Swiss Photo Award: Record number of participants - submission deadline extended

Due to the high number of registrations and the many inquiries, Ewz.selection has extended the registration deadline for the Swiss Photo Prize by five days. Works can still be submitted until Saturday, January 16, 2010.

The organizers announced on Monday that a new record number of participants had already been registered before the deadline. In addition, a second hall will have to be rented for the Preview Day and the judging in February. The longer submission deadline is intended to give latecomers the opportunity to solve technical problems. They should also have enough time to submit high-quality work.

Südostschweiz Media Group: Book publishers with new publishing management

After more than 20 years as publishing director of Rüegger Verlag and following the establishment of Südostschweiz Buchverlag, Myriam Engler will in future only accompany the fortunes of the book publishers as publisher. Her former deputy Susanne Birrer will take over the management of the publishing house and thus the day-to-day business and project management with immediate effect.

Birrer's new responsibilities include the publishing houses Rüegger, Südostschweiz Buchverlag and Terra Grischuna Buchverlag. Susanne Birrer has been working for the book publishers in Zurich since July 2006, initially as assistant to Myriam Engler, later as her deputy and as project coordinator. AZ Medien: Sales shrank by 30 million francs in 2009

AZ Medien AG suffered a revenue decline of 30 million Swiss francs in the past fiscal year. The media company announced this in a letter to its shareholders. The decline was primarily driven by the advertising market.

Business with job advertisements alone has slumped by 15 million francs, said Peter Wanner, publisher of AZ Medien, in a report by the Aargau/Solothurn Regional Journal of Swiss Radio DRS on Monday. The reason for this was the economic crisis. The cost-cutting measures in the past financial year had not been able to cushion the massive slump. AZ Medien will therefore be in the red. Wanner did not disclose how high the loss will be. AZ Medien AG will publish its financial results at the annual general meeting on May 28, 2009.

McCann Erickson for Neu.ch: Heart palpitations on the first date

McCann Erickson has created a TV campaign for Neu.ch, a dating site owned by the dating company Meetic. Three commercials show singles on their first dates. The spots are designed to convey, in a charming way, what the dating site promises its users: butterflies in the stomach.

Each of the three stories begins with the many questions and the uncertain feeling of a young woman before a first date. As the stories progress, it becomes clear that the excitement of the first encounter sometimes makes situations seem different than they actually are. And the stories show that despite all the misunderstandings, a first date can turn into something more. The commercials are now available in 30 and 20-second versions.

China: Self-censorship at the Wall Street Journal

The Chinese online edition of the Wall Street Journal looks almost exactly like a translated version of the English website. But there is one key difference: commentary and news critical of China are largely absent.

In order not to upset Beijing, the Wall Street Journal censors itself. Comments critical of the regime that were published on the newspaper's English website are nowhere to be found on the Chinese site. "Sometimes, for example on the founding day of the People's Republic of China on October 1, the Chinese online edition of the Wall Street Journal even comes across as well-behaved and statist, as if it were published by the Communist Party itself," according to an article in the Tagesanzeiger on Friday. On the occasion of the holiday, photos of marching soldiers and Chinese flags could be seen, but no critical comments on the pompous military parade. Even some Chinese-owned newspapers, and in particular the online edition of the Financial Times, were more courageous, the article continued.
The Murdoch employees in Asia did not want to comment. However, when Rupert Murdoch expressed an interest in buying the Wall Street Journal in 2007, the foreign correspondents based in China protested against the takeover in an open letter. In this letter, they wrote that Murdoch had sacrificed his journalistic integrity to satisfy his political and personal goals.

Budgets: SFLB, Matter & Gretener, Jenni Kommunikation and Future Connection

Four agencies report an increase in clients: SFLB came out on top in a competitive pitch for the Migros Club School. Matter & Gretener is starting the new year with the Depot-Interio boutiques. New to Jenni Kommunikation’s portfolio is the nearshore software developer Ciklum. Future Connection has acquired Richard Landheer as a new client.

Spillmann/Felser/Leo Burnett is now responsible for the communication presence of Migros Club School and will henceforth promote Switzerland's largest further education institution. The first works can be seen in all language regions from spring 2010.
Depot-Interio has decided to commission the opening campaign for its nine stores from the Zurich agency Matter & Gretener to be realized. The agency announced on Monday that the first communication measures will soon be seen.
The Danish software developer Ciklum has Jenni communication with the development and implementation of public relations work in Switzerland. The collaboration starts immediately. The main tasks include media relations and specialist communications consulting. Founded in 1996, the Zurich-based agency focuses on mandates in the ICT, start-up and consumer electronics sectors.
Future Connection won the budget for Richard Landheer's overall appearance and was commissioned to relaunch the website and print materials. The new website is intended to present the multifaceted company for building maintenance, cleaning and sewer maintenance more authentically and to address the various target groups more specifically. A long-term collaboration is also planned, in which further communication measures will be developed.

BCP 2010: Starting signal for competition

Europe's largest corporate communications competition is entering its eighth edition. From January 11 to February 21, 2010, companies and corporate publishing service providers can submit their publications for consideration in the BCP Best of Corporate Publishing 2010 competition.

The trophies are awarded in 29 categories and four times as a special prize. New this year are the renaming and expansion of some categories to give greater prominence to electronic corporate publishing media. The "Electronic Publishing" category has become "Digital Media" and "Best Crossmedia Solution" stands for "Media Integration.
Applicants can now submit their electronic publications by industry affiliation rather than by media type, as was previously the case. In addition, the best video productions in the "Best Use of Video" category will receive a BCP award. The category for employee media has also been redesigned. Applicants submit their employee newspapers and magazines by industry affiliation.

Special prices
The new special "Cover of the Year" award is presented by Corbis and honors the best cover photo of a corporate publishing medium. In addition, there is a special "Green Publishing" award for publications with a high sustainability factor. In addition to international communication concepts, publications with outstanding print finishing or print finishing are awarded the special "Print & Innovation" prize. The Federal Association of German Press Officers (BdP) will also be presenting the Awards for Corporate Reports in 2010. The deadline for applications is April 15, 2010.
The Corporate Communications Awards will be presented on June 30, 2010 in Hamburg - following the international BCP Congress. The competition is organized by Forum Corporate Publishing (FCP) together with media partners Acquisa, Horizont, W&V and Werbewoche. The application documents, conditions of participation and further information on the competition can be found at Bcp-award.com.

This includes several blogs by unknown female writers as well as the everyday experiences of presenter and online boutique owner Anna Maier. The new portal will be managed by six SI editors under the direction of Andrea Müller, the previous head of the SI website. Ringier spokesperson Stefan Hackh told the news agency SDA that there are no plans to hire additional staff for the time being. The online team will continue to work for the print product. The VIP lexicon contains pictures and information on the most important Swiss personalities from politics, business, society and sport. There is also a portal for cell phones, Schweizer-illustrierte.mobi, for use on the move.
