Last but not least: Apple's "modern brand management"

Apple is said to use the deliberate leaking of confidential information as an established PR strategy. This claim was made by former Apple marketing manager John Martellaro in an article for the Mac Observer.

Information about Apple leaks out suspiciously often, such as the information about the expected Apple tablet. This recently appeared in the Wall Street Journal. Now a former employee claims that this was part of a sophisticated PR strategy. The information was disseminated directly by the company, Martellaro claims. He refers to his own experience as a PR manager at Apple. The restrictive "one-voice policy" actually contradicts all trends in modern brand management, as Thomas Pleil, Professor of Journalism and Communication at Darmstadt University of Applied Sciences, explains in an interview with Pressetext. In the open social media world, companies are more concerned with opening up to the outside world and turning employees into motivated communicators in the various communication channels from Twitter to Facebook. In its communication strategy, however, Apple is doing the opposite by obliging its employees to remain silent and exercising the maximum possible control over communicated information. Under this control, the brand and the spreading of any rumors about new products and developments have an uncanny attraction.
This can be seen very clearly in the extent to which and how quickly rumors about Apple products make the rounds on the Internet. It is therefore not at all surprising that Apple is taking advantage of this situation with the targeted dissemination of information. Moreover, according to Peil, this is an established approach in the industry. However, such a strategy requires an attractive brand and a strong reputation in the relevant business environment.

Tele Säntis: Transitional application submitted

On 10 December 2009, the Federal Administrative Court upheld Tele Säntis' appeal against the granting of the license to Tele Ostschweiz and referred the matter back to DETEC for reassessment.

According to a Radio Top press release, an initial legal assessment of the possibilities of examining a transitional arrangement until the new decision on regional television in Eastern Switzerland becomes legally binding has produced a clear result. Due to the fact that Tele Säntis fulfills all licensing requirements according to the DETEC decision of 31 October 2008, any transitional licence could only be granted to Tele Säntis. It was therefore decided to immediately resume the planning work that had been interrupted during the appeal proceedings. On January 8, 2010, a 32-page application for an interim license was therefore submitted to DETEC. By concluding a production agreement with Avedia in Gossau/SG, broadcasting operations can begin within 7 days of receiving a transitional license.

Lebrument considers sale of two daily newspapers

Publisher Hanspeter Lebrument is stepping up the pressure in the dispute over a license for his Radio Grischa. He is threatening to shut down the daily newspapers Bündner Tagblatt and La Quotidiana.

Should Bakom determine that Südostschweiz Medien has an abusive dominant market position, Lebrument is considering selling the two daily newspapers. In this way, Lebrument wants to ensure that Radio Grischa receives the license from the federal government and can continue to operate. This is according to Süedostschweiz am Sonntag.
Following a decision by the Federal Administrative Court in December, OFCOM must re-examine the awarding of licenses for Radio Grischa, among others. In particular, it will examine whether the applicants under consideration jeopardize the diversity of opinion and offerings. In its deliberations, the Federal Administrative Court found that the
Südostschweiz Medien has too many daily newspapers.
According to Süedostschweiz am Sonntag, the publisher even expects the two daily newspapers to be discontinued because it will be difficult to find a new sponsor. Internally
has already started planning a single-title system. With the
step, Lebrument wants to ensure that Radio Grischa receives the
concession and can continue to operate.

Criticism of SF apps for the iPhone

Swiss television has recently become available on the iPhone. But this has not been without criticism from private media outlets.

The new Swiss television application provides cell phone users with a constant stream of news and video reports. Many people are not happy about this. It is annoying when the offerings of private media companies compete with fee-financed offerings, said the managing director of the Swiss Press Association at the request of Tagesanzeiger.ch. However, the association's hands are tied as long as SRG remains within the legal sphere.
In addition to the offerings of the fee-financed company in radio, television and online, Ringier spokeswoman Prisca Wolfensberger explains that the company is now also facing competition in this area that is fighting with more advantageous means. The media company Tamedia is also not enthusiastic. Meanwhile, they want to keep a close eye on whether Swiss television is complying with the law with the new iPhone app, as spokesperson Christoph Zimmer explains.

Norwegian newspaper reprints Mohammed cartoons

Following the failed attack on Danish cartoonist Kurt Westergaard, the Norwegian newspaper *Aftenposten* reprinted his controversial drawing of Muhammad, as well as other depictions of the Prophet, on Friday.

Editor-in-chief Hilde Haugsgjerd said that the paper wanted to show its readers what is currently at stake. Last week, a suspected Islamist from Somalia attacked the Danish cartoonist in his home. The cartoonist managed to hide in a room until the police arrived.
In September 2005, the Danish newspaper Jyllands-Posten published twelve caricatures of Mohammed by various artists. They triggered a wave of outrage in the Islamic world, which culminated in protest rallies and unrest. The depiction of the Prophet Mohammed is forbidden in Islam.
The cartoons also led to a discussion about media and press freedom. "We have always defended the right of the media to print these cartoons, and we also brought copies when the discussion broke out in 2005," said Haugsgjerd.

Jung von Matt/Limmat launches radio spots with pictures

The Jung von Matt/Limmat agency created radio spots and YouTube spots for Waser's move, in which the new neighbors of the stationery store sing a welcome song.

Rafael Vogt stands in his grocery store in Zurich's Oberdorf district. He grabs a ruler, waste bin and paper collector. Then he heartily sings "Theo wir fahrn nach Lodz". This is how a YouTube commercial begins, in which Papeterie Waser is greeted with a serenade by a new neighbor after its move. Two other commercials from the "Weissen Wind" restaurant and the "Kinderbuchladen" children's bookshop are just as quirky.
The new neighbors are also working hard for Waser on the radio. With authentic announcements that link directly to YouTube at the end of the commercials. If you enter the keywords "Waser Oberdorf" there, you will see the unusual music videos.
In the information text accompanying the YouTube commercials, customers are asked to do the same as their neighbors. Anyone who sings a song from the commercials at Waser's new location will receive a 20 percent discount on their purchase.
Radio spots were developed by Jung von Matt/Limmat. Papeterie Waser reopened on January 4. The campaign has been on air since December 30, 2009.
Responsible at Waser: Heinz Waser (CEO), Marc Suess (Product Manager), Maja Bäumler (Office Manager Waser Oberdorf). Contexta: Three leisure testers in action for SBB

The Contexta leisure campaign for SBB has been on the air since early January. The campaign centers on three leisure testers—Sergio, Benoît, and Beat—who test SBB’s current leisure offerings every month.

Sergio from Ticino, Benoît from French-speaking Switzerland and Beat from German-speaking Switzerland are the three faces of SBB's new leisure campaign. The three of them go on trips every month and test out SBB's day trips. They travel to the most beautiful regions of Switzerland, experience exciting adventures together and then report on their experiences. With their leisure activities, SBB and public transport open up new perspectives for travelers. This is exactly what the three leisure testers prove: full of adventure and with a pure zest for life, they enjoy life and their free time.
For the campaign, SBB is using TV as the lead medium for the first time in a long time. In short commercials, the three leisure testers draw attention to the current SBB Rail Away combined offers. A new spot dedicated to the current topic is shown every month. The commercials can be seen on Swiss channels. In addition, the respective monthly theme of the three leisure testers is implemented in a print motif and widely distributed: from POS posters to rail posters and brochures. All measures refer to the new leisure platform on Sbb.ch. All the test results for the more than 400 leisure activities can be found there - divided into practical categories. And last but not least, every month there is an online film with Sergio, Benoît and Beat that picks up on the theme of the month and encourages viewers to book one of the offers.
To kick off the campaign, Sergio, Benoît and Beat test the most beautiful winter excursions. They have literally plunged into the snow up to their necks and are enjoying the magic of winter - to be seen in a short TV commercial, an online film and on the print motif. Following exactly the same pattern, the three leisure testers will now present the latest highlights from SBB's leisure offerings and public transport every month. In February, the three will visit the most exciting museums and in March they will experience a turbulent adventure in the wellness spa.
Responsible at SBB: Reto Meissner (Head of Marketing Communication Passenger Traffic), Petra Thomann (Project Management Marketing Communication Leisure Campaign), Sabrina Aeby (Project Assistance), Franziska Pasqua (Media Coordination). Responsible at Contexta: Nadine Borter (overall responsibility), Moritz Staehelin, Jeff Gerber (creative direction), Lionel Büttner (art direction), Sam Divers, Manuel Rohrer (graphics), Conrad Malcher, Andreas Troxler (text), Marc Schumacher (strategy), Dierk Schehrer (consulting management), Jonas Steiger, Michel Sulser (consulting).
