Xerox study: Offers must be better tailored to consumers

At 91 percent, the vast majority of European retailers surveyed in a study by Xerox and Forrester Consulting believe that the use of big data analytics will lead to stronger customer loyalty within the next two years.

The findings are based on responses from 70 major retailers surveyed by Xerox as part of the wider Big Data in Western Europe Today study. The study analyzes the opportunities that arise when companies incorporate big data strategies into their marketing mix to make more offers available that shoppers want. Due to the growing competition in online and brick-and-mortar retail, more and more retailers are looking at ways to make their business more customer-oriented. According to a study conducted by Forrester Consulting on behalf of Xerox, almost two thirds of retailers (60 percent) are therefore looking for new, customer-centric solutions. In order to focus even more on customers, 43 percent of retailers and retail companies intend to use big data strategies to address customers in a personalized, targeted and real-time manner. Within the next twelve months, 41% of those surveyed will also use the data obtained in this way to improve online shopping.

This is where big data will be used in the future:

The precise observation of customer behavior across different platforms should help to gain a better understanding of customer needs and thus also enable a more precise customer approach. More than half of those surveyed (53%) intend to optimize customer service in the call center by integrating customer data more closely. A similar number (51%) of study participants would like to use big data in the future to provide customers with the same information and offers across all platforms - whether in-store, in the online store or on social networks.

"Retailers and retailers are recognizing the benefits that good data analytics can bring to both the customer and their bottom line," comments Craig Saunders, Director of Analytics Resource Center at Xerox Consulting and Analytics Services. "Big data plays a critical role in providing key insights into the purchasing behavior of each individual consumer. These insights are what ultimately determine whether a company is successful in the marketplace or not."

About the study

Definition: Forrester defines big data as a series of methodologies, processes, architectures and technologies. In addition to special hardware, algorithms and knowledge, these also require processes that go beyond standard data analysis techniques in order to be able to process the large volumes of diverse data and deliver results.

Forrester conducted an online survey of 330 senior business (CEO, HR, finance and marketing) and IT decision-makers in retail, high-tech, industrial and financial services companies in Belgium, France, Germany, the Netherlands and the UK for the study "Big Data in today's Western Europe". The study was completed in January 2015.

The study refers to three groups based on their "data maturity": the "datarati", the "data discoverers" and the "data laggards". The survey participants were categorized into the individual groups based on their level of agreement with certain statements about big data and analysis capabilities.

Y&R: Into the water for boat refugees

Y&R Group Switzerland has devised an ambient campaign for Heks on the topic of boat refugees.

The aid organization Heks is committed to helping refugees in Switzerland and abroad. In various indoor swimming pools in Switzerland, signs have been placed underwater at the end of the pool to draw attention to the plight of boat people in an emotional way by "simulating" the situation in which people find themselves when they cross the sea. The signs congratulate all those who have made it to the other side. Whereas many boat people do not.

Last but not least: Wagging Larry and the Bone Chasers

This commercial for dog sweaters finally features dogs making music again!

The idea that the Gravity Road agency came up with for the Tu clothing label of British department store Tu is not all that original. Nevertheless, you almost can't help but watch when the band Wagging Larry and the Bone Chasers play for a pre-Christmas dance. Especially when an Afghan greyhound with so much soul in his paws plays the organ. And a Labrador plays the bass - because Labradors have "a natural attitude for the bass", as we learn in the "Behind the Scenes" video. Incidentally, all the four-legged friends in the commercial are full professionals who are not in front of the camera for the first time. Sovereign! (hae)

Maxomedia: Christmas magic for Search.ch and Local.ch

Local.ch and Search.ch are giving their customers and users the joy of sharing the holiday spirit. To that end, Maxomedia has developed a microsite where you can send your loved ones a Christmas surprise right to their digital doorstep.

On the microsite specially designed by Maxomedia, the user is asked where Christmas should be just around the corner. He can enter the desired address in a search field. And then the magic happens. From a bird's eye view, a brightly lit Christmas tree and the message "Happy Holidays" are displayed at the specified address. Thanks to a satellite map connection, the house becomes visible and is inserted into a postcard frame. This creates very personal, digital holiday cards with a Christmas surprise that the user can send by e-mail or share on Facebook.

In addition, the two directories are supporting people in need as part of this Christmas campaign. Due to their strong local ties, Local.ch and Search.ch are donating CHF 20'000 to Winterhilfe Schweiz.

Swiss spend significantly more on toy gifts for Christmas this year

According to GfK, Swiss consumers plan to spend significantly more on toys this Christmas than they did in 2014. Men also plan to spend more on toys than women. Sixty percent say they will also shop online—but only five percent actually do so.

332 francs - that's how much a Swiss household plans to spend on toys for Christmas in 2015. That is 50 francs and 18 percent more than in the previous year. It is also interesting to note that men (CHF 357) plan to spend more than women (CHF 302). Is that the child in the man coming through?

It is felt that purchases are made online and offline, effectively mostly offline

60% say they buy toys for Christmas both in-store and online. It is interesting to note that the actual online share of the overall market is only around 5% according to GfK estimates. Many seem to gather information on the Internet and sometimes also buy toys. However, the expensive, large gifts are then bought in the store around the corner so that they are sure to find their place under the Christmas tree in time.

Toys are usually purchased at short notice

The short-term nature of shopping has also been confirmed: 14 days before Christmas, over a third of all households have not yet made any toy purchases. The crowds in the toy departments are therefore guaranteed.

Von Engsberg Produces Video for New Year's Eve Celebration

90 seconds that leave you wanting more. Von Engsberg produced a video for the Paul Club in St. Gallen, which went live online a few days ago.

The film promotes the New Year’s Eve celebration under the slogan «Come into the magic» and draws inspiration from Oscar Wilde’s legendary novel *The Picture of Dorian Gray*. Although first published in 1891, the novel remains fascinating, timeless, and perfect for a magical New Year’s Eve in a stylish setting: full of gothic romance, debauchery, guilt, and broken resolutions. The entire scene was staged at the Paul Club in St. Gallen.

Union goes on strike at Amazon site in Koblenz

Another strike at Amazon in Germany: In the middle of the final spurt of the Christmas business, the trade union Verdi has called on the employees of the American mail order company to strike at various locations.

In Leipzig, the strike was to last throughout Monday and in Koblenz until the end of the early shift on Thursday. Around 200 employees gathered in front of the Leipzig company premises on Monday morning, as a Verdi spokesman reported. By midnight, the union expected about 450 participants there. There were also work stoppages in North Rhine-Westphalia: With the start of the early shift, 250 employees in Rheinberg and 80 colleagues in Werne went on strike, according to the union. The number of strikers in Rheinberg was expected to increase further with the shift change in the course of Monday. The strike here could continue up to and including Christmas Eve. The Christmas business is the strongest sales event of the year for the retail trade. In the run-up to Christmas, Verdi regularly calls for industrial action at German branches of the Internet company. "We want to really put Amazon in a bind," the union said in Leipzig. Before the weekend, Amazon had announced that despite the strike, deliveries would be made on time. The vast majority of the more than 10,000 employees and seasonal helpers had worked regularly. In addition, one has a Europe-wide logistics network. (SDA)
