In a local school dispute, Beat Nützi "didn't use his dual function".
sufficiently transparent", the Swiss Press Council announced on Wednesday. The OT had opposed the Olten cantonal school in the dispute over the introduction of a progymnasium secondary level. This school wanted to teach all "Sek P" pupils in the south of the canton of Solothurn alone. The editor-in-chief wrote several commentaries on this topic last March. What he did not mention, however, was that he is the president of the Gäu district school association, which has also applied for a "Sek P" location.
Eleven teachers from the cantonal school in Olten therefore lodged a complaint against the OT with the Swiss Press Council. The teachers criticized the editor-in-chief for not taking a stand when reporting. He had also not made it clear that he was the president of the special-purpose association of the Gäu district school, which had also applied for a "Sek P" location. The Press Council states that the editor-in-chief would have been obliged to recuse himself due to the conflict of interest on the subject. At the very least, he should have explicitly referred to his function as president of the district school association in his two comments.
The Press Council partially upheld the teachers' complaint. In order to maintain their independence and credibility, journalists should maintain distance and avoid dual functions. Therefore, a strict separation between political office and journalistic activity should be sought - especially in media with a regional focus.
Monopoly position. It is not enough for political functions to be disclosed only within the editorial team.
