One Marketing draws attention to global forest destruction for Greenpeace

The agency One Marketing has launched a campaign for Greenpeace Switzerland aimed at raising public awareness of global deforestation.

According to a press release from the agency, the realization completely dispenses with the sad eyes of displaced orangutan babies or scenes of hopeless resistance by the local population against the ruthless bulldozers. Rather, the idea is a bridge to our latitudes. "It is important for people here to be able to grasp the enormity of the destruction," says Ruth Wagner, Managing Director of One Marketing. It is thanks to the 3D and sound designers at Elefant Studios and director Alexander Meier that the factually conceived awareness-raising campaign has achieved this dynamism, impact and emotionality in its implementation.
Accompanying the Spot advertisements and direct marketing measures are planned for Greenpeace membership renewal. The campaign will be rolled out throughout Switzerland with immediate effect.

New Lgk develops another campaign for the Lung League

For the second time, the Neue Lgk agency has carried out an awareness campaign on sleep apnea for the Lung League.

The treatable disease, which manifests itself with breathing stops during sleep, is relatively widespread according to the press release, but those affected are rarely aware of it. Posters and banners therefore specifically call on people to take an online risk test. They show people who have fallen asleep on public transport, as the tendency to nod off frequently during the day is typical of sleep apnoea patients.
The photographs were taken by Dan Cermak. The campaign will be implemented in the form of posters, illuminated posters and banners. The campaign will be accompanied by targeted media work and a mailing to doctors. It will run until the end of January.

New motif of the "Smart Heads Campaign" by Scholz & Friends Berlin

The Scholz & Friends Berlin agency has created a new ad for the *Faz*. It shows Marianne Birthler, the Federal Commissioner for Stasi Records, standing behind a shredded copy of the *Faz*.

Some put them through the shredder or tore them up by hand, others painstakingly put them back together again - today the Stasi documents are indispensable testimonies to the GDR dictatorship. The Federal Commissioner for the Records of the State Security Service of the former GDR, Marianne Birthler, had herself photographed behind a shredded and reassembled Faz for the Frankfurter Allgemeine Zeitung's "Clever Minds" campaign. The motif by Scholz & Friends can be seen from January 14, 2010 in F.A.Z. and Fas as well as in other newspapers and magazines.
The reason for the current campaign motif is the occupation of the Stasi offices 20 years ago. "By taking this courageous step, the people saved large parts of the Stasi documents from destruction. These files are important evidence of the injustice that was done to many people in the GDR. It is important that this aspect of GDR history is not forgotten," said Marianne Birthler on the sidelines of the photo shoot. Together with her colleagues, the guardian of the Stasi files has been fighting against oblivion for around ten years. Legible documents have been created again from countless sacks full of scraps of paper, in some cases in lengthy puzzle work. Over 1.7 million people have already applied for access to the files. "That means 1.7 million people have at some point said no to forgetting and to silence," says Birthler.

Google threatens to pull out of China

Now that Google has announced that it no longer intends to comply with Chinese censorship, other international corporations may follow suit. The search engine giant would even be willing to withdraw completely from China if the authorities refuse to accept an end to censorship on Google.cn.

As the Chinese censorship policy has so far also been supported by various other Western companies such as Microsoft and Yahoo, the question now arises as to whether they will also make a similar U-turn. "As a matter of principle, we do not comment on steps taken by competitors," says Microsoft spokesperson Thomas Lutz when asked by Pressetext. Furthermore, the company currently has nothing to announce regarding China and censorship measures. "However, we have already commented on the topic in general and are trying to strike a kind of balance in China between the rights and privacy of individuals and the fact that China is a free, independent country with its own laws," says Lutz.
Yahoo is also unwilling to comment on the specific steps taken by Google. However, the company is committed to protecting human rights, privacy and security, it told Pressetext. "We condemn any attempts to infiltrate corporate networks and thereby obtain user information," Yahoo said in its statement. The company agrees with Google that such attacks are extremely worrying. "We firmly believe that breaches of user privacy are something that all Internet pioneers must stand up against."
Larger market shares for competitors
If Google were indeed to completely abandon China, this would in any case offer competitors such as Microsoft and Yahoo the opportunity to gain large shares of a huge market - provided they maintain their censorship in accordance with the wishes of the authorities. At the same time, however, such behavior would also damage the image of companies outside China and possibly have a negative impact on market shares elsewhere.
Google's announcement was apparently triggered by massive hacker attacks from China as well as the theft of program information and the increasing restrictions on freedom of expression in the country. As the Wall Street Journal reports, some of the source codes were stolen in the hacker attacks, which could potentially be used to access other data.

American magazines lose around a quarter of their advertising pages

In 2009, American magazines lost an average of about a quarter of their advertising revenue. This was reported by the Publishers Information Bureau, according to Horizont.net.

The situation is even worse than during the last crisis in 2001, when the year-on-year decline amounted to 17.2 percent. While magazines recorded a total of 170,000 advertising pages in 2009, this figure was 238,000 in 2001. There were only a few winners this year, as Horizont.net writes. Those that were able to keep their advertising pages stable or increase them tended to be general interest magazines. Magazines that focused on the economic crisis in terms of content tended to lose out. Meredith, for example, only lost around 450 advertising pages in total. Some of its publications such as Better Homes and Gardens, Family Circle and Ladies' Home Journals even reported increases. Condé Nast was one of the biggest losers with a loss of 11,500 advertising pages. Time, with its Fortune and Money titles, lost 4,500 pages.

Deadline for Swiss Effie 2010 extended

More time to submit entries for the Swiss Effie 2010: The deadline has been extended to Friday, January 29, 2010.

According to the press release, a further extension is not possible. The finalists will be announced on March 2, 2010, and the Swiss Effie Award ceremony 2010 will take place on April 27 at the studios of Swiss Television in Zurich.

Last but not least: black, white, red - or would you prefer skin-colored?

It won't have escaped the attention of observant Facebook users: Women who are otherwise quite capable of writing nuanced status updates posted messages like «black as night,» «sky blue,» or «red with lace.».

It is easy to see that this must be the current bra color of the lady in question. A chain email had asked Facebook users to publish these. It is still unclear where the original chain message came from. However, rumor has it that the purpose of the campaign was to raise awareness of breast cancer. Which not everyone agrees with. The term "slacktivism" is already doing the rounds online in this context. Not familiar with "slacktivism"? It's a mixture of slacktivism and activism - convenient symbolic gestures at the click of a mouse that have no real impact on political or social developments. And of course there are also free riders in this campaign: for example, they try to persuade women to upload photos of themselves in their underwear for the good cause. Nice try. However, the campaign is unlikely to harm anyone. And even if it may not be of any use to anyone: It's always interesting to get a little insight into the general bra situation - who would have thought, for example, that "skin-colored" is trendy again?
