NZZ printing center in Schlieren becomes education center

The real estate investment company Swiss Prime Site has purchased the former NZZ printing center in Schlieren. The new owner plans to preserve the buildings and convert them into a supraregional educational center, as the NZZ Media Group announced on Thursday.

In addition to infrastructure for training and further education as well as research and development, coworking spaces and rooms for the community, sport and culture are also planned, according to the press release. The location is ideal for this, as it is easily accessible and not far from existing universities and research institutions.

The purchase agreement was signed on Wednesday. The purchase price was not disclosed. The NZZ Media Group will use existing service premises in Schlieren as a tenant in future.

The NZZ Media Group announced the closure of the printing center in Schlieren in February. This decision was in response to the "considerable overcapacity in the Swiss newspaper printing market". The NZZ and its Sunday edition are printed by its competitor Tamedia. (SDA)

Déformation professionelle - Professional diseases in advertising and marketing

Axel Eckstein, Executive Creative Director at Leo Burnett Switzerland, writes in *Werbewoche* about pathological trends in advertising and marketing. In this installment: Media Alzheimer's (preroll syndrome).

Description

Media Alzheimer's disease is characterized by forgetting familiar media usage behaviour and the associated inability to recognize it when dealing with today's online advertising formats.

Causes

Due to increasing life expectancy and the accelerated succession of media innovations, the disease is being diagnosed more and more frequently. Neologisms are deposited in the collective memory ("skipping"), which makes it increasingly difficult to retrieve analog, but older memory content ("zapping away").

Symptoms

Those affected show increased insecurity when dealing with commercials and repeat the same question every 30 years: "What if someone doesn't want to watch my commercial after a few seconds?" Sufferers react with confusion when others say things that they cannot classify: "Make a movie that people voluntarily want to watch in its entirety." Independent brand management is severely restricted.

Complications

The internet company involved in most of the cases is itself suffering from media Alzheimer's disease. Its conviction that advertising placements should not be distracting and should be relevant has fallen victim to forgetfulness: interrupter formats are proliferating on the company's own video platform. And it "forgot" to deliver skippable video ads to users of ad blockers.

Havas: delicious death star

Anyone familiar with the "Brändli Bomb" from Confiserie Brändli in Aarau knows that it is not just a praliné like others, but an oversized chocolate ball with compacted marzipan mass.

For the release of the new Star Wars movie, younger generations (and their mothers) are also made aware of the oversized sin with POS posters, cinema slides and advertisements. The Brändli bomb hovers menacingly like the Death Star in outer space - accompanied by the Jedi incantation "May the pleasure be with you."

What Switzerland Googled in 2015

The euro exchange rate, Stan Wawrinka, and Sepp Blatter were the topics that captured Switzerland’s attention in 2015. Google took the pulse of the past year and published Switzerland’s most popular search terms in its «Google Year in Review 2015.».

The lifting of the euro exchange rate floor by the Swiss National Bank and the strong franc were on the minds of the Swiss. As a result, the term euro exchange rate recorded the strongest increase and is therefore the search term of 2015, followed by Charlie Hebdo and solar eclipse.

People 2015: Stan Wawrinka, Sepp Blatter and Jolanda Spiess-Hegglin

Once again this year, Google Switzerland has analyzed the search queries for the most popular Swiss personalities. The list includes celebrities from the worlds of sport, business and entertainment. Stan Wawrinka's victory at the French Open puts him in first place on this list. Sepp Blatter is in second place, followed by Jolanda Spiess-Hegglin. Other celebrities of particular interest in this Google year are Milo Moiré, Timea Bacsinszky and Vera Dillier.

A look at the "Scandals and excitement" list shows which topics moved people in Switzerland in 2015. The biggest increase in search queries was for Bruce's transformation into Caitlyn Jenner, a member of the Kardashian clan. The turbulence surrounding FIFA triggered a great deal of search interest for Sepp Blatter, who came in second place. Jeremy Clarkson caused a furore with his tantrum against a BBC producer and ranks third. The performance artist Milo Moiré also attracted attention this year with her provocative performances. Cornelia Bösch, who suffered a fainting spell during a news broadcast, and Vera Dillier, whose new boyfriend generated search queries, made it into the other ranks. German TV stars Angelina Heger and Severino Seeger also stirred the emotions of the Swiss and triggered search queries.

Swiss hits: Paléo Festival, Zermatt, Rigi, Lake Constance, Kunsthaus Zurich and fondue

In the Swiss towns and villages category, Zermatt won the race, as it did last year, followed by Zurich and Basel. In the Swiss events category, the Paléo Festival moved up from second place last year to first place. It is followed by the Street Parade and Zurich's Sechseläuten. In collaboration with Switzerland Tourism, the most popular search terms in the categories Swiss mountain peaks, lakes and museums were also determined. The Rigi stands out among the mountain peaks. Lake Constance is the most popular Swiss lake in 2015 and the Kunsthaus Zürich is the museum that particularly interested Google users this year. For the first time, Swiss ski resorts were also ranked. No ski resort was searched for as often as Zermatt, followed by Lenzerheide and Davos. Recipe searches have always been very popular with Google users. The most popular search terms relating to Swiss cuisine are fondue, followed by raclette and polenta.

Ok Google: "What are Wesselmen?"

More and more people are also searching for terms on their smartphone via voice search and asking Google questions. The questions asked were evaluated and listed on the "What are....?" list and "How does...?" list from Google Switzerland. Questions such as "What are Wesselmänner? " - large-scale election posters - or "What are gnats? " - a type of mosquito - were of particular interest to people this year. In addition, in 2015 there were many more searches for how to enlarge a side view, followed by how to make a backup and peach jam.

Global search trends

Worldwide, the search term Lamar Odom recorded the biggest increase in interest from Google users in 2015, followed by Charlie Hebdo. Lamar Odom also landed in first place among the most popular personalities. The US judoka and mixed martial arts fighter Ronda Rousey took second place, followed by Caitlyn Jenner in third place.

"2015 was an eventful year with a somewhat surprising search term of the year: Eurokus," says Matthias Meyer, Google spokesperson. "Overall, Google Search Trends provide a unique perspective on all the moments that moved people in the past year."

Weko says yes to advertising alliance between Swisscom, SRG and Ringier

The Swiss Federal Competition Commission (Weko) has approved, without any conditions, the joint venture between Swisscom, SRG, and Ringier, through which they intend to consolidate their advertising sales.

Following an in-depth review, the Weko does not expect effective competition to be eliminated. In addition to increased cooperation in the marketing of online, TV and radio advertising, the cooperation partners plan to introduce target group-specific TV advertising in Switzerland via Swisscom-TV. According to a statement Wednesday, the Weko expects the joint venture to emerge as one of the strongest players in the advertising marketing market. However, according to the Weko, there are still strong competitors in TV, online, radio and print advertising. In addition, the market development for targeted TV advertising is currently uncertain. Thus, according to the Weko, the legal requirements for a ban or for conditions are not met.

In a joint communiqué, the cooperation partners noted that the Weko decision would give the Swiss advertising market a tailwind. The new company's services would be open to all advertising clients, agencies as well as other providers of advertising inventory. In August, the three companies had said they would contribute their user data to the new company, with Swisscom also contributing its technical know-how and SRG and Ringier their advertising platforms. Gold medal from the Society of Illustrators New York for Lucerne Master's graduate

For her thesis at Lucerne University of Applied Sciences and Arts—Design & Art, as part of her Master of Arts in Design with a specialization in illustration, Francesca Sanna received one of the most coveted awards for illustrators worldwide.

In her book project "I'M MIGRANT", she tells the story of a family's escape to Europe. Francesca Sanna completed her Master of Arts in Design with a specialization in illustration at the Lucerne School of Art and Design in summer 2015. For her thesis, the native Italian developed the project "I'M MIGRANT", which she designed as both an interactive children's book and a print book. In it, she tells the story of a mother fleeing to Europe with two children.

Francesca Sanna has now been awarded the Society of Illustrators New York Gold Medal in the book category for the printed version, which appears under the title "The Journey". "The Society of Illustrators New York is one of the oldest and most renowned organizations for illustration," explains Paolo Friz, lecturer in illustration at the Lucerne School of Art and Design. "Publishers and illustrators from all over the world take part in the calls for entries," says Friz. "The Hall of Fame is home to exceptional illustrators such as Milton Glaser, Brad Holland, Saul Steinberg and Will Eisner."

Your own biography as a starting point

For her project "I'M MIGRANT", Francesca Sanna has already received this year's Master of Arts in Design award from Lucerne University of Applied Sciences and Arts. During the preparatory phase, she spoke several times with migrants from Syria, Eritrea and Somalia, among others. From this, Sanna developed a children's book for eight to twelve-year-olds that describes the flight of a mother and her two children from a crisis area in northern Africa to Europe. In the interactive version, readers have to bring the family safely to Europe. Only two paths do not lead to a dead end. In the illustrated children's book, the reader follows the family's escape in a linear fashion as they travel by boat, car, train and on foot and have to overcome many dangers.

Francesca Sanna's own biography was also the starting point for the work. "I asked myself: what is the difference between me, a migrant from Italy who wanted to have new experiences, and the refugees from Syria and Eritrea, who have no other chance," says the 24-year-old, who migrated from Italy to Switzerland via Germany. "My main aim as an illustrator was to inspire empathy and trigger the idea that each of us could be the migrant in the story." The children's book is expected to be published in English by Nobrow Ltd/ Flying Eye Books in London in April and in German by Nordsüd Verlag in Zurich in July.

Significant growth in the advertising market in November

The advertising market reached its annual peak in November, with total advertising spending of CHF 513 million. The sharp decline in political advertising after the elections was more than offset by campaigns for tobacco products and telecommunications.

The advertising market reached its annual peak with a monthly advertising print of 513 million gross Swiss francs and continues to follow the upward trend. Compared to the same month last year, the advertising market is up 1.6 percent, according to Media Focus. With a proud volume of 4,501 million gross Swiss francs, total advertising print in the first eleven months grew by around 1 percent year on year.

Industries on the upswing?

The largest increases in advertising print were seen in the tobacco (+48.7%), telecommunications (+35.3%), transportation (+25.2%) and retail (+16.4%) industries. However, not all industries are following the upward trend. A decline in advertising pressure can be observed in the Political Campaigns submarket (-57.1%) and in the Energy (-48.6%) and Consumer Electronics & Photo (-32.2%) sectors. In contrast, there are only minor changes in the Events (+0.4%), IT & Office (-0.9%) and Fashion & Sports (-1.6%) sectors, which generate almost the same amount of advertising pressure as in the same month last year.

A warm room for telecommunications

In November, the telecommunications sector generated an advertising print of around 26 million gross Swiss francs, which represents a significant increase of 35.3 percent compared to the same month last year. The crisp autumn days are evidently giving rise to the joy of home cinema, as no less than three products from this sector have made it into the top 10 most advertised products across all sectors: Teleclub Pay TV is in third place, UPC Cablecom Complete Package is in seventh place, and Swisscom TV 2.0 ranks ninth. Another product from the telecommunications industry is once again in the top 10 most advertised products: Apple's iPhone 6s even made it into second place.

Consumer electronics & photo freezes

Contrary to the upward trend, the consumer electronics & photo sector held back with advertising print of around 10 million gross Swiss francs in November. This represents a decrease of 32.2 percent compared to the same month last year. The industry's advertising print was also down throughout 2015. With total advertising print of 55 million gross francs, this was down 28 percent. Will the industry still catch up in December?

Weko sees no elimination of competition through advertising alliance

In its review of the advertising alliance between Swisscom, SRG and Ringier, the Weko concluded that it does not eliminate competition. Therefore, the Weko can neither prohibit this merger nor impose conditions.

This is what Weko Director Rafael Corazza told the SDA news agency on Wednesday. The Weko's decision is a source of controversy in terms of media policy. This is mainly because various publishers and the publishers' association have already made clear in the run-up to the Weko decision that they will fight this advertising alliance of a private media house with two state-affiliated companies such as Swisscom and SRG. Their main argument was that this advertising alliance would lead to further distortion of competition. In fact, the Weko expects the joint venture to become one of the strongest advertising marketers in Switzerland. Nevertheless, the Weko assumes that the advertising market will continue to function because there are other strong competitors, according to Weko Director Rafael Corazza. The fact that Swisscom and SRG, two state-affiliated companies, are involved, played no role in the decision, he said. "We treat them the same as private companies," says Corazza.

Politically intended distortion of competition

With regard to the argument of distortion of competition, Corazza refers to the mandate of the Weko. The decisive question for the authority in assessing the merger was whether it would create a dominant position that would eliminate competition, says Corazza. The question of distortion of competition, on the other hand, did not arise. If there is a distortion of competition, then it already exists today as a result of the advertising activities of the fee-financed SRG, which is politically intended. "The Weko cannot correct politics with a decision on a merger." Corazza further points out that by stating that competition in the advertising market would not be eliminated even with the advertising alliance, the Weko could not impose any conditions on this alliance. It is therefore also not possible to force the joint venture to hand over data, as demanded by individual publishers.

According to Corazza, however, the current decision does not mean that the Weko will not intervene in the advertising market in the future. Indeed, should it become apparent, for example, that smaller media companies would be forced to join the alliance, the Weko would intervene in the event of abuse by the joint venture, Corazza promises. "Then we would have the legitimacy."
