.

Apply now!

Anyone involved in dialogue marketing knows this: If you don’t take action, you won’t get a response. That’s why advertising agencies, service providers, and advertisers should head straight to www.sdv-award.ch, review the terms and conditions, and join in! Submissions must be received at the SDV headquarters by January 31, 2016, at the latest. New: Anyone who submits their campaigns by the end of November will receive a 10 % discount! SDV members (ASW, BSW, SW Schweizer Werbung, SMC, swissfundraising, and VSV) also benefit from reduced entry fees. The awards will be presented on June 9, 2016.

Publicis: Roger Federer in space for Jura

Two years ago, Publicis distilled Jura’s coffee culture into a short, catchy slogan: «Freshly ground, not in capsules.» The latest campaign is also based on this “Lead the Change” strategy developed by the agency.

Once again, this is surprisingly realized by Jura brand ambassador Roger Federer. Federer, a man of the world, has been everywhere in his career. Except in space. And that's exactly where the new TV commercial takes him. The tennis star floats through a space station and visibly enjoys this new experience, until a nasty realization makes him shudder. Fortunately, this was only a brief daydream - inspired by the futuristic Jura Z6 fully automatic coffee machine, which serves an incomparable and, above all, freshly ground espresso. The 360-degree campaign started with social media teasers, including a post by Roger Federer on his Facebook page. In addition to the TV commercial, advertisements are also used.

Young people prefer to consume cat videos rather than information media

Young adults are reading fewer and fewer newspapers, and their radio and TV consumption is also declining. At the same time, young people are gravitating toward less sophisticated content on social media. The industry views this trend with concern—and is looking for solutions.

The latest "Yearbook 2015 Quality of the Media" once again paints a bleak picture of the development of the Swiss media landscape. Mark Eisenegger, president of the "Kurt Imhof Foundation for Media Quality," spoke of a "structural crisis in information journalism" at the presentation of the work in Bern on Monday. Trust in the traditional media continues to decline. The fact that this trend is most noticeable among young people, of all people, worries him, he said. "From a state policy point of view, it is alarming that the young almost no longer consult information media."

Subscription newspapers are out

The numbers speak for themselves: subscription newspapers no longer reach more than half of young adults. In 2015, 56 percent of respondents between the ages of 16 and 29 said they never use a subscription newspaper. In 2009, the figure was still 35 percent. Radio, free newspapers, tabloids and television, which rely on hard news, also lost resonance over the same period. Only online content received more attention - but the increase of plus two percent is small. Instead, the young increasingly informed themselves via social media channels or were lost as information users altogether because they invested their time in entertainment offerings, Eisenegger said. "Many young people are looking for the mundane, shallower stories, soft news." This means, for example, posts or articles about Hollywood stars, about accidents and crimes, or the funniest cat videos.

Promote media competence

For example, the proportion of mobile users is higher at online portals such as 20minuten.ch, Blick.ch, and Watson.ch than at Nzz.ch or Tagesanzeiger.ch. This development is reinforced by the growing importance of Facebook and other social media. Of the 200 articles that were linked to, tweeted or commented on the most on the news sites last year, around 60 percent were soft news articles. That political news is losing importance among young media users worries media scholars. "It is time for media companies and journalists to reflect more critically on this development," Eisenegger said. Young people in particular are dependent on complex issues being classified, they said. The study authors therefore urgently call for more emphasis to be placed on media competence in schools. Young people must learn to distinguish between good and less good media. This is not the case enough today.

Less cat videos

Various representatives of media companies and journalists share these demands in part, as became clear at the panel discussion for the presentation of the new yearbook. "I take the findings seriously," said Daniel Foppa, domestic head of the Tages- Anzeiger. In the future, for example, interaction with the reader must be increased, he said. In his experience, however, political stories also have the potential to reach a broad readership. During the discussion, Nick Lüthi, editor of Medienwoche, suggested strengthening the information channels and reducing the entertaining content. Otherwise, he said, young people won't turn to quality media later. "Then we lose them."

Finances are not right either

The authors of the study are also concerned about the financial situation of the information media. Willingness to pay for online content remains low, they say, and advertising revenues are falling far short of expectations. Among other things, this is leading to more concentration and less diversity in the media landscape. Overall, the quality of the Swiss media has declined, concludes the yearbook - and not for the first time. The media scientists still attest the highest quality to public radio, followed by public television and the Sunday newspapers. The yearbook is produced by the University of Zurich's Public and Society Research Center (Fög) and was published for the sixth time this year. It was initiated by Zurich sociology professor Kurt Imhof, who died this spring at the age of 59 (Werbewoche.ch reported). (SDA)

SRF archive awarded

As part of UNESCO World Day for Audiovisual Heritage, the SRF Archive is opening its doors to offer visitors a glimpse into the history of Swiss television. For this, it is being honored by the Memoriav Association with the award for the best Swiss educational project.

The Swiss Radio and Television Archive is opening its doors on October 27, 2015, giving the public an insight into Swiss television history. The day of visits is entitled "From film reel to tape robot". On guided tours, visitors will immerse themselves in the holdings of past decades and experience first-hand the work involved in preserving and archiving moving images.

On World Audiovisual Heritage Day on October 27, Unesco annually calls for attention to be drawn to the unique value of audiovisual documents and holdings. In this context, the Memoriav association awards a prize for the mediation project that draws attention in the most interesting way to the importance of preserving Switzerland's audiovisual cultural heritage. This award is given to the SRF archive for its visit day on October 27.

The Memoriav association is committed to the preservation and broad use of Switzerland's audiovisual cultural heritage. Commenting on the day of visits to the SRF archive, Memoriav Director Christoph Stuehn says: "Radio and television archives are important places of memory and remembrance of our time - museums of the 20th and 21st centuries. They bring history into the present and thus have a significant impact on cultural memory."

Ogilvy & Mather: On Europe's Roads with Ford 4×4.

Ogilvy & Mather Zurich has launched a Europe-wide all-wheel-drive campaign for Ford.

Switzerland is rightly considered one of the most challenging 4×4 countries in the world. Climate, weather, topography—the conditions for an intelligent all-wheel-drive system could hardly be better. It’s no coincidence that Ford entrusted the development of its new Europe-wide campaign for its all-wheel-drive models to Ogilvy & Mather Zurich. The requirements that had to be taken into account ranged from depicting the models on snow to ensuring the concept was universally understandable and effectively executed across all European countries. The campaign, developed by Ogilvy & Mather Zurich within this framework, is based on the idea that a Ford 4×4 can take you anywhere—no matter how high, how far, or how remote the destination may be.

Mondeo_4x4

Ogilvy & Mather Zurich subsequently created a striking yet meaningful visual for each model in the Ford 4×4 range. The content and setting of each visual are tailored to the respective model and its specific features. In addition, three campaign visuals within the campaign bring together all current Ford 4×4 models.

Kuga_4x4

The advertising materials developed for this campaign include print ads, posters, and online media (OLM), with the first creative elements already being rolled out across Europe these days. In Switzerland, a national print ad campaign is kicking things off. The Mondeo and the Kuga are taking the lead in these ads, and the Mondeo will also be featured in billboard-sized ads at Auto Züri. Further initiatives for the S-MAX and the Galaxy will follow.

Last but not least: Testicles among themselves

The Australian agency Clemenger BBDO has two testicles talking - and is met with enthusiasm.

The fact that underpants for men should not only look good, but should first and foremost be comfortable, seems to be increasingly coming to the fore in advertising. This has already been clearly communicated by the underwear label Tommy John (Werbewoche.ch reported). The Australian underwear manufacturer Bonds also takes a more creative (and likeable) approach than photographing Cristiano Ronaldo or Justin Bieber in their underpants. "Very comfy undies" - the two talkative testicles agree, discussing their worries and woes and occasionally consulting their brains for further clarification. You don't have to find it funny - but you can. With a clear conscience. The campaign is being celebrated on YouTube - with lots of clicks and enthusiastic comments. (hae)

Tele 1: New presenter for "On the Road

Starting next year, Fabienne Bamert will be the new face of «Unterwegs.» The 27-year-old host will travel through Central Switzerland for the popular Sunday evening show, taking over from Kurt Zurfluh.

Zurfluh has hosted the show for the past two years. Bamert has already presented several popular culture programs on the Central Switzerland TV station, including the live broadcasts of the Central Switzerland Wrestling Festival and the recently aired extra program "s'9 Bruuchtom". In addition, the 27-year-old presenter regularly appears in front of the camera for the Fastnachts broadcasts and is well-known in the region as the presenter of the "News" and "Sports" programs. Before Bamert took up her position at Tele 1, she worked for the Zug press and Radio Central.

Fabienne-Bamert

With the change of person, the show "Unterwegs" also gets a content relaunch without changing the basic idea of the show. Bamert travels through the Tele 1 broadcast area and presents its diversity. Places in Central Switzerland and the people who belong to them are brought closer to the television audience. "Fabienne Bamert is a stroke of luck for Central Switzerland Television," comments Adriano Gerussi, Editor-in-Chief of Tele 1, and adds, "With her, we have a homegrown presenter who virtually embodies the basic idea of our program - local folk culture with its multifaceted shades."

The previous "Unterwegs" presenter Kurt Zurfluh is leaving the show at his own request after two years. "I had a very good time and felt very comfortable with Central Switzerland Television and the broadcasting medium that suited me," says Zurfluh. The 66-year-old will continue to appear on Central Switzerland Television for special programs in the future.

Leo Burnett Switzerland: New appearance for Sanitas

The implementation of Sanitas’ digital strategy is in full swing. Customers can now enjoy even easier access to all services. Leo Burnett captures this perfectly in a campaign.

Two films form the core of the campaign under the motto "You'll reach your goal faster with Sanitas. They show in a humorous way that life already requires enough patience. For example, a child can't blow out the candles on a birthday cake on the first try. Or business people fail when they try to get the beamer going in a meeting. Sanitas doesn't want to put the necessary patience to the test.

The films are accompanied by print ads that explain the entire range of services. Simply scan in your claim receipts via the Sanitas app, check the status of your deductible and franchise at the click of a button, or always have your insurance card with you in digital form on your cell phone.

House of Communication: "Ein Prosit der Gemütlichkeit" at the Oktoberfest

For the third time, the four agencies of the Swiss Serviceplan Group hosted an Oktoberfest celebration at the Haus der Kommunikation. Under the motto «Ein Prosit der Gemütlichkeit,» the cry of «O’zapft is!» rang out last Friday for over 300 invited guests and employees.

This year, the Haus der Kommunikation was once again transformed into a traditional Munich beer tent: on October 23, agency clients and employees celebrated Oktoberfest together in dirndls and lederhosen. The Oktoberfest symbolizes the descent from the Bavarian parent company in Munich and has already become a tradition for the owner-managed Swiss agency group.

This year's motto is "Ein Prosit der Gemütlichkeit" and stood for what the Oktoberfest should be for all guests: a nice get-together. With a boisterous mood, brass band music, Weisswurst and pretzels, over 300 guests enjoyed the evening together.

The traditional Bavarian festival in Zurich Hottingen is intended to thank customers and the trust they place in the integrated agency concept, which is unique in Switzerland. Serviceplan Group Switzerland is part of the international Serviceplan network. The agency model in this country is based on the pillars of advertising, public relations, digital, publishing and media and combines all disciplines under one roof in the heart of Zurich.
