Last but not least: When unicorns shit rainbows

A footstool for a healthy visit to the toilet is a hard sell. So the makers of the commercial got creative and had a noble knight recite the sober information - presented by a rainbow-shitting unicorn.

Because who would buy something like that?

The makers of the quirky product therefore advertised with an even quirkier clip. (uma)

New currency for advertising effectiveness planned

The Competition Commission (Weko) will be reviewing the joint venture between Swisscom, SRG, and Ringier until early 2016. According to information from *Schweiz am Sonntag*, preparations are already underway to create a new metric designed to measure the effectiveness of an advertising medium more accurately.

The current standard measure for measuring the reach of a medium is soon to be replaced by a more precise measure of digital media. According to Schweiz am Sonntag, the joint venture considers the "total audience" to be insufficient. They believe they are big enough to be able to remedy the situation, as Schweiz am Sonntag writes. This is also the view of private competitors, according to complaints received by the Federal Office of Communications (OFCOM). Apparently, agencies, private TV stations and radios, advertising marketers and publishing houses fear that the joint venture could decisively strengthen its market power with its own currency. According to a complaint filed by Schweiz am Sonntag, the joint venture is in a position to establish its own currency for the part of the advertising market it dominates. "Other market participants would not have access to a currency for this market or only under the conditions set by the joint venture." Competitors would possibly have to provide the joint venture with their own data in order to be able to show the value of their offers in the new currency.

When asked by Schweiz am Sontag, the Swisscom spokesperson said: "Various initiatives are underway in the market to develop the existing currencies and to consider possible future currencies." The companies involved in the joint venture are active in various committees and are talking to the initiators of the various initiatives.

"EcoDriver " with 100'000 downloads in 4 days

Driving smart needs little, but saves a lot of fuel and money. Quality Alliance Eco-Drive and Energie Schweiz have commissioned the agencies TBD and Dreipol to convey these messages in an entertaining and interactive way, without any admonishing fingers.

Shifting up quickly, driving at low revs or pumping the tires better are three of the twelve tips that can easily be incorporated into everyday driving. To make smart driving tangible and, above all, experienceable, the two agencies worked with the client to develop a mobile game based on the Eco Drive rules. The better you apply them intuitively, the further you drive on your tank of fuel. You don't even have to know the rules, you literally experience them in the game and become an Eco Driver.

The "EcoDriver" mobile game has obviously struck a chord. Even before the start of the campaign, it was a big hit and two days after the launch there were already over 100,000 downloads. (Incidentally, the current high score is 15,300 meters.) You can download "EcoDriver" free of charge from the App store and in Google Play.

Strikingly constant use of free newspapers

For the past six years, the Y&R Group Switzerland has been publishing the Media User Index. The latest chart on media usage highlights the steady use of free newspapers, while daily newspapers continue to lose readership.

Since the surveys began five years ago, the use of free newspapers has always been well above 60%, while that of daily newspapers is now below 50%. This was reported by the Swiss Free Newspaper Association in a press release on Friday. Those responsible at the MUI define free newspapers as all free newspapers that are read by a (surveyed) person. An important group of these are the weekly free newspapers that are distributed to all households in a certain area. Most of these are organized in the Association of Swiss Free Newspapers, reaching around 1.6 million and thus around half of the households in German- and French-speaking Switzerland.

The Media User Index records the information behavior of the Swiss population every year; a total of around 2,000 people in German-speaking and French-speaking Switzerland are surveyed for this purpose. Internet usage, particularly via smartphone, continues to rise significantly.

"Digital Marketing Summit" and "Digital Marketing Award" on November 19, 2015

For the sixth time, the IAB Switzerland Association, together with its presenting sponsor Romandie Network, is presenting the "Oscar" of the digital advertising industry.

Once again this year, prizes for outstanding achievements in digital marketing will be awarded in front of an audience of over 500. Comedian and presenter Claudio Zuccolini will host the evening. In the afternoon, the IAB Switzerland Association will host the "Digital Marketing Summit". Guests can look forward to renowned speakers from Switzerland and abroad, who will present various success stories from the world of digital marketing.

According to the IAB, the "Digital Marketing Award" has established itself as the most important industry event in the digital advertising sector in Switzerland in recent years. Nominated and voted for by the IAB Board and all IAB specialist group members, the "Digital Marketer of the Year" is awarded to a project or organization that has made a special contribution to the development of the digital advertising market in the current year.

The "Digital Newcomer of the Year" award, which was introduced in 2014, will once again be presented this year to the person who has achieved the best performance in the final examination of the IAB Academy's basic course. The "Digital Lifetime Award" goes to a person who has made an outstanding contribution to the Swiss market. They have shaped the digital advertising market in Switzerland through their performance or commitment with their own company or in a company for which they work.

Top-class speakers at the "Digital Marketing Summit

On the afternoon of October 19, 2015, the "Digital Marketing Summit" will take place for the third time, offering a series of exciting specialist talks, case presentations and a keynote speech. The motto of the VIP event is "Digital Success".

The program of the summit will be determined by top-class speakers from Germany and abroad. Dr. Stephan Sigrist, founder of the think tank W.I.R.E., has been invited to give the keynote speech. In his presentation "The big noise", he explains that more data generally means more knowledge and more transparency. In his eyes, however, the rise of the data society may not bring more clarity, but the opposite: more half-knowledge and a lack of transparency. In future, this could force us not to outsource decisions to statistics, but to finally think for ourselves again. And it opens up a new task for marketing.

Dr. Wenzel Drechsler, Head of Market Research at United Internet, looks at quality in online advertising and shows why just being visible is not enough. Olivier Quillet, Head of Corporate Marketing & Communication at Nestlé Switzerland, looks at how content marketing can be used successfully. Felix Badura, co-founder and Director Product Development at Meetrics GmbH, explains the switch to viewable impressions. Björn Kaspring, Head of Premium Display & Video at InteractiveMedia, will be looking at the search for the digital original meter - the digital currency of the future. Stefan Häckel, Managing Director at VICE CEE, will talk about narrative brand management as a savior and challenge in the digital age. "Content marketing - the last exit for advertising" is the title of the presentation by Martin Dräger, Managing Director at Unruly.

Registrations for the "Digital Marketing Summit" are accepted at [email protected] accepted. The event costs CHF 450.

Bschüssig's second prank with Matthias Sempach

An autograph card or pasta!? For the young wrestlers, the choice is clear. After all, they want to grow up to be as big and strong as King Sempach.

After 2014, Bschüssig Teigwaren doubles down with the testimonial of wrestling king Matthias Sempach. In a witty commercial, Sempach impresses in a relaxed manner with the young wrestlers Kevin and Cédric, who want his pasta instead of his autograph card. "Yes, Bschüssig are simply the best, says Sempach."

The short version (16s) of the Bschüssig TV commercial has been running on SRF1 & SRF2 since October 19. The long version (25s) will initially only be published on the web. The subjects will be used online, as print ads and posters, among other things.

Corrigendum: Media Trend Journal 2015-3

In issue 2015-3 of the Media Trend Journal, published on Friday, the section titled «Stable NZZ Group» on pages 4–6 incorrectly stated that *Migros Magazin* had experienced a significant decline compared to last fall. This was an oversight.

On the contrary, the Coop Zeitung lost significantly, as correctly noted in the table on page 28 (top left). We apologize for this.

Swiss Radio and Television Wins Eight International Eyes & Ears Awards

Eyes & Ears of Europe, the European association for design, promotion, and marketing in the audiovisual media sector, presented SRF's Design and Marketing department with eight awards at the 2015 Medientage München.

On Thursday, October 22, 2015, the industry association Eyes & Ears of Europe honored outstanding production achievements of the past year with the International Eyes & Ears Awards. The best productions of the past year were honored in various categories in the fields of media design, audio, interactive, promotion and cross-media campaigns. Swiss Radio and Television was delighted to receive eight awards.

Category Best Program Opening Credits: Sports
1st prize for SRF: European Athletics Championships
The jury's reasoning: In the opening credits for the 2014 European Athletics Championships in Zurich, SRF focuses on the typical disciplines: sprinters, javelin throwers and relay runners compete for top performances. The decisive moments are captured in slow motion: the sprinters' thrilling finish, the javelin throw or the handover of the baton. Produced to the usual high quality, the opening credits arouse the audience's passion.

Category Best Program Opening Credits: Culture
1st prize for SRF: Baroque
The jury's reasoning: Lavish decorative elements, gold leaf and leafy tendrils - eye-catching, seductive and surprising. Hardly any other epoch relies so heavily on effects and stirs up emotions. The opening credits for the Baroque theme on Swiss radio and television are designed accordingly. Geometrically designed gardens, fencing duels between gallants and tables overloaded with food show typical features of that era. All moments are staged in a high-quality way on a woman's body - sensual and opulent.

The "ECO" special won second prize in the Best 2D/3D Animation category. Second prize was also awarded to the Formula 1 on-air program spot; third prize in the same category went to the football spot. SRF Kultur won second prize in the Best Cross-media Channel Campaign category.

"Glanz & Gloria" wins third prize in the Best Studio Design/Set Design/Scene Design category. The third prize also goes to SRF Sport in the Best Sports Design category.

First "Programmatic Advertising Day" in Switzerland

The first Swiss Programmatic Advertising Day, held on October 22, 2015, at the Volkshaus in Zurich, featured packed halls, engaging presentations, interesting panel discussions, plenty of networking, and a great atmosphere.

The topic of programmatic advertising struck a chord with the times, as evidenced by the large number of visitors. The four association organizers drew an extremely positive conclusion and are looking forward to continuing the event next year. The organizers welcomed over 250 participants to Zurich's Volkshaus for a day of intensive discussion on the topic of programmatic advertising. Representatives from advertising clients, agencies and publishers accepted the invitation from the digital marketing association IAB Switzerland, the electronic media interest group IGEM, the association of Switzerland's leading communication agencies Leading Swiss Agencies and the Swiss Advertising Client Association SWA.

Numerous presentations by speakers from Switzerland and abroad highlighted various aspects of the already booming business of data-based advertising delivery (Nicolas Clasen, Digicas) as well as strategic and technical challenges for brands (Perijn Hoefsloot, UPC Cablecom), premium publishers (Rui de Freitas, Tamedia) and agencies (Philipp Semmler, Mediaschneider AG). In addition to the special features and "maturity level" of the Swiss advertising market (Roger Baur, Netprofit), the effects of data-driven advertising for publishers were highlighted (Jochen Witte, Stailamedia) and the consequences of data leakage for programmatic buying analyzed (Siamac Alexander Rahnavard, Cadreon). A concluding panel discussion was dedicated to the handling of data and brand safety.

The first Programmatic Advertising Day in Switzerland demonstrated the great interest of all players in the Swiss advertising market in the topic. Even if there is still a certain amount of uncertainty in dealing with programmatic advertising and a need for development compared to other countries, Switzerland is now well positioned. For Roland Ehrler, Director of SWA, programmatic offers many opportunities, but still needs to become more of a focus for advertising clients.

"The sensationally well-attended event showed us that the Swiss advertising industry is ready for the next step and is looking full steam ahead into the future of programmatic advertising," summarized Roger Baur, Managing Director of IAB Switzerland. Ueli Custer, Managing Director of IGEM, has a similar view: "The Programmatic Advertising Day 2015 provided me with interesting insights and knowledge about this market. In my view, a repeat next year is absolutely essential!" "With programmatic advertising, the associations succeeded at yesterday's event in giving advertising clients, publishers and communication and media agencies a common understanding of a very complex topic and creating a platform in this form for exchanging expertise for the first time," says Catherine Purgly, Managing Director of Leading Swiss Agencies.

Google is also growing strongly as Alphabet

Alphabet is picking up where Google left off. The first financial results since the corporate restructuring into the new holding company Alphabet are encouraging: revenue and profit rose sharply.

Because the Group wants to buy back shares, the shares also rose significantly. From July to September, profits rose year-on-year from 2.74 to 3.98 billion dollars, as Alphabet announced on Thursday. Turnover increased by 13 percent to 18.68 billion dollars. Adjusted for costs incurred by the company to attract users to its websites, revenue amounted to 15.1 billion dollars.

Analysts had expected weaker figures. The share price initially rose by over ten percent after the close of trading. The announcement of share buybacks worth up to 5.1 billion dollars may have contributed to the strong market reaction.

Costs rise less sharply

Advertising revenue, the Group's most important source of income, climbed by 13% to 16.78 billion dollars. Expenses, which are critically observed by investors, increased by 9.1 percent to 13.97 billion dollars.

The company is becoming more economical under the new CFO Ruth Porat - in the previous quarters the increases were ten, 13 and 22 percent.

The former Google Group surprisingly announced the reorganization into a new holding company called Alphabet in August and completed it at the beginning of October. The previous Google shareholders became shareholders in the new holding company.

However, there have been no changes to the accounting for the time being. The first quarterly figures with the new structure will not be published until January. (SDA)
