Comedia Congress 2009 decides on merger with communications union

At this year's congress of the media union Comedia on November 28 in Bern, the 100 or so delegates will decide whether Comedia wants to merge with the communications union GeKo.

If the delegates of both unions vote yes - the GeKo members will decide at their congress on November 30 and December 1 in Bern - this would mean the green light for the implementation of the merger as of January 1, 2011, as Comedia writes in a press release.
A merger of the two trade unions, whose core areas of production, logistics and distribution of information and media are moving ever closer together due to technological developments, would create the second-largest trade union within the Swiss Federation of Trade Unions, SGB, with 48,000 members.

Edipresse sells its stake in Rhône Média and Editions Le Nouvelliste

Edipresse sells its stake in the publishing company of the Valais newspaper Le Nouvelliste. The publishing house sells all its shares in Rhône Média SA and the company Editions Le Nouvelliste SA to the main shareholder of the Rhône Média Group, Jacques Lathion.

This was announced by Edipresse on Thursday, according to SDA. The amount of the sale remains confidential. The minority stake in Nouvelliste has lost its significance as part of the merger of the activities of Edipresse and Tamedia. Edipresse previously held a 37 percent stake in Rhône Média.
The sale of the Rhône Média Group has no impact on the agreements between Edipresse and Tamedia, the statement continues. As previously announced, Tamedia intends to take over Edipresse's Swiss business by 2013. Edipresse and Tamedia now want to concentrate on their main activities in the areas of printed and digital media.
Lathion became Rhône Média's main shareholder in spring 2009 through the acquisition of shares. Since then, he has controlled 60.16% of the capital together with Bernard Donzé, with whom he has concluded a shareholders' agreement. Lathion took over as Chairman of the Group in July. Rhône Média had hit the headlines due to problems with its pension fund, among other things. As a result, the CEO had to resign.

Ringier Photo Award 2009: The winners

Serbian photographer Marko Djurica won the 2009 Ringier Photo Award for his photograph «Kosovo Independence.» The runner-up prizes went to «Combat of the Ghosts» by Michal Beránek of the Czech Republic and «Close call …» by Viktor Veres of Hungary.

Ringier was looking for the best press photo of the year for the fourth time. 45 photographers from eight countries submitted their favorites from last year, which were judged by a jury of 19 experts. The photo "Kosovo Independence" by 34-year-old Serbian Marko Djurica was chosen as the best picture of the year. He was in Kosovo during the unrest in March 2008 for the Ringier daily newspaper Blic and captured the moment when Serbian demonstrators clashed with NATO peacekeepers. He remembers the situation well: "The level of violence was very high, and the clouds of tear gas were often so thick that I could no longer see exactly what I was photographing." Djurica is all the more pleased about the appreciation of his
work that is not always without danger.
Michal Beránek took second place with the technically impressive sports study "Combat of the Ghosts". The picture was taken in August 2008 at the Olympic Games in Beijing for the Ringier newspaper Sport. "I am of course delighted to receive this award, but I also accept it on behalf of all the photographers at Ringier Zeitung Sport," explains Beránek modestly, "because we are a team." The picture "Close call ..." by Hungarian photographer Viktor Veres was voted into third place. The spectacular near-collision was part of an air show in the United Arab Emirates and was published in the Ringier newspaper Blikk.
Every year since 2006, Ringier has presented the Photo Award to the best pictures that appeared in one of Ringier's publications in the previous year.

Limmatwelle goes to the AZ Medien Group

The owners of Limmatwelle GmbH have decided to sell the Aargau weekly newspaper Limmatwelle to AZ Medien on January 1, 2010 as part of a succession plan.

The change of ownership should enable the official publication organ of the municipalities of Neuenhof, Spreitenbach, Killwangen and Würenlos, which has a circulation of around 13,000 copies, to face the challenges of the changing media market more effectively, according to a press release issued on Thursday. Limmatwelle will remain as an official publication and will be able to benefit from synergies in infrastructure by being embedded in the publishing activities of the AZ Medien Group. The parties have agreed not to disclose the price.
In January 2010, operational management will be transferred to Oscar Meier, Managing Director of AZ Wochenzeitungen AG of the AZ Medien Group. He will report to Dietrich Berg, Managing Director Magazines/Anzeiger/Books and member of the Executive Board. Bettina Meyer-Herms from Limmatwelle will continue to be the competent point of contact for community representatives and will take care of advertising sales. To ensure a smooth transition, Hannelore Arndt will continue to act as deputy managing director until mid-2010.

Tivo enters into cooperation with Google

Tivo, manufacturer of the most widely used hard disk set-top box in the USA, has announced a cooperation with the internet company Google. According to the company, the aim of the partnership is to improve the measurability of TV advertising.

By analyzing the usage data of the digital video recorder (DVR) down to the second, it should be possible in future to track to the second whether and when the TV audience sees commercials that are displayed by Tivo on the Google TV Ads platform. "The agreement stipulates that Google will license and integrate Tivo viewer data into its measurement of the audience of advertisements carried out via Google TV Ads", according to Pressetext.ch in a joint press release. However, further details of the agreement were not disclosed. They are convinced that this approach will lead to a "substantial improvement in the measurement and attribution" of the impact of advertising clips displayed via Google TV Ads.
Qualitative and financial benefits for advertisers
"Google TV Ads focuses on giving advertisers the opportunity to make their ads more measurable and controllable," explains Mike Steib, Director of Emerging Platforms at Google. With the help of this cooperation, they now have access to an incredibly comprehensive data set of anonymized viewer data. "Advertisers can use this data to better understand which audiences and ads are most effective, which we believe will ultimately lead to more relevant ads for TV viewers," explains Steib.
The collaboration between Tivo and Google should not only bring qualitative but also financial benefits for the TV advertising industry. According to the two companies, the industry could soon be spared the need to engage market research institutes, which until now could only rely on cost-intensive studies such as surveys, panels or other samples in order to gain a reasonably meaningful insight into the effectiveness of TV advertising.

MTV: Outsourcing of productions planned

MTV Networks International is reevaluating its business model in Germany. A report to that effect by the media service Kress was confirmed by company spokeswoman Marie-Blanche Stössinger.

The company is "considering outsourcing its TV and digital productions", Stössinger is quoted as saying on Kress.de. In concrete terms, this means that MTV Networks, with its four channels MTV, Viva, Nick and Comedy Central, no longer wants to produce itself, is reducing its internal infrastructure and is relying on independent production companies outside the Group.
Stössinger explains the move as follows: "This step is intended to free up resources that allow greater flexibility in production and commissioning as well as the acquisition of new content from partner production companies." Viva and MTV are affected, as Nick and Comedy Central already work exclusively with production companies.
According to information from Kress, editors and employees involved in production were threatened with dismissal on Wednesday. Stössinger denies this. No final decisions have been made. However, she also says: "The details of the changes are currently being discussed with the affected departments and the works council."
