Wolfram Weimer to join Focus in March

Wolfram Weimer, the editor-in-chief-designate of Focus alongside Uli Baur, will take office as early as March. As recently as December, Ringier Publishing had announced that Weimer, who had left Cicero at the end of December, was still under contract until May 31.

Outgoing Focus editor-in-chief Helmut Markwort believes that the editorial team will work well with his successor, former Cicero editor-in-chief Wolfram Weimer. The editorial team will support Weimer "with positive expectations", said Markwort on Thursday evening at the "Journalist of the Year" awards ceremony in Berlin, where he was honored for his life's work.
According to the news agency DDP, Weimer will join Focus as early as March and will initially be introduced by Markwort and co-head Uli Baur before succeeding Markwort in September as planned. Helmut Markwort confirmed this to Kress.de on Thursday evening.
In December, the Ringier publishing house announced that Weimer, who had left Cicero at the end of December, was still bound until May 31, meaning that he would not be able to start at Focus before June 2010. On February 1, Zeit publisher Michael Naumann will become the new editor-in-chief of Cicero.

New content partnership between AP and Yahoo soon?

The Associated Press (AP) and Yahoo are close to finalizing a content partnership. According to sources familiar with the matter, the deal calls for both stricter restrictions and higher prices for AP articles on Yahoo's news sites.

According to a report in the Wall Street Journal, the new contract could be signed and sealed in just a few weeks. Just a few days ago, it was announced that Google News would no longer show any new AP content, as the two sides had apparently been unable to agree on a new partnership. In a statement, Google said that AP would continue to allow content to be shown on Google pages, but that no new content was currently being listed.
AP did not comment on the ongoing negotiations when asked by Pressetext. Even in the USA, where the talks are ongoing, neither Yahoo nor AP have made any public statements to date. However, Yahoo has stated that "AP is one of our most important content partners and Yahoo values the long-standing relationship and expects it to continue in the coming years".

China is not prepared to bow to Google

After Google announced yesterday that it would no longer allow its services in China to be censored, the Chinese government responded today.

According to Netzwoche.ch, a spokesperson announced that China had no plans to change its policy for Google. Rather, it is the task of the state to control the formation of opinion on the internet, where things such as pornography, hacker attacks and online fraud pose major threats to society.
It is not surprising that China is not prepared to bow down to Google. Especially as Google has never really got off the ground in China and a withdrawal by the company is unlikely to have much impact on the Internet in the Middle Kingdom. In this respect, it is not surprising that many observers see Google's change of direction as more of a publicity stunt than a commitment to its own slogan "Don't be evil", which has suffered in recent times. Nevertheless, the action is unlikely to be without consequences. After all, it is not just Google that has been criticized for years for its cooperation with the Chinese government. The same applies to Cisco, Microsoft and Yahoo. Google's change of direction is likely to increase the pressure on these companies.
